Mike, checked out the virtual 5k.  May do it.

Okay folks, time to post!  For those who haven't posted your 2012 goals time to do it now.

As for new members for some reason my thread never moved over and trying to find out why from Ron.  Hopefully he will open it up and we can get a few new members.

Hello to all ... don't know about the group but 2012 started off really sweet for me.  Weather could not have been any nicer ... mid 60's, sunshine ... absolutely gorgeous over the weekend.  Got in a nice recovery ride on Sunday - 25 miles w/ just under a 16mph pace.   Hit the gym this afternoon and got in a nice brick ... 1mile swim and 1.6m run on the treadmill.

Also did some tweaking on my bike this week via changing out the rear cassette to an 11x28 gear set ... much better for me on the steep hills; especially on hills with a looong pull.  My current setup is a standard crank (50x39) with this new 11x28.  I stayed in the big chain ring throughout the 25m ride and only a couple of times ran the HR up to the edge of threshold ... not too bad.  I still like having the 11 toothed gear for the flats and downhill grades, but the top 2 gears (24 and 28) really add some 'granny' gear for climbing.

Goals for 2012:

  1. Log in >250m running for the year
  2. Record a sub-10 minute - mile run pace in at least one event
  3. Record at least one ≥ 20mph bike pace in an event
  4. Log in > 75miles swimming for the year
  5. Log in > 3000 miles biking for the year
  6. Compete in my first Oly or International length event (International planned for September)
  7. Be smarter with training and racing; i.e. increase distance and pace in small increments and minimize strains and/or  injury
  8. Promote and encourage the sport ... inspire at least 1 noob to compete in an event

1. Weigh 150 pounds by May 20th. (currently 160)

2. Go sub-6 at Door County half iron July 22nd (went 5:11 at NOLA 69.1 and I'm a slow swimmer)

3. Reduce clutter around the house and garage

4. Go sub 1:45 (current PR is 1:55) at RnR half marathon St. Louis October 21st.  This one is a real stretch

Great start to the new year Dorm.

Dh and I did a 5k resolution  fun run. I can't say there was a whole lot fun about it- lol. It was 8am Sunday Morning. I did run the entire distance though which was very exciting for me. I have never run for an entire 5k. And my time was actually a min/mi faster than my previous fastest time. So I'm guessing my training is paying off. Of course I was still turtle slow but given my heart condition, I'm thrilled with the improvements.

And dh did win me a t-shirt that I liked so I guess I had more fun than I realized- haha.

Happy New Years, everyone!  I'm finally back at work and back on a real computer.  I need to get a keyboard for my ipad at home.

My new goals:  run 1000 miles, complete a HIM and still have fun during training.  I'm not listing any races other than the HIM because we just bought a whitewater raft and I"m planning on spending most of my free weekends on the river.

I started the year off with a very painful run after too many cranberry-ginger martinis and then went for another run yesterday.  Today I got up early to ride the trainer and realized that I had a leak - i pumped it up once, it promptly went flat, and so I went back to bed.  I have no patience in the morning for equipment issues.  So today instead of swimming (yes, I was finally going to get back in the water) I'm going to spin class.  Bummer.  But my biking sucks and my swimming doesnt.

Also, I just got off the waitlist for a 20 mile trail run on January 21. I wasnt expecting to get in so my longest run in the last few weeks was 12 miles.  Do you think that I can pull it off?  Its supposed to be pretty brutal.  I'm leaning towards not doing it but I really really really wanted to.  I just dont want to get injured.

I wouldn't risk an injury if you think that is a real possibility.

I would have gone back to bed if I had a flat tire too.

Elizabeth - I am with Mike, don't do the race if you are not ready.  Raft sounds fun, enjoy.

Shelley - congrats on the 5k!

Went for a swim today and did a little speedwork trying to get myself ready to rejoin Masters.

Thanks for the advice all.  I've decided that I"m not going to do the race in January.  I just having been running far enough recently - I know that I can gut it out and finish but I'm not going to have much fun doing it so I'm going to do it next year instead.

Today I'm heading to the pool for the first time since July.  Its going to be rough.

Fit - I missed one goal which was to do one race with you so start training!  Sugarmill sprint in Oct (7th) is supposed to be a great race and not to far (Lafayette).

Training started Gary. And October is probably doable as I need the entire summer in the pool- lol.

And I am planning on being back at Ironman 70.3 in New Orleans as a volunteer again. Not exactly doing the race with you but I will be there- haha.

Probably a good idea to skip the January race. There's a whole year to find more and no sense getting hurt if you aren't prepared.

Hope the swim goes better than you think. I've got to get my buttocks in the pool but it's so hard because the one I have access to is outdoors. It's supposedly heated but I swear that the club owner is lying about that- It is %$##^%$$ COLD. I go to water aerobics with the intention of staying to swim laps but I'm always frozen and can't wait to get out by the end of class. I stayed and did laps twice since October. Might need to buy a wetsuit just for the pool- lol.

Elizabeth - hope the swim went better than expected

Shelly  - very cool I will see you in April and hopefully in Oct!  Bummer about the pool but maybe swim first then aerobics?  I know my pool is a bit cold but once I start swimming I heat up pretty quickly.  Now the dash from the pool to the locker room is usually a bit nippy.

Back on the bike tonight hoping I have a better ride.  Lately just no juice in the legs.  Ordered some new Asics 2160's as my 2150's are nearing end of life.  Did I mention I preordered a Garmin 910xt?  Probably won't get it until Feb but very excited cause I can swim in the pool with it.  Interesting to see how it handles my stroke.

Woo hoo on the 910xt. I have ulterior motives for being so happy for you- I too have one preorderd but have no clue how to work the thing. I've never had a HRM GPS watch of any type before so I'm a little scared of the thing- lol. I may be picking your brain extensively on using it- lol. I've started watching some tutorials but it's hard not having anything to practice with. Santa did bring dh the 310 and he's gotten pretty decent with it so I'm hoping he'll be able to help as well. I can't wait for mine to come in. I'm thinking most likely March though. I hope I'm wrong.

Howdy all ... pretty normal around here.  I'm at the gym tonight for a spin - run session.  Ordered another Garmin 305 and it should get here today or tomorrow.  The last time I went mountain biking I went OVER the bars and once I got up and settled I realized the Garmin was gone and after 15 minutes of searching it was nowhere to be found.

Have to drop off the skis at the local ski shop for tuning ... headed out to  Big Sky, Montana in a couple of weeks for first ski trip of the year

Hey Gang.

New Year's resolution - Stay on training plan - complete 70.3 under 6---swim a pool lap under 2:20 consistently (don't laugh Gary 1.20 speed boat)  spend more time with the family.

So far..not getting there.  I have been sick for over a week with some kind of flu.  I have been training but with very low intensity.  I have Dr appt tommorrow to get some antibotics***which I normally avoid.

@Dorm.  I starting to get jeoulus.  Your getting to do all things I that I have on my bucket list.  Congrats!  Have fun.

Did get a swim coach.  We meet next week.  I will let you know how that goes.

Dorm -  Congrats on the new Garmin.  I just sent mine in to be replaced/fixed - I had a similar mountain biking accident.  I didnt lose the Garmin but shattered the face of it.

And have fun on your ski trip!  They havent even opened the mountain here yet (20 min up the hill) and I dont think they're going to - its going to be in the mid-forties again today.  I was actually just taking to my husband about heading over to Big Sky or Targhee for a couple of days.

Tracy - Hope you feel better soon.  Which 70.3 are you doing?  My stretch goal is to also break 6 hours at Boise but since I've never done one I have no idea how long it will actually take.

I got up early this morning to run and went about 4 miles - I wanted to go further but then I got too much in my prosecutor-mind and started thinking about horrible things and freaked out and came home.  I love my job but sometimes I wish I didnt know so much about the truly scary people in the world.  I need to find some early morning running partners.

All, on the lost Garmin ... I was wearing the velcro strap wristband with the quick release mount in lieu of the usual buckle type band.  And this was not the first time it'd fallen off, so if you have this type wrist band - be careful or be prepared to lose it at some point - grrrr.

Tracy ... I'm jealous that you've scored a coach.  Having someone watch you swim from topside and they know what they're looking at will help your technique immensely.  Good job on securing this!

Just a side note on the skiing ... I actually took up Tri sports in 2009 to help me be a better skier.  Skiing was my passion for many, many, many years - wherein my wife would say "when I wasn't skiing - the only thing I thought about was when and where the next time would be" .  It's funny, in that after a years worth of Tri sports, the lure of skiing has faded and Tri sports have taken a higher priority.  There are a lot of things I love between the sports ... the wind in your face, the smells, the quietness of snow falling, that feeling you get when you're peddling really hard on a flat road and it feels effortless - even though it's not.

Dorm - bummer about the garmin but have fun on the ski trip!

Tracy - bummer about the cold.  As for the 1:20 that is a huge stretch goal for me.  Right now I am more of a tug boat in the water.  Good luck with the coach!

Elizabeth - Ouch, maybe run with music until you can find a running partner?  Many years ago I worked on a child abuse reporting system.  Always avoided seing production data as when I did it would make me sick to my stomach.

Trainer ride last night, swam today at lunch and will run tonight.

One question, has everyone updated the group calendar?

Our mentor group thread (to recruit new members) just opened up.  Please expect new folks to join and welcome them!  For the new folks, please post an introduction of yourself.

I agree. The only part I question is having a good kick. I have a great kick and know that it really helps me in the swim. And I do not think it hurts my bike and run. My bike and run abilities (or lack of) affect my bike and run.
