Well I am taking some time off the bike and run to let things heal up some. I really don't want to be out another 5 months so I plan on taking it slow since things are starting to ache a bit. I also have this burning sensation on the inside of my leg that seems to follow a vein. It started after a run last Friday so I am off the run until it's gone. I am icing it like a madman. My sprint isn't until 9/15 so I'm not worried about it with taking a week or two off. I also aren't trying to set any land speed records so I'll be fine. I am tossing around the idea of heading to the doctor in the next day or two to see if there is anything else I can do for this.

Cool- I only carry a CO2 on my road bike, but I'm always nervous I'll miss-fire it or something. I did try it out once 3 or 4 years ago, but have not since then. Good to hear it worked seamlessly. I get plenty of practice with a pump on my mtn bike.

Smart move! I'm sitting here with an icepack on as I type this. I'm icing like it's my job.

Happy to report that the ITB feels better today. I'm gonna take a page out of Alex's book and skip my bike ride. Instead, I'll brave the 65 degree temps and go for a swim.

60 minutes later....

Swim is done. Now where is the beer?

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and make an observation so please correct me if I'm wrong.

That being said I'm sure no doctor but...I think I may have found out one of my problems why injury has been finding me so often. In the pursuit of weight loss I lost track of an important step which is to eat. Up until about 2 weeks ago I was on a 1000 calorie deficit a day which was a 2 pound a week loss. That's all fine and dandy but I wasn't including my exercise in that. So I think I was eating just enough for my body to keep from shutting off and not enough to repair the damage I was doing. I'm looking at this as the same as air in a tire. Less air and you can still move but soon enough you will do damage to the tire from not having it full enough. I could be way off base here but this is just a guess on my part since I have no idea why this keeps happening and it's driving me mad. Long story short if I am eating just enough calories to survive there is none left to repair my injuries and rebuild the muscle I am tearing down daily during my workouts. Does this sound about right or am I trying to create ideas to justify my injuries? Either way now that I hit 170 I am switching to maintain weight until I get injury free and try to repair a bit. I will worry about that last 10 pounds in the off season when my training load is lighter.

I would love to hear any ideas on this.

I would totally agree that there is a likelihood your diet is impacting your body. When I was swimming in College we all had to meet with a nutritionist every other week (until we proved we didn't have eating issues.) I learned a lot. Especially if you cut out too much fat your body can't absorb fat soluble (sp?) vitamins which I think are A,D,E and K if I remember right. This all started when two girls got stress fractures. So there definitely is a correlation.

I'll see that Challenge. October 13, Spokane Half Marathon. That gives me a little under 2.5 months to get ready.

There's always going to be a give-and-take between working out and weight loss. I know I can't build muscle mass on a calorie deficit, which is why (with a lot of grudging), my winter will be spent bulking up and gaining back some of the weight I'm losing now.

Qualitative nutrition is also important - 100g of protein a day is a floor that the USDA should set; personally, I strive for 150+. As endurance athletes, we tend towards being carb-happy, since that is what fuels those long rides and runs, but protein is what helps the muscles rebuild. Also, there's a practical limit to protein uptake by the liver - usually about 20 to 30g in two hours (hence my mid-morning and mid-afternoon yogurt / protein bar snacks).

Looking at your training log, I would posit that you might be running too fast - it seems your average is around 10:00/mile. Slow it down to 11:30 or 12:00/mile. I'm running 25+ mpw, and my average pace is probably around 11:00 flat.

Well traded in my bike for a swim today due to family commitments and getting the evil eye from my wife. In all fairness to her though I was going to try and leave her for 3 hrs in the middle of the day with our daughter when she had errands to run ( I didn't know about this before....communication!)

Good news is that the swim was great, have some new swim jammers so I am not scaring all the old ladies in my mostly-see-through swimwear (NOT PRETTY)

Annnnnd tomorrow morning I am going to get up early to bang out an hour on the bike and then brick it up after I get home, with a run avec mon Wife and Daughter!!!

Super pumped!

Hope training is going well out there...and I hope beer drinking is going better

Yeah, dealing with children and spouse can be problematic at times. Good news is that you still got a workout in! Good luck with the brick tomorow. Did mine today. Going to post that entry next. Have a good one!!!

Got a brick workout in today. It was GREAT!!! (Am I allowed to say that about a brick?) For those who have not followed by posts, I have cramped after every brick workout and on race day. However, today I took a magnesium and potassium supplement and...NO CRAMPING!!! Times were good. Bike: 16.97 miles in 54:35 (18.65 mph) and my run was 2.32 miles in 17:28 (7:31 pace). Hopefully the benefits of the supplements wasn't a fluke and will work from now on. Have a great weekend everyone. We're off to Florida tomorrow. OWS in the ocean, can't wait!

Hi everyone,

I did my first OWS on Saturday, did a beginner OWS yesterday hosted by our tri club, tomorrow I have a beginner tri also hosted by our local tri club 300m OWS, 8 mi bike ride and 2 mi run. I've also signed up for my first official race, the San Diego TriRock (sprint). I'm not fully capable of swimming the distance non-stop but after being out in the OW this week, I feel confident that I'll be ready by Sep 22.

Have a good weekend everyone, I'll report about my first race later.

Great to hear, man. OWS is so different from pool swimming. With the wetsuit, it's pretty easy to just pause and bob in the water, and you can hang off kayaks and things if you need a break.

Time to vent frustrations. This month, I have been all over the place eating, and I hit the scale this morning, thinkg that this has been a good week, and I should have an okay number, and I'm up about 7 pounds since the start of the month.

That's with 46 hours of training, and 27,510 calories burned. I should be seeing 17X, and now I'm barely under 190.

So, of course, I have four donuts at work and eat gyros for dinner, posting a negative calorie day despite 3,100 yards in the pool and an 8 mile run.

I mean, really, how do I gain weight while working out 12+ hours per week? I thought at some point it would get easier, but I keep falling off the wagon. I have made no progress on the weight front this entire year.

The frustration is very bitter.

I feel your pain. I lost a weight loss challenge last year training for HIM. I had a week to lose 3 pounds to make it to goal, but opted to eat healthy and rest up for HIM. In the end, you train hard, you need to fuel your body properly. sometimes that will mean a gain. It will Ebb and flow. Keep making smart choices with food, hit your workouts, and you'll get down.

Had a 22 mile ride planned that got cut down to a 13 miler due to poor planning on my part. Got out the door, and flatted :30 seconds into the ride. found a nail shard in my tire. Glad I saw it prior to changing. Unlike Bill, I took 15 minutes for my change. So, with the ride cut due to poor planning and a flat, I rode angry at a 19 mph pace. (that's fast for me.) I should ride angry moor often.
I'm on a beer fast till the end of the month when we get paid. 6.2 mile run tomorrow.
Get out and get a workout in!
