Well done, Ken!

I am hoping you all can settle a disagreement I have with my training buddy.  At Master's swim, some people will start using flippers when the intervals are too hard (I'm in one of the slowest lanes, so sometimes we just can't make them, the coach only gives 2 options generally, and sometimes those options feel like "superman fast" and "too fast").

I think if the interval is too hard, it is better to just sit one out and take some extra rest.  Everyone else puts their flippers on.  What do you think?

Our group, and it has been a while since I swam with the whole group as my first trip back last week people did their own thing to prepare for the meet.  But our group is small so the faster swimmers get extra rest and us slower swimmers get little.  Sometimes I would sit one out just to catch my breath and start fresh.

Recently though I have started using the fins, but more as part of my shoulder rehab than to swim faster, although I guess they are suppose to make us better at kicking.  They take some of the load off my shoulder when it gets fatigued.

But to answer you question, I think it is best to do the set as written without the aid of the flippers.

Kath2163 - 2013-02-17 10:15 PM Hello All,I think that I am finally starting to find my motivation to train. I had some dental surgery almost two weeks ago which set me back a small bit but besides not being able to get in the pool, I was able to run some after a few days. Yesterday I did the final 10 mile race in the winter distance series here in CO. I was worried about not being able to finish so I decided to turn my timing chip in and just do what I could without the pressure of having to finish and have people wait for me,etc. It really did help me mentally and I actually cut seven minutes off my time from last month's 10 mile race on the same course. (Last month's race didn't go very well).I am seriously considering participating in a training camp for IMWI in July but I have a dilemma regarding my bike. I don't want to spend a lot of money getting my bike to and from WI for one ride on the course and I don't have the time or even the smallest desire to drive to WI. A friend suggested I rent a bike. I did some research and could rent a road bike. Has anyone done this(rent a bike for training or racing)? Kathleen

I would hope that you could find a bike to rent so you could do the camp!  I would think a weekend like that would be a great way to get ready for the race Kathleen!

Nice job on the race!!

jennifer65 - 2013-02-18 4:54 AM So Brian - was that your wife's carbon bike or someone elses ?- cause that could be awkward. I don't know if it was the falls yesterday or the swimming last night but my shoulders really ache today - so I'm putting in a rest day and rearranging my planned sessions for later in the week. Maybe I am really too old for all this. Mind you, saying that - once i was clipped in yesterday it definitely made me a little quicker I think Lovely bruises on legs today. Can't help on the swimming front - but surely its up to the coach to say if people should wear flippers or not? Jennifer

You are definitely not too old!! Just do YOUR best everyday and you will get better.

Heal up and get back at it!!

Jennifer. We came to a stop sign and she fell over. She fell into me and knocked me over into someone else. So it was hers/mine/and one others. Everyone was ok and luckily the only real damage was on her bike. So we had to get that fixed up. The other person is a friend and completely understood about learning the pedals. So we still kind of laugh about it! ????

Hello everyone, I'm back from the abyss!! So I had one week with my husband out of town combined with sick kiddos, (& only one workout) then last week, the first week of my 30-week training for IMWI, I got sick, so so sick. I've been so paranoid about getting the flu (for good reason). I've never been that sick for that long. I was so upset about my first official week being a complete & total bust I couldn't even look at my plan, couldn't post, couldn't do much of anything. Every day I'd think "tomorrow I've got to be better", then I'd wake up & I wouldn't be better. So so frustrating!!

I was FINALLY able to get out yesterday & run (it was sunny & almost 60F) a slow 4 miles. I'm still a bit stuffed up, but no fever & chest issues, so it's stuff I can work through.

So a quick question--any harm in making up my workouts from last week? I know a lot of people say forget it & move on, but I can't. I figure these first couple weeks are so low in volume/intensity, I can just add some time here & there. For example, on the plan today was 30min bike w/15min run brick. I did 60min bike w/15min run (30min bike make up from last week).

Looking forward to catching up on posts!

Jennifer- a couple of things that helped me when I was first learning on my clipless pedals.
-Try riding on grass (I did it around my yard) clipping in & out over & over
-Remember to build up a little speed with the one foot clipped in before you try & clip in the other foot
-You can adjust the tension/float (these may or may not be the right words) that will make clipping in/out easier. In essence, they are looser, I started out this way & then made the fit tighter.
-Don't get discouraged!! We ALL have fallen, it happens.

My cousin & his wife live in Madison & are very active in Tri's. I can ask them for recommendations for bike rentals in the area. Are you thinking of doing the WIBA training? I'm doing that one!

Great job on your 10 miler!!

Good Monday morning to all! It's my rest day today, and I have learned to look forward to these rest days! Week 4 of my 30 week training plan, so a slight decrease in hours planned for this week. That works out nicely because I have a half marathon scheduled for Sunday (Gasparilla in Tampa--if you ever have a chance to do it, it's a great race, and they offer 4 races throughout the weekend, with a special medal if you do all four--15K, 5K, half marathon and 8K).

As for the clipping in on the bike, I agree with whoever said you should get your speed up before clipping in the second foot (if you don't get it clipped in right away). I see even experienced cyclists make the mistake of slowing down, especially in an intersection, trying to get that second foot clipped in. I think it's better to get up some speed then coast for a moment to get that second foot where you need it, especially if you're in a group. Otherwise you are causing problems for anyone behind you and it becomes a safety issue. Bottom line is don't panic! My first time using them I was on a bike trail and we stopped to use the restroom--couldn't get that foot out in time and fell over in front of a stranger (who was a cyclist). He laughed loudly then apologized but said "Sorry, but that was really funny." My husband just shook his head, and I laughed, too. No harm done. :-)

Last week I had to bike inside on the roller trainer because of rain, so I was really happy to get outside yesterday. It was quite cold here (34 in the morning) so we waited until 3pm to ride, but it was still chilly and windy, so we bundled up. Of course I over-dressed and got hot quickly, but pulling down the arm warmers solved that. It reminded me of a cartoon I had seen, and I found it (gotta love Google)--hopefully the link below works. I like living in Florida for a reason! I don't mind running in the cold, but I really do not like biking in it!

Glad you are feeling better, tough being that sick for that long!  And frustrating too I bet!

You know the answer Ali!  Innocent I know it is frustrating, but there really is nothing to be gained by trying to make up a whole week out of 30.  Forget it and move on, you have plenty of work ahead of you to get you prepared for your race.

Good to have you back!

Gasparilla is supposed to be a great race from what I have heard.  Didn't there used to be a full marathon as well?  Have a great time and an even better race!  Looking forward to hearing how it goes for you.

That cartoon is so right on!  It is funny, 50 degrees here in September and we are bundled up and complaining, 50 degrees in March and we are out in tee shirts and shorts washing the cars!

I try to get up to speed before clipping in the second foot.  The key is making sure you remember what foot isn't clipped in if you have to put one down! Embarassed

Enjoy your recovery week!

Yes, that is the one!  WIBA.  I have heard great things about it and it sounds like it is really low key, do it at your own pace etc. It would be great if you would ask your cousin!  Thanks so much!

Back to the pool this morning, Monday is always swim day and the closest I get to a rest day.  Considering the race yesterday and the volume and intensity of the plan this morning my shoulders are definitely feeling the work, but in a good way!!

Short run at lunch time, 2 miles is all and then some strength training.

Good work folks!

Hard to catch up after being away from the computer all weekend. I try to spend as little time on line a possible and enjoy the free time with my two boys.

Last week was good for me. I am still not feeling 100%, but feel like I push my work outs. As I mentioned before, I am probably going to be the least trained individual on my Ironman race, but I am realistic about what I can do.
My goal continues to be the same at this point which is to build my long run to 12 miles and long bike to around 50 by May. (truly not worried about the bike) Ran 8 miles one day last week so I feel like I am well on my way. All me bike workouts have been indoors which I am beginning to enjoy and appreciate more and more.

Hope everyone has a good week of training.

Welcome back to training Ali and Kathleen!

I had a pretty solid training weekend but a slow start to this week.  Maybe I'll get on the trainer tonight.

The exciting part of the weekend is that I ordered a road bike!  It's a Cannondale Super6 with Ultegra components.  This will be my first new bike.  In fact, I've never owned a new car either, but I've got my priorities.... Can't wait for better weather to hit the road.

Another busy weekend! Coach wanted some big workouts from me so I think I logged about 7 1/2 hours of workouts. Besides that and regular house cleaning and cooking. Took the wife out to breakfast on Sunday, dinner on Friday night, went to Firespeed tactical to plan out a build on a new AR-15 (I know some of you might not agree with me on this, but I've been shooting pretty much since I could walk. grandpa was a sniper in WWII and an avid hunter and my dad and I shoot target/trap/and competitions). Then bought my wife a new car on Monday. Alas... The basement was pushed back once again! This week is pretty mellow with low volume and some testing. Curious how those tests will go cuz I'm really broken down. Probably be my worst ones yet. But it should start looking better from here.

Bill SWEET ride !!! Congrats!

Hope you all had a good weekend!

I am continuously amazed at how much work all of you get done! My friends and family think I get a lot of training in, but it pales in comparison to what many of you get done! So well done, Brian, even if you had to push back the basement project.

Thanks Becky! I have too many hobbies! TRi trumps everything though, well......except for my wife! Lol. Other things seem to take me forever to do. I've still got a couple RC airplanes in boxes waiting to get built. I've got a single speed project bike I gave to my dad to ride as is right now till I be time to convert it! I've got another mountain bike un built here and the basement! I finally got rid of all my motorcycles and racing stuff because I didn't have time to keep working on them. I actually hired a guy to build that AR-15 because I know I'll never get to it. I'm terrible at biting off more than I can chew so it doesn't feel like I get a lot done on the weekends.
