Hey all. I have been out of town and out of commission (sick) for a week. I am back and much better now, if not quite at 100%.

I have tried to catch up on the thread.

GREAT races folks!

Marla, thanks for the review of the wetsuit. I personnaly like the sleeveless for freedom of motion. I haven't been in really cold water but I have found if I wear a hoodie I stay as warm as I need.

Going to try a run today and see how it goes.

What is in the cards for all of you today?

wmcgee62 - 2010-05-24 3:37 PM Are you doing the clinic/swim 1 or 2 miles? The run on next day?

all of the above! Doing the clinic on Saturday, and 1 mile swim on Sunday, and then the 5k with my daughter on Monday. 1st OWS other than the paddling around we did a few weeks ago, and 1st 5k. Not really nervous about those except when thinking about how I choked (literally & figuratively, lol) in that OWS with the full wetsuit.

That OWS experience was a big reality check for me, too... I think I've been taking the swimming piece for granted (that is, thinking it'd be the easy part), and not really appreciating how different an experience it'll be to be racing in a lake...raced in pools as a kid, and have swum in lakes forever, but never put the 2 together. I'm feeling most nervous about not having put more miles on my bike, but that's mostly due to scheduling issues & not finding many places close by where I feel safe riding on the road...so, need to lower my expectations for my 1st race and remember that my goal has always been to finish & not to worry about being competitive.

There you go! You will do better than you expect

Glad you're feeling better...thought of you as we were cruising through Charlotte last week.

After watching NCIS last night in my new sleeveless wetsuit (nice combo I thought, if not a bizarre visual for the family room), I'm heading to an outdoor pool open after lunch to try it in the water. Expecting the XL via UPS tomorrow, so will head back to the pool w/ that one and see how they compare. Can't say enough good things about Xterra. I also figured that I might have more luck trying to get used to swimming in the damn thing in the pool alone, first, before the mosh pit of the lake clinic.

ironannekidd - 2010-05-24 5:54 AM Good morning everyone!

How did the races go this weekend?

The race went well.  I did much better on the OWS than last weekend, but the best part had to be racing with a fellow BT'er.  The race was really well run and it was a very nice course, nice pre/post race set up, etc.   It was a bit hot, but I think I prefer that over 50 degrees and raining.  Running across a dam twice in 85+ degrees heat was brutal.  I was really glad I wasn't doing the Oly.

I'll do a race report/blog soon.

Its better thank you. High stress is killing the drive.  Possible loss of job and an parting of ways with the girlfriend are factors. Keep smiling and keep moving.

WOWOWOWOWOW that is a whole lotta crapola going on at one time! Use the training as a stress reliever. Try not to put too much on yourself in that area. You will progress just by doing often times.

...and as my mom would say, "but other than that Mrs. Lincoln, how did you like the theatre?"

Channeling stress through pounding at the water and pounding up some nasty hills doesn't work for channeling angst, eh?

Hope your day didn't suck too badly (another oft heard quote, this one from my spouse).

Thanks for my tasty drink. I shocked the family when I didn't clean out the Harris-Teeter on this trip. Since I've gone healthy and drink clear, non-carbonated beverages, my Cheerwine consumption has dropped off considerably.

And, besides offering my family (and ghoulies) yet another cheap laugh, think my couch training paid off, too, since my face didn't turn purple swimming in the wetsuit, and I didn't have to gasp for breath more than usual!

Going to go to swim class at 715 for an hour, then the one one one instruction in the pool for another half an hour. Then going to put the bike on the trainer for a 45 minute to an hour high cadence training.

Yep.  It just worked out this way.  The race sites close to me had back to back races and I wanted to do them both.  I'm glad I did.  The 2nd race I felt like a veteran lol.  I had a first timer next to me asking questions, I was like "when I race, I do this" :-)

Wow.  Sorry Wes.  Keep smiling and keep moving sounds good.  The Ann Landers in me says don't freak out either.  Train when you can and you'll feel better.   Train when you struggle to fit it in and you'll feel worse.

Bike rack question:

I just got my bike rack ordered from amazon (spare joe2). I've never used one of these things, so was bummed to read in the instructions that I have to use a strap to hold the bike in place on the carrier, but that the strap's not included. Can anyone tell me what kind of strap I use? And, is there a way to secure the carrier to the car so that it's harder to steal? Secure / lock the bikes in place, too??

thanks!

Thanks.  I didn't eat the yogurt or drink the Koolaid dut I did stay in my bother-in-laws camper.  I was alone, no phone, tv, internet.  I was disconnected from life.

Thanks Mike. Training right now seems to help me focus and temporarily put my mind at ease. I read somewhere training is a lot like life. There will be times it will be hard to push thru it and others times it feels good.  Ironic that life is hard and training feels good

Who'd have thought? that to be true?  On the grand scale of coping mechanisms and vices, I'm pretty sure training would top my list of good ones.  I can only hope that I someday I'll turn to training instead of 5 Guys and Carvel/Dairy Queen.

Best of luck with everything, Wes.  It sounds like you've got alot on your plate but you'e handling it well, plus you've got some baby Ghoulies rooting for you here!

I still have Dairy Queen but its usually after riding 40 plus miles. Looking forward to Saturday where I plan on 65+ miles on the bike. Dairy Queen will taste real good after that.  I really appreciate everyone's support. Don't know how to say "thank you" enough really. I know everyone gets knocked down in life, its how quick we get back up and what we do after being knocked down that will make the difference in the recovery. I have known about the job thing for a little while and there is still a chance I may not lose mine. Wake up call was when a good friend is being laid off after months of being told that her job was safe. The separation though it hurts is probably best in the long run. There are demons there that are caused by a previous relationship that need to be exorcised before another relationship can start.  You have to finish the chapter you are on before you can start a new.

Mike you were #5 out of 12 in your Age group for your second triathlon. For me that's impressive. I waddle closer to the back of the group so any one that can even watch the front runners is impressive to me. I look forward to meeting BigR in Sept. We have food for thought of meeting again next year for a HIM. Nothing concrete but hey who knows. I think meeting others from this forum that have the same goals is neat.  I love to travel so meeting others this way makes the journey that much more interesting.
