I think trainer miles are much harder. The boredom, lack of airflow, zero coast or recovery time it's way harder than being on the road. Road rides vary too, a ride could be totally flat or totally hills, steep hills or little rollers. I have a powertap on my trainer wheel so power is power.
If I go in a low gear and pedal 55 RPM I'm not doing much but when I'm in the big ring pedaling over 100 RPM I'm working pretty hard and those miles count. I easily could go out riding for 2-3 hours, inside I can go an hour to an hour and a half before I'm dying to get off even with Coach Troy and other video entertainment surrounding me.

Last year I only tracked my time and not my mileage but I'm having fun adding it all up and watching the miles grow. I'm really looking forward to spring coming and getting some nice long outdoor rides.

Bopper - 2010-02-01 5:01 PM

losta - 2010-01-31 11:36 PM Can you estimate trainer miles? I use a garmin on my trainer it has wheel and cadence sensors.
Bopper - 2010-01-31 11:09 PM

Here are the Bopper totals...

Bike - 9:43 (all trainer... so no mileage)
Run - 1:37 .... 13 km... not bad for first time in 6 months
Swim - 8:46 ... 16.5 km
Yoga - 5:40
Strength - 2:00

Physical Therapy and Massage - 5 hours.

Hopefully everything will begin to build again soon.

Oh yes... I could put the magnet on the rear wheel and have the "mileage" recorded, but personally, I don't think that trainer mileage is accurate. It really depends on how hard you have the resistance set, how much pressure in the rear tire, how much pressure from the resistance drum to the wheel there is, how hard you're working, no wind resistance, etc, etc...

Don't get me wrong... doing a trainer ride is irreplaceable, but the mileage is not the same. I can spin 35 km/h hour on the trainer for a long time... but how hard am I really working? So I take the magnet off the back wheel and don't use it at all. I only use the cadence sensor to give me that feedback, everything else is effort and heart rate based. This is just my preference... and you may do what you like... it all depends on what you feel is relevant.

January's totals:
Bike:2h 30m  - 41 Mi
Run:8h 53m 18s  - 37.38 Mi
Swim:18h 02m  - 36900 Yd
Chiropractic:30m
Elliptical Training:1h 00m
Physical Therapy
Thought I would post my totals...very strange month for me!!!

I hope everyone realizes that your totals only reflect YOUR training. You should never do more to keep up with the "group". It takes time to build a base. That being said volume increases shouldnt be more than 10%/week or you risk injury.

No one should swim 18 hours in a month...it ruins your sinuses!LOL I think I am becoming THE QUEEN OF CHLORINE!!!!!

way to go ms 18 hrs of swimming... Now thats some training !!!!!!   I have always joked that I should just swim & bike while completely ignoring the whole running thing to see how I'd do in a tri.. just no guts

The hardest thing for me this month is to stop comparing myself with where I was or what I could do, thats demotivating for me big time

have a question and need some opinions.

a friend of mine wants me to do the alcatraz swim in october. it is on october 2. my first, and very important to me, HIM is at the end of october. how much will doing alcatraz interfere with my training a month from my race day. i don't believe i will have any problem with the distance as i have done the swim on HIM relay with a months training. I am going to lose a week of run and swim during Ragbrai in july and august. i really want my HIM to be a good experience and i don't want to do something contradictory to that.

Here's my totals for January. I think I need a little goal adjusting. A 5k at the end of the month may be a little early. I found one at the end of March, that may be a better idea. happy Tuesday to all.

Bike: 7h 14m
Run: 6h 06m 35s - 3.46 Mi
Stretching: 2h 30m

If you are comfortable swimming that distance already...I say go for it! Use it as a training swim/OWS for your HIM. Look at the volume you will be doing in that particular week of your HIM training and substitute it for a long swim. Have fun Rebecca, I have heard great things about that swim

Are you followinga 5K plan? It makes it alot easier to get your workouts done if you have something to look at that says today you do X. I know with crazy shift work this doesnt always jive and you have to play with it...but it will keep you from skipping a workout

Well today was a VERY good day. I ran 4 miles PAIN FREE!!!! It felt great, albeit a little slow. I was cleared by my doctor to return to work....which I need to do ASAP. Perhaps I will not spend as much time in the pool this month.LOL

I wouldn't say I am comfortable swimming that right now although I could swim the distance right now. i don't tire very easily in the water. I have plenty of time to train. I was just worried that I might be tired after and might affect my training. My friend said the water is the warmest in october so I would not have to worry about catching a cold. Thanks for the advice!

Great news - congrats Mav!!  I think I was starting to smell the chlorine from here
I have a question for everyone -
I broke down and bought a new pair of running shoes today after only 7 weeks in the other pair.  I've had 3 pair of the Brooks Adrenaline GTS shoes prior to changing in Dec.  I originally bought the Brooks at the recommendation of my local running store because I overpronated.  Liked them and never had any problems, but in December they put me back on the treadmill in-store and said that I didnt overpronate as much (maybe 2 yrs in the Brooks partially corrected it) and put me in a more neutral shoe - the Nike Lunarglide.  Very squishy, soft shoe!!  Its very comfortable, but after 5 miles I experience some discomfort on the inside of my ankle.  I iced it, rested it, etc and every time I run the same thing happens!!  Anyone  have experience changing running shoes and experiencing similiar problems??>  Could this be the cause??
