Master 3058 South Alabama | Subject: RE: Slornow's and Wannabefaster's Summer Mentor Group - CLOSED Originally posted by Chunga Hello all. I had a great time at my race yesterday! There were about 120 racers, great energy and nice course. It is fun to bike in new places. My run times were faster than before, 12plus minute miles which is slow but not for me. I was sort of surprised b/c I was tired by then. The bike route was very hilly, 20 miles. I felt really prepared for the hills due to my group ride training and it went good for me. Al,most 16mph which I will take! I heard lots of comments about how hard the bike was so I was pleased with how it went. The swim, oh the swim...... This was my first open water swim, no practice. It wasn't a panic thing at all, I was fine being in the water. It just 'felt' all wrong. Technique was awful, I wasn't even keeping my fingers together. The sighting part was strange, I kept swimming off course. There was contact off and on throughout but I was passed by so many people it was mostly incidental stuff. Disappointing swim but lots of area for improvement! I got a flat and couldn't find the right tube late last night so missed my group ride today. Gym for me later! I hope everyone enjoys their Sunday. Mary Great job Mary! Open water swimming is a different animal. Takes time and practice to get comfortable with it. |

Master 3058 South Alabama | Subject: RE: Slornow's and Wannabefaster's Summer Mentor Group - CLOSED Workouts done for the day. Really did not want to swim after the long run. I hate swimming after biking or running...just feel like I don't have much energy. But I got an easy one done. The swim-I don't know whether to be pissed or proud. My son just finished his freshman year at college where he runs cross country and distance. He has been having some knee problems this Summer so he has been swimming for the last couple of weeks. He said he swam a 34 minute mile early in the week but I had my doubts. He went to the pool with me today and dang it he could be a really good swimmer with a few lessons and some consistent training. Today he swam a 30:32 mile which works out to 1:40-1:45/100. He had lessons when he was 6 or 7 but has never swam with a team or anything. Hmmm?? I know he would be a solid cyclist with his aerobic capacity. His most recent 5k run was 14:55. Heck, I may be able to build him into a triathlete when he gets out of college! Nap for me this afternoon and then chores around the house. |

Lots of competing factors including travel, trying to sell house, bla, bla, bla. Most importantly for me, however is that I am getting lots of enjoyment from what I'm doing and am seeinjg gains in both swim and bike. I have finally crossed the 20 mph average threshold for my long rides of 50 + miles. This has eluded me for quite some time. I remember my first year of Triathlons (2002) I averaged 14 mph on my long bike rides. Next month is going to be a real challenge as I am on nights at work, then have lots of 14 hour days coming up. Kids in college, need I say more? |

Member 2098 Simsbury, Connecticut | Subject: RE: Slornow's and Wannabefaster's Summer Mentor Group - CLOSED Suzy - sorry you didn't have a good race. The weather this year has been uncooperative (to say the least). You have to take the day as it comes and go with it. I always ride SUPER conservative in the rain. Take a day if you want - then shake it off and look forward! Mary - I think everyone needs to get that first awkward open water swim out of the way Now you know what to expect and will crush it next time. Happy July all! I'm over the top excited. I posted on my tri group wall looking for a sports specialist PT who can work with me to figure out why my run causes me pain. Well I found one and he's meeting me first thing this am. So here's to the ROAD TO FIXING MBC! I'll let you all know what he says but I already think I have some idea. Also I took every photo I have of me running and put them on a disc for him to look at. I don't see anything but maybe he will. Have a good day all. June: Swim: 4h 35m 50s - 9413.1 Yd Bike: 6h 14m 15s - 135.9 Mi Run: 4h 50m 30s - 28.6 Mi Yoga: 2:00 I have a lot more rest days than I'd like but those mid week tris just wipe me out the next day and I don't feel like doing anything. I am starting to do yoga (a 2 whole hours) the day after my Tuesday nights so we'll see if that helps. Edited by mtnbikerchk 2013-07-01 5:26 AM |

Extreme Veteran 692 England | Subject: RE: Slornow's and Wannabefaster's Summer Mentor Group - CLOSED June's totals: Swim: 8h 45m 05s - 24008.72 M Bike: 34h 16m 59s - 486.5 Mi Run: 17h 27m 41s - 100.05 Mi Core Training: 5h 22m With the exception of swimming, this is by far the biggest month of training I've ever had. My previous run max was 70 miles in a month, so I'm really pleased (and surprised) that I made it to 100. I reached full-on taperitis yesterday. Went out for an easy ride with my husband and his training partner. They're both recovering from injury/health issues and just getting back into their training, so they wanted to take it easy which was great for me. But when we started out I just felt really weak and tired, like I'm incredibly unfit. I had to work hard not to really stress about how I'm "losing my fitness" from not doing the longer sessions... And then it was REALLY windy (gusts), and I was getting blown around all over the place. I was getting really confident on the tri bike until a couple of weeks ago when I had a little skid going round a bend (didn't go down, just overcooked it) and it knocked my confidence in my ability to read bends. So with the slight loss of confidence and the wind I was getting really tense. Not helped of course by the fact that it was about this time last year before IM that I crashed. So that is in my head. So now I feel like I'm not fit enough and if it's windy I'm going to crash next week. PLEASE somebody tell me this is normal and I just have to get through it! |

Master 3058 South Alabama | Subject: RE: Slornow's and Wannabefaster's Summer Mentor Group - CLOSED Rachel-I always feel like crap during a longer taper. Flat, listless and undertrained. This happened headed into my last HIM and my coach responded with something along the lines of "i'd be worried if you felt good now." Your body is adjusting to the decreased workload and that takes time just like when you increase intensity. Sounds like your confidence on the bike was shaken. Look back at all the miles you have put in safely on the bike. You are an experienced rider and racer. I suspect this is all part of the second guessing we all do headed into an important race. You will do well. If conditions are less than perfect adjust your riding for the conditions as you have done numerous times before. Be confident and rely on your experience. I hate the days leading into an important race. My mind is consumed with "what ifs", watching the weather forecast and calculating potential splits. June looks like another great month of training....another reason to be confident heading into the race |

Master 3205 ann arbor, michigan | Subject: RE: Slornow's and Wannabefaster's Summer Mentor Group - CLOSED Rachel, Randy and I have the same coach and he said the exact same thing to me two weeks ago when I was bemoaning how crummy I felt in the days leading up to my HIM. Follow your plan. It will have you rested and fit for race day. Six days out from the race is not when it matters. It matters when you toe the line, and you will be ready. I echo Randy's comments about the bike. You have ridden hundreds of incident free miles. Don't let this one moment get in your head and sabotage your confidence. We all will eventually have an issue on the bike. I have had my share. You had yours last week and handled it like a champ--didn't even go down. You obviously have good bike skills because you held it together and kept the rubber side down. And yes, it is normal to perseverate (used that word for Randy) on everything in the week coming up to a race. I was dreaming about transitions in the days prior to mine. You are ready! |

I had a really long complicated dream last night about Outlaw! The only thing I can remember now is that there was a massive line in transition and it took me an hour and a half Thanks for the support guys! I just need to get through this week without going insane. It's not helped by the fact that I had booked my leave from work starting on Friday, and they completely ignored it and warned me for court that day. So I haven't managed to sort out how/when I'm travelling because I still don't actually know if I have to work on Friday! I'm hoping to get a final answer tonight/tomorrow and then I can make proper plans (at the moment I just have two options at the ready). |

Expert 866 | Subject: RE: Slornow's and Wannabefaster's Summer Mentor Group - CLOSED Did a reverse brick today, 9 mile run followed by a 20 mile bike. Just felt like mixing things up a bit. My legs were pretty sore on the bike but I still managed a decent pace. I'm back on the night shift (day 2 of 7) and getting in my training is always a challenge with my sleep schedule turned upside down. I felt like a zombie during my run but still managed to pull it off, nonstop with the heat at 86 degrees. I am unable to get in an exercise after my shift as all I want to do is go home and sleep. I admire people that can do that. My fear is that I would get my adrenaline going and then be unable to get an adequate sleep afterward. Jason - good to see you made the 100 mile mark to keep your running streak going. I was checking your logs but had full confidence you would get it done. By the way, I love my Shiv!! I am faster on it but also much more comfortable - double bonus!!. I have not tried the hydration system out. I am very impressed with how solid the ride feels. Well, I'm off to the ER to see an unending stream of patients. Doesn't anyone sleep at night anymore?? |

Running at sea level sure is easier than 4700'. As far as the weight loss goes I'm down 24 pounds this year and 52 from last January. I was looking at my photos from MT and wondering again if I could get a little more aerodynamic on the bike. I don't want to mess up a fit that is working but I am sitting pretty upright on the bike. |
