Hey Billy,  I signed up for Musselman in the Finger Lakes up in NY.  Small venue, nice reviews.  I heard the bike course is pristine from a friend who did as training for IM in Florida.  Can't think of the city right now.

Just got home from hot yoga.  The muscles are recovering from TRX.  Early this afternoon I went on the spin bike for 40 minutes, alone, in the spin room.  Just wanted to loosen up the legs a bit.  It was brutal.  I did what I call intervals.  1 minute hard, 1 minute light resistance at 90-95 cadence to recover.  Hard was standing  trying to "run" at 85-90 or seated climb  80-85.  I don't think it was the right call.  A longer, high cadence low resistance probably would have served me better.  Trial and error.  Sometimes I had to recover for 2 minutes.

Amy, yoga on a rest day sounds like a good plan.  Unfortunately my "rest" days are usually 16 hour work days.  I'll have to see if I can work that in.

Pat, I will def check out the run course.  I know the bike course has its challenges.  My run is quite pathetic, so running a few hills once week will hopefully streghthen me for flats and some rolling hills??

KTC, I think working in yoga is a good protective investment.  It's so hard to do tho.  I'd rather do a 10 mile run, then yoga, and my 10 mile run is at least 2 hours long.

That's all for now.  Thanks for all the responses so far!!  And this is off season.

Did my first TRX class this morning.  WOW. I hit muscle fibers that have been asleep for a long time!  THis goes along with my committment to strength and flexibiliy training in the off season.  I have been trying to do strength 2x per week and yoga 1-2 x per week.  Swimming, running and biking once per week.  Is this crazy?  My HIM training starts up in late Feb or early March I think.  A 20 week program.  I hope I can keep strength and yoga 1x per week during training.  any thoughts veterans??  My run has been including some tough hills, with about 5 plus miles per outing.  Historically, I've only done running on flats.

Hope all are well!!

I would never call myself an "expert" but if you can look at the run course/profile for your HIM, I would lean toward finding some terrain which is similar... meaning, if it is 90% flat, all those hills this early might be a bit risky...but what do I know? I don't call myself a runner, either! -- and i have witnesses.

I can testify as I have witnessed Pat running.  So he calls it.  None the less, it was a beautiful thing.

x2 on the hills, be careful .  It is easier than you think to overuse and abuse hill training.

I am like you Ann, I would rather run 10 miles then do a 60 minute Yoga class.  Part of my problem is staying focus on what I am doing and not letting my mind wander.  Most of the time I keep looking at the clock thinking how much longer do I have left.

This weekend I am attending a triathlon clinic.  They are going to video tape us swimming, biking and running.  I really just want to attend the swim part, however I figure it wouldn't hurt to see me in the other events as well.  Who knows maybe I will learn something.

Hey Patrick as I recall Mark wasn't exactly tripping the lights fantastic with a gazelle like prance either.

Haha - you all rock. Now go train.

New peeps not here yet but coming soon. I have had a wild two weeks but did run a half last Sunday in Dallas. The Texas half - great day on a new course. I love the number of races in DFW.

Another finish line... or 3. This past weekend, I "ran" the Run For Chocolate 15K in Dallas. My daughter and her new husband participated in the 5K, the first sports event for either of them. Since the 5K started (and finished) before I even started the 15K, Amanda, my usual SAG driver for my centuries, was there to meet me at the finish line and run across with me, so it was a very special moment for us to share.

And as documented previously, I am not a runner, but for the first time, on any run longer than a 5K, my finish time was under 12:00/mile average. Who knows, maybe next time under 11:30. I will take that.

Thanks, Ann. I am just really happy that the two of them are inspired to not become couch potatoes! And with her having fibromyalgia, it is especially meaningful to see her becoming more active.

I still owe you 4 finish lines from this weekend.  My 2 kids (10-12) and I did a 5K at their school and I ran the St Pete R&R half marathon again Sunday.  PR'd by 6 minutes!

Pat - How wonderful to see your daughter and her husband out running!  Congratulations on your fast run.    I see a 11:30 pace in your future.

Pam - Another person getting her family involved.  Great job!

Don't know if these count but my husband has ran 2 5k's this year.  In fact he came in 3rd overall on the last run.  Let's just say that you just needed 2 hands to count the number of participants in that race.  I am just happy to see him out running regardless how fast or slow he goes.

Way to go Pam and KTC!!  Way to get the family involved.  I'm still wroking on that and failing miserably.  My husband did start running last summer but has no interest in "racing"  Not that I really race, I just 'do my best'  He has stopped running but I am hopeful for the spring.

Hey Pat, let's go for that 11:30 pace!!!

Happy Valentine's Day!!

ann

My 20 wks HIM training program starts this Sunday!!

I am using the website's program with a run emphasis.  Has anyone used their program?

I have some questions.  The early weeks have low bike mileage.  Would you recommend foregoing the bike work out for a longer spin class workout?   (Which I have been doing in off season) Or get on the dreaded trainer with my bike and do what they say??

Thanks for any help!!

You will do wonderful Ann!  Can't wait to hear all your training adventures during this 20 weeks.

I am not familiar with the workout program you are referring to and some of those workout programs are taking someone who has never workout before and starting them on a program.  I would say to still keep a bike workout in and trade one bike workout out for a spin class in the beginning.  Part of this is also getting you use to sitting on your bike for a long period of time.  So let's say they have you doing 2 bike workouts do one on the bike and one spin class.  If they only have you doing 1 bike workout a week then alternate.  In other words go with what makes you happy and will keep you engaged.  How do you like my answers?  Laughing

Go Ann!!!  It will be fun to watch your progress over the next 20 weeks.

Things have been busy for me.  I can now officially teach yoga and I am certified as a run coach through the Road Runner's Club of America.  I also FINALLY got accepted into the USAT coaching clinic, so I'll be doing that in May.  Lots of studying and not much racing for me right now, but I knew that coming into 2013 and I'm ok with it.

I will be doing the Texas Independence Relay in March, so that should be fun.

Nice wheels!

I did not get new wheels but a garmin 910XT!

Brianna, happy for you you are getting closer to your coaching dreams, nice!

Enjoy the training Ann, I have a few more months before my IM real training starts.  Kept busy with local tri camps and enjoying those, although I seem to be skipping most of the swimming...
