Extreme Veteran 553 New Brunswick, Canada | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Hey, I'm here <cricket> Bryan - did you happen to see a guy or girl at the Longhorn 70.3 wearing "Tri The World" gear? He is from my hometown of Ottawa and is part of the www.runningmania.com forum that I post on. He and his significant other are doing (they may in fact be done now) 16 HIM's in 11 countries over 8 months this year. He's a testicular cancer survivor and doing as a fundraiser. Amazing. His t-shirts have printed on the back, "It's all fun and games until somebody loses a nut" It's Thanksgiving today but we actually celebrated yesterday because Stephanie heads back to uni this morning on the bus. We had a great visit with her and she enjoyed being home. I'll get to see her again in 2 weeks when I go over to PEI to close up the cottage for the season. Tomorrow is election day in Canada. Did any of you even know? We are inundated with news of the US election but I suspect ours isn't even on your radar unless you're a real world news junkie. Our system is very different - a parliamentary democracy - so we don't actually vote directly for our Prime Minister (PM) but rather for a Member of Parliament from our local riding. The leader of whatever party gets the most local members becomes the PM. Polls suggest that the Conservative party will form a second straight minority government so the PM will remain the same - Stephen Harper is his name. Hope to get out for a run today to work off some of the turkey etc. from yesterday.

Big ol' cold storm here over the weekend. It was 27 degrees (F) this morning when I got to work. The bike commute was rather nippy. Frost all over my jacket. It is supposed to warm back up this week, so that will be nice. Pete, thanks for the lesson on structure of the Canadian government. Seriously. I'm considering moving to the great white north depending on how our election turns out Now go burn off some turkey. Dan, a good win for the Spartans over Northwestern on Saturday! Movin' on up in the polls. Big game for them next week - if they win that one, look out! sTRIve! |

Did a 5.5 k run today. Absolutely gorgeous fall colours here. I'm sure it is similar in Mav's and Dan's necks of the woods. I love this time of year. Cool, crisp mornings/nights but quite lovely during the day. here's a pic my daughter took yesterday whilst out on a "hack" (apparently this is what you call going out with a group of friends for a ride on your horse!) And to prove I love him just as much as I do his sis, here's a pic of son Chris after his football game on Saturday: |

Uxbridge | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Pete what nice family pics. Hope you enjoyed your holiday. I have my back to the TV as I can no longer watch the carnage of this Sox game. Not a very good game so far. I had a great race today. I drove into Boston and parked at the Prudential Center. Same street as the Marathon finish line. I ran from the Pru to the Boston Garden as a warm up and met up with a fellow BT friend who I talked into doing her first 10K. We walked around a bit and then it was time to get started. They had self seeding and I placed myself at the front of the 10 min line. BIG mistake. There were 5200 women(this is apparently the largest womens 10K in the US) The slow crowd did not thin until mile 3. I just was not running very fast. Mile 1 was around 11 mins! But OK the scenery was spectacular...the trees are in full color, sailboats on the Charles...you could see the sky line as you crossed the BU bridge. Just beautiful! I finished in 1:01:19 a PR for me. I could have probably completed in under 1 hour if it was not so crowded...but maybe next 10K. I watched my friend finish her first 10K...so proud of her...she just started tri's 6 months ago. We met up with another friend of mine and headed toward the Fenway/Pru. We had a great lunch at an outside cafe. It was a wonderful day. So much fun. I love to race. Oh, I was 219/632 in my AG. I think I am going to do a duathlon in 2 weeks...I cant get enough racing |

Veteran 281 | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! TURTLES! Sorry about my absence. I have "caught up" on the banter for the past 2 weeks and have several comments: 1. Bryan - WOW 17 miles ran and then biked for 1 hour! I am impressed (and you sure must have a lot of time on your hands!!!!). The 20 miles should be no problem for you after training like this. The HIM is still intriguing to me. It scares me more after learning about some of your difficulties, but still intriguing. 2. Mav - you know we were all pulling for the Sox just for you!!!! I was so disappointed. I am only a fair weather baseball fan, but stayed up for the games and hoping they would win just for you. Maybe next year! 3. Leston - I know it was last week, but I also watched some of the BYU/TCU game. I was pulling for BYU (Hey, is this a LRR pattern of losses in big games??? Sox, BYU, MSU .... 4. FBP - CUBA! We can't even think of going there! Have a big Cuban for me ;^) ... The pics were great. How did you son's football team turn out? What is happening on your running classes? Have the students progressed? I would love an update. 5. Juanita - are you still here????? Here is an update on me: 1. On Oct. 11th I decided to do a duathlon (5K run, 20K bike, 5K run). I just found out about this 2 days before and told my wife if we didn't stay out too late the night before (I had a client who promotes local boxing matches and he had one going that Friday night that we were going to!), that I was doing the duathlon on Belle Isle (a beautiful Island between Detroit and Ontario about 30 minutes from our house. A real gem of a place before it was taken over by "teenage gangs" 15 years ago. However, Detroit police have been cleaning it up and it is again beautiful!). Making a longer story short, about 1 1/4 miles into the 1st run I "rolled" an ankle very badly. We moved from a paved pathway to a grass field. While running on the field I must have hit a hole, twisted my ankle, fell to the ground in pain. Several runners tried to help me up, but I refused as I was still in excruciating pain. I had to get out-of-the-way of the other runners and limped up and off the course. There was no help to be seen and I limped about 1/4 mile back to the 1 mile water station. There were 2 lady volunteers at the station and said I would wait for the cart, but not wanting to sit down and let it swell, I told them to send the cart after me as I was walking back. Needless to say, the cart never showed and I walked the entire mile back to the beginning. Took my bike out of transition, got in my car and went home. My ankle was a mess! Severely swollen and brused. I elevated it, took 4 advil and rested the entire afternoon. The next day, it was still bad and I stayed off it all day. On Monday, I went to work in a soft pair of shoes (couldn't fit into my work shoes!) and limped around. It was painful, but I managed. All last week I could not work-out. I went to the hot tub just to soak the foot. Swelling finally came down this past weekend, but it is still painful. I am walking much better, but by the end of the day, it hurts. It doesn't feel like anything is broken, just strained and sprained. I have not been to the doctor, but if it isn't better by this weekend, I just may do so! I finally swam yesterday, putting one of those floatation thingies between my legs to keep me from kicking. I swam 500m with my arms only. IT FELT GOOD TO GET SOME ACTIVITY IN! I truly missed it! 2. Last Sunday was the Detroit Marathon. I was supposed to be running in the relay (with my youngest daughter and 3 others). When I rolled my ankle the weekend before, I knew I could not run. I got my oldest daughter to take my place (after as hassle with the people who run the marathon, they finally saw it my way and we got the change to happen!). That was truly an experience watching a race rather than participating. I certainly missed participating, but watching had its own "issues" to deal with - particularly with an event this size (12,617 finishers). I will try and write more about this experience later. 3. With the injury and lack of physical activity, it has been "nice" to sleep-in until 7:15 and go straight to work. I know I can't get caught-up in that mentality again however. I am heading back to the pool tomorrow morning!!!!! 4. Bryan asked about our plans for next year. Here are my early thoughts: a. Detroit Athletic Club indoor Triathlon in February (20 min/20 min/20 min format). b. Lifetime Fitness indoor Triathlon in March or April (10 min/30 min/20 min format). c. Sprint Triathlon in May or June d. 1st Oly in July e. Here is the problem. I have a special spot for Chicago and have a desire to do this next year as an OLY. However, I have just learned about an HIM being ran the for the first time (on the same day) in Nothern Michigan close to our "Up North" home. This is an extremely rolling hilly area and the swim will be in Little Traverse Bay (Lake Michigan). I am very intrigued about doing this after Bryan's experience. I am not sure what I want to do!!! Anyway, there are my thoughts for now. I'll do my best to keep everyone updated more often. Mav, thanks for your "inspirations!" Dan ps BIG rivalry game this weekend with scUM. Go GREEN!!! |

Hi All, Thanks for supporting the Sox...sad the season is over...but at least I'll get to bed at a reasonable hourI must admit it was fun but hard to watch at times. Bryan 17 miles is such a long way after a HIM. Please be careful. When is the marathon? Dan...GO FOR IT....Do the HIM....I'm going to try too next June, or at least thats the plan. Whats the worst that can happen??? Really nothing...so JUST DO IT!!!! What plan do you think you will follow? Hey Sticka, I am sure you are running like crazy. Habla Espanol???? My husband is spanish...I only speak spanglish!!! I see there is snow in your forecast, Sorry so soon! Hey Leston...is the house done??? I am painting the exterior of my house...everytime I do it I swear it will be the last time. Somehow that never happens. JUANITA????????????????????????????? I have been checking out the website Endurance Nation...very interesting reading . I have been doing alot of running...nothing over a 10% increase / week...I have learned the hard way. I am however having an issue with my right knee. It clicks when I walk up stairs. I feel like the tin man from Oz. Any thoughts? It doesnt hurt unless I climb alot of stairs. No pain when running. I do have an old meniscus tear that I never got fixed, but it doesnt feel like that. I dont want to go to the MD. I'm thinking arthritis...or maybe itjust needs to be oiled!!!! Extreme Veteran 1338 | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Dan - duathlons are tough....I wish you could have done it to compare it to your tris this year. About next year, I personally would recommend you get a couple of Olympic distance races in next year prior to the HIM. The lessons learned in a 3+ hour event are invaluable and you will be in better shape next year. I was fortunate to have the HIM late in the year so I could easily do two Olys spread apart by three months before the HIM...then a month after the second Oly it was HIM time. I have no doubt you can do it, but the 3 hour experience I think really helped me as the clock kept climbing higher and higher.....7 hours is a LOT different than a hour and a half as we all know. So if you can get in an Oly or two prior to it to check the fitness, certainly go for it. Dan - GO TO THE DOCTOR Leston/Dan - some of us were rooting for the Horned Frogs....smile. Mav - knee clicking....sounds like old age.....ROFL...spray it with WD40 and take another Condroitin (sp?)....or maybe your hubby put a playing card in your spokes so he could hear you coming and you wouldn't be able to sneak up on him. By the way, there are all sorts of parts of me that creak and pop and click and all manner of distracting effects.... Mav - marathon in January....I have three more long runs before the marathon. Thanks for your concern but I feel really good. I am fully recovered I think - I ran three miles today nice and easy. I am looking forward to some extended time off in January after I run it. I have actually done almost nothing the last two weeks....this past weekend got me moving again. I had Active Release Therapy today. If you ever get a chance to check this out at a race expo, do it. Any tightness anywhere can be helped. I have tried massage and just hadn't found someone who really knew what I needed. ART really was helpful. Google it if you want to learn more. Mav - Endurance Nation - I am a member of the forums and have considered buying their season plan. I have invested a lot of hours on their podcasts and video and have learned a lot. I am considering buying their plan maybe in 2010 - they have been around a while but are tweaking the plan quite a bit. They market themselves as being different and maybe they are but they come across to me as pretty similar. There is a lot of bike and not a really long run compared to some other plans. A lot of intensity work, big fans of power (not required but certainly helpful) meters, very little if any swimming until pure race prep starts. I am currently comparing six plans for next year to see what I am going to use. I am building an Excel spreadsheet to see the differences and similarities between them. sTRIve Turtles sTRIve |

Extreme Veteran 553 New Brunswick, Canada | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Wow. Great to open up the site this morning and see all the updates. I was starting to wonder whether our group was drifting apart now that tri season is done for some of us. I sure hope not because I love staying in touch. There was so much news that I've had to open a second window so I can conveniently flip back and forth to respond/comment on all the points in previous posts. As for the Sox, I too was really hoping but 'twas not to be. On the upside though, there is a player on the Phillies from ... Freddy Beach !!! Matt Stairs is the player and he is a local hero as you might imagine. He has played with a lot of teams (including the Sox) but is probably best known as an Oakland A. He also has played with both Canadian teams - the Expos and the Blue Jays. Go Matt Go !! My Learn To Run group is progressing well. We are at 4:1 now and step up to 5:1 tomorrow evening. I have a core group of about a dozen that are really dedicated but sadly just lost one of them due to a non running related broken ankle. My own running and swimming has been slack of late. I've done 5-6k at the most on the weekends and haven't been to the pool in a couple of weeks. I have been continuing to ride my bike to/from work even though it is getting really chilly in the mornings (just below 0c) and depressingly dark at 7 a.m. No firm plans yet for tri's next season, beyond the one wehere I willbe guiding Myra (July 11). I need to spend some time looking at event calendars for planning purposes. I was in Montreal on Friday to receive a "National Volunteer of the Year" award from the Canadian Diabetes Association. Very humbling. Cool too that the founder (and owner) of The Running Room chain, John Stanton, received the National Corporate Partnership award. It was his program that I followed when I first started to run and it is through the RR store that I teach plus Jill teaches there and is a p/t staffer too. Yes, Cuba is a permitted destination for Canadians. It seems to me that the US of A is drifting towards communism - travel restrictions first and now government intervention in the markets resulting in nationaization of some financial institutions. YIKES. What will be next? Canadian election was almost a non-event. $300 million to hold it and in the end the same parties were elected in alomst the exact same proportion. YAWN. Veteran 281 | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! FBP: Bryan is right about your award. I find it difficult enough to do my own training without trying to fund raise at the same time. You my friend are truly an inspiration and now all of Canada knows what the folks here at LRR have known since January - FBP is the best :^) .... I also agree with Bryan: HOW ABOUT THOSE SPARTANS!!!! :^) ... I passed-up tickets several times since my youngest daughter had basketball games at 3:30 and 5:15 (right at the start and end of the game!!!). It was a killer, but I wouldn't miss her games for a Spartan game (even though they lost both games .... I am still excited. I said at the beginning of the year that we would win 7, or at most 8. Now 8 or 9 is realistic (Wisconsin, Purdue and Penn State remaining). We need to show that we are not "typical" Spartans and lose the next 3 games!!!! Just like Bryan has pounded in our heads since January, Consistency (isn't that what LRR is all about!). Ok, Doctor took x-rays and says I have a "stress fracture" on my bone. You could see a "lump" on the x-ray where the ligaments pulled part of the bone away. I am to do the following: 1. Rest 2. Ice 3. Compression 4. Elevation (Ok that was for Mav and FBP!), but I am basically doing just that! No running for 4 more weeks; no biking for 2 more weeks; swim as much as I can and use my legs; it is OK to lift for upper body. Keep wrapped in ACE bandage, but not too tight. If it doesn't improve in 3 more weeks go back and see him! I finally lifted Saturday morning (boy did that feel good!). I then swam. I also swam this morning. I will lift again tomorrow morning - I sure do miss my "old" routine! Leston: What happened to your Cougars???? I was pulling for them this year and had high hopes!!!! Debbie, aka Ms. LRR, is BACK in a boot - about a year after her last one. She had not really run for almost a year and as she began to get back into it, has once again fractured her ankle....the left one this year. She had a bone scan done yesterday as we don't think (me that is, with my extensive medical knowledge) that the Boniva has been very effective in adding density. I KNOW this time her duration and intensity increases weekly were monitored by a very insistent (read PITA) husband/coach. She is out of the Houston half in January and has been told no running until next summer at the earliest. Hopefully we can make some headway for her in the next few months. She is about to fall in love with her bike. Mav - the marathon is in January....MLK weekend. Here is the schedule for the next few weeks.....this weekend 20 miles, then next weekend 5 miles, then a weekend half marathon, then 5 miles, then a weekend run of 23 miles, the a couple of 5s and then the LONG 25er.....a taper of a few weeks and then it is here.... Sure is getting dark early now and although we've yet to receive snow, it won't be long until we get the first few dustings. Our Freddy Beach baseballer, Matt Stairs, won a cherished World Series ring the other night with the Phillies!! The big news is that Mrs FBP was offered a job this week. It is a part-time term position in the Student Employment Counselling centre at UNB. It is exactly the kind of work she wants to do and perfectly aligned with her Master of Adult Ed studies , which she will continue to do along with the job. I've been on the road for collective bargaining this week ( ) and will be up to Toronto for two days next week for meetings. This is a big weekend for marathoners - the NYC marathon goes on Sunday.
