I did a 5k tempo run this evening and it was tough. I still felt like my legs were pretty heavy from the 21 mile TT on the bike last night. I never did feel like I had a decent stride or a comfortably hard pace. It was pretty hard all the way through.

I purchased a wetsuit through ebay last week and I got it on Tuesday. It is a bottom of the line Neosport Sprint suit. I got it for $104 and it was shipped and to my door in about 4 days. I am planning an OWS this Saturday and another one next Saturday too. I would like to get a couple of them in before June 12. I am not planning workouts around these swim, just some time to get used to the suit and get some experience in the open water. The fit seems very good and it should be a good starter suit for me. In a couple of years, if things go well, I will plan on an upgrade. Right now I think the cheaper route fit better for me.

Also, for all you guys talking about wetsuits, David may have a connection for some higher level Xterra suits at a good price. Is this still the case David?

it is indeed if anyone is looking for one!

newbz - 2010-05-20 8:22 PM on th TT warm up/pacing. i would aim to get in at least 30 min total of riding, maybe a bit more. 15 min easy, and then some quick 30 sec pickups to just over race pace and back down, a few more min of easy riding and then 2-4x1-2min at race pace. get to the starting line sweating, you dont want a massive HR spike when you start (it will be much harder for it to settle) pacing wise, this is deff an event to neg split unless you are starting with a tail wind. if the wind is on the calmer side HOLD BACK the first 2 min, no matter how hard you start it will feel easy, dont ruin it here. you have 24 miles to make up for a slower first two min. ease into the pace over the first 2-4 min, then ride hard for the first half, at half way start going a bit faster. with 5 miles left you should be hurting, a lot. with 2 left you should be ready to fall off your bike. if you finish and your tongue is not hanging out/you have spit all over your face because it hurts too much to turn your head, you paced it right. speed wise, for me, a similar course 40k and olympic tri, (flat course) i am around 24-25 for the olympic, 25-26 for the 40k. once you get hte power meter, oly distance if you are well trained will be .94 to .97 of your FTP (functional threshold power or 60 min power).

Awesome!!!!!!  That's hilarious!!!  Regardless of how true I know this statement is, I think its really funny.  David, this statement reminds me of the 5k you ran during the Spring mentor group where you puked all over the place after you finished.  I guess it kinda shows your coaching philosophy in a way.  As someone else said a few posts ago....."go big or go home."

its called slobberknocking pace! so hard you dont even bother to turn your head to slobber.

not to be confused with being slobberknocked, which is a hit in football/hockey/rugby/Aussie rules football, where you get hit so hard you stop dead/bounce/get the slobber knocked out of you.

If I'm trying to end really hard on the bike I pace so that I burn out about .5miles from my house.  That way I still have a little bit of distance left to struggle with in order to empty the tank Wink.

I'm chomping at the bit for my PT to arrive.  I keep checking the tracking page.  It left Bloomington CA this morning at 6AM.  IT is shipping FedEx Ground and the tracking says it will arrive on the 25th :/

Wow...I'm kind of scared to race now.  If in my RR I don't describe how I spit in my own face and puke at the finish line, then you all will know that I took it easy...LOL.

Thanks for the warm up advice...I was thinking about something like that to get myself sweating...but I probably wouldn't have done that much.  The first part of the race is into the wind a little, so it's a negative split any way you cut it...but I'll try to save some energy and start get into a groove till about mile 8, then start to push the pace.

if the way out is into the wind you'll end up (need to) push harder into the wind, you'll have the help from the tailwind on the way back. still a bit easier effort wise for the first few min, but if you know its a head out/tail back, push more on the way out, because you'll be moving faster on the way back you'll have less chance to make up time. (at similar efforts it will take longer into the wind/less with).
push the headwind a bit more and everything you have left on the way back.

LOL...I'm doing the same with my Garmin Edge 500.  It was shipped on the 17th, but expected delivery isn't till June 7th.  I think it'll get here before that though...I think it's Fed Ex's way of playing it safe when shipping to Hawaii.  Most packages take 4-6 bus days to get here.

Wheelbuilder hasn't contacted me yet about finishing my wheel...but it would be funny if I got the PT wheel before I got my computer.

That's kind of like the common uphill/downhill philosophy in that it is very hard to take full advantage of downhills.

jgerbodegrant - 2010-05-19 12:46 PM How much is it to rent one?

I rented my wetsuit from www.wetsuitrentals.com It was recommended on one of the threads on this site. Since I had never wore a wetsuit before, I was unsure if it fit right. I called the company, they answered right away. Gave me some advice on how to tell if it was a proper fit and even offered to express ship me the next size up if it really didn't fit.
Turns out, it did fit, I just needed to pull it up more and get someone to help me zip the back (oh, yeah and realize that they are suppose to fit snuggly- not my most flattering outfit) Anyhow, I love the suit and will be buying it from them. They allow you to purchase your used suit if you like it.
It cost around $50 with shipping.

If I rent one online that is where I will be renting from too.  Am starting to be a  little hesitant to order w/o trying on as my body shape is not your typical triathlete - I was "blessed" with a large bust Embarassed  don't know how that will fit into the picture (or wetsuit).

Robin,
Tell them this when you order your wetsuit. The website asks for you height and weight, but then it has a section where you can write any additional information that you think they might need to know in selecting your suit (or any specific things/features you want with the suit).

HAHA!!  I'm all about it.  I have had runs like this, where instead of spitting you just sort of use your labored breathing to force it out.

Gross, but it's reality people.

Lately it seems as if my bank account has been taking some major hits.  I love triathlon but it is a bottomless pit on my savings.  Once my job starts up for the summer next week it won't be so bad but right now signing up for races feels like I'm loping off one of my arms.  I've waited until the very last day(today) to wait to sign up for a 3-race sprint series this summer before the price goes up $10.  I'm also going to Canada tonight because my best friend finally turned 19.  I only really want to go to have some fun in the casino.  I know, yet again I tap into my savings.  But I made myself a promise that if I podium my AG for the overall scores of the sprint series or if I win over $100(I fully expect to lose all the money I came with) in Canada that I will walk away and buy myself an aero helmet.

A little bird once told me that an aero helmet was the best return you can get for the money.  I don't know if I will buy one....but it's probably worth it.

1)  I got two SRAM ones on ebay pretty cheap...gotta wait it out though.  Buuuut, just bought one of the only hubs from the like 1 year that is shimano and not SRAM compatible...so I had to get an emergency one yesterday at LBS (Ultegra for $85 - worked a deal), but will order the other from performance bike - Ultegra on sale for $70 and 10% off today, if you're a performance member and/or get it shipped to store, its even cheaper/free shipping.

That being said...I've got an 11-23 and 11-25 SRAM PG 1070 I probably don't need anymore with very low miles...

2)  Not sure what PF is, but I my guess is that I hope I don't know.

Sweet....thanks for that link.  Was looking for shimano.  PF is plantar fasciitis.  I am not sure if I spelled that correctly and am too lazy to look it up.

PF hurts like crazy. Especially in the morning. Getting up out of bed is the worst part about it. The pain should be more concentrated in your heel but will hurt throughout most of the bottom of your foot. When I was in the Army I had a bad pair of boots that just really busted my feet up. I actually had to go to the aide station about it and they had me get inserts for my boots, take a lot of ibuprofen and try to stretch my feet out whenever possible. It took me about 6 or so months until my feet got over it. Thats the good thing. Do you have PF?

you just missed the 20% off everything sale at nashbar.  I believe it ended on 5/14.

I got an ultegra cassette that will go on my PT wheel for $56.  It was already on sale for $70, so with the 20% it came out to $56.  Regular price is $100

I haven't experienced PF (and don't want to either), but if you want to know more about the muscles involved, see:

http://www.athletestreatingathletes.com/

Look at Part 9 for a good view on the PF and adjoining muscles.   Also see Part 1 for the Posterior Tibialis as it is often involved in PF, i.e., when it is tight, it is pulling on the PF.

I have my 40k TT and am going to try and go all out.  I won't be racing again till late june which is just a 1 mile OWS race, and I won't be racing my bike until late July...so I'll need to get it all out of me.

Looking forward to the pain...

Funny, my wife says this is what I live for.  She routinely tells people that I am addicted to pain.  Well I a not sure it is an accurate statement but I know what she means.  I see pain as a means to a successful end I guess.

Finished my 8 mile long run today.  But it wasn't without incident!! Some MORON!!!!!!!!!!! wouldn't move over while I was running down a lightly traveled road and I had to stick my hand out to keep my upper arm from hitting his passenger side mirror.  I barely hit it but I was fumed enough to stop and turn around and throw my arms in the air.  he stopped about 100 feet away from me and I walked toward him but he started to inch away, then stopped and inched.........  I just turned and finished my run.

As it turns out there was a car coming from behind me that I couldn't hear because an airplane was taking off.  I live near the Ft. Wayne "international" airport.  Had I known this I would have gotten off the road and given way to the traffic (because I know people are idiots) but there was a steep decline that was beside the road and negotiating it would have been pretty difficult while running.  I would have had to stop and then slowly get in the ditch.  Plus the weeds are wet from the rain last night and I probably would have slipped on my way down and fallen.

Either way he's an idiot!  I will take some of the blame for not hearing the car from behind and not giving way (I'm kinda stubborn) to him (because I do want to live) but as in any other state "pedestrians ALWAYS have the right of way!"

OWS in a little while report on that later.  BTW this will be my first OWS ever.
