Okay crew, I'm off to Lubbock today for my first HIM! It's about a 5hr drive, though probably longer due to pit stops I will have to take due to good hydration!   I will have internet there so I'll be on and off, but thanks, as always for your support!! I am so encouraged by y'all, and I'm very excited to go, as I've been saying "wrestle this Buffalo." The weather is daily getting BETTER in Lubbock, of course, anything can change in the day, but there should be storms the next couple of days, a chance of some rain on Sunday, mild winds and a HIGH OF 81 DEGREES is currently predicted.  For those unfamiliar with West Texas, if it is in the 80's it is truly a miracle.  I honestly prayed for good weather and cooler temps, and God just may bless us with all of the above! So here I go, off to become a Half-Ironman!

Rainy and windy.

Swim rocked, bike was fun but rain and wind made it tough, especially with the hills, run royally kicked my rear!

Goal = sub-6, that happened, so I'm happy and learned LOTS LOTS LOTS for Longhorn...3 months to make it happen!

Thanks all for your support, and Pam, double thanks for all the tips you gave me!!

Thank y'all--you guys rock.  Jeni, wow, I saw those charts of those mountains...the "hills" at Buffalo Springs would probably look like speed bumps to you...wow woman, you impress me!

Race report is up: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=121601&posts=1&start=1

How is your back Brit??

I didn't race this weekend but went and watched my club mates.  It was a criterion with a very technical course where people crash each year.... sure enough there was a crash on the first turn.. check out the blog. no one was really hurt fortunately.  Then a club mate of mine sprinted so hard to the finish she forgot to brake after the line and crashed in corner.  She had a huge smile on her face afterwards even though she ended up just barely missing out on 3rd.   I joked that she wanted the race to start and finish with a bang.

anyone else doing the TdF challenge?

Jeni- glad you weren't caught in that wreck! I so hope to avoid those, I'm a fan of the tri no-drafting rule!

My back is good--the only time I had the bad pain was about that first 3 miles of the run...once Excedrin kicked in, no more pain at all.  In fact, I only have some minimal soreness, if any in my quads...and my traps are still slightly sore from tensing in the wind I think.  My toes are nasty, but oh well, there isn't too much more I think I can do about it.

I'm not doing the TdF as, with the vacation, and embarking on the second HIM training this month, I wasn't sure what I'd be doing. I think I'm combining HIM and Marathon training (to finish comfortably, not BQ )...I need the long distance workouts as that's what makes me faster, and the endurance or lack thereof fatigue is what got me the other day.  The inagural San Antonio Rock and Roll Marathon is 16 Nov--about 5-6 weeks after Longhorn.  I'll build up fully for Longhorn, be able to take a week to recover, knock out some long runs, and then have fun at San Antonio.  So, we'll see.  I have an Olympic Tri up near Dallas on the 13th, so that'll be the next fun--it'll also be a big BT fest.  In fact, I'm staying at a BT'ers house.

woowhoo I got the TT bike back today!!  Man am I set up in an aggressive position. My bars are way lower than my seat. I like it, but it is going take some getting used to.  Right now I can only stay in aero for a few minutes without tensing things that shouldn't be tense.  my LBS said it would take some work to get used to it and get the most out of it.  But I feel like i am putting out 10-20 more watts for the same effort on my road bike which is awesome.  so the bike is definitely faster. But my biggest issue is i need to find a different saddle that will be comfortable for me to be that aggressive. Her attitude has toned down a bit with the different bars and she handles beautfiuly around corners and pretty good on teh straights when I am paying attention.

Yay!

I am not in an overly aggressive position on my TT bike. I am low, but not racer mean. But I've been training for long course, so I can't afford to be ultra aggressive. My fit guy told me an aggressive fit is only worth it if you use it. I can be ultra-aero, but it will do me no good if I can't hold that position for my race.

How long are your TT's?

I'm probably set up a lot like Pam, but I'm focusing on the long distance, and I know that if I went super aggressive I'd get way to sore. I can tell from this last tri that I definitely still have some getting to used to in the back.  In general, it took me a bit to get comfortable with the whole aero bar thing and not feel wobbly all over.  I'm sure you'll be fast as lightening though.

I think I'm going to order my wheels this week when I'm in Austin to take the GMAT (ugh).  I'm looking at a HED JET 60 for the front and a HED JET 90 for the back...

With bike set ups for long distance... comfort definatley comes first... its a balance but you have to be comfortable on the bike otherwise it will be a miserable race - plus you have to feel like your body is ready to run when its done...

Definatley go conservative to start out with.. as your body adapts you can always make alterations in the off season (best time to tweak bike position

yeah I am going to flip the stem when I get back home so it will raise the bars up a little higher. Then I will do some trainer rides to adjust a millimeter here and a millimeter there. I want to do a 40km TT on August 9.

This is the text from my 10,000th  post on BT....

In honour of my 10,000th post I thought it was most important to focus on my past 12 months on BT.

Why? Because despite joining BT in August 2005, (and discovering BT chat soon afterwards thanks to foolproof) that is were about 80% of the posts were posted. Exactly 12 months ago, in July 2007 I set up my very first BT challenge: the Tour De France challenge… it had around 75 competitors on 8 teams.

I originally set up the challenge for two reasons:

1) I have a serious Tour De France obsession (that gets worse every year)

2) I was finally off medication for my stomach condition and in a position for the first time in over a year to try and get fit again (after being sidelined while gearing up into training for my first Half mara)

This was the start of expanding my BT horizons and becoming a much more active member of the BT community. Since that first challenge I have been involved in the set up of 4 other challenges over 12 months (pretty good hit rate 4 in 12)– the most crazy of these has to be the October Halloween run challenge which had over 140 competitors and was complete chaos! (and likely to return this year)

(I probably should also claim responsibility for convincing a few BTers to run their own challenges by quietly suggesting they set up what they would like to participate in – none of them have stopped talking to me yet!)

I mention the challenges as a highlight because each time I have met a new group of interesting, entertaining, motivated, talented, supportive and most of all kind people in all stages of their life/fitness.

Its been a challenging year for me…between an amazing mentor group with athletes far more successful than myself, health problems, talk of cheesecake, injuries (a sprained ankle, calf strain, case of runners knee and plantar fascitis stands out in the last 12 months), taunting about my fishnets (if anyone wants to know they are often to be found in the bath), 1 case of serious sunburn (don’t swim 4.5ks to prove a point in an outdoor pool in the middle of the day), a new mountain bike, an emergency trip home to the family, and a sprinkling of fairy dust… Im still here!

12 months on Im trying the Tour De France Challenge thing again… this time we have over 110 sign ups across 13 teams… and (Im a little proud to say) several return participants from last year.

Where to for the next 12 months? Only time will tell… but I have one goal:  to face it with a positive attitude…

Cat

You rock Cat! That is absolutely awesome.  I was talking with someone on BT about how, in an odd sense, it's funny that we have all these "internet friends."  Yet, at the same time, this isn't some weird site, and these aren't some made up people looking to prey on someone. Instead, it's a slice of the world that is straining to do something the rest of the world thinks crazy.  The support, the encouragement, the opportunities to meet up at races, and the true friendship that evolves is truly incredible.  I think it's amazing, that just here we've got regular interaction from Austrailia, to South Carolina, to Texas, to Canada and the NW US to name a few.  And, if people didn't genuinely care, they wouldn't get on, and take the time to send an inspire, to track a fellow athlete online, to send an encouraging PM, or take the time to arrange a local "BT" event.  It is truly unique, and I for one, am so grateful.  Though, like at this last race, it is funny when, for example, a parent asks their daughter (who raced and is on BT) how they knew me...and the only answer is, umm, we're internet friends...haha!

Big congrats on the 10000 post--totally glad to be in the mentor group with all of y'all.  Whisper a little prayer for me, I'm off to go take the GMAT this morning...ugh

yeah its a pretty fun experience.

Everytime I call a BTer to set up a ride it starts out like this:

"hey is Chris there?"
"yeah"
 "It's Jeni"
"who?"
"Jeni"
"... who?"
and then I mumble "KrazyLegs"
and he instantly respond "oh!! hey!  How are you?"

Jeni, that's hilarious.  Most of the phone calls I've had with folks have typically been, hi, this is Brittany, you know from BT or vice versa if someone is calling me.  But, meeting in person it has always been hi, I'm Brittany...then you get that cockeyed look, but when you say, umm, TexasMPGal...it's the same thing, OHHHH.  Before some of the races when we've had pre-race BT dinners people here in TX typically have name tags with Screen Name and real name on it.  It's funny.

Name tags with screenames!?! That is hilarious!!!

So I had a nice ego boost today on what I would generally describe as a pretty crappy ride. When I go to prince rupert and eat what the people I work with eat it's pretty bad.  McDonald's twice in two days (it has been years since I've had a meal from there) lots of fried few and a complete lack of fruits and veggies.  I realized today... no wonder I feel like crap, I need a detox! So my ride felt slow and lethargic but this happened:

I am stuck in traffice behind a big line of cars stopped at a light.  A car inches up on me and I am kind of annoyed. But the driver rolls down the window and he says "WOW! YOU LOOK BUFF!! I might have to take up biking." I laugh and he asks me how long it takes to get your cardio up to par and tells me he's currently a couch potato. I laugh and tell him its easier than running and then as the light changes I am able to duck into traffic and sprint off on him. He floors it to catch up and pass me and regain his manlyhood. So that and beating 2 guys up the hills on the way home also boosted my self esteem.

WHAT'S THE BEST COMPLIMENT YOU'VE RECEIVED WHILE TRAINING?

I don't know that I've had as sweet of a compliment as that during training at all. I won't count cat calls or car honks either.   Probably the best one is simply that the guys at work, Army guys, and the guys in the unit I'll be taking command of in September, have and know the word that I run and workout.  That they ask me for advice now and ask me to pace them on the Army Physical Fitness Test (2 mile run) is, for me as a woman officer, a huge compliment and sign of respect.  That's probably mine.  Good question though!
