I think we have gone a bit backwards, not forwards. Off topic: I watched a bit of the US v Uzbek U-17 match last night. And a foul really had me scratching my head. Actually, back to back fouls did. 1. US striker on left side drove quickly and deeply into the box. Had a bit of a rough touch and was sprinting only about 10 yards to catch up to the ball. Uzbek defender then ran across him, they collided and the US attacker was called for the foul. Ref was 30-40 yards from the play and the lines man had a much better view from across the pitch. That was a foul that did not make sense. Should have been a PK, at least I thought so. Talking head calling the game didn't say a word about it though. 2. Immediately following, Uzbek on counter, in box and flops. Clearly flops. CLEARLY flops. Awarded a PK to send them up 2-1 (final score). Again, ref was well up field, 20-30 yards away and lines man had a much better view. Very poor calls. |

Yeah. The Uzbek youths after that call were flopping all over the place. Much of it in an attempt to milk the clock and take any chance at momentum away from the US youths. To me, it is one of the worst parts of the game today. Would love to see fines and cards handed out after the game for violations. |

Shows the gulf in talent at this point... Interesting comments by Howard about the presentation etc...I sort of agree with him but the delivery of the message could have been better Lots of debate about Bradley...but overall its the talent that is the differentiator This is an understatement. The chip shot, with Howard scrambling like a crab to get the ball and about 4 other players around was just absolute class. I don't think anyone on our team would even know where to begin to try to do the same thing. Our severe lack of talent can be continually boiled down to how we develop the kids. Or for that matter, don't develop them. And watching some of the U-17 recently, the pipeline is not looking too good. Mexico did it right. They had an aging team a few years ago and invested in rebuilding their youth pipeline. And it has paid off. They are very talented right now. And we aren't. We are ranked 22nd right now, but that will start to drop soon, as it should. We don't deserve that ranking. I wish there could be some kind of huge shake up in USSF. Would love to see Gulati gone. And Bradley (even though he is tied to the talent he is given). I just see Gulati and the rest like the old foggies in NCAA football who are more interested in getting free trips around the country picking out who is going to play in what bowl instead of doing what is right for the sport and doing a playoff. USSF is the same, right now, in my eyes. They would rather see short term gains for themselves than long term gains for the program at large. Just my opinion. |

I would prefer to develop, because doing so sets a long term strategy for sucess. But we just aren't doing that. At all. Would love to see a resurrection of that 5 part series from a few years ago. Yeah, my boys in Red are a very young squad. I think something like 5-6 of the starting 11 are 22 or younger! They actually have a pretty solid defense but unfortunately, we are VERY unlucky when it comes to putting it into the back of the net. We have speed but we don't have good control or decision making. There are, however, some bright spots. This new kid, Orr Barouch, seems to have good confidence. As he ages (he is 19) he might have a great nose for the net. And Chavez also has great pace, but I think he is down on himself from so many missed opportunities. Heaven knows how many games we SHOULD have won this year only to have a draw instead. We have 11!!! Can you believe that!?!?! Henry is a bust. I'm not convinced that Beckham was worth it now either. And there are others that are being linked to come over, but like you said, they are in the twilight of their careers and they aren't interested in playing, just making the money. I wonder what the fix is for this. Frankly, I personally think we should try to limit the DP (Designated Player) growth a bit, continue to build and strengthen the core fan base with good, high quality play, and then expand with more player names. To me, it would be a better growth model because then maybe the names would want to come not only for the paycheck, but also the quality of football. |

Teams are playing a lot closer than they were 4 years ago. But some of the powerhouses look(ed) very shaky though, which has produced some sloppy soccer. Disagree about Pia though. She is unconventional, yes, but she has changed something in that team for the better. After Greg Ryan, she helped them bounce back VERY quickly. She is very instinctual, which is odd for soccer players who learn to play tactically, but she has turned them into a real team. The US does not have as much individual talent as some other squads, but they work together very well for the most part. What GKs did you have in mind that were playing poorly, too? Interested to hear... |

GK's - did you see the goal England scored on France? that is just one example....overall the quality of goalkeeping is not very good especially on anything aerial - cross, shot etc....look at the goal Wambach scored...the Brazilian keeper should not have come for that, or in the first half when solo missed the cross completely....if I was coaching I would be pumping high balls into the box all day... Re Pia...there was an ESPN segment on her approach...most notably the former UNC players didnt like the 7:1 rule...7 praises for every 1 negative comment...Anson Dorrance's approach was to foster competitiveness between players to get the best out of them...I think that approach is better and his success speaks for itself. Greg Ryan was a mistake but I am not sure how the US has lost its dominance over the Women's game. With the number of players that play at HS/College etc...they should be formidable...but, to me, they have regressed Just my 0.02c.... |

With female GKs, aerial stuff has always been and will always be a weakness. As a female GK myself, I can attest to it up through the collegiate level. Those examples are really nothing new and different from previous Women's World Cups. Now, I'm not saying that the goalkeeping has been wonderful, on that I totally agree. But it doesn't shock me what mistakes have been made. Those examples you gave, the GK should have stayed on the line, but they both overestimated themselves. Pia is no Anson Dorrance, I totally agree. But she has been relatively successful, as well. I don't agree with her approach, but it seems to be working with this group of girls. 4 years ago, the team was a bunch of individuals who couldn't pull it together. This year, they are a true TEAM. That's why I like Pia. She's molding them as 1, not as 21 different stars. RE: the US "losing dominance," I don't think it's just that the US has regressed. More teams are getting better. More countries have developed women's leagues now, and more players across the board are playing professionally. Years ago, the US was the only country that really fostered women's sports, but this is no longer the case. I actually enjoy it. As much as I always want the US to win, it's exciting that the World Cup is MUCH more competitive this year than in years past. I'd love to see it expand to 32 teams like the men's soon! Though I think that'll still be a few more WCs. Interesting to hear your take though! |

Expert 1207 Parker, Co | Subject: RE: Any REAL football fans here? Frankly the US were dominated today by France...but thanks to some poor French Goalkeeping ( proving my previous comments) the US came through....3 of the 4 goals should have been saved. Other nations have improved but the US has been stagnant...they have less flair and structure to their play than before and frankly their touch on the ball is sub-standard. The Japanese, Brazilians and the French all show better technical ability...its the intangibles that make the US successful and the desire of players like Wambach. The French have a dedicated academy to their Woman's soccer federation and it shows, the US needs to harness the huge base of players and distance itself from the rest....i dont believe that there is any sense that they are losing ground...but to me it seems glaringly obvious. Dont get me wrong, I am pulling for them....hoping my 12 yo daughter gets some inspiration to get outside and practice!!! |

They defended like a Rec team...both goals were embarrassing....since U9 you are told not to clear across the box...then on the second they let a center back hit a 50 yard ball over the top for a 1 on 1 that they escape..but the resulting corner they dont defend the front post and concede. They panicked when they were ahead each time...and not a single change from the coach until she brings on Heath....weird. Poor coaching and poor on field leadership. Also thought that the advantage referenced on PK's was for Japan since they had seen them shoot once already was overstated....in 1999 DiCicco had Chastain hit hers with her left foot since the Chinese keeper had saved one of hers already...and changed his lineup....this time..same sequence except for Heath..and a predictable ending....just not a fan of this coach... Glad a technically superior team won...my prediction is look out for France in the near future in the Women"s game |

I said this same thing on the first goal. Defense 101 is to clear to the sides and she served that ball right up for the Japanese player.
And the PK that cleared the top of the goal by 10 feet......horrible. |
