Excelent! good for you. All that training paid off. I guess your injuries didn't slow you down, are you going to pay for it tomorrow? Heidi, bike shopping is going slow. Not finding anything within budget and to make mathers worse my dog just injured is back leg. We took him in yesterday and found he lost 10 lbs which would not be normal, he's 8 yrs old and was a 90lb lab. So they did blood test and found some abnormalities, so we had to bring in urine sample this morning and now waiting on results. Pending test results he's scheduled for leg surgery next week. Either way it's going to be very expensive. Maybe I can use my 5 year old's princess bike.

Really sorry to hear about the dog, Sylvain.  I hope that ends up going OK.

You can do a race on just about any bike, but a Princess bike that's 7 sizes too small might be stretching it. Smile

Michael, congrats on the first place. I expected it though. You are the mentor of this group so you should know what your doing. ; ) Really, nice job! Sylvain sorry to hear about your dog. I hope everything is ok. That can be tough on a family.

Went out for long run this morning. Attempted 12 miles on the track and the knee was fine until mile 9 then it began to "bark" a little. I backed off and finished after 11 miles. More out of fear than pain. This afternoon it feels pretty good. The track seems the way to go and then balls out on the 11th. If I need a week to recover after that so be it.

I'll brag a little myself. Before run weight.......... 226.7 .......... 1.7 away from 100lbs. lost on this journey.

That is awesome Phil.  Very inspiring.  Keep it up!

It sounds like you made a wise move on the run.  11 miles is plenty to prepare you for the race at this point anyway.

Phil, that's awesome! 100lb mark just around the corner. I'm speechless. I'm sitting here on the couch watching hockey and reading our Mentor group and Micheal's race report. My brain is going 100 miles an hour thinking about all the inspiring words I see daily, I can't even follow the game on TV. Can't wait to hear from Scout and his race.

It's great to see everyone reaching their own personal goals.

Keep up the great work everyone.

Phil-Congrats on the weightloss- it's very inspiring.

Sylvain- I hope your dog recovers fully, and that his health issues are easily resolved.  Riding a princess bike would ensure that you get your picture on the race website.

Sylvain...Sorry to hear about your Lab.  Hope everything turns out OK!!!  Our White Westie had to have some fluid drawn from his spinal area behind his brain last fall and I remember feeling so bad about it all.  My positive thoughts go out to you and your lab.  Animal surgeries and test can get quite expensive, but are well worth it given what they give back to us.

Phil congrat on the weight loss and you arriving at your this destination on your journey.  Still trying to lose 10 to get back to my destination on my journey.  Up and down plane ride.  I need to put it on the front burner this month as a goal again and get rid of it before the middle of May.

Congrats Michael!  Way to do us proud!  Unfortunately I have no such news to share about yesterday's 5K.  I knew that I wasn't going to have a great day when I started to cramp during my warm up.  I started okay, a little faster than I wanted.  My first two miles were 7:40 ish, 7:50 ish.  The cramps came back in mile 3, and I had to stop and try to stretch it out.  8:30 something.  anyway, My garmin time was 24:59 (at least I still broke 25!) but my official time was probably a few seconds higher.  I started my garmin as I crossed the start line, and not when the RD yelled GO (no on your marks, get set......just GO).

Anyway, I got to meet some great friends from the Runners World forums, and had an outstanding day, regardless of how well I ran.

I do think though that I need to find another 5K in early May to redeem myself.

I'm in the blue jacket with the black fleece cap.

Scout, that sounds like a great day, for a great cause.  And I think you have every right to count that as sub 25!

It looks like it was chilly!

Well, next is getting over whatever bug I picked up in the past few days.  After that it's getting back on a training plan.  Winging it doesn't work for me.  My next scheduled race is the Delaware 1/2 marathon in May.  But I may find another 5K in early May to try and get that sub 24....

Great job Scout, I would count it as sub 25 also. You fought through the pain and finished the race with a great time. Now you have a new goal to aim for.

Sub 24 is definitely in the cards.  You were totally on track until you cramped.  I still say the good money is on you.

Hi All,

Wow... big week for everyone (except for Phil... who is getting smaller all the time!)  Congrats to Michael, Scout (definitely sub 25), and Phil.  Sorry I've been quiet for awhile... was down in Florida for a conference and a family visit.  While I was down there got in a 35 and 45 mile bike ride.  It was really nice to ride on some flat ground for a change that wasn't a bike machine.  Next goal is working in the rides to work at least once a week (approx 36 mi r/t).  6 weeks out from the tentative HIM and still can't envision it.  A 45 mile ride was a step in the right direction, but in some ways left me with more questions than answers (and a flat tire).  Anyway, 10 miler on Saturday first - PR is going down (1:36) if no surprises like cramps (yuck Scout)... but whisper goal is sub 1:30 if conditions are right.  This is our local "big race"... with about 3000 entries.  Haven't done it for a few years, so I'm excited to be back in the mix again.

I'll update the goal chart after the end of the month (Wed), so post your progress on your training pages.  I've done well on the training and horribly on the nutrition.  Two solo 20 hr drives this week was the low point of that goal (St. Paddy's was right up there too).   Looks like I'll have to try that goal again in April.

Cheers,
Stu

Just came back from ortho. The fracture hasnt healed- so he wants 2 more weeks on crutches. He also has no explanation for the nerve issues that I'm experiencing in the same foot. He's hoping 2 more weeks of rest will resolve that issue too.
From the Fx perspective I have the okay to swim, and bike if I can get my foot in the shoe.
But, from the nerve sensitivity issue, swimming is pretty painful still.

I'm feeling pretty stuck.

Michael- incredible performance over the weekend.  Your running split in particular was very impressive.  I was so inspired after reading your race report yesterday that I went for an hour long jog (this after two beers and plate of nachos during the Duke-Baylor game).

Due to a scheduling conflict and some recent issues ('life' can be so pesky sometimes) I've had to bag my scheduled 70.3 race in July.  I am completely off of my training plan- as a great Scottish poet once wrote: the best laid plans of plans of mice and men...

I did, however, sign up for a sprint on April 24 in order to force myself into a more disciplined approach to training and nutrition.  Luckily the swim is only 300 meters.  This will be my first triathlon since the kid version I did as an 11 year old in 1989.  I am excited!

Stu- good luck in the 10 miler.  Crush that old PR.

Sorry to hear that, Heidi.  That's hard news.

OK, everyone, let's think of ideas -- good workouts that do not involve feet!

I'll start with the obvious -- core work.  This seems like a pretty good time to get into a core routine, since you won't have that pesky swim/bike/run to get in the way.  Here are a few links for ideas:

So sorry to hear that update Heidi.  I'm with Michael on the core idea.  What's your thinking on the bike?  Focusing in on the bike this time of year fits pretty well and would keep the cardio from slipping too much.

Semi-theoretical question for the group.  If one had, say, $200 from a St. Paddy's gig to spend on biking equipment, what would one spend it on?  Basically, right now I have a bike and a 10 year old helmet.  No biking shirt, gloves, clamping pedals (just have the cage things for running shoes), indoor trainer, clip on aero bars, etc.  Thoughts/ideas?
