Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey gang, just a quick check in before loading up the van and heading for Seattle to visit family. I did get in a 5k run this morning and cooled off with a short 400 yards in the pool. We are bringing our bikes and should be able to get a couple rides in while we are there. Not sure if I'll be checking in or not while away for the week. Happy and safe training to everyone. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Originally posted by wbayek Derek, that's a great swim. What a cool way to get in some OWS practice. Joanne, great job sacrificing for the good of the team! Tony, might want to sign up for the EN 4 keys talk for IMWI. It's free but they are getting so popular they like to get an idea of head count beforehand. I'm trying to figure out a target watts for my Timberman relay leg. I rode the entire course at 90% FTP last weekend and it didn't seem overly taxing, especially since I was on completely non-tapered legs. I'm probably gonna ride it again this coming weekend and shoot for a slightly higher wattage. I'm guessing either my FTP is a little higher than my last tested value, or that my power curve is very flat, meaning I don't degrade in performance as quickly as the formulas suggest. Based on my riding so far with this power meter, I think the latter is definitely true, but I also wonder if I should test again. I HATE doing a 20 minute all out effort though! Warren, you sandbagger! Your 'FTP' is just plain wrong! In reality it's probably 345Watts. So step up your game dude! You can forget measuring a new FTP, just go out and ride the whole course again at 100% of your 'FTP' and see how it goes. |

My wetsuit the DeSoto looks like it did good in the testing. I love the two piece wetsuit. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Derek nice swim! Vero have a great trip. Warren I hope your test went well. As for me i had mentioned in a previous post that Warren had been helping me with my riding and yesterday I did a 1 hour ride that included 11 minute threshold intervals followed by a 3 miles run. The ride was hard but i made it and I felt good on the run so I know I am making progress. I wanted to share how Waren has helped me because I know how busy he is and I am greatful that he took the time out to coach me through what I have been struggling with for all these years after only 4 short weeks I can see the improvements already and I actually look forward to my training sessions to see how much better I can do! Thank you Warren! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Vero have a safe trip and I hope you have a great time visiting your family. JoAnne that's great to hear that you are making good progress and that Warren has been nice enough to help you out. I got the same help from friends and it paid huge dividends for me. Keep at it and you'll continue to make progress and you will continue to see noticeable improvements. I got another long run in last night, 18 miles and it wasn't easy even though I was running at an easy pace but I can see just how far I've progressed. I think my legs were a little dead and by mile 10 I knew it wasn't going to be pleasant and that I would just need to press on and finish it. I think my body and mind have finally gotten with the program. Where I once might have called it a day or shortened the run or any workout for that matter I've been able to just push through it and push on. When I started the IM training I never thought I'd actually get myself in a position to actually do it. I can say with 38 days to go I'm there. If I had to do this tomorrow I could do it however I'm grateful I still have some more time to continue to get ready. |

![]() | ![]() Tony, you are definitely ready for IMWI. The key to these last few weeks is to stick to the plan and don't get stupid! Will - AWESOME!!!! From all accounts that is a great event. Hopefully the swim/tide timing is good this year. JoAnne - You're very welcome but I'm not going to let up on the intervals! Remember, this journey takes patience and perseverance. So as for me, I did a bike TT loop I haven't done yet this year and I've certainly improved. My previous PR was 43:51 and I did it this morning in 42:03, even though my legs weren't feeling very fresh going in. Unfortunately Jeff, my watts were almost exactly where my last measured FTP says they should be for a 40 minute ride. I rode the course with the Garmin blocked up so there was no input during the ride to sway my effort, I just went all out after a good warmup. Even so, I'm going to take Jeff's advice (sort of) and ride Timberman this weekend at close to that FTP, and see how long I can hold it. |

PPD Beach2Battleship Iron Distance Event Registration Receipt Thank you for your registering and racing with Set Up Events. Best post of the day!.........And I can use the good news right now! Great ride Warren. Someday I'll have something along the lines of power numbers to get a better gauge of my effort. I may even have to jump into a cycling class at my team store to get some idea. They have computrainers with all the relevant info and do a 10 minute test at the beginning of a 4 week class. The class is run by local pro and teammate, Zack Ruble. His last class posted an average relative wattage improvement of 19.3%. I could use that kind of number!! The class is $60 for 4 weeks. I'll give it some consideration. _____ BTW, I will be a little distracted for a while. If I'm in and out for a while please understand if my posts are a little out of touch or weird.

So I have a question regarding a dropped chain. So a client of the salon was asking about my HIM and I was telling him that I dropped my chain twice, this guy is a know it all and he told me that you can get the chain back on while still riding.......... WHAT?????? I told him that was impossible and that I would love to see him do that and I stood my ground but now I am thinking would that be possible? there seems to be so many things I don't know about biking but this one ??????? Maybe there is something Iam unaware of ![]() Here's an awesome recipe if anyone is looking for a high protein delicious snack: 1 cup Greek yogurt plain non fat 1 scoop chocolate protein powder ( I use Dymatize ISO 100) 1 tbs of natural peanut butter Cinnamon to taste It is awesome and you get 51 grams of protien in 1 serving! Maybe there is something Iam unaware of ![]() Yes it is possible to go both ways when you drop a chain. I have had it happen a couple of times recently on both of my bikes. If the chain comes off to the outside of the big ring it is more likely you'll have to stop riding and replace the chain manually. This seems to be because when the chain has come off it drops and gets caught in the crank arm and sometimes wedges itself into the narrow gap between the crank arm and the bottom bracket. This has happened to me a few times and, as I seem to recall, only when I have been trying to throw a lot of power at one time. For instance: If I just went through a stop sign and didn't select the correct gear because I wasn't expecting a complete stop, etc. If the chain comes off the inside of the small ring/rings it is more likely that you can spin easily to get the chain back on. This happens because the derailleur won't as readily allow the chain to drop and bind up, unless it drops between one of the rings at a poor angle. The derailleur, in this case, helps the chain back onto the ring. A key note here is to make sure that if you drop your chain to the inside that you select the inside ring on your shifter to help get your chain back on as you pedal slowly. I have only dropped my chain a few times but my experience is that I have had to stop if the chain drops off the outside and I can keep going if the chains drops to the inside. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Dirk it sounds like it would be well worth the $60 for that class if you can gain that much improvement over 4 weeks. I'd definitely consider doing that. JoAnne thanks for posting the recipe sounds a lot better than the plain old protein shake. Also, just to let you know I got an email yesterday from WTC on the Syracuse tech shirt that we both did not recieve. It should be here in two weeks. Did you hear back from them yet? |

WHAT?????? I told him that was impossible and that I would love to see him do that and I stood my ground but now I am thinking would that be possible? Yes, this it is very possible to get the chain back on while riding, but safety is always the #1 issue so just be sure to do what you're comfortable with. I wouldn't recommend mucking around with stuff for the first during the race if this happens and you're in a crowd. Related question - was this twice on a recent ride? If so you might want to check the setup. Old chain or incorrect derailleur adjustments could be responsible. Edited by wbayek 2013-08-02 8:04 AM |

If you do this class, you'll have to share the protocol. I fear you if you ever train with power! A few things I've really realized is I had been going WAY too hard on recovery between intervals, and maintaining relatively constant power on hills is massively difficult. What I though was constant wasn't even close. It's much easier on long gradual climbs, but the shorter steepish hills really throw the watts through the roof without even realizing it. And your posts are always weird, so no worries. Take care of what needs to be taken care of, and we're all here for each other. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Looks like everyone has some big races on the horizion. Will, congrats on registering, I'm sure you will have a blast. Tony, sounds like you are prepared for your upcoming little event. ![]() Dirk, if your looking for power workouts without all the cost I would highly recomend Traineroad. By far the best $10/month Ive spent in relation to training. Just a few hours a week through the winter and I was able to see hugh improvements to my FTP. And it was all in the comfort of my pain cave, well living room with 52" TV. Jo, ill have to try that recipe, this one is a go to for me: 1 banana, frozen or thawed 1/2 cup frozen raspberries, 1/2 cup frozen blueberries, scoop of protien powder 1-2 tbsp of cocao powder (loaded with anti-oxidents, and almost no calories) water/yoghurt/milk (any mix depending on what I have in the fridge. I also substitue the banana with raw baby spinich for a different flavour once in a while. Cheers |

![]() | ![]() I am SO mad at myself right now. We had a typical hectic end to the Friday workday and a hurried exit to head up to the lake. In the chaos, I left my Garmin at home! So no power on the Timberman ride, and no pace for the run afterwards. I was hoping to shoot for a higher wattage and see if I could hold it, but I'll just have to ride harder by feel. Such a scatter brain! Oh well, one more chance next weekend. |

Yeah suck it up buttercup, a little RPE never hurt anyone. better yet, maybe you are right, training without the Garmin would be horrible. You have my permission to just hang out and down a few cold ones this weekend. I'm sure it will not affect your race times at all. Have a good weekend! Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Warren that sounds like me I've done that quite a bit forgetting to bring something along that I need for training. Sorry to hear but not as sorry as Matt sounds lol. Hope you're able to get your training in even if it's not what you were hoping for. BTW thanks for providing the link to EN, I'm signed up for the session in Wisconsin. Dirk and Jeff, good luck guys at Tri Indy. I wish I could have been there to witness this epic battle. You guys will just have to do it again next year. Good luck to any other Junkies who are racing this weekend. I'll be getting my first century ride in this weekend. I was supposed to do it tomorrow but the weather might not be so good so we moved it to Sunday. I'm hoping to do 112 miles and run 2 or 3 miles off the bike afterwards. We'll see how it goes. |
