PennState - 2010-05-10 9:00 AM Anyone training today?

3 mile run, 2000 yards of swimming (mostly drills).

thats great! How did it feel??

I puked after the swim.

Ever see Rocky during the training montage when he's carrying that huge log, and he drops it out of exhaustion.  Then he thinks, 'Yo, dere's no way I'll beat Apollo if I can't do this', picks it up, and goes on.  My kick drills were kinda like that.

It did feel good being back, I haven't really trained in 2 weeks.  20 miles LSD on the bike tommorow.  I'm doing nothing but volume the first few weeks, I'll add in intensity when my legs have adapted.

haha love the reference!
im glad it felt good getting back at it

So I need to ask a question about cassettes (sorry, I know we have been down this road before).  I am probably going to purchase another cassette that gives me another climbing gear. I currently have 11-25 on both my road and tri bike. While searching the internet (does anyone have a recommendation where to buy a cassette on line?) I discovered that there are more combinations then I thought. I see that there are 11-28 and 12-27.  One store had 10 speed ultegra cassettes with  combinations  from 11-23 to 11-28 and then 12-23 and 12-25 (no 12-27).  I have 105's on my road bike and am perfectly fine with a 105 cassette. Do certain models have different ratios? I assumed that the different cassettes (105, Ultegra, etc) had all the same gear offerings but now I am thinking that isn't the case (or stores don't carry all the options).  Would an 11-28 and/or a 12-27 work with a compact crank and if so is there a reason to get one over the other? (If I understand this at all it would seem that the 11-28 would provide a wider range of gear options).
Thanks for the help!

I'm a big fan of the compact / 12-27 combo; at least that's what I used when I'd did my climbing.  As for the type, the only real difference between an Ultegra, DA, and 105 is weight.  A very small amount of weight.

I'm looking at the same thing.  Good timing for a little recovery prior to another build week.

PennState - 2010-05-11 8:19 AM I would suggest the 12-27 myself. Ultegra is the best quality for the $$$. Yes 105 is cheaper and Dura ace is better, but truthfully Ultegra is good stuff IMHO.

X2, this is the set up I have on my tri bike with standard crank and it works well.  My road bike with DA has 11 - 28 with a compact crank and I am really liking the set up.  But I think that DA is the only derailler compatible with the 11 -28, but I could be wrong.

ETA: As far as online stores, I would check the ones here on BT that you see the banner ads for.  Usually there is a 10% off code so you can add that in when doing comparison.

Yep, this weather is very discouraging. We are now under a "storm watch" for tomorrow.  A snow storm watchFrown.    The mountains could get up to two feet. That water runs into the reservoirs where we have tris. There is one tri scheduled for two weeks from now. Glad I didn't sign up for that one!

hardest part at this stage is the mental aspect. Just hard to motivate after an IM. Did you really puke?

Yeah, it probably had as much to do about the acidity of the Gatorade as the intensity of the workout.  My arms are sore today though.

It's not really hard for me to motivate, I hate to say it, but I didn't finish an IM.  There was no shining medal or congratulations, no goals achieved...etc.  I'm more motivated now than ever.

Sometimes a week of recovery gives you more gains than a good week of training.

Using an experience you aren't thrilled with as motivation to be better and train smarter is a very healthy response.  Certainly more healthy than what a lot of people would do... be depressed and not train or maybe quit altogether.

Just think how much sweeter crossing the line will be one day... you'll remember IMSG and you're sense of accomplishment at conquoring that demon will be immense.

Hi guys - sorry about the bad weather this week! We had some bad rain yesterday and it has been unseasonably cold for San Francisco in May, so I'm hoping it starts to warm up as the week progresses.

This morning I went for the first time and swam before work. I used to totally be a morning person but over the last 5 years I have been getting lazier and lazier in the mornings and now usually get up around 7. I decided it's time to break that habit since I need to start swimming in the morning due to my pool's schedule. I was in the water at 5:55, out by 6:45 and had a great swim.

My coach has us doing time trials (usually 1200-1500 yards broken up into 3x400 or 3x500s) every few weeks to track our progress. Back in March I was at 2:15/100 average and this morning I was at 2:01/100 average. I'm super excited! Swimming in my strength and it's nice to see if I put some effort in the pool I am able to see big improvements. My goal for the next time trial is to break the 2:00/100 barrier.

It's cold here too. 80 degrees today. Brrrrrrrr. I hate Phoenix. No snow though.

Of course, in a few weeks I'll be hating life because it will be 110 degrees but I'll take the 80 degree days any day.

After seeing your post I went and looked for it.  You are right, it was interesting.  I am looking forward to the other 9!

Yes, however that's way too advanced for me, I'm just trying to get my form right then I'll focus on when to finish my stroke.

I do plan on buying his dvd though.

Thanks Josh,

I don't want to keep bringing it up because it doesn't consume me with negativity but it does drive me to get better in the sport.  I definately feel have something to prove.  Does it make me feel like less of person than the guy that did finish?  Yes it does, but I plan to remedy that.

My wife has been really understanding about it and actually gave me the go ahead to get a P3 but she's also been waiting to go to Italy for years and although I really really want a P3, it would be pretty selfish of me to accept.

IMSG is still open and if its still up in August I may just pull the trigger.  It all depends on where we are with the Italy trip.  Its an awesome event but there are so many negative variables that go into it that make it very very tough.  Mark my words that within the next 5 years IMSG will have a race with a 25% dnf (it was 14% with perfect weather), the weather is that crazy.  I hate to detract people from it because they do put on a great event and its actually a destination (Zion, Bryce, Moab) worth going to.  The people of St. George really did embrace it.
