The best compliment I can think of while training was one morning in the pool. I swam later than normal and one of the regular lap swimmer guys (who is a beast in the water) hopped in to share a lane with me. At my next rest interval, he stopped and said "Oh, it's you. I thought you were Kelly". Kelly is a former NCAA champion swimmer. So I took that as a very high compliment

Today is my 1-Year BT Anniversary!   I wrote a lot about it in my blog, but the true highlight has been "training with my friends at BT!"  Seriously, the people here are incredible, and y'all have definitely been a huge part of that--I'm blessed! Thanks everyone!

I got a blue ribbon today!!!! Forget biking, I should just go back to my swimming roots!

had a 3km ocean swim with tide going out on us pretty fast.  Did it in 51:14.  I was hoping to break an hour maybe... I am smiling because i've been really tired all week and haven't been motivated.  Had a REALLY slow 1000m swim on thursday and it sucked so I went from a goal of doing it under and hour to just finishing.  the first 500m my wetsuit felt like it was choking me and I thought I was in real trouble.  But after the first boey it was all good.  I am totally surprised to get first in my age group however.  I think its because two of teh overall women were probably in my age group.

I'll post a race report soon.

After the race I also chatted with a guy who is headed to Penticton in August to do his

32nd IRONMAN CANADA...

wow! He said every year for the last 5 years he said this one will be the last. Then 5 miles from the finish he starts thinking well, this wasn't so bad.. with 2 miles to go he starts thinking, well maybe one more. and by the time he's crossed the finish line he's looking to sign up for next year.

After the 3km swim he headed home to go do 100miles on the bike. Honestly after my swim the 25km I did to run errands riding really slowly were like the death of me! Granted I was carrying all my gear, but yeah coming out of the water doing a bike ride was the last thing I wanted to do :)

Lyssa!! What's up lady, we've missed you!   Yeah, only one year...but I was running like a "Crazy woman" (according to my fellow Soldiers) for about a year prior to that during the deployment to Iraq.  My family thinks I'm obssessed--I tell them I'm just dedicated and wait till I'm training for Boston and an Ironman next year...but truly, what else is a single 28 year old who lives in a crap town and has very limited options as far as friends go cause of the whole rank thing supposed to do?  Better to be healthy and fit than what happens to some of them....I'm one of the few who has had to have their dress uniforms taken IN since we were commissioned....

Okay, I really should go to bed, but I was watching Ironman Lake Place where I was totally inspired and will probably dream about IM tonight.  KathyG truly is someone I look up to--and she just did great--as did all the BT'ers out there.  WOW.

"running like a crazy woman" oh yeah. that sounds like some good times! LOL
have a had a couple of really awesome runs this week. much happiness. oh yeah, and NEW BIKE IS ARRIVING ON THURSDAY!!!
finally i'm going to have a DECENT bike to ride, and i've almost elevated it to magical proportions, "once i have the new bike, i won't have to expend ANY energy, i'll just FLY" clearly i realize this is FALSE, but in my mind it's become a HUGE thing. LOL
i raced on memorial day, and on the plus side, i beat my old time by 7 minutes, on the ohmygoshihatemyself side (LOL) i was DEAD LAST. i did NOT love that at all. i had issues on the swim. i got about 1/4 of the way through it, and the water was so cold i couldn't breath, then i THINK i may have had a mild panic attack. i didn't pull out of T1 until something insane like 23 minutes!! i think i managed to shave a few minutes off the bike, AND the run though. just gotta say though that it SUPER much sucks to come in dead last. have another race (danskin) coming up in like 3 weeks. (yikes)

Lyssa - HOORAy for the new bike! You have been waiting for soooo long.

And reading between the lines having the new bike means you will WANT to go for a ride which will be a great thing for you getting out there! nothing like something new to help with the motivation right?

Woohoo!

Yay for the new bike, Lyssa!

Congrats on a great swim, Jeni!

More of the same here. Nothing new or exciting, except my daughter is sporting a black eye. She got hit in the face with a baseball at a friend's house on Friday night. That's about it for excitement.

Just make sure you tell her to tell everyone else that "you should the other guy."  I got black eyes twice as a kid--both from sister, one when she was asleep and turned in the bed and whacked me accidentally, the other, when playing in the pool and she whacked me accidentally.  Kids and accidents.

Lyssa--make sure you post us pics when you get that bike.  And from what you wrote too, just remember DFL is better than DNF or DNS...the fact is, you were out there, and how many people don't even have the guts to go!  But, with a new good bike, and the training you'll want to do it, and what the bike is made for, well, you're just going to get better and learn to love riding I think!  I remember just back to March when I couldn't imagine loving riding...now I do, and I am looking forward to this weekend where I hope to push the farthest I've gone yet.  It's all building blocks, just keep building!!

thanks brit!
i know it'll get better. and i've enlisted my best friend to do the labor day tri with me. she jokingly tells people that she's training to come in last, just so *I* don't have to do it again.LOL

actually, i was just bragging on another thread, yesterday i went running, and took my mom--who's never run before. (she'll be 63 tomorrow) and she went a mile and a half, and i'd say she probably ran a quarter of it. that and i got my best friend running too. she's gone from a size 18 to a size 12 (!!!!!) in only like 3 weeks!!! it's INSANE. but getting HER to run, AND getting my MOM to run too, oh YEAH!! i totally forgot! my sister who had a baby in january called me yesterday and said SHE had run too!!! (she said she HATED it, and never wanted to do it again though) anyway, i've decided i'm an epidemic--and i'm SPREADING!! LOL

as far as the bike. well. like you said brit. i CERTAINLY can't imagine LOVING it at this point, but i DO know that the new bike is going to make it a lot easier to GET to that point. it's supposed to be here thursday, but i'm secretly hoping it'll come today or tomorrow. LOL

As for your sister... running is strange... even if you hate it sometimes it still gets under your skin.

Lyssa--WOOHOO, way to get the others out there pounding the pavement!! My sister, the pregnant one, is hoping to be more active after the birth...so i'll be working on that.  She wrote an email to the ladies of the family (my aunts, mom, and I) and made the comment of you either have to "become a triathlete or a vegan to become svelte" hahaha! (My Dad has gone Vegan and is pretty healthy and slender these days)...I'll get her out there one of these days--if just running, I'd be happy with that.

woowhoo for the running!

so a new set of eyes on my hip has told me my L3 vertebrae is out of whack and what I feel is referred pain from that.  So my hip is a combo of a muscle weakness and a back that was a "time bomb. " So that's why I don't feel it on the bike because my back curves one way on the bike letting the disk/soft issue around the vertebrae slide out but then when I sit or run I put pressure on it.  So I am doing what is called MacKenzie movements to recenter the the disk... lots of mermaid like poses   But I can still ride my bike

I am however suffering from a lack of motivation to ride lately.  I am thinking I need some new short term goals to accomplish. I have been feeling tired but when I do ride my power/heart rate is in its normal range so I am not physically tired just mentally not into putting in the efforts and I haven't been feeling the endorphine high lately.

yes, pictures are required once you have it all put together! How exciting!!

Jeni- I'm the same way, I need goals to keep my motivation up--thankfully (and woefully at times) my crazy A-personality makes me plan and pick things out way too much in advance!! But yeah, pick something out.  Good to hear that you are making some progress in figuring out the back/right side pieces...I need to stretch some tonight and get a massage. My right neck/shoulder area gets too sore in long bike rides.  Beyond races, I have some motivation to continue to ride fast as I got my race wheels this week and they make my bike look oh so incredible...now just gotta get that engine on the incredible side!  In the "push myself goals" I signed up for a 2.4 mile OWS in 3 weeks!?! I can do the distance, I know that...but I've never done it in open water.  However, if I can do that one okay, it will a.) make the Oly and HIM swims seem oh so much easier--which mentally for me is huge cause I keep thinking--when will it be over, when will the swim be over and b.) give me an idea of what to work off of in the future for IM training next year.  I still can't believe I'm gonna sign up for one of those...it's gonna be some major training...but excited about the journey as well.  Not committed yet (like Pam is for IMCdA!! )...but once I buy those plane tickets to FL to jockstrap this year, well, I might as well be signed up at that point.

Anyhow--I need go go drink some water and stretch! BEAT THE HEAT!

can't wait to hear about your open water swim.  I've discovered i always get a panic attack like feeling the first 500m because I'm not warmed up.  But knowing that it happens and it goes away made my 3km swim easier.  But I thought my wetsuit was trying to choke me for a while there. And i forgot a spot with the body glide.. nice red chafing mark there right now. Having the open water swim association has been great!  about 50 people show up to do the 1100m loop at one of the local beaches. But after one lap its always hard to motivate myself to do a second... it's such a far ways to the first boey!!

i think I am going to head to Penticton in August to watch the Iron man and cheer people on.  I definitely won't be signing up for next year but it will be fun to cheer people on and my friend wants to go so he can sign up for next year. he's a great runner but lame on the bike.. so we'll have to work on that

I feel unmotivated without races, too. Since I have plunked down a chunk of change on CDA, that is in the back of my head to keep me working out. I'm a bit more flexible and slack since I have so much time before the ironman, but it does make me think that I need to work the sports I can do so when I am healthy enough to run, I can maintain my superior swim and bike fitness (giggle) and build my run

Pam--not sure why you giggle--you swim like a fish and your cycling is way strong--I think your plan is great and makes sense.  If you have a major strong base on the bike and swim, maintaining it will be easier, and you can focus on running and mixing up the three.  Heck, I'm not even registered for IMFL '09, and it's over 15 months away...and I am already thinking about what to do now to help then!!

Jeni--have fun at IMC!! My guess is you come back with a plan of when you want to give one a shot...maybe not next year, but I bet it tickles/inspires you to plan one out! Just a guess...

So, I found this quote, don't know who wrote it, but I love it--and regardless of what level you compete at, excellence is internally evaluated, but externally exhibited...I think it was very appropriate for triathlon, and life in general...I LOVE IT:

"Excellence is never an accident; it is the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction, skillful execution and the vision to see obstacles as opportunities."
