Artemis - 2009-04-09 10:21 PM Cat (and Dee and anyone else interested): went to the doc today.  The GI I saw last year mentioned he thought it might be IBS, so that's what I'm being treated for right now.  If that doesn't work, I get to go back in for lots of tests again.
Could it be... um... what's that reaction to gluten.....? Celiac disease?

I would definitely try going of gluten...or insisting that your gastro tests for it.  you can do a blood test (it only is accurate 75% of the time).  There are also more involved ways that you can be tested.

My gastro never looked into it...nothing he prescribed ever worked.

Other issues that often go hand in hand with celiac include a skin issue (viscules?...like little tiny water blisters that develop, open and burn something fierce) and poor dental...I think that it has to do with the enamel.  Because it is an immune system issue you may find that you get sick more easily than other people...your body is always fighting the gluten making you more susceptable to viruses and infections.

Oh that would be a great outcome Jen! Crossing my fingers for you!

I know you had a colonoscopy so at least we know its not what I have!

Yep.  They also tested me for Crohn's and Celiac Disease, so I know it's not either of those.  IBS fits - the pain gets worse when I am really stressed out or eat really bad.

So far, I don't feel much different from taking the meds before I eat.  I imagine it may take a few days.  And I'm supposed to change my diet and stop eating junk and more veggies and fiber.  Yeah.
Once again, I should have kept reading. (But I have 2 days worth of posts to go through.) OK, so it's not Crohn's or Celiac disease. Those were the two I was thinking of.... Aren't there some new meds for IBS?

hmm...I should have kept reading as well.

oh well, y'all learned something.

Its fine with me! Ive been there... after the round with doctors and stuff a few years ago its funny what you start to think is NORMAL to talk about!!!!

X 2. As a pediatric nurse and as a parent, it's funny what has become normal conversation topics. I really have to censor myself when I'm not around people I work with or my immediate family. As a matter of fact, I was discussing poop with a couple colleagues over ice cream sundays at work tonight. Totally normal conversation while eating, right?

Lots of times, I get told not to talk about work at the dinner table.  Animal dissection doesn't go over well with lots of people.

That's a great conversational opener.

My mom brings is up a lot.  Also the time I brought a sheep brain home over Christmas break so that I could study for anatomy.  Can you tell I've been a science nerd for a long time?

It's alright.  I don't have any of the other celiac symptoms, so I really don't think that's it.  It would have shown up on a colonoscopy anyway.

my gastro gave me a Rx for one...I dont remember what it is called but it is a dark blue capsule.    I have only used it once.  It seemed to work...I was no longer doubled over and wimpering in pain.

look on the bright side... at least you still have internet and access to BT.

I am currently hiding in the attic...I am not allowing myself to come down until I have taken care of some stuff...mainly bills and school work.

I have major gardening distraction issues (just look at my log) and I know that I can't wander outside when I am up in the attic

BTW... for all the gardners out there...
I'm excited today... my grandfather's heirloom tomatos germinated today (well two of the six I planted)  It's kind of bitter sweet... my grandfather passed away two and half years ago... when leaving his house for the last time, his girlfriend gave me a handkerchief of his with some seeds wrapped in it.  My grandfather was ALWAYS known as the Tomato Man, raising the best plants and tomatos in all of town.  He hadn't bought a seed since the early '80's.

Yes, as long as the power does not go off.  It is nice having BT to keep me company.  I have the flashlights in my pocket.

x2

I have started collecting seeds from cool plants. The latest seeds were shaken out of cones that I plucked from a Contorted Larch.  I park next to it at school every day.  I am going to get little bitty glass jars for all the different kinds of seeds I collect.  The jars are hex shaped, 1.5 inches wide and 2 inches high.  I think that they are really fun.
