Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() TriAya - 2010-10-07 8:17 AM Okay--random weird pains during taper is perfectly normal but waking up in exc-pain is not. Where exactly is the pain? is it constant, or knifing, burning, throbbing etc? Please give as much detail as you possibly can, por favor. Make sure the massage is long flushing strokes, NOT deep kneading ones. Drink TONS of water. Does ice help? Ditto - I"m with Yanti -- Weird pains during taper are normal. I agree with the soothing massage--and water, water, water. Start that now! ALso remember to what I call "salt up" before the race -- I usually have something salty I'm used to eating 2 to 3 days before a long endurance event -- ie: popcorn, sushi/soy sauce/pickled ginger, salsa, chinese (no MSG but salty). Keep us posted, Q. |

Make sure the massage is long flushing strokes, NOT deep kneading ones. Drink TONS of water. Does ice help? Yanti, you are absolutely right, I MUST drink a ton of water today to flush toxins. I have found some internets that say a massage 3-4 days before a Marathon is actually desirable, so I remain hopeful I am not doing any damage. THe upper back/neck issues arise from time to time. It's an old war injury from years of being catapulted off the pointy end of aircraft carriers. SOmetimes I regret not asking for partial disability, although it's gotten much better as I've remained more active. It just shows up now and then and I cannot really pinpoint a trigger. Although any future tapers are going to be suspect from now on. It is a pain related to stiffness/tightness and motion. It usually hangs around for a couple of days and goes away. WHat is weird about this episode is that it has sort of seemed like it keeps happening and I can't figure out what I am doing to cause it. Haven't tried ice, but I am going to after my massage. Q |

Melon Presser ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Very light exercise, rest, maybe icing, some easy stretching (not after icing) ... baby yourself. The hay is in the barn--relax and ride it out. Good luck! You will have a blast. No worries, really. Just let your body take care of this in the next few days--it will--and overdo nothing. Including the ibuprofen--use for pain relief, but make sure not so much that you're doing more than you otherwise would. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Q - You already have good advice from Yanti and Lynn so I bow to their wisdom. But I wish you the best of luck on Sunday. And good post on the Taper Traps...Akron, OH....my hometown! I wish we could be on the sidelines supporting you. And maybe someday in the next 50 yrs I will sign up for a marathon myself ![]() Running the race on Sunday is the easy and fun part right? ...especially when compared to all of the training! It looks like the weather is going to be nice...cool in the morning but warming up to 80 that day. Stay safe and run like you trained. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Yanti, Lynn, Ryan, Dineen, THank you ALL for the thoughtful replies and the sane advice. Since I breezed out of here and did not report back, I wanted to drop in before the race. Got the massage, which I think ended up being mostly neutral. The stiffness in my back abated for a time yesterday and is back today with a vengeance. But the good news is I've been through the five stages of grief about it and am at acceptance. Acceptance and wry humor (they go together with me). I look at it this way...maintaining compact non-saggital form will only be easier if I can't move my head from side to side... So I am doing the only logical thing and going to get my hair done. That and working on my playlist. AFA the resources you guys sent me, I looked at all of them. The taper traps was hilarious and I do believe I have wallowed in a majority of them. At least I haven't cheated myself out of any part of this experience. Lynn, thank you for the checklist. As a pilot, I live and die by checklists, so this will get put to good use. I have tried to get worked up about pacing and nutrition, and I just can't. I am going out to run an evenly paced race which is not rocket science. I have too many gu's and 300 calories worth of jelly beans. Water is on the course. Viola. I'll check in as soon as I can after the race... xoxo, Q |

Have a great first mile of your first marathon, second mile of your first marathon (I know maybe your last one, too), third mile.... and enjoy that last 10K.
hugs (and flipper fives) Lynn |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi you guys...the baby got me up at 3am and I can't fall back asleep...Yanti, thanks for posting my time and more importantly the news that I am still alive! I had my hands full today with exciting things like snarfing pizza and trying to figure out how to get up and down stairs. I'll work on my RR (lots of carnage) but the quick and dirty is I hit the wall insanely early and it was a sufferfest for a long, long time. For several miles, I actually thought I might pass out (or at least do a crowd pleasing "swoon") and I sort of had an out of body experience thinking, wow, I might not finish, and I might not have any say in the matter. So there will be lots of thoughtful analysis on what went wrong, what I could have fixed and what was immutable, etc, etc, but I am truly pleased and grateful to have had the opportunity to try and FINISH!!! Thanks so much for the support you guys. I thought about you guys a lot out there...even in my more lucid moments! Haha! Q... P.S. Babydaddy had an eventful day with a strong first half and a disastrous second half. He was cramping so bad at one point he actually just fell down. It actually makes me laugh a little bit. Can you imagine??? He PRed, but by a lot less than he was hoping. |

"I was unable to walk for a whole week after that, so much did the race take out of me. But it was the most pleasant exhaustion I have ever known. "
Here's hoping that's the kind of exhaustion you have mama Q. Congrats to Babydaddy as well.
Can't seem to find that utube clip that's pretty darn funny about the day after a marathon. If I do, I'll post. |
