Mike - sounds like you had a great ride after it stopped raining. Have fun with the masters. Hope your daughter likes the bike maintenance class.

Curt - Sorry the 1000 didn't come off but nice work on the spl and form stuff. Sounds like  a good goal. Can I ask what you're currently training for and what sort of plan you used last time you did use one?

Kate - nice work on the race. Sorry about the breathing issue. I hope you can get it sorted out soon.

I ended up taking a rest week due to knee troubles this week and only did short run/walks and a couple of swims.

This week though I'm planning on doing 3 30 min run/walks and 3 swims though to get back on track. Then next week I'm going to look at getting my bike fixed and see how I go doing week 1 month 1 of the beginner exercise plan and go from there. I've finally found info on the tri I want to do in November but I'm not going to sign up for it until I know the bike and swim distances are doable. That would be 200m swim and 10k bike.

Congratulations Kate!!!!  I'd lay 10 to 1 odds that you're already thinking about the next one / the physcial challenges you faced are fading and you're ready to do better on the next one.

As I've shared before, my first tri had a 500 yard OWS where I took 28 minutes and finished 3rd from the last and I stopped and visited with every kayak on the course.  I thought I was going to die and my Mom was literally in tears on the shore.  But I made it and have done better at each successive one.

Very few folks even give this a shot.  You did it today.  Enjoy the accomplisment and get ready for the next one!!!!!!

+ 1,000,000! Congrats on getting out there, and finishing!! Excellent job!!

Masters swim is done. about 12 folks there for the early Sunday session. After an inital 10 minute swim warmup (and 15 min of stretching) we were divided into 2 groups. one of which did workout sets, and another (mine) which was essentially an hour group swim lesson. Did nothing but dills for balance and kicking. In fact, the instructor (Brandeis U swim coach) told all of us to not do any freestyle swim at all until we ingrain the drills, and the lessons taught by them, into our muscle memory. Breast stroke, backstroke are OK, though. Overall, I thought it was good, and I probably did close to 2000 yards of swimming. He described the approach as "wringing out your prior swim knowledge and becoming a dry sponge to absorb all the new".   I'd actually like to do this 2x/week, but the weekday sessions are too late for my work schedule. So, I survived, it was fun, and I'm going back.

Sharing! Yesterday I SWAM A MILE in the pool, non-stop freestyle! Took me just under 40 minutes. I was feeling good (one with the water...) and just kept going. I had some music in my ears and no kids with me to distract me! I have 1100 to do in my August race and that took me under 30 mins, so I guess I will meet their deadline! WOOOHOOO!

Well I hit another milestone today.  Although this one is not exactly one that I wanted to see.  Today was "exercise to failure".

Headed out for a group ride this AM.  Things were going pretty well until around 30 miles.  At that point I started to feel some cramps in the legs.  At around 35 miles, the legs started talking to me pretty good.  Ag 40.4 miles -- less than 1.5 miles from the end -- the legs went in to "lock down".  Both the hamstrings and the muscle on the inside of the thigh locked up and I thought I was going to die!!!!  Made a call to my wife and she came and rescued me.  Oh well, at least I got 40 miles in!!!

My legs are still locking up on me even an hour and a half after the ride.  Hopefully they'll settle down in the next bit.

I uploaded my race report, its under 'Tri For Fun #2'. I was 353 0ut of 360 with a total time of 2:54:41---and the last four people were actually DNF  or DQ...In the Athena division, I was 11 out of 12. There was no split times, so I had to guess at my times...

I know that finishing it is an achievement, but I am so disappointed with my performance....I'm sure a lot of my mood is the result of being very tired---I had to still get up early and work today, after not sleeping well cause my breathing is STILL painful...Maybe I'll feel better about this tomorrow.

Mike - nice work on the masters swim thing. Can you work on the drills during the week and do the lessons on the weekend to continue getting the benefits of them?

Nada - great job on the mile swim. Hope the race goes well.

Curt -  nice work on the 40 miles. Sorry about the locking legs though

Kate - You still beat people, that's good. Have you found out what's causing the painful breathing yet?

What do you think caused the lock down? Was it hot? I can get crampy quads on the bike during a long ride on a hot day. Electrolytes help me loosen them up.

Oh and I actually found details for the tri I'm thinking of doing so I may still do it but I need to get a hang on the bike section - bit hard when I've avoided it all month, lol. If I do do it though its a 200m swim, 10k bike and 2k run  for the mini. I'll see what happens though - I need to find out starting times etc to figure out how to get there as I doubt I'll be able to talk anyone else in to coming or taking me.  Anyway do you think it's doable?

My last bike ride was 20 mins at a 4.47 mph pace and it's in Early November - 6th to be exact - and I'm pretty sure I can get the swim distance in by then although I'll have to do some practice on the OWS factor and I'm already run/walking over 2k so it's mainly the bike I'm worried about because I started the beginner program and couldn't even get through week 1 plus it is still yelling at me when I do ride it - I'm going to get it fixed and see what happens after that though.

Anything is doable!  Even a month after your first 5k. =)  What sort of barriers do you anticipate for training?  I remember you mentioned $ as one issue (I think for getting into a pool).  Anything else? I see you mentioned you'll have an issue getting to the race, so that's something to consider, too.  You've been making steady progress with your running and so I'm confident you'll see progress with the bike riding.

Wanted an early AM bike, but the rain killed that idea. about 9 AM, I start watching the Tour de France on TV, the sun comes out, and the ride is ON! . Did 23.5 miles @ 19.8 pace. Did have some mechanical issues - the rear tire is rubbing on the wheel cut out and it certainly slowed me down. I'm off to the LBS to get this checked out today. I need it fixed asap! Otherwise, ride felt great and it was nice to get out and ride.

Tomorrow AM I have my first ever masters swim class, and quite frankly, I'm thinking I'm going to get blownn out of the pool. If anything I'll get some instruction, some structured workouts, and see how real swimmers do it . Also planning on a nice 4-5 mile run.

This afternoon I'm off to the local REI store with my 11 year old daughter for a 'bike maintenance basics" class. she just got a new Cannondale street bike, and I want her to know how to fix things on it. Should be fun

Good luck to everyone on their races & workouts this weekend!

Nice, Mike!  The class sounds like an excellent idea for your daughter!

Not to be scary or morbid, but here's an article from the NY Times about drownings during the swim: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/31/fashion/31fitness.html  I tried finding an article about swim-related deaths because Kate's race story triggered remembering an article I read about some athlete's experiencing fluid build up in the lungs during the swim part of a triathlon... unfortunately, I can't figure out the right keywords to find an article in Google. So, Kate and Suzanne... definitely get checked out by your doctors on a regular basis to be aware of internal changes to your heart/lungs (I point those two out because they are mentor group members I recall having health issues related to heart or lungs).

Sara - the main barriers are that I am not very confident on the bike, and have been avoiding it for the last month, lol plus I'll be doing it on my own as the people I do my other races with don't even have bikes so wouldn't be able to compete at all, lol. I may be able to talk them in to coming to watch though. If I can find the time that it starts - not in the details I have found - I may be able to get there by bus though as there's one going from a couple of suburbs over that I can connect to via train or bus.

Johanne

Johanne,

I've not done a written race plan, mainly due to my races so far just being sprints, and I don't think they need a written plan. A short mental one, sure, but the HIM/IM distances would be something I'd spend time writing out. Particularly around planning nutrition, and ensuring I had all the supplies I needed, and knew when I wanted to eat/drink what. Have you tried this question in the iron distance forums?

Go get 'em this weekend!!!

Lots of questions this AM -- feel free to chime in on any/all topics!

1. workouts between races -- I have a few races coming up this summer; 7/23, 7/31, 8/28, 9/11, and maybe 9/18. All sprints. Between the races, what is a good approach to training? Just keep going w/ SBR? I have no plan I'm following (which drives me nuts) and I'm not even sure where to start w/ a plan given the times between races. Should I take a 'maintenance' type approach? I'm lost plan wise after the crappy spring I had.

2. Nutrition/weight -- I seem to ahve gained about 10 pounds in the past 2 months, and I'm not happy. My eating has been spotty, with good days, and not so good days. Coupled with my erratic work outs, its not a big surprise. I'm aiming to lose about 15 pounds in the next 12 weeks. I need consistency in my workouts (see item #1!) and better eating. Any suggestions here?

3. Off season work outs --- how do you plan out off season workouts? This fall/winter will be my first real 'off season', and I'd like to come out next spring ready to rumble . Should I plan out 2012 and see what races I want to do, and plan workouts toward that? I know there are many maintenace plans on BT. Do folks just string a couple together to get through the winter?

4. I'm still irritated about missing my planned half marathon back in March. I've found another in late October, and have built a plan to run that one (assuming no injuries!). Does it seem reasonable to integrate the run training for the HM into workouts around the sprint races I have planned. I'll likely need to rearrange some of the planning as the 'long runs' are planned for Sunday, the same day most of the sprints happen.

5. Do any of you belong to a tri club? Do you feel it makes the sport more social, and is helpful to your overall interest/training?

So, overall I'm feeling like I'm sort of just floating in space without much direction. Also had a lousy run this AM, planned 4 miles, made only 2.5 (Lets just say the need to address the sudden call of nature forces this one to end early). Run felt OK, but I'm just trying to work through some frustrations right now it seems.

That's exactly why I write it out. It keeps me organized I wrote plans for my last Oly's as practice and for the HIM it's going to help make sure I get the nutrition in.
