I am slow, but that seems like even a slow walk. It ranks up there with "swimming" 4min per 100. I actually tried to do a 2:00 50yd lap and I felt like I was simply floating along. |

You cannot believe how fast some of these guys are, the only saving grace was a couple of the leaders and my teammate that won the points total came up and thanked me for driving the pace and working hard for them, they seemed to appreciate the fat guy at the front taking all the air so they could draft.
The only thing I have to say is "Holy Sh*T" That is FAST. Simply awesome!!!! Nice job Uhm... yeah... agreed.
Hour plus on the trainer and time in the pool this morning. Today is my Friday. My family starts showing up today for the weekend celebration of my daughter's and my bdays. Long run tomorrow. Wife is already dropping hints she doesn't want me doing my long ride on Sunday. Booo to that. And SOB IMTX registration is still open. Argggggghhhhh. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=edBOj0R51lM My new pre rigorous training video.

That's the plan. I'm so bad, but if you can't torture your little brother who can you torture? I'd take my Dad along too, but he's smarter than that. |

A guy stated that his goal was to KQ in 4-4.5 years and currently running 20min/mile. I just couldn't sit back and let others feed him endorsement without baselining the realities. if he sponsors he'll KQ in less time. Give WTC $100,000 and he can probably run it in a tutu - 20' miles, cant be. |

Pro 4672 Nutmeg State | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2011 Part 2 - CLOSED On a serious note I'm thinking about getting NASM and USAT Level 1 certified in the next year. Working behind a desk is slowly killing me. Bad side effect is Cindy, the wife, is thinking about doing a HM in November and wants me to train her. This could end poorly. I'm okay training people that I have only a professional relationship with. If they skip workouts I'm fine and adapt. If she skips workouts I start thinking about all the time she spent watching shows on the DVR where she could be training and get snippy. I think its tough to be a coach (and there's a joke that there are more triathlon coaches than actual triathletes). I know USAT offers the Level 1 certification, but I don't think that's all the prep you need to be a coach (its a start -- but I also think its more of a money maker than a true training program). Questions for everyone -- Do you think having a coach valuable? What do you look for in a coach? If you have a coach, why? If you don't why? |

But, you could always buy someone else's # off of Craigs List and run again, they wouldn't know it was you. Ha! The Thanksgiving Half was always my favorite half. My husband, son & one dog would always drop me at the start, grab themselves breakfast, and then drive to the finish along the course. I'd see them along the way. One year my dog jumped out the window and tried to run along side me. Poor girl was bummed when I had to put her back in the car. But it's no longer point to point. It starts and finishes at the Braves Stadium. Not as fun... Storms have been fine around where we are. Finally cooled off last night with some rain. Edited by karen26.2 2011-05-27 5:50 AM |

I think a coach is certainly a valuable component of triathlon training; however the value of a coach compared to the cost is something that wildly varies. In general, a coach provides value over a stock, or even customized, training plan because they (are assumed to) bring a certain level of knowledge and responsiveness to training. A coach is able to adjust a program based on an athlete's response to the training load, whereas the athlete is responsible for making any judgement calls when using a non-coached plan. That being said, I think there are a number of coaches who don't have the appropriate background or experience to justify the costs they charge. For instance, there is a certain member of BT who is a USAT Level 1 coach without substantive experience or background in physiology or sports performance, yet charges upwards of $300 per month for coaching services. By comparison, QT2 charges roughly the same amount and has a significant baseline that is required before being put in front of clients. In 2006, after a year of training consistently, I enrolled in the mentor program at my tri club and was paired up with the club's President. During an early discussion with him, he asked if I was more interested in having a mentor or a coach. He was an experienced triathlete, and a registered nurse, who was just starting out with a few select clients, offered to develop a custom program every 2 weeks, and would join me on the long rides, for $100/mo. He served as my coach for the next 2 years, until I decided to take a break from triathlon, and remains a good friend. If you want to be a coach, and have it become a self-sustaining financial benefit, you need to start small, grow slowly, and let the successes of your athletes be your primary recruiting tool. I've seen people with well-paying jobs decide they no longer enjoy working in an office, so they get a personal training and USAT certifications and, without first building a business first, quit their job. While it may seem better to work for yourself, without a client base to ensure a steady income, the stress quickly takes its toll and, it seems, that the coaching suffers because you become focused on getting more clients instead of devoting your time to managing your current ones. |

What do you look for in a coach? If you have a coach, why? If you don't why? I do not have a coach. Never have had one. Sometimes I think it would be nice to have one, someone that can push me harder because I know I don't on my own. And someone to be accountable to, but I think I'm pretty hard on myself if I miss key workouts so it doesn't happen very often. If I had extra money sitting around, I would consider trying one. And I'd probably use someone that I know from around here just because for me it would be extremely important that our personalities clicked. I know several people that do use coaches. It seems that they are so restricted in what they can and cannot do - such as switch up workouts on the fly, go do a group ride for fun, sign up for a race not in "their plan" (oh my!), it seems like more of a hassle. Not all are like that, but when I hear "let me check with the coach first", or "I can't because I have this blah blah blah workout I have to do" I am thankful that I have a lot of flexibility and can do what I want to do. I realize everyone has different goals, and how you get to them is up to you. If that works for them, great. But that's not for me. I'm mostly in this to have fun and really only compete against myself. And burn calories so I can eat more! I will never be super fast, but I'm ok with that. (Just want to get a little bit faster!) |

New Haven, CT | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2011 Part 2 - CLOSED I have played many sports throughout my life and have had good and bad coaches. Triathlon is the only sport i have participated in where "coaches" work remotely and rarely see their athletes. I cannot imagine this. If i was a coach i would never accept a client who i could not watch train regularly. Unless a coach is standing there watching you, the benefit of coaching is lost. What you are getting is a person who is creating a custom plan based on statistics. the human eye and brain watching the athelete are more importnat than readings off a power meter or heart rates. I coach little league, i cannot imagine emailing hitting instructions and a practice plan after watching the kids take BP. Thus, while I would love to have a coach to push me, establish a good training plan and guide me, i would never subscribe to remote training.
