crews - 2010-10-01 12:24 AM I may need to be a part of this Super Turtle group.  Do I qualify if I rund a 15-16 minute mile?  If I "sprint," I can do 13 minute miles

*looking doubtful*

I dunno, that's kinda fast. Even for us Super Turtles.

We have everyone from walkers to IM dudes who go at 9-10min/mi. Turtlehood--it's an attitude.

Yanti,

it was kind of an internet wandering to the Manatee T-shirt.  Facebook was telling me to look at this cartoonist's merchandise...he does pugs so Facebook thought he and I would get along.  So, in a moment of weakness I clicked and his pug stuff IS cute, but then there's this Manatee thing...

Lynn,

Obviously RH heard my IT band was getting better and was starting to worry about me "chicking" him.  Ya.  I am sure that's what happened.  Actually DH and I had a funny convo about this...with DH sort of scandalized...well, why doesn't he just HTFU and run the marathon, what's wrong with him?  And I'm trying to explain (not sure successfully) that as a professional runner he doesn't necessarily want to go out and gut out a race (like one of us intrepid AG'ers).  It could hurt him in the long run to have a bad performance.  I don't think Chris is buying it.

Oh no! The pic didn't come through! But ... you'll never believe this ...

The black one in my photo is Gladys, too!!!

The Three Pugs (and there is a winery ON the Vineman 70.3 / Barb's / full course named that, btw) are officially the children of a high-power Hollywood couple--probably THE most powerful couple in Hollywood.

I was pug nanny! I would come and walk and feed them twice a day if the couple were in town, and if not, I lived at the house with them (and with this couple's travel schedule, that averaged to 1/3 of the time).

Anyhow, I fell in love with pugs in general, and these guys were truly my babies for several years.

I miss them, and their people. There are sooooo many stories. I must e-mail those guys ... I'm so glad you reminded me.

Very well pugged indeed! (The one of Colonel on Gladys makes COMPLETE sense.)

(You are familiar with the expression "pugly" right?)

Okay, one more, just one more, I promise, for a lookalike to Q's shots ... here's Gladys and Boris.

P.S. I understood why pugs lie the way they do when my friend noted, "It's hard to bend a beach ball." HA!

THE most powerful couple in Hollywood have a dog named Gladys?  I wonder how their seven million kids feel about the dog having the only normal name out of the entire litter.

Any idea what month it might have been in? All I can think of is to check my inspires. I looked in my private messages but it wasn't in there. I'll try...you know I'll try.

I bet it was in the thread of whatever Manatee season it was -- probably the one that started in December. Maybe two months out? I'd hate for you (and, specifically, for me, I'm terrible!) to look through a whole manatee thread.

Hmmm ...

Okay, Yanti -- just perused the other Manatee site and here's what I found re: Oceanside 70.3

For Oceanside? As soon as you can tolerate the temperature, frankly. If it's a major hardship for you to get the OWS in, then three (minimum) before the race. I know I'm just guessing here, but this is based on my own swim training in essentially the same waters and then having done that race. The swim is deceptive. It's COLD and you do not get a chance to get used to the water or warm up. The more you can get your body used to getting into cold water and going, the better.

And on that short loop that's outside the harbor, you may get major swells. (Or not. But better to be prepared for a moving sea).

Here are some tips for Oceanside--I'll add more if I think of them!

- wear SOCKS on your hands while waiting in line for the swim and bring OLD SHOES to wear covering your feet. You can discard the items on the boat ramp before you go in. You will be grateful for this tip above all others.
- stay on the OUTSIDE during the swim. If you're not Front of Pack, no matter how fast you are, you will be fighting for space.
- step ONLY on the RED CARPET when you exit the swim. Do NOT step on any exposed part of the boat ramp.
- go MUCH slower than you think you need to on the first half of the bike. If you get into the hills and THEN feel like hammering, go nuts. Besides, there's always 13.1 left if you have lots of energy remaining
- If they have the sand part of the run this year, it may add up to a full mile of running on sand. You may want to occasionally take a short part of a run on sand to build up the ankle stability and get used to the feeling.

FWIW -- They did change the course this year and there's NO running on sand at all!

I think many of you are on to my secret by now.  Allison and I are actually the same person...

Haha, I REALLY enjoyed pacing A...it was a good exercise for me to think about how to help another person perform, instead of just trying to pass them and giving them the road runner salute...sort of a running version of when the grinch's black little heart grows 3 sizes.  Anyone else want a pacer???

When in the throes of I want to quit!! Here's a quote for you Manatees -- listening Q-- marathon woman --

"The body does not want you to do this. As you run, it tells you to stop but the mind must be strong. You always go too far for your body. You must handle the pain with strategy... It is not age; it is not diet. It is the will to succeed."

Jacqueline Gareau, 1980 Boston Marathon champ

Help me Manatees.

This taper thing is not going well.  I was not too antsy or mentally freaked out but my body is in full rebellion.  Saturday night my back went into spasm, but I took some ibuprofen and running with Allison on Sunday helped.  Sometime on Monday my neck and back went super stiff and I can barely move my head to the left or forward without pain.  I keep taking ibuprofen and thinking it will get better...felt a bit better yesterday but woke up this morning (way before the alarm, and I NEED sleep right now) in excruciating pain.

So I said mentally I am ok, but I NOW am about ready to lose it from the stress of the pain.  Tapering is supposed to help your body recover.  I wanted to avoid massage as I often get sick after a full body massage (I don't do them often and I think they release too many toxins into my body).  But I went ahead and got one scheduled...I just hope it doesn't make everything worse.  I don't know what to do.  I can't believe the Marathon is 4 days away and I am in such distress.  I can't see how I'll feel better by Sunday.

W.T.F?!?!?!?

Okay--random weird pains during taper is perfectly normal but waking up in exc-pain is not.

Where exactly is the pain? is it constant, or knifing, burning, throbbing etc?

Please give as much detail as you possibly can, por favor.

Make sure the massage is long flushing strokes, NOT deep kneading ones. Drink TONS of water.

Does ice help?
