I picked up my new wheels today with a powertap! Hed and Cycleop sponsors the team I'm on and cut me an incredible discount. I had to take advantage of it. I'll have to take some pics after I put some tires on them and mount them up!
Please hurry with the pics! I know I do not ride nearly well enough to deserve them, but I absolutely love the looks of them! You have to get the aero helmet now. I was just reading that they actually will give you more of an advantage than the wheels. Both of them combined will be incredible.... better pics may be a while. I got all set up on the patio to take pics and grabbed the camera. Battery was dead! LOL I have no idea where Anne has the charger or other batteries right now. the camera phone will have to do (newwheelsP4[2].JPG) Attachments ---------------- newwheelsP4[2].JPG (63KB - 10 downloads) |

Veteran 318 Minneapolis | Subject: RE: Meulen's 'Let's tri this Thing!' beginner mentor group-CLOSED I just have to say this is the BEST mentor group EVER and we should really stay a team forever and ever. The End. Yesterday's QOTD: Ummm...I'm pretty embarrassed that I haven't been training long enough to have anything embarrassing happen yet! LOLOL But seriously, give it 23 more days and I'll have a story or two, I'm sure. Actually, I'm just pretty cautious...I've never attended a public, indoor, yoga class cos I KNOW I would fart in it. I haven't yet ridden my bike over 22 mph because I'll wipe out. I haven't yet practiced my transitions outdoors in my trisuit because...well...it's my trisuit! LOL No, actually it's cos the weather refuses to freaking cooperate! This weekend it's going to snow again! MEGA FROWNY FACE I did go over the handlebars once but it wasn't in training. I was just commuting from one job to another and I was late. I was riding a hybrid (road/mtn bike/city thing - heavy) and I had my U-Lock slung around the top bar. It was hanging weird and instead of using my hand to adjust it, genius that I am I decided to kick it with my foot. Well, my foot went through the spokes of my front wheel BEHIND the fork. I'm sure you can all only imagine exactly how fast that bike stopped moving. So fast in fact that I never let go of the handlebars. I landed in the middle of the street on my back with the bike on top of me! OMG Luckily it was a back street and there was no traffic. I sort of dragged myself and my bike to the curb and inspected the damages. The front brakes were sort of jammed through the wheel and it wouldn't turn. I had to drag that bike, with my leg and arm bleeding, the 10 or 12 blocks to work. I walked in, told them I was going home, and walked out. Lesson? Don't randomly kick at things with your feet while riding! |

Veteran 318 Minneapolis | Subject: RE: Meulen's 'Let's tri this Thing!' beginner mentor group-CLOSED Fancy wheels Brian! Okay, my QOTD: what's the best trainer in terms of quality meets affordability? Once I bought one of those old trainers where the wheel just sits on rollers and it sucked and was really loud!!! Living in MN I will need an indoor trainer for next winter but I can't spend a billion $$$. |

Elite 3515 Romeoville, Il | Subject: RE: Meulen's 'Let's tri this Thing!' beginner mentor group-CLOSED For reliability, quietness and value I would stick to either the Kurt Kinetic Road Machine or the comparible cycleops fluid trainer. I waited and waited for a deal picked up mine with a mat, riser, and power computer for $270 shipped to my door. You can still hear it but not that bad. Anne has to turn up the tv a little if I'm using it in the living room. If you have it on a mat though I doubt you would hear it in the apartment below you. |

Veteran 283 | Subject: RE: Meulen's 'Let's tri this Thing!' beginner mentor group-CLOSED I have borrowed a Travel Trac and I have been happy with it. I don't think that it is really that loud, and it has worked fine enough. Truth is, of course, that I have never used another one and know nothing about them. I do know, however, that Performance Bike has huge sales on them throughout the entire winter. You might even find them cheap now as the outdoor season is in effect. I would get daily emails from them announcing deals up to $150 off of all trainers.
As for my embarrassing moments while training, I haven't had any yet. I have had some close calls, such as almost taking my new bike directly into the Allegheny River last night. That would have been bad. However, as Erin has "hinted" I am definitely no stranger to accidents and getting hurt. A couple of years ago, I slipped on our steps, fell down them with my knee bent behind me, and hit the landing so hard that I shattered the glass on the front door. I couldn't move, but looked up to see my entire family laughing at me. I also now have a 3 inch screw in my foot as a result of playing in a student-teacher basketball game with 8th graders. This list could go on, and on, and on....
Brian - That is true bike porn! Even if they didn't make you go faster, they are so pretty to look at |

Elite 3515 Romeoville, Il | Subject: RE: Meulen's 'Let's tri this Thing!' beginner mentor group-CLOSED Michael, don't let anyone tell you that you can't buy a little speed! It won't make a huge difference, however, it doesn't take a huge amount of difference to multiply over a long course. I really don't know why people say you can't buy speed. They are right that the focus should be on the engine because you can't do anything without it. But personally, I'll buy as much speed as I can afford!, but I'd do this sport on a tricycle if I had to!! I'm really blessed to do the things I do. I don't want to forget that! So I'm going to train my a$$ off to hopefully someday be worthy of that bike. In the meantime I'm going to enjoy every second of it! |

Please don't take me the wrong way because I agree with you completely. I know that they will definitely add speed to your time, and I would buy them if I could! The engine is very important, but that engine has to be put in the right vehicle. After buying my road bike this year, I have already added several mph to my speed because of the bike, and the aero bars added a couple more. If I could add the wheels and the helmet, plus some extra carbon, then I would really be flying. It's like looking at a great sports car - it has the ability to go fast as hell, and it looks incredible! |

Main reason was because they were CHEAP! Hed has a sponsorship deal through my team and cut me a fantastic deal. They are also the new C2 rim, which is wider. Wider is where everyone is moving too now. This is the latest and greatest after the original toridial design's patent expired. I've always considered Hed and Zipp the 2 best wheelmakers out there on the cutting edge. I was just happy my team had a deal with them. I went with the jet9's after consulting the people at Hed. After giving them my height/weight/avg speeds/typical elevation profile/terrain/bike handling experience they recommended the jet 9's. What you see in the pic is a Jet6, which I got for extra windy days that would make the 9's a little less handleable. So yes, I got 3 wheels! My team also has a deal with Saris. So I scored the Powertap SL+ on the cheap too. I ordered that first and sent it too Hed. They built the wheels for me on the powertap. They also made a mistake and gave me ceramic bearing hubs, which I didn't pay for! Edited by Meulen 2011-04-15 4:00 PM |

Elite 3515 Romeoville, Il | Subject: RE: Meulen's 'Let's tri this Thing!' beginner mentor group-CLOSED Michael A powertap reads the force you putting out to the bikes drivetrain in watts. It's really the most tangible way to train. With the powermeter, you can calculate exactly how much power you put out for 1/2 hour. Then design workouts around that number and measure tangible improvement. It's really just an expensive training tool. It's how the pros train. Richard I joined the cycling team xXx Athletico Racing. It's a Chicago based team. I paid my dues, where my kit with all the sponsors logos on it at races and the team reps have negotiated some killer discounts for us with sponsors. |
