Did anyone see the creepy clown that was kind of lurking by the woods by himself in some random spot? I didn't like that very much it was kind of creepy, lol. Also there was someone wearing a weird mask right before you turned into Cross Plains....that was pretty creepy too, lol.

That clown was great! I saw him on the first loop right before the hill hiding behind a light pole. For a second I thought I was in the movie "It". He was creepy but the people on the hills were amazing! Especially considering my day was full of pain from my legs locking up before the swim. It was a LONG painful but amazing day.

Congrats to everyone that raced Sunday!!! (is it Tuesday already?) I was volunteering inside the 1st turn buoy on a kayak, no one stopped to say "hi", I'm not sure why , what a rush!! It was a great place to volunteer, & for the most part everyone did really well in the water. At one point, a guy stopped swimming (he was probably 2,000th at that point), & said "am I still in 1st?". Made my day! I knew with an attitude like that, he would finish. We went back to the finish from 10-midnight, & it was such a wonderful, emotional experience!!! I loved seeing everyone's faces. I'll be there in 2013, this time as an athlete. Hope to see some of you there!

The creepy clown was awesome, the Sasquatch (or was it Chewbacka?) was excellent, and the woman with the fake plastic azz cheeks was the creme de la creme.  She made me slap her on the run and then yelled, "oooooooh yeah you like it big boy".  That definitely picked me up late in the race when I wasn't feeling so great about myself!

I haven't been active on this thread, but I've been lurking all along (training, kids, life, etc.) but I wanted to add some random sights and thoughts from the amazing day we had in Madison yesterday.

1. I was Zombie-marching into transition yesterday morning and this tall, skinny guy with glasses started screaming at us like a banshee about something (motivational) and it clicked...this was 1sttimetri! I semi introduced myself and wandered in, but it was super cool to have a random BT bud, so Thank You Mr. Donkai! I loved it even though I couldn't articulate that at the time.

2. I have read (on BT) for years about how amazing the volunteers at IMOO are, but until I actually experienced it I didn't really understand what it meant. During the course of my day I had wonderful people dressing me like a big baby, happily following my orders while telling me how awesome I was, pointing me in the right direction, lubing me up with sunscreen and vaseline, and generally catering to my every race-induced whim. It was magical.

3. The hills on the bike course were a cross between Mardi Gras and the TDF.  I shouted at some guys in speedos (hey sausage boy, help me out here) and they went nuts! Running beside me, happily taunting me and finally sent me off with a slap on the butt. Priceless. I actually looked forward to the hills on the second loop just for the buffoonery.

4. Whatever you do, if you can be at the finish line for a while just before Midnight, DO IT! We almost didn't go (hubby and I finished close together) because we were so broken. But we dragged down there, and watched the magic. I saw a guy hanging around at the top of the chute, and I remember thinking what was he doing, why won't he finish? About 10 minutes to go, he comes thru with his wife and daughter (they were in their 60's, she looked late 30's-early 40's), and they all crossed together! He obviously got sent ahead because they weren't sure they were going to make it, and waited to see if they did. I can't tell you how powerful it was to see them all make it together. I cry every time I think of it.

5. When they tell you to put a little safety pin in your timing chip strap, DO IT! That mass start is no freakin' joke.

There's more, but that's what a race report is (surgery and iffy training, vomit, chain dropping, marginal kidney function, ridiculous items in special needs bags, etc.).

Big thanks to everyone for sharing their day! I loved reading along and hearing how it went. I am so proud and happy and trying to hang on to the afterglow. I hope you all are too!

Regards,

QuincyF

Great moments to share! I was a finish line catcher until midnight and helped that family when they crossed. It was so much fun to spend a few moments with them, what an incredible thing to do as a family! I didn't realize he had to wait for them. Just amazing.

There is a lot of magic during an Ironman, sounds like you experienced a lot of it!

Wow, money surely is a motivator and I'm not saying there is anything wrong with that.  FinisherPix are up already!

I am almost positive that was Chewbacca, btw.

Hmmm, not sure.  I was assuming that general slots were still open, but I didn't take a closer look.  Only the Foundation slots are remaining.

I'm trying to get the three hills between Cross Plains and Verona declared a National Historical Landmark.  Seems pretty reasonable to me.

So who else HATED the new swim course?  I had a much harder time getting free from traffic and I think it actually slowed my swim time down....  Outside of that, it was a great race!   I'm trying to decide if #3 will be IMWI again or if I should try someplace new.

Congrats on your 2nd!I'm curious why you thought the one-loop swim made it harder to find clean water?I thought it was slightly better, but I was also a little better prepared, so could be biased by that.Either way, it was another spectacular day in Madison. Was hard to keep myself from reg'ing for #4!!

Congrats to you too!  I'm also ready to sign up for another one, but my wife..... well, lets just say I'm smart enough to wait Sealed

My swim was significantly faster going in to this race than I was in 2010, so I expected a time around 1:10 to 1:12.  I just could not get clean water at all and ended up fighting traffic for 1:23.  I moved inside the buoys after the second turn and was okay for a couple minutes, but that didn't last. In '10, I seemed to find an opening after the 2nd turn and it lasted for almost the whole swim. I swam 1:27 then.

thanks for your help !

There is a shuttle from the AEC (Alliant Energy Center).  There are some hotels near there.  I'm sure that there are also many other shuttles.  Last year we stayed at the Best Western Plus Inntowner on University Ave and they had a shuttle that was on demand/call!  They also provided free warm breakfast for IM athletes/volunteers/spectators.

This year we stayed at the Best Western Inn on the Park.  No shuttle needed as it was a 5 minute walk from it's location on the square to the Monona Terrace doors.

I hope that gives you a good start on a couple of locations.

my family had no problem finding parking about two blocks from the finish line both at the start of the day around 6:30 and again in the afternoon after spectating on the bike course.  cheaper than the AEC parking and shuttle.

When I drove downtown (just before 5 am) there was tonnes of on street meter parking available (free on Sundays).  I think I parked about 3 blocks from the finish line.

If you go back several pages you'll see that I was most concerned with the swim start, but I had very little contact.  Even the last sprint tri I did with 120 people in my wave was 10 times worse as far as contact goes.

I stood on the shore in the rocks all the way at the front.  At 6:59 I saw an open spot all the way at the front just off the shore and swam out there until the gun went off.  I was probably 2 or 3 people back from the front row 5 or so people in from the shore and it was awesome.  The guys up front disappeared pretty quickly (I'm not that fast of a swimmer) and the people behind me swam around gracefully and I was able to hook on and draft for a while on just about every person who passed me.  I gradually worked closer to the buoys but ultimately stayed a good 15-20 yards outside the buoys the whole way around.  I certainly added a few hundred yards to my swim overall but I wouldn't change it for anything.  I came out of the water relaxed and refreshed with a 1:19 swim and a smile on my face.
