I did a 2000 yard swim this morning.  That's my new longest swim ever.  I did it as 2x1000, and felt pretty good through both 1000s.  It wasn't until the last 200 yards that I had to start the little motivational speech in my head.  "200 to go...okay, 175 to go, you can do this...150 left, that's easy........"

Wait, you are going to do a couple of hours of transition workouts on Saturday then run a half on Sunday?  Just thinking about it makes me want to take a nap!  You're beast (as my daughter would say).

I would love to go home today too, especially because it's supposed to rain tomorrow.  My husband has a couple of job interviews near our future home (Yea!) so he's leaving this afternoon and won't be back until Friday night.  I've got so much packing and cleaning to do, because my daughter's dance show is this weekend and we've got one set of grandparents here each day for the shows.  It would be nice to get out in the sunshine for an hour or two and just rest before the chaos starts, but that won't happen!  (Although I might be able to convince someone that my swim google eyes are a cold coming on.....)

Well it's part of my last big push to Mooseman.  I figure if I can get through the next 12 days, I can get through that.

I hope things go well for hubby at the interviews.  And speaking of a nap - the thought of packing does that for me.  I hate moving.

It is so nice outside right now.  I just got back from an easy run - a nice 30 min. of soaking up sunshine.  When I run at lunch, I have this great little 1/2 mile loop that goes in front the of the White House.  I love to see what crazy's are out and about protesting.  There was a new group today!  Chanting something about Sri Lanka - at least they picked a nice day for it.

I hope everyone is enjoying hump day and looking forward to the weekend.

Sigh.. another weekend to be jealous of all the races your doing  Although, I am volunteering at the beginners tri that our club puts on this weekend.  In a way, this volunteering stuff is tougher than the race.

Good luck!

Thanks but things will be quieting down pretty soon and I'm already freaking out about the after race letdown.  My marathon training won't start until August.  My husband volunteered at an even t earlier this year and had a great time.

Oh I almost forgot - I signed my son for his first little tri - more of a dualthon I suppose.  Run-trike-run - he's so excited.  He's been practicing his transitions on his scooter.  We need to get better training wheels for his bike.  I had to get him a USAT membership for it.  LOL  Luckily it was only $5.

I randomly had something come up about that USAT junior membership.  A lady had called me and asked about the $5 fee for her daughter to do our race this Saturday.  After explaining the race registration fee plus the $10 USAT one day license in a nice long email, I realized her daughter was 17 and only needed the $5 junior memberhship.  Then her daugter backed out of the race anyway.  Oh well.

As a moment of bragging, last year 183 people did this race.  This year, we have 270 pre-registered

Nice!  Sure you do!

Seems like your enjoying the race atmosphere.  Now just wait until running is the THIRD thing you do

I spent two hours cleaning out the garage before that race.  I told myself it was good practice for a tri.  Undecided

If you're available, my wife would LOVE for somebody a little more motivated than me to have a go at our garage

Believe me, if we weren't moving I wouldn't be cleaning it out!

The fun part is trying to convince my husband that, no, he really doesn't need to save that 3 foot piece of PVC pipe because he might need it someday.  Or the half sheet of plywood.  Or the baby stroller that no one fits in anymore...

I know what you mean.  I remember our husbands talking at lunch the other week about keeping every computer part they ever owned.  If we ever move and he insists on taking all of the garbage - he's the one packing and carrying it!

On the bright side - he is out of town til Friday! ;-)  Clean away!!!!

Can I cry on the groups shoulder for a moment?  I am totally bummed.  My swim lesson did not go very well today.  I got out in the water and it was a little breezy so the water was a little bumpy.  Anyways after 200m I was getting sea sick.  I had a few issues the last time in the lake but I thought it was the bobbing kayak.  So I tried another 200 then had to swim in.  I was so dizzy when I got out that I had to lay on thr ground for 15 min to get my head to stop spinning.

I have had motion sickness issues my whole life but not in the water except for snorkeling once but that's a long and not so pretty story.  I'm not sure what to do - try various methods to stop it or hope that it's a fluke thing on this lake.

This of course is not helping my psyche for Mooseman.  Cry

I also have motion sickness issues.  I've never experienced it swimming, but it keeps getting worse so it may happen yet.  I swear by the less drowsy Dramamine.  Whenever I get dragged (kicking and screaming) into NYC for meetings or seminars, I have to take some before the train ride, and I've never had a problem functioning afterwards.  Maybe you could try it before a lesson and see how it goes.

I remember that conversation very well!  All the way home I had to hear about how your husband gets to have a file server networked at home and I keep making him throw out the old computers so he can't do that.  I had to promise him that in the next house I would find a place just for his computers.

I don't have much in the way of advice but I'm sorry to hear about that.  The only thing I can think of (apart from motion sickness meds) is to get out in the lake as much as possible before the race to try to get used to it.  (Don't you hate how 99% of triathlon-related advice is "do it more"?)

Another thing I thought of is when you're just treading water, keep your eyes on the land rather than on the water or the kayak.  I think it helps to have a fixed object for your brain to get its bearings from.

It sounds like your swimming has improved a ton since this group started so I'm sure you can overcome this too!

Okay, stupid question time.  Embarassed

When you do an open water swim, how do you know how far you've gone?  We'll be at the lake for Memorial Day weekend and I was hoping to do my Monday swim in the lake.  (Provided the ice has all melted.)  My training plan is all based on minutes, so the distance really doesn't matter, but I'm sort of addicted to knowing how fast slow I went. Smile

Hmm.. if I remember correctly, ChrisM, who happens to be a very strong swimmer, had something like that happen to him at IMAZ.  Might want to shoot him a message and see what was up and if he had to do anything to deal with it.

I do it two ways:

1.  There are landmarks on the shore that I swim between then map it using the route function on this site.

2.  Guesstimate my pace and extrapolate it out.

I'm addicted to swim yardage, too  However, I've come to terms with the fact that there is hardly ever an accurately measured open water swim in a tri, so I can just guess my training yardage, too.  Most important thing is that you're out there.

I've had good luck w/ map my run or similiar yardage sites.  Just zoom in and pick landmarks for the points.

Thanks everyone for the advice.  The weird thing is I have been on the open water enough over the past year and no problems.  It just seems to be this lake which is good news/bad news.  I'm such a control freak so I hate not knowing why this lake is a problem.

I did some research and might start w/ ginger and ear plugs.  The easiest and most natural solutions for people and see if that takes care of it.  If not, I will move onto OTCs.

Hi everyone - it's late Sunday and I'm pretty tired.  I had a great couple of training days.  I swam in my new sleeveless wetsuit at the pool Fri. afternoon and swam a 1000m TT 3 1/2 min. faster than ever before.  Woo Hoo.  I just felt so good and fast in it.  I did several 2:00 100s.  I was beginning to wonder if that was ever possible for me.

Lots of swimming, biking and running the past three days capped off w/ a Half Mary this morning in the rain.  My slowest time of the year for a half but I felt good and feel good now.  So I think I will be plenty comfortable w/ the run at my HIM.  Now I just need to keep plugging away at the swim and bike.  I feel like I'm cramming for finals.  One more week of hard training before I start to taper.   I hope everyone had a good weekend.

Ok, helping plan a race is much harder than actually doing a race.  I think I'm just now recovered.  We were shooting for 250 people at the race on Saturday.  That would have been 70 more than last year.  We had to close registration at 400!!  Everybody keeps saying it was the most organized event they had done, but it felt like all hell had broken loose to me.

As for me, my hip pain won't stop, so I'm laying off of running for a while and bagging the tri I wanted to do on June 6th.  I'm working on getting my bank to sponsor a relay team that I can either swim or bike for, though.  Kinda frustrating, but there's a sprint on August 1st that I want to do well in, so it's the focus now.

How we all doin?

Congrats on a fabulous turnout and the rave reviews!!!!!

Sorry about the hip pain.  I hope it goes away soon.  Is it nerve related?  Last year, I had some muscle/nerve pain on the right side of my tush.  It would send shooting pains up and down my leg/back when I would stand up and walk around.  I went to a chiropracter and he found all of these knots in the muscle.  Once he got rid of them I've felt great ever since.

It's pretty isolated and really feels like joint/tendon/ligament pain.  It'll get better, I'll start running, and it'll flare up again.  I'm just not going to push it right now and see how it goes.

Ear plugs should help!

I'm back from Hawaii - great trip. Only got one real OWS in, really choppy but fun. Did some snorkeling and leisurely swimming as well. In the pool for the next two weeks solid to get ready for the 2000m OWS scheduled for May 31st. Been nursing what I think is some minor tendonitis in my ankle (probably from tight calves) stretching stretching stretching and laying off the running, but I think i'm going to start that up again run/walk/run style this week. Hope all is well with y'all with nursing injuries, training, and racing. Getting psyched for my next sprint in june.

ciao for now,
kiri

Hello group - I hope everyone had a nice Memorial Day.  Things have been quiet so I guess we have all been playing, working and/or training hard.

The family and I went to a mountain resort area for the weekend w/ my husband's company for a retreat of sorts.  We all had a great time and I got in a killer bike ride w/ my husband.  We went for about 3 hrs., 43 miles and 6200 ft. of total climbing.  It was really pretty and pretty hard all in the same breath.  So I hope that will be enough to cap my bike training for the HIM.  You know you are doing some serious climbing when you pass 2 scenic overlook spots after some hills.

BTW - still waiting for New Zealand, Hawaii and some other island (I think) pics!
