LORI -

What running shoes do you use?

Have you spent any time at www.chirunning.com, or www.newtonrunning.com? They both have lots of stuff to say about midfoot running. The guru of Chi, Danny (Denny?) Dreyer, has a couple of published books on it.

Off to a swim and gym!

Happy trails!

gdsemiller - 2011-01-18 4:25 AM Boy you know when you are tired when this happens.

At our gym when you walk in they have a wall with hooks where you can hang your car keys.  Well I put my keys on the hook and went upstairs for my workout.  When I finished I came down grabbed my keys and went over to talk to some friends before I left.  When when I was leaving I went back to the hooks and stood there for about 2-3 minutes looking for my keys.  Once I could not find them i thought of my gosh someone took my keys.  I was about to walk outside to see if my truck was still there and if someone just broke into it.  On my way out I felt something in my hand and guess what, there was my keys.  Well I hope everyone has a great day.  I do have a question.  In tri races, do they allow Ipods, I didnt know if you can listen to music on the bike and run.  I know in the past on just running races they always have a clause that no ipods allowed, but everyone still brings them.

Thanks
George

Haha! Funny story! It's like looking for your sunglasses when they are on top of your head.
The tri's that I've done do not allow any type of electronic devices.

Just an observation....I am, by far, the slowest swimmer at my 5:30am masters swim. I know a lot of it is because I've only been swimming a year and a lot of the other folks are competitive swimmers but really now! Now I'm in my normal post swim fog drinking my morning cup of coffee and trying to refocus for the day
Hope everyone has a great day,

stevebradley - 2011-01-17 10:47 AM DANIEL - Missed workout? Let it go! At this time of the year there are no "key" workouts, so there's no need to cram anything in wherever it can fit. Moreover, given that each workout should have some purpose, it doesn't help to put two workouts in on one day -- this usually just leads to both workouts being "compromised" to some degree or other. Does that make sense to you? Motivation is hard at this time of the year -- even for people who live in sunny and warm California! Motivation is also tricky to force; that is, ordering yourself to get out the door and do something. This works okay for some people (myself included), but others juts end up resenting themselves AND the workout. You might try this a few times, however, and see how you respond. Sometimes self-flagellation can actually grow on a person the more they do it! And may I ask ----- how many workouts did you do last week? You say you missed two, but how many did you DO? If you scheduled six and did four, that's okay! If you scheduled four and did two......all right. If you scheduled two, and missed both ---- oops! But it really is just an "oops" --- nothing "worthless" about it at all. I will also suggest that you have other things happening in your life that justifiably take your mind off the primacy of working-out. I went through a bad psycholgical patch during my last year of working, and one of the things that set off my alarms was that I no longer enjoyed working out. This just let me know that my head was NOT in a good place; might that be the case with you? If so, definitely do not get too hard on yourself!!

I scheduled 5/6 workouts per week: 3 swim, 2 run, and maybe a bike ride on sundays if I feel like it/can get a partner.  I hate riding by myself, it is just too dangerious based on my past luck (hit twice in college).

I feel so worthless.  I skipped 2 workouts last week because I just did not want to do them, I pretty much drank all weekend with the guys, and to top it all off I did not watch any football.  Man I am falling apart.

What do you guys do when you miss a workout?  Just brush it off and keep going or do you double up some other days to make up the distance?  I am not trying to be so hard on myself but I have not felt like doing anything lately, it is really frustrating.

There are only 2 real reasons why I take rest days.  My kids are up sick or the night before was a late night out with friends.  As I get older, the kids being up is more common than the late night but there are still times.   You still have to live your life.  You don't want this to happen too much but hey, it happens.  Its ok.  Like my running buddies (and drinking buds) say, we are drinkers who have a running problem.  Never go back to do skipped workouts.  You can adjust your schedule but the past is the past.  It's about balance.

The best thing about drinking with your running buddies is that they usually feel about as bad as you do the next day.

I guess I need to start hanging out with people who also train.  My drinking buddies only do progressively lighter, right hand curls. When beer is empty repeat.  I will have to remember to not go back and make up the workouts and to just let it go.

Hey Champ,

Your name says it all. You're a champ anyway. In 2007, I trained for the 2008 Ironman. The worst thing for me was that in terms of training and work and relocating home to NZ, I'd bitten off more than I could chew all in the one year. The hardest part for me was that I gave myself such a mental beating if I missed a workout, that I found myself being motivated by self-hatred at times because I knew I was sick, or too tired to complete a workout, but did it anyway. The results: Didn't make it to the start line. Picked up a horrific ear infection and needed 3 months of antibiotics to shift it. So in the end, I lost out big time.

A break is a break, and sometimes (even when you doubt your motivation), you NEED one. Cut yourself some slack, bro, you'll win at this anyway. It's all good. And, in case no-one's told you, a few beers with your mates is medicinal, therapeutic and necessary. Do you really want to race? If you do, your motivation will return. I promise!

Jac

I don't want to race I just want to finish the events this season.  Maybe next year I will worry about what the time to complete is.

We all miss workouts.  The only thing that gets the bad taste out of your mouth is the next workout, fortunately as soon as you get in the water, or on the bike, or tie your shoes it's all about the present and the missed workout is history.

I did get a nice 800yd swim in yesterday and BOY did it feel good to get back to working out.  To top it off A few friends and I are going to go for an evening bikeride down the rivet trail.  it is a nice and long straight 65 mile bike ride(round trip), We are only doing about 20(round trip) tonight.  But it will be nice to get back on the fixie!!  :-)

Everyone misses workouts. People drink too much especially when we're out with fun friends Brush off the week, it's over. You're going through a job change too, aren't you? You're making a lot of changes. Just refocus yourself. Think through the week and build on it. We are the hardest on ourselves. Give yourself a break and go out and enjoy the nice weather So Cal is getting right now.

Yes I am between jobs right now.  I will try to be nicer to myself from now on.

Sometimes your mojo goes missing.  My mantra is, "fit in what you can and don't sweat the rest".

Sometimes it is mental and sometimes your body is just telling you it needs a rest.  Either way, a few missed workouts won't be a problem unless it becomes a trend.  Be good to yourself!

It will surely not become a trend at all.  I feel great after a workout and I will not let that feeling go away.

Everyone,

Sorry for the long post.  Thanks for all the in-site and kind words, it will not be forgotten.

Hey Steve,

Thanks so much for the information.  Happy to know that eventually there will be a light at the end of the tunnel!  I tend to be a loaper when I run but I don't exactly heel strike.  Just a lazy, injury prone stride that progresses into overstriding when I start to do speed work.

I wear Asics Gel Nimbus shoes for both training and racing.  I just purchased some Asics Gel Cumulus to try out in sprint tris and 5Ks.  I have very hard to fit feet and need an AA width and still need to wear Thorlo socks.

I just want to share with everyone in the mentor group that you are, by far, the best mentor I have had on BT.  So happy to be in this group!  I will have loads of questions in the future about transitions, open water swimming, and race strategy including hydration and nutrition.  Thanks again!

If you just want to get rid of those numbers, eliminate all of the info in the "Calorie Expenditure" area of the Settings --> Training Log Settings --> Log defaults'

I am going to try it right now because I don't want it either.  I think it may take a bit for it to update your defaults before it will be eliminated from your blog.  I will let you know.

Thanks Lori,
I think it worked.  I removed what I could and then went back into my log and had to delete my weight and then it did not show.  I guess tomorrow when I have a new log the info I deleted today from settings will not pull.  Thanks for your help..

George --> Both races (USAT sanctioned) that I did last year....no electronic devices were allowed. Even though I typically run with an iPod...a couple of weeks before my race, I ditch it totally. If you are used to running with tunes, the first time you don't can be a little weird...especially during a race when all you hear is people wheezing and panting and their feet pounding! Of course most races have music at the start/finish of the race....although I'm usually running on pure adrenaline at those times in the race. Where's the music when I'm midway through the ride and trying to climb a hill??

On another note....I'm taking M-W off this week. I have a test this Thursday that I have been studying for 10weeks and I don't want to blow it (nothing exciting...work related and 1st of 3 tests) , but I'm still looking forward to getting that behind me and catching up on my training this weekend!

Hey all - Been keeping up the reading and I'll chime in with some things here

DANIEL- Glad you got back to a workout and feel better. Good encouragement from the group. I'm praying for your job situation. I know that's got to be a major stress.

JOHANNA - Cheers to you for getting that 18 miler in. It's good to know you're still working on your nutrition puzzle and that it's coming together.

ADAM (or should I call you the MACHINE)? Way to impress your doctor/fellow triathlete

CATHY - Your observation about your hand causing bubbles in the water has me interested. I never paid any attention to bubbles. Steve's comments were informative, as always.

JOHN - I loved your suggestion about watching football and using the trainer. Bring on the weekend's division championships!

DUNCAN - Wondered how you're feeling now that you're a few days beyond becoming an "Ironperson"?

KASIA - How'd the bike ride go on Monday?

JAC - Welcome back - I second Johanna's suggestion of a drumming video.

JEFF - I'm too lazy to look it up, but what does your signature say and what language is it? I'm totally ignorant of anything other than English.

ROGER - Congrats on putting up the 1000th post!

MANNY - I'm glad you're feeling better after your concussion. I've only taken one yoga class ever, but I keep hearing the benefits are great. Keep it up!

GEORGE - You always have good questions and others always have good answers. For a USAT sanctioned event you CAN NOT use an Ipod or listening device at all. You'll be disqualified if you do. They stress that at the events in Indiana, any ways and our USAT officials are tough on the rules. For all the running events from 5Ks on that I've ever done they always allow them.

LORI - You DO have a hard foot to fit. Mine are pretty normal and I used to use Asics but now use Zoots or Newtons, Brooks or Avia (depending on the color of my outfit).

CRAIG - Good job on improving your run. You'd asked about pace. Boy, I'll defer that question to Steve. Start out slow and try to speed up each rep like you did your last one. If you're legs are getting too fatigued, then slow it down again.

SHANNEN - Your girls are beautiful. I just noticed you're from Ohio. I was raised in the NorthEastern part in a little town called “Hartville”. My parents still live there and there are still Amish with horse and buggies on the road.

DAVID - Good luck on your test(s).

MELINDA, ALEX, GENE, SARAH, LAURA, ELLEN, BOB and the rest (where ever you may be) – keep up the good work, taking one day at a time.

STEVE – I have a question for you on your log time, but I'll ask later since I want to do some math on it. I want to post this quick before another MOJO posts something. Boy, this group is hard to keep up with!

Steve,
Thanks for the reply.  I do start teaching next week and I figured out how to make ht ecustomized plans work better.  It is very like th 20 week program but I was able to tell it when I could not do things and have lighter days on Tuesdays and Thursdays when I have 2 classes each day.  It added in some strength training also so I am all set.  All I have ot do now is plan ahead.  I think I have discovered that is a hugh part of this stuff. If you are not prepared the night before it is easy to pass over the early morning slot and think you can fit it in at noon or after work. Well... that usually does not happen and I end up frustrated and missing workouts.

We just tokk my son back to college last weekend so I will at least get more sleep.. They certainly do change their first semester.  They don't sleep at night any more.  I used to be able to say it's bedtime but no more.  Even though I miss him it is much more relaxing at home now.

I will run on the treadmill when I aarrive home to night and get up and swim in the morning.  I will have to do a medium bike tomorrow at lunch time.

Gearing up..I hope it remains fun.  It is cool to cross the workouts off the list.

Good story.......but mercy me, you're too young for such a "senior's moment"!

Naw, that can't be the case, so let's try a different theory, that being that your workout generated so many endorphins that they ran rampant and hijacked the common-sense portions of you brain. Can you live with that explanation?

As for electronic devices, definitely not for USAT races, and likely not for a little old independent tri run by a small community somewhere. Being plugged-in would be disastrous on the bike for any number of reasons, and at that point it's just easier for RDs to outlaw everything straight away rather than make an exception for people on the run portion.

This works well for me, as I never* listen to anything, ever, when I'm doing a workout. I will even ask the gym, sometimes, to either turn down the music or turn it off altogether. I will tolerate it most times if it is very low, but I really get a lot of inspiration and general good vibes form hearing the natural-born noises of a gym!

(*Urp. The above is not quite true, as virtually every one of my indoor rides is accompanied by the TV.)

ELLEN -

Fine job of proving who's the boss between you and the customized plan! That is really useful that you can tell it when certain things will work and when they want, and then it crunches that info for a while and regurgitates something more workable for you. I'm impressed! (Both by your tech savvy and the plan's accommodating nature!)

You're so right about planning ahead when there is actual a plan in palce from which to plan. In my being-coached days, Erik sent me three-week blocks, and not only did I go over them scrupulously about receiving them, but I would augmetn that with multiple viewings each week. I just found it highly valuable to have a good sense of not just what was on tap the following day, but in most cases for the next three or four days. Part of it was a "psyching" factor, but mostly it was just to keep it all very clear what was expected of me.

Nowadays, I go through the days/weeks/months kind of extemporaneously. I have a rough idea of what I will do each week and when it will happen within that week, but I don't hold myself to tightly to anything at all. That is especially true of this time of year, and partially explains why I just had those two very big-volume weeks: all those workouts just seemed like a good idea at the time!

BUT -- Getting back to your situation of needing to be prepared so that you don't pass over doing something early in the morning, I can certainly relate to that! All those good intentions that are formulated in the a.m. can dissolve in a hurry after work, for about 17 different and valid reasons.

I hope the run on the 'mill was a thrill, and may you have a good swim tomorrow morning! As for the noon hour bike, where will yoiu do that and on what type of bike.

Finally, that's a funny story ("They don't sleep at night any more.") about your son, and feeling some relief with him now back at school. Yeah, we get used to rattling around a child-free house, and then it's kind of a shock to the system when they materialize again, huh?

Enjoy crossing off those workouts!!

Two things I know:
(1) Many of the no-longer slowest swimmers in your masters class were the slowest swimmer is their own first master class(es).
(2) Along about this time next year (and I'd bet even earlier), your grasp on "slowest" will be usurped by several others.

So.........see that lane next to you? The one with folks who swim a bit faster than you do? That's YOURS next year!!

(And enjoy "life in the slow lane" while you can! )

DANIEL!

From your two post, am I right in thinking that you swam yesterday and did a run today?!? If so, nice rebound from the no-wokout funk! (See? Wasn't that easy?) ( )

I do all my riding alone, and I share your concerns but just don't have any viable options. What I'm about to say won't help you from getting hit or having a bad crash all on your own, but it might help ease your troubled mind. To wit:

Think about getting a Road I.D. I only just got mine a few weeks ago, but it certainly helps my frame of mind to think that if something happens to me I can be quickly identified and important people can be contacted.

The plate on my wrist band has six engraved lines on it:
name and birth year
town and province
Lynn's phone
Jane's phone
Peter's phone
"no known allergies" (I should've put my blood type here)

This is all customizable, and what you choose to have included is part of the ordering process. The website is www.RoadID.com. There are several different styles, and the cost is reasonable. It might help you feel slightly better about doing stuff alone? Maybe?

Again, congrats on getting back into the swing of things!

LORI -

You're welcome! And also, many thanks for the compliment; it is greatly appreciated!

I really do believe there is light at the end of the tunnel for you with what your are trying to change. To be sure! Keep ht efaith!

As for your speedwork begetting overstriding, that is probably the time that you do NOT want to overstride! My experience has told me that overstriding while doing speedwork can produce problems with hamstrings, Achilles, and calves. Over the years I have made it a point to never overstride anymore, and what has been good about a consistently faster cadence is that that has become my go-to mode when speed is required. That is, now that I can generate a high cadence, I no longer need to overstride in (too often injury-riddled) attempts at speed. So, what is comfortable for me at 90-92 can be cranked up to 93-95 when speed is called for, and all without increasing my stride length. I am sure you will get there, too, in time!

Yes, you do have tough-to-fit feet. Wow! My feet have no real size "problems", but i could never make Nike work for me becasue they were always too narrow. It sounds like you have a good thing going with Nimbus and Cumulus and thicker Thorlos, so it might not be worth looking for something narrower-than-normal. And with Nimb and Cumu, it sure sounds like you under-pronate some, too, yes?

Thanks again for your kind words, and keep those questions coming. For any simple question.....I have one of my patented loooooong-winded answers! (Can you imagine being a poor 5th grader in one of my classrooms??? )

No need to sweat the swim you missed yesterday! By my calculations you have 10 months and 3 days until IMAZ, and I have a hunch you will have lots of opportunity between now and then to more than make up for whatever was scheduled for yesterday.

And if 10months/3days doesn't ease your worried mind, then how about this --- 306 days. THREE-HUNDRED AND SIX!

Mercy!

(Psst! Well done on knocking off today's workouts!!)
