x2

I still wrestle with self esteem from time to time and always find it difficult to believe that I deserve to do well. That quote is kind of justification.

It's not a matter of if.... but when.

I went on a ride with a friend of a friend today... the friends we set up the ride with bailed on us so this guy I have met only once, briefly and we went for a ride.  Unfortunatly a third of the way in on our ride there was a long downhill and there was oil on the road right at the corner.  I had an oh moment and thought I might loose it.  He, behind me, hit the same spot and did go down... hard.  I went around the corner and looked behind me and he wasn't there.  figured he had a flat or took the downhill really slow so I turned around.  A car coming that way pointed frantically at me and back the way we had come.  By the time I got to him a car had stopped and two guys were checking on him.  The bike had somehow gone down on the left side and he launched to the right, over a ditch and into a bank filled with blackberry bushes.  And he hit hard. Another car stopped and he was conscious and talking so the first car took him to the hospital while the other car took me and the bikes.

We all figured he broke some ribs. The hospital did an assesment and they didn't really think he broke anything but had to wait to get him to ex ray.  Luckily his friends called on our way to the hospital (to ironically ask him to lunch) so they met us at the hospital and they took over trying to reach his wife. There was nothing much I could do so he told me to get out of there and ride up the mountain like we had planned. I did, but during the ride I get a text from his wife with the verdict.

It turns out he broke some ribs and punctured a lung.  Not good!!!! But it shows the importance of always riding with your cell phone and emergency contact numbers AND (the one we don't think about)  Your health insurance information!!!

hope everyone had better rides than me today.

holy smokes jeni!! scary scary scary!!!
i was just going to get on here and say that the weirdest thing i ever imagined had happened, i rode my new bike 10 REALLY HILLY miles, and TOTALLY enjoyed EVERY second of it!! i NEVER thought i would love riding, and the last two times i've been out (ironically-since i got the new bike LOL) i've TOTALLY loved it!! i really never saw myself getting to that point. my legs are killing me now, they're getting stiffer by the second LOL but i'm JACKED! i feel SO much better about the race on the 17th too knowing i can KILL the bike leg this time!

i almost feel guilty for having such a great ride when your friend got so beat up, and i just found out yesterday that martin from england who is on this site got super messed up recently too (broke his face all up and has had multiple surgerys-4everblue is his screen name if you wanna send an inspire, last i knew he was checking this site from the hospital!!) i guess it just really reinforces the while safety thing. you're right jeni about the cell phone and health insurance stuff. yikes yikes yikes!

Wow Jeni, hadn't thought about the health insurance piece, but boy did that incident drive home the issue.  I'm glad to hear others besides you stopped to render aide too, I'm sure that y'alls actions definitely helped in getting him necessary care as quickly as possible.  Prayers his way for recovery.

Lyssa--yeah!! That's what we wanted to hear--loving the bike!! Wonderful news! It is a lot of fun!! I am completely in a love the bike, love the run, "tolerate" the swim phase right now--not sure I'll ever "love the swim."

I will have to say, learning to love the bike actually won me a race yesterday--I took 1st in a sprint tri yesterday while competing in the largest field of women in my age group yet (62) and placed 67th out of the 799 total guy/girl competitors.  I'm pretty happy today--helps that part of winning was free coffee, how wonderful!  I truly don't know where this all comes from, but I'm blessed none-the-less and that's all I can say...I loved flying on my bike yesterday!

Congrats on the hardware!!!! WAY TO GO!!!!!!

My friend is doing as well as can be expected.  He's out of training for at least 2 months.  But he didn't have any races coming up but is a little concerned about building his base for next year's ironman.  I told him he needed an off season anyway.  But yeah, he's already concerned about going stir crazy.

In other news, I started my new life as a baker today, at the residency I live at.  The other woman retired and I saw the possibility for a way to pay for my graduate degree since I already help out in the kitchen and it's great.  I basically couldn't ask for a better set up but It's going to be a challenge (and you can't beat 60 second commute!).  At work by 6:15 am and baking.  I get off between 12 and 2:30 depending on when I get done making dinner's dessert.   Classes will start in September and are in the evenings.  So I am hoping that efficient training in the afternoons will wake me up for the classes. Luckily there is a lot of downtime on the job so I can get my reading in. But I have to find the motivation to get the training in.  I have energy so long as I have stuff to do but as soon as I sit down and relax I get really tired.  Today I was gonna ride after work but have yet to get my butt on the bike.  I am hoping part of it will just be adjusting to a new schedule.. but if you check my logs and see me slacking feel free to scold me!!!

Baker Jeni!! You must share any good recipes you use or try!! How exciting, so congrats your way! I am the same way in that if I sit down like you do, opps, there it all goes.  You were talking about picking something to train for, did you grab anything? Are you still planning to go jockstrap at IMC?   We'll check in your logs and keep you track!   Just don't tempt us too often with delicious baked goods you make!

I WON MY FIRST BIKE RACE!!!! Not only that but thanks to my coach who was riding for me we DOMINATED the race!  Took the sprint, pulled off the front and stayed away for 3 laps, and took the final win!!!

Check out my log for the RR and the "pedal by pedal" (aka play by play

I have an awesome recipe from the previous baker she called "breakfast cookies"  I call them kitchen sink cookies cause they have everything think them- nutts, fruit, oatmeal, chocolate... so I will post it.  They are great for a ride.

apparently she didn't pan so it's just "whooosh, whooosh" and a complete blur of color.  I told my coach I still wanted it though.

i finally GET IT!! the whole cycling-mania thing!! i GET IT!! i LOVE to ride now! it's a whole different experience now!! i'm so hugely in to it right now-it's a little scary! LOL

danskin is on sunday, and i'm TOTALLY jacked about the race. and i'm TOTALLY freaking out about getting to the starting line. i guess they are making us rack our bikes the day before, when we pick up the race packet, which is ok, i guess. not my first choice, but whatever. the thing is that where the expo is they have a HUGE chunk of the freeway closed off on weekends, so it's turning in to kind of a logistical nightmare, if i can just get myself to the starting line, i'm super excited about it.

i rode my Bike the other day, i have a 10 mile route (with killer hills) and i did it one day, then 3 days later beat myself by 6 whole minutes! i'm SO excited to see how the race goes since it's totally flat (i hear) it should be fun.

Lyssa - its so awesome to see that youve turned it all around!

Try not to worry too much about the start line logisitics... just make sure you head in early and that you have time to take it easy and not rush when you are setting up and everything.. that will help HEAPS with the nerves!!!

You'll have fun!  and sometimes those little things that go wrong as you set up gets your nerves under control. last week my chain fell off.  this week I got a flat while warming up.  and great races both times

enjoy yourself, work hard, and you always have more in you than you think you are.

So I had a scare!

cute guy+ volleyball + beach= twisted knee

Went out to enjoy the sunshine and we were passing a volleyball back and forth and stepped sidways on my bad knee twisted in the sand and went down. Felt a grinding feeling in my knee.  Got up brushed it off and it wasn't weak but it was sore.  over the next day it got worse.  So for the last 2 days I have been having worried thoughts about a retorn acl or a torn mcl or just plain bad knee stuff!  The thought kind of made me want to cry honestly.

Went to my magical physio therapist and she tested everything and confirmed what I had hoped it would be.  That I wrenched it and made the ligaments and scar tissue in my knee angry but nothing was permanently damaged.  We may be on the look out for some meniscus damage but it's a setback not a new injury.  She did some joint manipulation, massage, and accupuncture and I walked out of there 50 times better!!

The frustrating thing was that I had JUST STARTED RUNNING AGAIN!!! and the running was going so well that the morning before I injured it I was seriously contemplating a sprint tri the first weekend in september.  Oh well.  it could have been a lot worse.  And now I get sympathy from the cute guy

and cute guy-beach volleyball? oh yeah.

so danskin was yesterday, it was SO AWESOME.
i put up a race report, but lemme just yell it from here--I BROKE 2 HOURS FOR THE FIRST TIME!!!!!
i keep going to the website to check results again, i can't believe it. my last race was 2:06:01 and the swim was only 250 meters. this time my time was 1:59:04 and the swim (my weakest leg) was 800 meters!! the bike leg freaking ROCKED!! i did the whole thing in like 41 minutes!
i love that bike, i love that bike, i love that bike!!

ok, ok. i'll stop screaming now. LOL
