Bcozican - 2011-07-18 10:30 AM They defended like a Rec team...both goals were embarrassing....since U9 you are told not to clear across the box...

I said this same thing on the first goal.  Defense 101 is to clear to the sides and she served that ball right up for the Japanese player.

And the PK that cleared the top of the goal by 10 feet......horrible.

Couldn't agree more with all of it.

On top of it, the offense missed how many attempts?  Including the shocker off the post?  Could have easily been 3-0 for US at half time.  Wondering if that played in their heads at all?

Bcozican - 2011-07-18 9:30 AM They defended like a Rec team...both goals were embarrassing....since U9 you are told not to clear across the box...then on the second they let a center back hit a 50 yard ball over the top for a 1 on 1 that they escape..but the resulting corner they dont defend the front post and concede.

They panicked when they were ahead each time...and not a single change from the coach until she brings on Heath....weird. Poor coaching and poor on field leadership.

Also thought that the advantage referenced on PK's was for Japan since they had seen them shoot once already was overstated....in 1999 DiCicco had Chastain hit hers with her left foot since the Chinese keeper had saved one of hers already...and changed his lineup....this time..same sequence except for Heath..and a predictable ending....just not a fan of this coach...

Glad a technically superior team won...my prediction is look out for France in the near future in the Women"s game

After defending Pia previously, she made one of the WORST MISTAKES you can make as a coach.  If it ain't broke, don't fix it.  I think Rapinoe should have been a starter from game one, BUT she wasn't, and it worked having her come in off the bench really well.  Keep it that way.  Why change it up when it's been working?

Also, Boxx missed her first PK against Brazil, to the exact same place.  She was lucky then that she got a retake, but she shouldn't have been taking one yesterday.  Also, no reason for Heath to be taking one at her young age without much experience.

VERY disappointing result.  No reason for that game to not have been put away early.  But kudos to Japan for capitalizing on our mistakes.  I do like watching Sawa, and called from day one that she would be the MVP.  I WILL be in Canada in 4 years to watch!

Was glad she actually hit the target....i called the Lloyd one..told my wife that the people behind the goal needed to pay attention...i think she had 6 or more shots in the game and failed to hit the target once!....they all focus on hitting it high in the game too...and not with direction/power...hence all the shots over etc...

And who's coaching?!....near post shots and not pull backs from a tight angle? They did it once and scored..they had at least 3 other chances to do the same.....

Yeah, that was bitter. As alluded to earlier, WTF was Buehler thinking clearing weakly across the face of goal? Total choke. That's going to take some getting over.

“We wanted to reward all the guys on the team, wanted to play everybody,” Schmid said.  “I think in retrospect that was a mistake."

Really, Sigi, you think so?! They were only down 1-nil at half, then the B-team was inserted.

We play them tomorrow.

Is it wrong that I didn't buy tickets because I do not want a single penny of my money to go to ManUre?  Cool

Yes, I can understand your boycott. I didn't get to make it to Seattle to see the carnage, glad I didn't. They did fill the place, though--over 67K in attendance. Hope your boys give a better showing for MLS than we did.

yeah.  Does nothing for the MLS image globally to get spanked like that.  Personally, I would love a win, but as long as they play close and well, that is all I care about.

This has been another interesting off season.  Lots of changes.  Wonder how it will shake out this year.

I didn't get to see the match, but nice to see Uruguay win it.  Looks like they dominated, from the highlights I've seen.

Did anyone watch it?

Nope....saw the goals....Your boy Suarez looks pretty good...when he stays upright!  I bet old Red nose is regretting letting Forlan go..he is turning out to be one of the better strikers in the world.

The "friendlies" have been interesting...Balotelli showing his true colors...and Warren Barton as a commentator is awful..he cannot stop himself from trying to differentiate the EPL players and their ability from the MLS players....frankly he is blinded by prejudice to his playing roots...the difference is not that great..if the MLS teams played with more confidence they may be able to get a result...in fact I think they have won one or two and tied etc....

Bring on the new season in Europe......

You know, with Suarez he stays up when he should probably go down and goes down when he should stay up.  There were quite a few games last year when he was dribbling around 3-4 players in the box and at any time he could have gone down and it would have been justified.  They were chipping at his ankles the entire time.  And then he turns around and is basically on a lone break away and is breathed on and he goes down.  SOOOO frustrates me.  I HATE that kind of play.

I would be willing to wager that most (definitely not all!) MLS teams would be able to stay up in the EPL.  Not compete for the top, mind you, but stay up in the top 17 (outside of relegation zone).  For a couple of years even, not just one or two.  No way to test this theory, but it is fun to talk about.

I don't think many of the MLS teams could stay up in the Premier league...one off games or a series of say 6 or 7...they would be competitive but struggle to gain a lot of wins...over a season...they would not survive...just my opinion

Changing subject...the referees in MLS are awful...I caught the end of the Rapids game and the PK was laughable...it happened in another game I watched too..these guys are not good...and the pace/ability of the players has exceeded the ability of the officials

I couldn't agree more about the MLS regs.  I will have to look it up to find the reference, but earlier in the season, their red-card rate was 10 times higher than the EPL.  They are aweful.  ABSOLUTELY aweful.  And it is across the board.  not just one or two, but ALL of them.  Some are just more awefull than others.

I'm wondering if ANYTHING will be done about it.

To be fair they were missing some players...and the Manure team was very strong..all internationals I believe BUT..if you are going to play Beckham and Henry all the time and a formation no one is familiar with then you are inviting trouble...and trouble accepted the invitation

The first goal was great, the second weak defending....as was the third...the deficiencies in the MLS team were the same ones as the USMNT....no world class defenders

On another note.

Bob Bradley has been dismissed as USMNT coach.

Clowns....so myopic about the state of the US game that they blame the Chef not the ingredients...
Should be interesting to see who they can lure into a job that has a high profile but lacks the quality to get the results the administrators want....it will take big money....

Yeah, I watched last night. Not pretty, but I guess not all that surprising for an All Star team against a very talented team that plays together all the time.

And very interesting about Bradley. I know that topic has been discussed extensively here. I'm optimistic that this will be for the better. Just out of curiosity I took the poll--71% said it was the right decision.

Maybe they will hire someone that will shine a light on the darkness that is the lack of development?

So now, of course, the talk leans to WHO will be the replacement?

I'll throw one obvious and one not so....

I think they will try to get Klinsman....they tried before so I think they will try again

My dark horse....Jason Kreis...success with RSL and seems to understand the US players etc

Not throwing stones at US teams since its also an issue in the EPL.....but Fans always vote for change when things are not going great....look at Arse fans crying for Wenger to go....stupid!

Is Jose a great coach or just a good one with great players and resources?...

Yeah, both of those were identified in another column I saw.  My concern with Jason is his lack of true international experience.  Yeah, he has 14 international caps, but none at the coaching level.

And Klinsman....well......maybe they will be more willing to give him what he wants now?  I don't know.  Again, I agree with you.  It is like pulling a soaked band aid off of a huge wound and putting another new one on.  It isn't going to stop what is wrong, just put a fancy cover over it for a while until it too is used up.  We need to deal with the huge wound first.

Supposedly, Claudio Reyna is working on revamping the developmental program.  Don't know WHAT that is, or what it looks like, but maybe something is happening.  Maybe.  I hope.
