I've had chronic sleep-related issues since 1988 -- insomnia, sleep apnea. and restless legs syndrome. For many years, I hooked up to a CPAP machine at night. In 2010, I had surgery to open up the passages in my throat and nose. As a result,  I was able to finally ditch the CAP machine. But the restless legs and insomnia have persisted. I take handful of medication at night to stop my legs from twitching. Sometimes the medication works and sometimes it doesn't. I started some acupuncture treatments a couple of weeks ago, so I'm hoping that will help. For me, sleeping is sometimes a more difficult of endeavor than triathlon...

Glad to hear the weather is finally starting to warm up for you guys!

There is a pair of Shimano tri shoes I was looking at, but they don't have my size.

Performance bikes has a 10% off sale on shoes as well right now, so I'd really like to find a decent pair before it ends tonight. I'll keep looking after I go get a haircut in a minute.

Bryan, I would second the Tri shoes over specific road shoes. I just got a pair of Louis Garneau x-speed shoes (the lower end of their Tri shoe line-up). They are serving me well. I got them on Amazon becuase it was such a great deal (I think they still have them for around $80 or so) but I also have the experiance of coming from Europe and knowing my size fairly well. I also went to a bike shop and was going to spend $20 more to get some at the shop so I could try them on, but they didn't have my size in the lower end shoe... The guy tempted me to get the carbon shoes... But they were twice what I paid from these on Amazon... So I'm happy.

Got in a long ride today... 30 miles It felt really good. I wish there were an area close to me where there aren't so many hills, but I guess it's ok b/c my A race is at the beach and takes me over a bridge and back so that's a fairly large hill I have to climb twice. It's deffinately where most of my focus is going to be on my training rides... There's this one road that I'll ride out and back for my shorter rides that is essentially just 14 miles of hill repeats... Sometimes I wonder how I got myself into this... But it is oh so much fun

Apparently I have REALLY big feet for the sport with a size 11; I'm not finding anything in that size for a price that won't burn a hole in my wallet...

That stinks, I have a pair of 13's I would have thrown your way for free. I just got a new pair at xmas so these ones are just sitting around collecting dust... along with the other pair that I picked up since they were a good deal.

I've had enough with the winter this year. Whatever "dusting" that was last night turned out to be a good 4-6" and there was a sweet ice coating on top to boot. Even better was waking up to the house at 55F which meant over night the heat went out. Couple hours later between snowblowing and going through the boiler we had a clear driveway and heat but I missed my swim in the morning. I did get a slushy 3 mile run in later in the day just because it was so nice out. Nice being a relative term of course.

While I have my Oly and HIM races picked out for this year, I'm getting bombarded with emails regarding sprints that I did last year that are coming up in 2014. I'm going to pick 2-3 of those races and treat them as training days and to practice certain race day things but I don't think I'll be taking much time off before or after those days so it doesn't mess with my main training too much.

Other places to check online include Bike Nashbar, Sierra Trading Post, Biketiresdirect, Trisports, The Tri Shop.....just a few off the top of my heads. Good thing about a size 11 is you may be able to find some good clearance deals. I really like the simplicity of a triathlon cycling shoe. Typically one strap to pull across to secure. Happy hunting.

Weather is looking good here for the upcoming week. Mid to upper 70s.

Quite true indeed. I was hoping to get it on PB since I'd have about $43 + 10% worth of savings coming my way, but it doesn't appear that's happening today.

I could pick up a pair of regular cycling shoes in addition to the tri shoes so they don't burn out as quickly and still get some savings out of it. Am I thinking crazy or is the dual combination commonplace among triathletes?

Bryan-your shoes should last a long time. Much longer than running shoes. Since I started about 5 years ago I've only worn out 2 pair of cycling shoes. Typically because the upper starts to separate from the sole. A decent pair of road or tri cycling shoes will last you several years. Internet pricing is great but it may be worth a little extra $$ to get the shoes from the LBS to make sure the fit is right.

Point taken. Might cost a bunch upfront, but once I have the info and brand I need, I'll have intimate knowledge of what size I am and what does/doesn't work. I can go online after that, replace as needed, and save a boatload of money in the future.

Not sure if my LBS in Carrollton sells tri-shoes (I don't think PB here in Buford does), so that will need an inquiry on Tuesday when they open.

I have a beloved nasty pair of LG Tri shoes from 08? The cleats have been replaced so many times the holes are stripped. Last time we replaced the cleats hubby had to use liquid nail to keep the screws in. I finally broke down and replaced the shoes this year. My fitter will barely handle these shoes as they've been through 3 IM's.  My fitter tried to throw the shoes away the last time I took them to his store. Luckily, I think we've finally gotten the new shoe cleat placement to match the nasty shoes.. Some people put their tri/cycling shoes in the dishwasher to disinfect them after IM. Supposedly it works without tearing up the shoes.

It really is worth spending the time to get the right pair of shoes for your feet. Depending on the distances and locations that you choose to race your feet may get hot and swell. I've always worn Sidi shoes on my roadie. Which is why I bought the Sidi Tri shoes last year. The strap rubs the top of my foot in a weird place when I'm in the aero position.

IMO- you want your contact points to be very comfortable on the bike: shoes, saddle, aero bars and fit of course. More often than not you will be wearing the tri shoes without socks. You will want to try the shoes on with and without socks.

I would also suggest going over to Slowtwitch classified to see if anyone has shoes in your size for sale over there. There are often great deals from people that have received shoes or gear from sponsors that are new or gently used.

Good Morning!

126 this morning. Some of the weight loss may be carried over from my run yesterday.

Hope everyone has a great week!

Nice! I'm still at 161. The bag of Hershey's chocolate I ate over the weekend apparently didn't help.

Good morning all-

For anyone wondering, of course I went to the beer festival on Saturday. I have been pretty decent about getting myself moving and going on this base building over the last 6 weeks or so (could be better about the swimming), but I was just so mad about not finishing that workout...made me whiney! Beer was good although it was more, large style "microbrews" (think Founders, Bells, Short's, etc...) than I thought it was going to be and less of what I would truly call craft beer. Still had some decent beers and one really excellent barrel aged sour beer! Yum!!

Swimming yesterday was, well, still not good. I know I have to force myself to get to the pool at least 3, if not 4 times, per week and be swimming more, but I just hate it right now. I'll get past it and I'm sure I'll start getting better at some point, it just is not coming very easy at all. I have read a lot of stuff from people who were in similar spots to me when they started and a couple years later are actually doing quite nicely in the swimming. I just hate waiting a couple years for anything!!

Weight this morning was 180.5, down a few from last week even with a beer filled Saturday so I'll take it.

Have a great Day!

Chris

well that blows

In other news, bugger, I gained 2lbs. OH well, I shouldn't be surprised with all the crap I've been eating and the salt over the last two days. Oh well, no matter. With all the running coming up in my HM training plan I'm sure I'll drop it soon enough. Currently 131

Back to work today. BOOOOOO

Saw the Lego movie last night. Very cute. I love the 80s space guy. I had a bunch of those sets too!!

ok all, have a good day.

oh ps - Gregg finished the FT Lauderdale Marathon yesterday and is flying back to NH today. I'll let him tell you about it!

Big swim done at lunch. Strength work then an ART appointment to stay on top of my calf issue later. Right now I need a nap....or some caffeine!

This week is a recovery week for me... Which also means it is a test week

I did a broken kilometer in the pool this morning. I could already tell that I was improving becuase 5 weeks ago I couldn't even finish it. I had to stop a 500 and I took longer breaks between the sets of 100. Last time my pace was 2:16/ 100yds... This time it was 2:08! So 8 seconds and actually doing the whole thing is a big jump! I'm excited to see what my improvement is in the other two sports!

On a nutritional note, I am currently sitting in my kitchen waiting for my homemade energy bars to come out of the oven I was amazed at how much they cost in the store so instead I went online and found a recipe. The dough tasted great, so I'll let everyone know how the finished product is and then share the recipe for those that care I'm kinda excited

Woo-Hoo!!  Nice job with the scale!

Nathan--great job on the swim improvement.  It took me something north of forever to make that kind of progress so quickly.

I am whipped after two really big volume weeks.  Had one more hard day today and couldn't hit much of anything on the bike.  I did manage to squeak out my brick run.  It's technically a recovery week for me with my indoor tri on Sunday to prepare for.  Should be an interesting race.  Lots of college kids from around the Midwest are coming in so they can qualify for Collegiate Nationals so it should be fun to watch them.  I'm in the last wave so have plenty of time to do it!

Got another 3 mile run in today. Progress. I like progress. Some mild calf pain, but that's to be expected. It's the area where the old hematoma is. Here's hoping we can get it broken up so it stops bothering me.

Stopped at the bike shop afterwards and ordered my new tri shoes. I've been looking at the Bontrager Hilo RXL for the past 6 months...bit the bullet today. Had to order them as I'm between the two sizes they had in stock (41.5 vs. 41 or 42). Will drop by later this week, get some new cleats for them and pony up for some rides.

Going to try to get some 5 a.m. swims this week. We'll see how that goes. With my husband out of town, it's hard leaving the house at 4:30 and expecting the dogs to be okay until I get home at 3:30, particularly my old Cushing's dog. His excessive water intake (even properly medicated) makes it pretty rough for him if he has to hold it that long. He's good up to 9 hours, though.

Having so much trouble with my new trainer. It took 15 minutes to install the quick release bar it came with (where were the instructions Fuji?) and when I try attaching the bike to the the trainer per the instructions, I've literally got it hanging by the thread because there's too much room to lock it up. The instructions on both ends are useless and/or nonexistent and I have no clue how to fix the problem.

Chris- My swim times are still less than lovely. I still really enjoy swimming even with my times. We don't have a good masters group in our area but it might be something for you to look into. A lot of people find swimming more enjoyable with a group.  There is a guy (Bob)  at my pool  that also swim basically every morning.  We always check in at the Rec at the same time. This cartoon always reminds me of us. Can you guess which one I am?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p_u3YRZb74w

Randee- how was work today?

Nathan- Congrats on the swim breakthrough. How did the energy bars turn out? You'll have to post your recipe for the rest of us.

Suzy- An Indoor Tri sounds interesting. How does the race work?

Nancy- great job with the progress on your run. Your poor dog. I always hate leaving mine for a long time when my husband is out of town.

Bryan- Did you ever get your trainer set up?

The next two days are going to be busy at work and after school. I had to switch a few workouts around to accommodate a few last minute changes. Things are still coming along nicely with my workouts.

The race is 750m pool swim, 20K CT ride of a Collegiate course and then a 5K outdoor run.  Twelve people to a heat which is the number of CTs available at a time.   I think there are  15 heats. You do the pool swim, then head directly to the bikes, etc.   Like I said, I am in the last group based on swim times and getting all college kids through the race first.  It's USAT course certified which allows the kids to then compete in Collegiate Nationals in April.  Any incoming Freshman who wants to compete has to complete a certified tri beforehand and this works for that.    I started out doing it completely for fun.  Ironically, it will allow qualification for Nationals if you win your AG.    It's been nice to have something to focus on to keep things interesting during the crappy WI weather!  So far, I am really liking short distance training.  It's been a long time since I've done it.

Good luck with the schedule!!!

Unfortunately, no. I'm confounded at the moment unfortunately; the picture below is the reason. For some reason, there is not enough length to secure the trainer to the rear wheel quick release. I don't know if I did it wrong, if there's a defect, or what.

Anyone have any ideas?

It's latched in now. The height of the bike on the trainer is going to make things REALLY interesting as far as getting on it tomorrow (I don't exactly have much in the way of hip flexibility...something I haven't figured out how to improve).

I may have to do some cleaning before then though; there's a bit of grinding going on along the chain near the front gear and I'm wondering if too much of the grease got wiped off while I was trying to replace the rear spoke.

The start of the race I had the jitters. I was watching the other age groups start as they seeded the swim with over 1000 participants.
