Bad news - Good news.

Bad news - My mini-sprint got cancelled for Sunday.  They called and told me they only had NINE people signed up......lol.  Can you believe that?  A "trainer" tri....for $20...and NINE people take (or would have) advantage of it?

I'm gonna get a big 'ol HTFU sticker for my truck.Frown

Good news - I'd made a pretty bad mistake with the timing.  My brother turns 50, tomorrow.  NOW, I can celebrate with him.  Other good news is....my swim coach is meeting me at 7AM, tomorrow.  He called me, today, and said he'd been thinking about me....and is anxious to get together.  Cool.

Good luck to everyone in your training/racing this weekend.

jeff

Sorry about that.  Take advantage of the free time to train now!

I talked to someone from wheelbuilder and she was VERY helpful.  She recommended either a kinlin x300 or a velovicty deep-v since both are cheap, near bombproof, and similar to what I ride now.  She also recommended 24 spoke count which I was totally clueless about.

The sunburn I got from my 50miler this morning is insane looking.  It just started to pinken and it is violently bright.  The tri top I wore doesn't have much cover on the shoulders.  And my legs are fried up to where my shorts were.

Yeah - I can see how that would be both bad & good.  To be super hyped up about something and then it not happen can be a complete letdown. It looks like though you will have lots to do Have a great weekend!

RogerWilco - 2010-05-14 9:37 AM Today, the life guard at the pool recorded my swimming again. I also posted this to Tri Talk, but I'm putting the link here for your comments. The effort is long distance effort.

Here is my swimming

Life guards' comments for improvement:
1) I should pull faster after the vertical forearm phase.
2) It seldom occurs now but I still cross my midline with my stroke. I should correct it.
3) I should work on high elbow recovery.

With 2 and 3 I have no issues. But I'm not sure if I should really pull faster. What would you say? I will try a "regular" 100 and "fast pulling" 100 next time and compare times.

I think it looks really good.  Elbows higher and really reach your stroke out in front of you and keep your hands from slapping the water - I know with my stroke my hands come farther down by body (more to my hip) before exiting the water (don't know if that is correct though!)  maybe I should get myself taped so I can see all the little bad habits I have acquired! oh my!

ok will try to hit all the questions here.

Swimming wise, work on reaching straight out in front of your shoulder vs crossing over as much.

With the bike intervals, pulling it up refers to a bit overvolume and slightly slower work but for longer time, pushing it refers to a bit less time working but much harder pace.

as for the cassette, you need to match teh speed up (ie 10 speed, or 9 speed chain, cassette, cranks).

the numbers refer to teh spacing. 12x25 gives you a larger range than say 11x21, but bigger jumps between gears.

Since I recently cashed in some old savings bonds and I just got my tax returns back, I officially ordered my PT wheel from wheelbuilder.

Kinlin PowerTap Package
Options:Rim type: XR-300 clincher
Rim color: White
Spoke count: 24
Spoke color: Black
Spoke type: Sapim Race
Nipples: Black Brass
Drivetrain type: Shimano/SRAM
PowerTap & Garmin GPS: Elite+ System
Garmin options: None
Ceramic upgrade: None
Aero Disc Covers in White
Options:Wheel type: Other, please specify
Other wheel, specify type: Kinlin XR-300
Other wheel, specify rim depth: 30mm
PowerTap hub: All Models 2006-present
Wheel size: 700c
Spoke count: 24
Extra hardware: None
Cassette removal kit: Shimano removal kit
I'm going to continue using my stock Felt front wheel.  I know that I ordered a white rear rim and my front is going to be black but I'm a fan of white.  The majority of my bike is white and I think it'll look cool.  I'm not too worried about my aero cover getting dirty in races either.  Everything can be cleaned.  Wheelbuilder says turnaround time is 2 weeks.  That gives me plenty of time to strategize on how I'll carry out my testing and training with it.

EDIT:  The folks at wheelbuilder are very helpful when it comes to recommendations.

My masters coach gave me a good visual for not crossing center.  He jumped in the pool and stood right in front of me.  He told me to put my head in the water (while still standing) and make as if I was stroking with my arms.  The idea was that when my hand enters the water...I should not touch him as he is standing in front of me.  When you extend and roll your body, your hand and arm will naturally move closer to center...but not so much that you will cross the center line.

So now when I actually swim...I pretend that there is an object about the size of a human waist right in front of me...and as my hand enters...I try to avoid hitting it.

Another thing you can do is if you swim in the middle of the lane...look down at the black line.  If that black line extended all the way up to the surface, your hands should not enter the water over the black line...it should always be to the outside of the black line.

Sweet Carl.

I may be joining you soon.  I actually picked up a Garmin Edge 500.  I needed a new computer for my bike anyway...but I got the edge for $200 (20% off).  I already have an ANT+ HRM, so I just needed the unit and the mount.

I was primarily looking at the DT swiss PT wheel, but the Kinlin looks sweet.  Same rim depth and 120 grams lighter.  I'm going to give them a call on Monday, and likely place an order based on their recommendation for spoke count, spoke tension, etc.

Ahhh...new toys...good times.

Thanks - I'll have to give this a try tomorrow.   I've been told my left hand has a tendency to move to the center especially when I take a breath (right side).

I've also been told to work on the high elbow recovery.   One thing I noticed you are doing (only because it is something I was doing):

watch your left hand - after you enter the water you sometimes arch your fingers up and your hand comes back up to the surface of the water.  Its like putting on the brakes.  Relax your hand/fingers.  Some single arm drilling might help you get the feel for that.

Yup...same here.  As I get tired...I start crossing over more.

I have the same issue of crossover on occasion myself.  I usually crossover with my left hand, which happens to be my strong side (south paw) but I am not sure if that has anything to do with the problem.

Another thing I am not good at is rotating my hips.  I don't act like a corkscrew very well.  I think the reason I do so well in the water is because of my upper body strength still remaining from power lifting days.

I should try to record my laps sometime.  If I do I will try to do it about midway through my workout so I am worn down and less focused on being recorded and paying a lot of mental attention to my stroke while being recorded.  I don't know about anyone else but I would have a tendency to focus hard on precision while being recorded and no one would get the real picture of what I look like when "no one is watching."

It looks like I am stuck on the trainer today due to the rain. Tomorrow looks awesome - possibly a long run?  No races this weekend.

Had to unwind a little last night.  Went to a friends house and had a couple beers and relaxed.  Played some cards...just to get my mind off tomorrow's race.

It's drizzling today...and forecast is for spots of light rain tomorrow.  Luckily, the race is in an area that rarely rains...so if it's raining on the course...it's got to be raining everywhere.  The good news is that it's the type of rain with zero wind...where the forecase earlier this week was for sunny with winds 15-20...gusts to 25.  So I think it might end up being perfect for racing...a little overcast...cooler...and probably no wind/little rain.  Knock on wood.

I got a couple softball games this morning...but won't play hard at all...then dropping off my bike at checkin and packet pickup/race briefing.  I should be in bed early.

I'll probably take the bike out for a short 20 minute spin soon...just to make sure everything's working before checkin.

That's a pretty daunting first tri.  800m swim and an 18 mile bike with hills?!?!?

My first two sprints had 11 mile FLAT bikes.  Kudos to you.
