Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I've had a very busy week this last week and haven't checked in here much in the past few days. I'll catch up this weekend. Just got back from a nice 2 hour bike ride. The weather here has been very cold (for AZ) with the lows being in the 20's. I know that isn't bad compared to what everyone else deals with but for us it stinks. I lost some plants on my yard and my large tree in my front yard got scorched pretty bad. Hopefully it will come back because i don't even want to know how much it would be to replace it. I've actually been doing pretty well with my training over the past few weeks. After I got stuck working a ton of overtime in January, I seem to be back on track. I'll start to get into my large volume training in about 3 weeks I guess. I have a 9 mile trail run tomorrow that has 2 mile of that at a pretty good elevation. It should be a good test for me. I hope everyone else is shoveled out and thawed out from the cold blast this last week. 9 weeks until my HIM. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Fred Doucette - 2011-02-05 12:40 PM OK 'Beaming Dad' Moment! My 8yo swam at her meet this am. I'm on-call but there was a break in the action so I saw her 4 events. 50 freestyle (all yards) was 48sec 25 back was 22sec! She won her event (2 total heats, 15 girls) 25 breast was 28 sec. which won her heat but not overall. Very, VERY proud! ![]() Fred-that's great! I'll have to admit that some of my fondest memories over the past 10 years have been watching my children compete in various events. Not necessarily when they won but when they achieved something that they had worked hard toward. Although, it is special when they win... |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hard to believe this (link is from Drudge): http://www.myfoxny.com/dpps/sports/world--record-365-marathons-365-days-dpgonc-20110205-jd_11748778 Apparently some 49 yo guy ran 26.2 miles each day for a year. The ones I could find on athlinks varied from 3:30 to 4:16. I'm impressed. Another piece of evidence to show that his/the body can still recover pretty well at age 49. ETA: Just realized that he also has the record with 20 IM's in a year. Which do you think would be harder? Gotta be the marathons imo. Edited by wiky 2011-02-05 6:00 PM |

Thanks, it was pretty cool! In some important ways, I think it's more exciting to watch your kids race than to race your self. It has not changed for me as they have gotten older. My son, 17, was running the mile at a big indoor track meet today in Johnson City, Tennessee. I could not go up for it but I had my wife call me before the race started and give me a rolling commentary from start to finish. Hated that I could not be there but I was anxious all morning knowing that he was excited about competing and hoping to do well. One of the great things about my work is the flexibility that has allowed me to attend most all of my children's events over the years. Although, there were some middle school soccer games in cold driving rain where I was probably less than an enthusiastic parent/fan. Randy |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks for your thoughts. My primary goals for nutrition/weight loss are based on fueling my body properly for recovery and training. Yes, I would love to get rid of the extra 10 pounds that showed up over the last few months. When we sat down and looked at problem areas in training last year illness and recovery were at the top of the list. I'm trying to eliminate as many things as I can that contribute to lack of consistency with training. My daily diet is horrible. It has to have an effect on my training and recovery. It seems pointless to put in so many hard hours of training and sabotage them with a poor diet. I have more thoughts on the topic in my blog if anyone is interested. |

Champion![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Fred Doucette - 2011-02-06 1:06 PM [ Weight nutrition and meal planning are tough discussions! I have the following vague 'Philosophies': 1. We all have a set-point weight where when we get below this our body is not happy. For me that is somewhere from 155-160lbs. Tempting to get lighter and I see it often discussed in the IMLP thread where people are talking about losing 25+ lbs prior to their IM. This is often un-realistic for most of us. I always try to remember that too much of a weight loss goal leads to frustration. It can also lead to getting sick more often if the weight is lost too quickly. Lastly, bike power will be sacrificed when weight is lost as part of that loss is muscle. My advice is set modest weight loss goals. I find my body set point changes slightly from year to year. Last couple years it has gone up about 2 pounds a year. When there maintaining is easier. 2. Nutrition. I also see a lot of new and old diets being tried on BT. Paleo, south beach and on and on. I always ask the question? Is it sustainable? ie; when you've lost the weight can you really keep to the diet that got you there? Many times the answer is no and the weight comes back on. I have tried many different types of diets since I started losing weight in 2003. Basically what I eat is similar but I just tweak it. When I drop weight if I'm more strict and eat more black and white I'm more successful at dropping weight. I can do something pretty strict and lose weight over 2-3 months then go back to more relaxed and maintain. I did Paleo last year for 12 weeks and lost 15 pounds...then maintained over surgery/IM training. I do better when I eat black and white not grey. Black and white means I follow rules and never break them so there is no wishy washy thinking in my head it's simple...if it's xxx I don't eat it and in time saying no is second nature and easy. Yet is it realistic to say I'll never eat ice cream again..no. I mostly eat lean protein, fruit and veggies any time and avoid sugar, processed food, white food. Before and after workouts I eat to fuel workouts or recover. 3. Alcohol. For me my weight seems to be dependent on 2 things: Training volume and alcohol consumption. In the off-season and especially around the holidays, I drink a little more and train a little less. My weight goes up. In training season I tend to have at most 1-2 beers a week and it really lowers my weight. I don't drink very often at all. 4. Realism., I would like to weigh about 5 lbs less for my 'A' races this year. I don't eat that great (I just had fried chicken and a pulled pork sandwich for lunch lol). I try to eat a healthy breakfast and dinner and what happens in between is pretty variable. I know me and I just can't be perfect in this area. Lastly, weight can be a depressing topic for many people and it can be tough to talk about. Much of the way people are seen (especially women) is based on their weight. It's a poor way to judge people, but an emotional and complex topic. My bottom line advice? Cut down (if appropriate) on alcohol and bad snacking. Eat healthy breakfast and dinner and be realistic about weight loss goals. I have 2 daughters and am very careful about not worrying about my weight in front of them. They are both at very healthy weights but I am aware of the pressures that are upon them and are only going to get worse. Thoughts? I think the last few thoughts you have are right on. Women, weight, body image are complicated topics. Add in endurance sports where weight plays a big factor in speed it can make it even worse. I struggle with feeling good with where I am. I've lost a ton of weight, kept it off, changed my life in huge ways, but on some level I am not satisfied and want to be a bit lighter. I'm not sure if it is my body or my mind that is the issue with accomplishing what I'd like. I don't think I have unreal expectations. Accepting where you are and working to make small changes work for many. I do better making big changes and following rules. I do especially well when in a competition/challenge of stuff as it helps motivate me to stay the course. I do best with my weight when I train about 10 hours a week or more. At about 14-15 hours a week I can be more free what I can eat and maintain my weight or eat similar and slowly lose weight. Part of the appeal of Ironmans is the training required helps me stay motivated, focused on training enough to keep my weight even. |

Champion![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Weather is warmer here high of about 40, snow and ice is melting, I think I may venture outside on my cross bike tomorrow. We are going to Vegas for a few days later in the week. I've found a bike shop that rents bikes. The day Kevin has meetings all day I think I may rent a road bike and go ride out to the Red Rock park. We have one free day and are considering renting mountain bikes and go explore. Someone on BT may meet up with us and be our guide. It is pretty neat feature about BT almost anywhere we go we 'know' a BTer who can give us some pointers from a local perspective. Today I swam and was able to do full lengths of the pool with all left breathing..progress in small baby steps. |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Kathy, Nice work breathing on the left. It is 72 here today and we're wearing shorts. Yesterday it was in the 30's. We're supposed to be warm for a few days and then drop back down into 30's-40's. Gotta love Texas weather. ![]() |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good job Kathy. I can't provide much insight regarding nutrition. I do pretty well during the week. Bagel and myoplex protein shake for breakfast, peanut butter crackers for snack, turkey sandwich and another shake at lunch, apple mid afternoon and dinner with the family. My problem is after dinner. I have a sweet tooth and I understand that I will eat something sweet so I try to have something in the house to satisfy that without too many calories. Lately I've been eating "Skinny Cow" ice cream sandwiches only 140 calories and really good. Problem is my daughter loves to bake cookies at night and I cant eat just one freshly baked chocolate chip cookie-usually I do good if I can keep it in single figures Fortunately, I am a pretty plain eater. Not much on sauces or condiments so that helps. I'll have a few glasses of red wine each week and an occassional bourbon and water but I try to watch the alcohol intake. My weight stays pretty consistent. About 172 during the off season and down to 165-167 when in peak training. For race/training nutrition I have been using Accelerade (about 65% strength) and Accel Gels. They seem to work for me so I really have not tried much else. Wow, where did the weekend go. Hope everyone has a good week. Randy

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Did the epic 9 mile run before the Super Bowl this morning. Professional Lewis Elliot hosted this run and the turnout was great. About 40+ people did the 7 mile rolling hill run with 2 miles of steep climbing at the end. There were a few people that did loops for 17 miles total in just over 2 hours. I opted for the one loop and that was just right for me. I had a ton of fun and met a lot of local people that I had only chatted with online. The views from the mountainous section were beautiful too. Here are a couple of pictures from our run. Obviously, I run much slower than almost everyone in the picture below. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Fred Doucette - 2011-02-07 8:55 AM Joe, Todd is a photographer by profession. He takes incredible pictures! Thanks! Just finished 500 watt bike intervals. Wowzers. I can't even imagine 500 watts. I hit 300 a couple of times last week but that was crazy. How long do you hold 500? |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Just under 9 weeks to go until my 1st HIM. I'm going to be upping the bike miles over the nxet couple of weeks and I want to peak at about 70 miles for my long ride. Does this sound about right? I'm also going to start to transition into some calories in my bottle as well as some solid food on the bike. I haven't decided the exact mix yet but I'm going to try infinit since a lot of people like that. I just need to make sure that I have enough electrolyte and salt replacement since I'm a salty sweater. On the run, I'm planning on just sticking to sports drink at aid stations and gu's that I'll carry on me as well as a bottle of water that I'll carry. I think I'm going to go with an all run strategy instead of a run/walk that I did with my wife. I can just adjust speed to keep moving. I really need to up my swim over the next 2 months and in early March, start to get some open water swims in. The water will still be a little cold but I think I can handle it. Any other advice that any of you have would be greatly appreciated. I know there is a wealth of knowledge here on IM and HIM distances. |
