Good luck racers.  Looking forward to the race reports.

Todd-thats bum luck on the HIM.  Although, for me the swim is just what I have to do to be able to bike and run.   Hope all goes well and the knee holds up.

Yep - I'd certainly take a 5km run over a 1.9km swim anyday!  But I know Todd's been having knee issues, so not quite the same.

Ugh - not me - I HATE biking off the run! That is probably the number one reason I learned to swim 20 years ago - so I never had to do a duathlon ever again! Wink

Hope the race went well today, Todd.

Todd - that "stinks"!  (I guess I'm one of those who enjoys swimming less).  But if it happened to my race, I'd be bummed out, and I'm sorry that happened.  I hope you still have a good race and all your hard work pays off though!

Good luck to Rene and Kathleen too!

I can't believe you guys are doing HIMs and HM so early in the season...I have my first race next weekend, an Oly, and I know I'm not ready for much more than that yet.

Hey guys,

Just back from my travels and catching up on the thread. Bit bummed that it's time for it to wind down but I've learnt so much that I loved it. Thanks again to Fred for the leadership and indeed the rest of you for making it so informative, fun and welcoming.

It's time for me to kick my training into gear as I'm 7 weeks out from HIM Switzerland and 17 from IM Regensburg but I'll be keeping an eye on here and probably looking to joining another HIM/IM group. In the meantime, I'll be keeping an eye on as many training logs as possible as you've all been great!

Fred and everyone...sad to have our group be winding down.

We had a lot of interesting discussions, encouragement and fun to meet many more that share the passion for tris like I do.

Fred you have a great way of encouraging discussion and help us examine why we do things the way we do.

Have a super season everyone! Keep using your blogs so I can check on your progress.

Hi All,

Thanks for all the inspires! I really appreciate them.  The weather on race day was not bad considering what it could have been. It was very windy however which made it pretty tough at times. Overall my performance was disapointing. I wasn't ready for it but still fell apart much earlier then I thought I would. Basically walked much of the last three miles. It was one of two times where I have really felt like quitting. I guess most of us have had those feelings a time or two.

Thanks again for all the inspires!

Sorry that your day wasn't great Kathleen. My day might have been a bit better but it was still a tough one.

So my first 1/2 Iron distance race is over and I am now a finisher. My total time was 6h54m17s. My realistic goal was 7 hours and my crazy good goal was 6 1/2. I ended up just under my realistic goal which was fine. I was actually doing pretty well in the race, hitting all of my estimated times or doing even better until the 1/2 marathon. I pretty much fell apart pretty quickly on it. This was not from a lack of nutrition but a lack of proper training. About 2 months ago I injured my left knee and have been trying to rehab it since early Feb. Thankfully, it has been feeling good for about a week and actually didn't bother me at all on race day. The end of the race became a physical and mental struggle to keep up a run pace. It actually became very lonely out there as almost everyone else had finished and the spectators had disappeared. I knew I was one of the last people when I went by an aid station and they were starting to pack up. But it was those last few of us out on the course that gave each other a look or said a few words that kept us all going. This was the toughest thing I have ever done.

My race report is up and you can check out the times here if you want. There are a ton of amazingly fast athletes here in Phoenix and I get to compete with them. Yeahhhhhhh. Local pro Kevin Taddonio won the race in 3h59m. I thought that was smokin fast.

Three days of rest after my first HIM and I feel back to normal again. I guess I've got that going for me, which is nice.

That's awesome work, Todd! Congrats on the HIM finish and in a great time too

Sounds like you had a really hard race, Kath, but as Fred says - learn from it, grow stronger and kick the a$$ out of the next one!
