Lets keep this thread rolling!!

How was Halloween everyone? We only had about 30 kids come to the door which is even fewer than last year I was away from the office yesterday but for the past few weeks they have been decorating for the event and everyone was in costume yesterday. They won a challenge that we ad received from a couple of other departments. The prize is a coffee break paid for bythe other department!

Busy day of chores today whilst Mrs FBP is up at the library doing school work. Goal is to have the garage cleaned out so that the car can start being parked in there. Seems Mrs FBP doesn't like having to scrape the frost off the windshield in the morning!!

Have a great day y'all

Dan - did you need the defibrilator today....OMG what a game.

Mav - where you been?

FBP - I agree....it would be very easy to fall off the wagon in the next 60 days....

By the way, I ran 20 miles today....it was a tough run....getting hot toward the end.  Feeling pretty good now.  I would like to hear some of your thoughts on the following:

The bottoms of my feet hurt when I go long...I wonder if it is from them slipping around in the shoes?

The bottom of my kneecap area hurts late in the run....is that the patella tendon?

My hips hurt some too....in the front....once I get to about 14-15 miles.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

B-man - well done on the 20 miler. You are going to be so ready for the marathon!!

Re hot spots on your feet. Are you wearing good quality and fairly new running socks? I swear by the ones that are made of "smartwool" and I like the medium weight rather than the lighter thinner ones. Not sure what to tell you about knees, hips. Ice, stretch, rest is all that I can suggest.

Here is a link to a sock review I just found. He's not as keen on the smartwool as I am but nevertheless:

Hey Turtles,

Sorry that I've been off the board for a while. Too much going on, but not enough training .

Some great football yesterday, right Dan? Sometimes the kicker is the goat, but he was the hero yesterday. And Bryan, which Texas team were you cheering on yesterday? That was one amazing game! Oh yeah, and the Cougars won! Yipee!

Anyway, just a quick checik-in to say that No, the house project is not done yet. Also, I am leaving for the airport with my wife in 1 hour to leave for our Mexico cruise! Way excited here.
Anyway, I will be out of touch for a week. Should be fun.

Maybe with some down time I'll get a chance to put together a plan for next year's season, Bryan.

Ciao for now.

Hummmm Cuba, Mexico... I am jealous. I just ran 4 miles in 30 something temps!!!!

I have been busy. I finished up my teaching job. It was a fun semester. I am considering returning to school to finish my masters. I started a while back but never finished. As much as I enjoyed teaching...I was not too fond of working full time. It kind of gets in the way of my real life.

I have been doing alot of running. Will do my first half mary in Feb in Hyannis on the Cape. I plan on doing the Patriot HIM in June ( the week of my b-Day) before I turn 51. Goals this winter 1. to shed the last 10 pounds, or at least not gain anything 2. Increase my running distance 3. maintain my swim distance 4. bike at least 3 hours/week (starting this week) even though I HATE the trainer and 5. Lift weight at least 2 times /week. Yesterday I swam 4100 and it felt great. I really love to swim...wish I felt the same about the trainer. I joined a challenge team here on BT to try and stay motivated...it helped with running. My LONG term goal is IM Fla in2010. OK Bryan I said it...I really mean it!!!

I just finished painting my house...almost. I have a small section to complete but it just got very cold quick. I hired a guy I know to do the peaks and dormers. Going real high is kinda scary.

Starting to get ready for the holidays...I do enjoy my favorite sport...shopping!!! My husband says I am single handedly bolstering the economy

Dan, I hope your foot is starting to feel better.

Pete when does your class have their first race? Any snow yet?? Are you still riding to work??

Bryan ...things are looking a little hopeful on Wall St this past week I continued to be inspired by your running. A 20 mile jaunt on the wekend would put me out for a week, quite possibly longer. Especially a couple of weeks after a HIM. Too bad about Debbies fracture...can she swim???

Stay warm turtles...or better yet...go to warm places

It seems everyone is doing well....although the training volumes sure have dropped....

Mav - IMFL 10....you go girl....should I quote you from earlier....it went something like.... I WILL NEVER, NO REALLY, NEVER, NEVER................seems someone said be wary what you say.....hmmmmmm.....  Your plan looks good, now we know it is in the execution....

FBP - how is the group....when do they run.....

My next run....6 weeks next Saturday....then the Rock N Roll Half Marathon with my brother here in San Antonio....

FBP - I use Balaga socks from South Africa - didn't know that when I bought my first pair but I really like them....I switch out between the comfort and the thin ones....both are dual layer and wicking material.

Leston - I just love good college football so it didn't matter who won although I watched Graham Harrell play in high school and it was cool to see him engineer that last drive.  By the way, it's not nice to rub in our face that you are going on a cruise...I hope you gain 15 pounds.....so you will have to work it off when you return....LOL......just kidding....have a great time.

Yes, still biking to work. It was -5c when I left the house just before 7 a.m. I had on cycling shorts with tights overtop and winter weight tights over top of that. A fleece jacket and a running jacket plus a hat (underneath my helmet) and mitts. I had numerous flashing lights and a reflective vest - must've been quite a sight! My goal was to ride at least once in November to make it the longest cycle commute season ever. Looks like I will be able to stretch it out for a few more days too because it is supposed to be going up into the 15c-16c range tomorrow afternoon and for much of the rest of the week. Positively tropical!!

Off to Toronto later in the week for work. Hope to get to a tri store there that I found on the web. They're selling off their rental wetsuits. Hopefully can find one my size for use next year.

Have a look at my blog (www.petermcdrunning.blogspot.com) where I have embedded a youtube video about the "Blind Guys Tri Team" that I will be participating with.

My running class is going fine. Our "goal race" is on December 6th - the "Santa Shuffle" 5k - raising funds for the Salvation Army's Christmas programs. After that we are going to continue to meet though to lead into the January 1st "Resolution Run" 5k.

Got my garage and shed all cleaned out on the weekend - summer stuff stored away, winter stuff in the ready position - so that one of the cars could be parked inside. Slight complication though when I went to leave this morning I couldn't get my bike out without moving the car!!

Mav - awesome news on the Patriot HIM!!

Hey Turtles!

I am still here although getting fairly depressed! After all this hard work for the past 11 months and now my foot is healing very, very slowly! I am not doing anything but walking and swimming, but it doesn't seem to heal! It actually got worse over the weekend - I must have walked on it too much! I may go see a foot specialist later this week :^( ... I have put on about 6 pounds in just over 3 1/2 weeks, I haven't bowled in that entire time, I can't bike or run. This is depressing!!!! And I have my 30 year class reunion the end of November (part of the reason I wanted to look good :^) ... there are so many races my daughter wants to join (Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot, Lifetime Reindeer Run, etc.) and I want to join her, but can't!!!! (OK, enough whining!)

I was at the MSU/Wisconsin football game on Saturday. The ending was unbelievable! I have been going to State games for over 30 years and these are not the type of games that we ever seem to win. Wisconsin outplayed us for 3 1/2 quarters and deserved to win that game, but we stole it from them. Usually we are on the other side of those type of games!! I was very much excited!

Halloween was the NICEST weather I can ever remember. It was 70 during the day and in the evening I was in a T-Shirt the entire night giving out candy! It was wonderful. We had a lot of kids and a great neighborhood party. (Side note: we also pass out candy at work for all the employees. This has been a fun tradition we have done for many years. I gave out baby carrots packed in snack bags! Some of the employees LOVED it, some made fun of me and called me Scrooge. I thought it was perfect!).

Not much more to report. I will let you know what the Doc says about the foot.

Keep up the posting. I love to see the updates from everyone and keep on working out because I am jealous!

Although the electoral college vote wasn't close, I was surprised at how close the popular vote was (53% v. 47%).

Hi Dan! I am being nosy and jumping on threads today...So sorry to hear your boo boo from the Spooky Du isn't healing up for you! Get your fanny into the Doc and get it taken care of! I put off my periformus syndrome (pulled arse muscle clamping down on the sciatic nerve) doc visit WAY too long! I went into PT for 4 weeks, and am running and doing well. Don't get discouraged! Take care of you and it will all be good come next season.

As for your darling daughter...just be her biggest chearleader ever! She will still be running when your foot is healed, and she will be waiting to run with YOU, her biggest fan!

Take it easy (but not in the pool!) and take care!

Yippee - I now own a wetsuit !!

While I was in Toronto this week on business I was able to get to a great Tri store called Enduro Sports where they had their inventory of rental suits on sale. Got a Nineteen Pipeline full sleeve for $199 and it has not a mark on it. I'm within 2 lbs of the upper end of the weight range for the size I bought so better increase the workout intensity or risk not being able to squeeze into it come spring!!

Just home from a long week of meetings.   I am so glad to be home and read all the posts to catch up.

Dan - get to the doc and quit whining for crying out loud....in other words....SHUT UP AND SWIM

Trish - we are always glad to have a lurker....feel free to contribute anytime....but you will have a lot of reading to do to catch up on all the inside jokes...

Dan - I agree with Trish...you will heal and your daughter will still be running.  Taylour and I are going to run in Houston together....she's going to take Debbie's slot in the half marathon while I am running the full one....I am so proud of her!!!  She did an 8 mile run on Tuesday....her longest ever.

Mav - where are you?????

Here I am Bryan...I have been shopping for a tri bike today. Went to two tri shops outside Boston today...OOOOHHHHHH it was soooo much fun. I just am not sure. I liked the QR Sedusa...but its a little pricey. I also really liked the Kuto K factor...this bike can be done in custom colors...so I am thinking of some VERY VERY FAST color schemes. I plan on going back to test ride. This will be a long process. I need to buy a new pair of bike shoes as I currently use mountain bike shoes. This bike is an X Mas gift from my wonderful husband. I feel quite spoiled as some of these bikes are quite pricey...and certainly far better than what I ride. I do plan on improving.

I need to make a decision on a new gym this weekend. It is hard to leave my current gym but it no longer meets my needs. I think I am going to join a gym which I have an option to join the tri team with 3 USAT coaches. I'll keep you posted.

Dan you are swimming much longer which will only improve your times... being forced to swim...which I know is your favorite!!!! You will be so fast by the time your foot heals you will be starting in the front of the pack next season!!!!

Pete Congrats on your new wetsuit!!!! Shopping is my favorite sport.Sounds like a great deal...too bad its a little cold now to go for a test swim. I dont think there will be any probs for you fitting in it come spring with all of your running and biking

Heve a great weekend turtles!!!!!

I have the Santa Shuffle 5k on December 6th so we'll be over 50 by year's end.

Tomorrow, November 11th is Remembrance Day here in Canada. On the 11th day of the 11th month at the 11th hour (that's when WW1 ended) we honour the sacrifice of our war dead. It's a statutory holiday in most parts of the country, including here in New Brunswick, so that we have a chance to attend the ceremony at the cenotaph. Next to Christmas it is for me the most important public holiday of the year. From Nov 1st until the 11th we wear a poppy on our lapel as a symbol of Remembrance. Do you know the poem "In Flanders Fields"?

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep,
though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Buenos Dias Turtles!

Hard to go back to work after a nice vacation to the Mexican Riviera with my wife! It was so wonderful, you should all be jealous - LOL. Went snorkeling, biking, hiking, climbing, ate delicious food, met wonderful people and worked on the tan. I could really get used to that.

We walked each morning on the upper deck of the ship, and one morning I ran and rode the spin bike and did my core workout. But that's about it. Although we did swim (snorkeling was awesome!), ride bikes and hike when we were on shore. Great times.

Here's a pic in Mazatlan at a memorial to the Open-Air Taxi

open air taxi

Anyway, time to get back to work.

FBP, Thanks for the reminder about the veterans. We will remember them tomorrow as well. You don't happen to like that poem because it was penned by a fellow Canadian, do you? Good message there.

I'd love the poem no matter who had written it but of course extra special that it was penned by a Canadian (John McCrae, a Physician/Lieutenant in WW1).

Some trivia - the lines about "to you from failing hands ..." also famously appears in the dressing room of the Montreal Canadiens hockey tea. The dressing room is so famous that it is recreated at the Hockey Hall of Fame (which is in Toronto).

Great pic by the way!!

Ran today and it felt good. I've been going stir crazy without a physical outlet - some training program - I really miss it. I've been commuting on my bike when the weather allows, but that's about it. Anyway, I will try to be better about that. There is a road race on Saturday the 22nd which I will do as long as my IT band doesn't give me problems. Today was good.

I ran onboard the ship last week - they have a 'track' on the top deck - and was amazed at how much easier it is to run at 45 feet above sea level than it is at 4500 feet! Wow - I felt like I could just go and go. I've always heard about how much more oxygen your body gets at sea level, but never experienced it until now. I think for my next triathlon I'll look for something near the coast, you know, like Houston or Boston.

I have no place to swim now and I am feeling deprived. I didn't keep my gym membership - too expensive - and will likely get a membership for the family at the local rec center, but they don't have a pool. Actually, the high school has a pool there, but very limited lap swim hours. I didn't think that I would miss swimming, but I really do. Weird. I guess that I will have to bite the bullet and go to the high school between 5 and 6:30 am. Yawn!

Still looking for some tri's to do next year, but definitely will do more next season. It's too fun. If you don't drown.

You Turtles Rule!

We're getting slack on our postings. In my case probably matches slackness in my training. I did drag my butt out for a 7k run in the pouring rain this afternoon. First half felt fine. Last half was horrid.

I agree FBP....my excuse is that I have been "training" for this 13.1 mile catered training run tomorrow with 32000 of my closest friends....including my brother - he is really excited.  The expo today was amazing....biggest I have ever seen.  We had a light dinner tonight complete with a beer....I was hydrating...smile.

This is the inaugural Rock n Roll marathon in San Antonio....largest inaugural marathon supposedly ever....and after tomorrow, will be the largest marathon in Texas....I am VERY impressed with this organization...quite a marketing machine....last year the San Antonio marathon had 5000 runners....this year, 32000....now that is marketing.....

it is going to be 32-38 degrees F at the start tomorrow.....brr.....that's cold for a Texan....have a great Sunday....details later....
