rnihill - 2010-04-12 12:17 PM Here's a question I have today...  Do any of you HATE your bike helmet?

My helmet is not anything fancy.  It's a pretty basic, boring one that I got about 5 years ago (when I bought a bike so I could actually bike in my first tri I had signed up for).  At the time, I didn't want to spend a lot of $$ on a helmet since I wasn't sure I would even survive the tri, or if I did whether I would ever want to ride again.  I just wanted to protect my noggin.

Yesterday during my ride, I was reminded how much I LOVE riding outside but how much HATE my helmet.  It gives me a headache everytime I put it on.  The straps dig into my chin and by the time I get home I feel like it's choking me.

For those that may actually like your helmet, is there such a thing as a more comfortable helmet?  Or am I just a big cranky-pants who may never be happy with a helmet?  I'm at the point now where I don't mind spending some money on a helmet for increased comfort (and safety, obviously).  I just don't want to throw money away looking for something that may not exist...

I think I'm rambling...  Undecided

You deserve a comfortable helmet - go buy a new one   I have 2 giro's and like them both!  My road is a lot more comfortable than the mountain bike one - but I can hook my headlamp and flasher on the mtn bike one so that is worm quite a bit more!

Thank you!  I am happy to know that such a thing exists!

You probably just don't have a proper fitting helmet.  I'm not crazy about my racing helmet.  It's a Rudy Project helmet that I wasn't able to try on before I bought it online.  It fits OK but is a bit snug and irritates my forehead.  When my wife and I were at Target buying her a bike and a helmet, I decided to try on an inexpensive Schwinn helmet and guess what... it's much more comfortable than the other one.  It might not be as aero as my racing helmet, but I think I may start using it all the time... even in races.

Me too!  I don't really like mine, either, but I'll probably continue to use it unless it gets really annoying (I think mine is too big and kind of slides around on my head.

As far as helmets...I think the fit test is that it should be able to go on snug and comfortable without using the chin strap.  If you tilt your head and shake it...the helmet shouldn't move.  But shouldn't be so tight that it gives you a headache.

For all the miles we ride...I think paying a little extra for a comfortable helmet is worth it.

Thanks, guys.  I may go the LBS next to work and see if I can try on some helmets...  Maybe I'll even bring the one I have now so I can compare.  I know the guys over there are pretty good.  I bought my old bike and helmet from another bike store...  I just remember taking the first helmet the kid gave me.  At that point, I hadn't been on a bike in 15 years - before you even HAD to wear a helmet.   I wouldn't have known a good fit from a bad fit.   Surprised

This makes me think, in fact, that  my helmet may be too small.  I don't feel like I can even get it on my head snug and comfortable without squeezing it in.  For a short person, I do have a big head...  Smile

Flat 2 days in a row - Are tubeless going to help that much????  This is pathetic!

Tubeless tires are suppose to have an additional layer on the inside of the tire that helps seal small punctures.  That's why they weigh a little more than a standard folding tire.  You could also use Stan's no leak, but then you're adding more rotation mass to your tires.

What's causing all the flats?  Goat heads?

Yeah...it shouldn't be that tight...it should be just as easy, if not easier than putting on a baseball hat.  Most helmets also come with a dial on the back that allows you to adjuts the fit.  So while there still are different sizes of helmets...the dial should make it so that it fits perfect.

Nah pine branches and the crap this early in the spring.  I could not believe it yesterday.  Saturday it was slow so I milked it home - yesterday was an all out change

Don't take this the wrong way, but you are making sure whatever is causing the flat is out of the inside of the tire?  In other words, you are running your hand around the inside of the tire before putting the new tube on, right?

Oh yeah - no worries.  One was a slow leaker from glass I think and then the other was a lot of trail riding but this early it is just all branches and crap from the winter.  I am probably one of the first ones out there riding.  But if I get one tonight - Something is amiss

Stay away from those goat heads!

I'm off to softball practice, so good night to all.  My goal is to get a run and a bike in tomorrow.  I need to get out of this funk I'm in, so I'll try to sweat it out.  BLAH! Yell

Also, I forgot to update the spreadsheet, but will try to do that tonight if this fog in my brain lifts and I'm able to remember.

Have a great day everyone.  See you tomorrow!

Bill, I am sorry yet so happy for you! Like I said in the thread, I look forward to what this brings!
