wgraves7582 - 2009-11-12 7:38 AM Well doctors be d&m*ed I went for a bike ride last night.  A long slow bike ride but I did it and I don't care how my ITB reacts.  It was not improving with doing what I was doing and my back always loosens up so nicely after I ride.

So I rolled it out a lot when I got home from swimming and it feels alright.  Going to go again tonight and am planning on a cyclocross race Saturday if all goes well.

I will avoid running until 12/1 but this weather has been way too nice to skip the bike!

Hope the ITB is behaving post bike!  I went to a cyclocross race last weekend.  It was amazing and a blast to watch.  I'd love to try it sometime, but need to seriously ramp up the bike handling skills.  More time on the MTB would probably help.

Yes it would - KathyG on here does a lot of them and she never rode mountain bikes but wants to to get better at the handling.  Especially out east here all the rocks and roots will make cross seem easy!

must admit....I spend alot of time pushing the mtb up and down the hills.  Boy can I get anaerobic fast on the mtb.  Much tougher workout than on the road.

Yes it is great for interval training!  More people should integrate that with their daily ride training but glad they don't so the trails stay empty!

You ever been to Jim Thorpe, PA area at all?  That is real nice there!

Never been there.  We have so many great parks and trails right around where I live that I've never ventured out.  The LBS does a great job of keeping the trails well kept.

MORNING KIM!

What's up for the day?  I swam this morning.  Felt great.

long run.  6-7 miles.

swimming and ST tomorrow.

what kinda of sets did you swim this morning?  or do you do long endurance swims?

stacieb

Today was Masters Swim and the coach normal puts together the workout.  She was out today with H1N1 flu, so I just swam a long endurance swim. Tried to really focus on form.  I only learned to swim a couple years ago, so I'm really slow and working on getting balanced in the water.

bugger the coach has H1N1.  hope she's feeling better.  nice that you have access to Master Swm.  i know our team usually puts together some uber fierce workouts....

thats so awesome that your already doin' tris having just learned how to swim a few years ago.  goes to show you can do anything you set your mind to.

ive been focusing a lot on my form in the water.  its amazing how much those tweaks in body position make a difference, balance in the water being one of them...

are there balance drills that you found helpful, or are you just mindful of that when you swim?

whats your typical workout ANN?

stacieb

My swimming needs major improvements. I typically do 8x25 as a warmup. Then a ladder 25, 50, 75, 100, 75, 50, 25. After that I just swim laps, working on form, or just kicking.

I need to find some drills or something else to do to help me improve. At one time in Tri Talk there was a link to a simulated video that showed what your form SHOULD look like as you swim, from 4 different angles, and what muscles you use. I have been unable to find it again.

The swim is what's keeping me from signing up for the Oly at Black Bear. I can breathe, or I can kick, I have a problem doing both.

Are you a good swimmer?  Someone I should admire and envy?  Or someone I can happily share a lane with and not look like a dork?

We could happily share a lane. I'd make your swimming look GOOOOOOOD!!!

Excellent.  A lane we will share then.  Seriously, why didn't I learn to swim as a kid????  Will fuss at my mother when she comes down for Thanksgiving.  I took a Total Immersion workshop 3 years ago and it was terrific in helping me get to the point where I didn't think I'd drown after 2 laps.  I even had lessons with Terry Laughlin in New Paltz in their endless pools.  But I am SOOOOOO SLOW!

wgraves7582 - 2009-11-12 8:55 AM Stacie - just want to tell you a story about how good ST is for you.

Last night I was getting ready to walk to the shower to go swimming at the Y and I did not notice how wet the floor was where I usually turn (notice usually was used).  This time I bit it hard.  Went down on my left arm fully extended and thought to myself this is not going to end up real well.  I put my full body weight down hard and it is a little sore this morning but no damage.

So my story and my logic is that if I did not strength train like I do (which includes swimming) I could have destroyed my rotator cuff or broke my arm very easily.  I think shoulder would have had most of the damage because my arm was extended.

Glad nothing bad happened but also glad I ST.  Just plan on staying on 2 feet from now on while in the locker room!

OUCH!!!

If anything is sore though, and needs rubbed... I'm just sayin'

That's why I signed up my kids up for swim lessons this year. My daughter had her first lesson at 5, she is a fish, she LOOOOOOVES the water. My son was 9, I wished I'd had gotten him in the water sooner. He doesn't like to get his face wet, and WILL NOT jump in the deep end. He likes to go canoeing, fishing, to the ocean, so he needs to know how to swim.

I tell my kids all the time they are going to regret not wanting to take swim lessons - I would pay for them all forever.  Great workout, great way to get a scholarship, and a great exercise to be good at if you ever want to do triathlons.

They just say no they know how to swim just fine.  OK whatever!

My daughter never stops moving. My son on the other hand would rather spend his free time on the couch playing his Nintendo DS. When we were at the pool the other evening during free swim a man came to the pool who was easly in excess of 400lbs. My son pointed and made a comment. After I reminded him that pointing was rude, I told him that the reason I always push for him to get off his bum and do something is so that he doesn't end up liked that. I told him that sometimes medical conditions are involved, but that if you eat junk and don't exercise that you can easily get to a weight that isn't healthy for you. The past 2 days he has been on an exercise kick, and last night asked for a banana instead of a cookie as a snack. We're going swimming again tonight.

Hmmm.  We haven't chatted about food for quite some time.  I don't know why.  I think about it constantly.

I was just thinking about that last night. I'll let you all know if I come up with any good ideas for dinner tonight...

perhaps this....

Ingredients
1 (15 ounce) can black beans, rinsed and drained
1 cup cooked brown rice
1 small onion, finely chopped
1 egg, lightly beaten
6 tablespoons salsa, divided
1/4 cup reduced-fat sour cream
4 lettuce leaves
4 slices reduced-fat Cheddar cheese
4 hamburger buns, split

Directions
In a large bowl, mash beans with a fork. Add the rice, onion, egg and 2 tablespoons salsa; mix well. Drop by 1/2 cupfuls into a large nonstick skillet coated with nonstick cooking spray. Flatten to 1/2-in. thickness. Cook over medium heat for 4-5 minutes on each side or until firm and browned. In a small bowl, combine sour cream and remaining salsa. Place a lettuce leaf, burger, sour cream mixture and slice of cheese on bun.

this sounds yummmmmy!
