JG_GreenCoast - 2011-02-20 12:21 PM I really can't seem to get it right.  Have had such a bad month...today, finally feeling good and ready to go for a long run I turned my ankle over a tree root .75 mi in to 12 planned and am at home icing and elevating it.  I really hope I can hammer my training next week.  This has been so infuriating!

I had trouble like you are experiencing in the fall. November I had the flu, then a cold then I started to feel better and in December I turned my ankle too.  I was just running along on a neighborhood road I always run on and all the sudden I'm on the ground.  I wore an ankle compression wrap after I iced and that really helped a lot. You can pick one up at a local drugstore for 10 or 15 bucks.
Concentrate on the positive like your totally AWESOME 1/2 marathon!

Great suggestion! I just happened to have one lying around so just threw it on...really didn't think of it so thank you!

I do need to focus on positive.  It becomes tough because exercise really is what makes me feel good and my mind healthy at all.  I am thrilled about that HM and I know it is so stupid but i just want everything to go perfect so I can keep exercising!  Hoping its better tomorrow!

You are not alone in feeling like exercise keeps you sane. We get addicted in a way, in that our brain is used to the positive effects of exercise and we get really grump and cranky without it. We are all just self-medicating ourselves!

arkmann - 2011-02-21 12:32 AM Well since I'm still anonymous here...  I had a nasty spill today on the bike.  I was going slow on the bike route today when i clipped the chicken fence with the intersecting spokes on the top.  It left two big gashes on me, one on the neck and one on the chin.  Paramedics had to be called.  I had a tota of 17 stitches (10+7).  I'm probably gonna pass on the Desert  Triathlon International (3/6) and concentrate on the HIM on 4/17.  It was a sucky day but it's a good thing it didn't bled to much and there's no pain whatsoever.  I'll see how it feels in 3 days then I'll see if I can train.  I've been training for it since November (20 week plan) but safety is my utmost priority.

Yes, I am stubborn but I won't hit the water in 2 weeks but I will definitely hit the road (walk/jog) and the trainer (spinning) for sure.

My first question to the paramedic was, "When can I start training again?"  It was welcomed by a good chuckle and the statement, "You triathletes are a different breed."

Oh crud!!!  Wow!  Glad there is no pain...it hurts me just reading about it!  Loved your question to the medics and their response.  haha.  Keep your spirits up.  You will be healed and back out there before you know it.

Got the 25min run +2hr bike+25min run workout in that I skipped yesterday.  YAY!!    That was a mental hump for me.  Gotta say, though.  After 3 hours with myself...I am kind of sick of me. haha

Swam 1500 of my scheduled 3000 today.  Ankle definitely didn't feel good when i tried to kick with both and the swimming just felt a bit uneven and not so great.  I have such a heavy week of training and am worried because I've had such a lazy few weeks, and am swamped for work and still have a very tender ankle.  This is peak hours and I already am sucking.

I think to just set a precedent I'm going to go get my other 1500yds in even gimpy tonight.   I don't want to keep skipping workouts.  I have been so stressed from work and school and just want to hammer out 15 injury free hours this week and feel like i'm back in shape.  But, I don't think it's gonna happen

Have you thought about doing some sets with a pull bouy to take some of the pressure off your ankle?

Good for you for going back to get it done. Skipping workouts isn't a good thing to get in the habit of doing. I'm still a bit gimpy from my hammy tendon and have taken a full week off from running. Been walking instead, but am fearful that if I go much longer, my endurance will start to be compromised. Hope the ankle feels better soon!

I agree with Steve.  Use the pull buoy.  When I had a bum ankle I swam with a neoprene brace on it and did half of my workout as arms only.

Funny...I actually thought of doing that about 1000 yds in to my second 1500 set.  I should have.  I used to have a serious addiction to the pull buoy so I kind of just walk right past them  This is the first day in like a week that I have done exactly what's on the plan!

I have just started this plan!  How do I "join" the group?  I am a 6-0, 170 a Firefighter and this will be my first HIM.  I would like to do a Full next year I am doing these races for a group called Supporting Hero's they collect doantions to give surviving familes of Police, Fire, and EMS line of Duty deaths.  They are not sponsoring me I am doing it all on my own just getting their name out there.

This is my third season of Multi Sport mostly Sprint Distance Triathlons a few duo's and quite a few running events 5K's 10K's mostly 1 Mini Marathon so I am looking forward to this distance.

I usually forget how to get back to these groups so if I don't find you again, everyone have a great and safe season full of PR's and "LikeSupporting Heros on facebook tell them I sent you!

Regards

Matt

I don't know about being a badass but I guess I am so used to the routine.  The buddies are even telling me to just take it slow and let myself heal.  I didn't do anything since Monday but tomorrow I'm probably going to try to jog/walk and spin on Thursday.  I feel so sedentary this past two days.  I went to the first check up today and everything is looking excellent and healing very fast.  I know that I heal fast and I feel like my body can start training again but I'll err on the safe side and rest for 2-3 days and go from there.

Thanks!  Spirit is definitely up.  I was chatting and joking with the paramedics, buddies, nurses, and the doctor the whole time!!!  I'll definitely be back on training sooner than what most people want me to... LOL!  Like I told the buddy of mine, i might as well approach this with a positive and humorous outlook.  On the night when the crash happened, I was drinking with the buddies and end up winning the poker house game with the big gauze underneath my neck/chin area!

Great swim this am - 2300. Biked for an hour last night with a really short jog after, it felt good considering I did a HM two days prior :-)HORRIBLE weigh in today though. I have gained almost 6 lbs since beginning this plan. Clearly my nutrition is WAY off and I'm obviously to stupid to figure it out. At this rate I'll be switching from Athena to friggin Clyde :-(

I am in week 1 of the 20 week beginner HIM plan. I did the 16 week olympic (2x, balanced), with 2x a week weight lifting thrown in, leading up to this to get a base.  I thought my volume would initially go down- WRONG!  I am definitely going to have to get used to the 2x per day workouts.  I am ready though... 19 more weeks until Ironman Muncie.

Congrats on the swim but clearly something is way of on the diet.  Why don't you keep a log for a couple days or just post what you eat if you have a good idea of it.  My good friend is a nutritionist that i always listen to, and a lot of people here are generally knowledgeable and willing to help regarding nutrition, me included.  That's a great active recovery from HM...good job.

Welcome! You'll certainly find that it takes a lot and gives a lot back.  You're in a good starting place, and have a great resource in BT.

Great job on your workouts! I think the weight thing is not that unusual for women. I have a friend who is training for her 1st Marathon and has gained 7 pounds. I have been eating  a lot of junk lately and I absolutely know it is directly related to the starting this plan. I need to be more vigilant about my grocery shopping and have a supply of healthy sweet things or I go straight to sugar when I get home from a workout. I don't buy candy very often so a couple of weeks ago I found a container of icing in the cabinet and I've been eating it with a spoon Nasty I know. I was like an addict searching for crack. I had my long run this morning, had to take the kids to preschool, then go grocery shopping. I was walking through the store thinking it is not a good idea to be buying groceries after an 8 mile run LOL!

So for three weeks I've been having soreness on my left knee, a week and a half of rest later, and I finally broke down and called the orthopaedic surgeon today for a check-up. It was either that or say f it and start training again. I guess my maturity won out :-

It's not painful, but I know there's something going on. We'll see what he says. My A race plan begins March 19th so I hope to be back at it before then. I really hope he just takes some x-rays and gives me a steroid shot or something and says I'm good to go - $35 copay. He'll probably want to do an MRI which will cost about $600 after insurance. Not sure if I'd go that route at this point.

Will keep my fellow 1/2 iron beginners updated!
