I have also used Sparkpeople, and they have a really good program(?) for tracking food--it has just about everything downloaded already, and it shows you the amounts of just about any nutrient/vitamin/mineral/etc you want to know when you enter your meals--so it basically is set on mine to show the calories, protein, fiber, and iron whenever I upload foods that I've eaten--makes it real easy to see if I've gotten all that I need for the day. There is a huge number of recipes too!

Also, eatcleandiet.com is REALLY good, the recipes range from lost of work to really easy to make, the thing is, they are based on non-processed foods, and you feel like your eating either too much, or stiff that is way too rich to be healthy; but when I have followed it to a 'T', I feel awesome, lose weight, AND have a ton of energy.

okay, enough pimping websites from me... I did a 4.5 mile run/walk on Thursday, made good time (for me). I was supposed to bike last night, but my legs were killing me and I was pretty exhausted. I'm debating hitting the bike tonight, or swimming, OR just doing some Wii Fit....nut I still just feel TIRED! I dunno...we'll see what the next hour brings.

I'm not totally sure what my barriers are but the family and money issues come to mind. May have a look at the stuff. I did see one dietician type person but she pretty much said "you're eating junk" and didn't really give me any options that are within my "like" foods - I do like most healthy stuff but her suggestions were too extreme. Anyway I'll try. I'm starting to go for chicken over meat these days, and cutting down on the soft drink(soda for americans) but I still have a lot of work to do.

I'll have a look at the sites. I need to actually organise myself so I have time/money to experiment though.

ON a plus note I just got my longest run/walk to date in. 1.71 miles in 32:05 for an 18:45 mile.

Thanks sara. I still need to work on the nutrition and strength part but I'll get the hang of things eventually.

Nutrition is tough.  You grew up on a family that ate a certain way and there are cultural norms that make it hard to eat healthier.  Add on top of that having a busy schedule and maintaining a budget and it can be hard to eat healthy foods!

Rather than make drastic changes (some people develop their own theories that by eating healthy they can't have certain foods anymore) by taking foods away, alter your diet by adding foods.  If you have a favorite sandwich-still enjoy it!  But, look to see if there's a way to add some more nutrients... like through tomato, lettuce, avocado, alfalfa sprouts, onions, etc.  If you typically have mayonaise on your sandwich, try it with a reduced calorie (reduced fat) mayo or try mustard or salsa or ketchup instead.

We eat a lot of pizza in our house, especially frozen ones.  So, when we make our own pizza we cut up peppers and onions and thrown them on when the pizza is cooking.  Or, we'll have salad with it.

Also, try one new food each month or a new recipe each month.  I never would have tried prickly pear if it wasn't for this "rule" I have to try new things. Keep in mind that fruits and vegetables that you didn't like as a kid, and you avoid as an adult, may actually taste good now.  I hated cantaloupe (rock melon) for my first 27 years, but now I really, really enjoy it-had some today after the race.

What's your barrier to healthy eating?

If you don't think it's fun, check out: http://www.hungry-girl.com/ just watch out that a lot of her recipes are high in sodium.  She uses a lot of pre-made/processed foods.  So, it's nice for people that don't like to cook.  I'm a little pickier about her recipes that I use.  I do like how she uses kale and squash to make french fries.

If you just need ideas for healthy recipes, I love: www.eatbetteramerica.com

Since you have health conditions are you able to see a dietitian at no cost?  I know your health system is different over there, so I'm not sure how to get you hooked up with one.  But, it may be helpful to have a dietitian "prescribe" meals to you if you prefer someone telling you want to eat.  www.sparkpeople.com is free and I've used it for meal planning.

Hope that helps!  Let me know if you need more specific info.

Thanks Sara.  I'll give it a try -- one of the reasons I'm swimming the 1000 yard workouts is to create some of those positive images.  I'm going to try and get out to a local quarry and do some semi-open water work over the next week to build some more imagery.  Believe you 1000% about the mental side.  Know it's a block.  Also know I'll get past it.

Got a 30 mile ride in yesterday and a 4.7 mile run in today.  The recharge time a week back has worked wonders!

Its been a busy weekend so far on this end.  Did a decent bike/run brick yesterday (14 mi bike/1.5 mi run). the bike legs thing took about a mile to get over. I'm also going for a longer run this evening.

Masters swim this AM, and it was the best swim class I've ever had. Did nothing but drills for an hour. then finally were allowed to swim. first holding tennis balls, then just normal storke. I've never felt so smooth & fast in the water. My stroke per length was averaging 14-15 over 200 yards. Low was 13, on my last 25 no less. high was 16. Just awesome. Learned some new drills to inorporate into workouts as well. With the race coming up on Saturday, this is all good stuff

I've also put together a plan I'm going to use over the next 6 weeks (break between races) and now need to figure out how to get it into BT. I have it in excel. Its essentially the first 6 weeks of Don Finks 'Intermediate' Iron Man 30 week plan.

BT keeps eating my posts! Anyway, the link above is to my RR report.  I highly recommend Musselman, so if you can make the trip to Geneva, NY-do it! It's super family friendly and very scenic.

Congrats on the race Sara.  Sounds like you enjoyed the experience AND did really well given the limited training time you put in.

Great work on the swim and brick Mike.

Curt - good luck with the mental block. That's what's keeping me off the bike right now.

The Youngstown, OH Tri was great! My 13 year old had an eye opener...he is one of those naturally "fit" kids, but...learned that you can't just "show up" and expect to have a good day! lol He was a bit grumpy about the whole experience yesterday! My 8 year old did great...last out of the pool, but she is a brand new swimmer (mastered keeping herself afloat in the spring) so it was great that she was able to complete that leg. Her run was long in my opinion for 8 year olds at  1/2 a mile, she walked a bit of it, but her face going across the finish line is priceless! Look me up on FB to see, I have never been able to post pics here for some reason! Once I have my times for the race, I will do a race report...I felt really good! The swim was my best yet, fdthe as far as doing it all freestyle and non-stop, I think my time was really not too bad either, but we will see! I was out of the pool in 11 min. but the lap counter messed up my count so a short discussion, as well as a run to the timing mat slowed things up. I'm not in any running for places, so I wasn't too mad, but jeez...the lady had one job...counting me! She said, "last lap, Laura" so I did it, took off my googles and she said, "you have one, more" Hello!? you said that last time! lol. I had lapped the guy next to me and I told them that and since he was done, they allowed me to be done. Slowed me up by a minute, I'm sure! Life goes on, and it didn't get me down. Bike was ver hilly, but a beautiful ride complete with wildlife. (hissing geese at one point!) Run was also hilly. First mile and a half was uphill and sooo hot! Think I drank 2 gallons of water yesterday!

Oh, and hubby (who did not train) beat me again! The rat! It was a great day!

Great work Laura. Sorry about the mess up and congrats to your kids on completing their races. Love the progress your 8 year old made. Hope the 13 year old takes the lesson of needing to train if he wants to compete again next time though.

Even though it was a rest day, decided to go for a nice easy swim.  My legs were killing me and I figured the water would help them -- good guess / felt great.  Again, went for 1000 yards straight and made it no problem.  First 800 were really easy and relaxed.  Was going super slow, but that was fine as I just wanted to relax.  For last 200 I sped up a bit.  Final 100 splits were:  2:40, 3:08, 3:08, 3:07, 3:16, 3:19, 3:04, 3:08, 2:38, 2:21.  Last one felt like I was pushing a bit, but still had more speed available.  Planning on continuing to do the 1000's and start speeding up sooner and sooner each time (i.e. last 400 faster, last 600 faster, etc.).

I had to miss my training/class tonight. I managed to slip and fall on the tiger pool at work; luckily, though I slipped on the edge, I did not fall into the pool---it was half full of water--not to mention the tigers had used the pool as a bathroom! GROSS! Unfortunately, when I fell, I managed to land on my butt and jarred my lower back, which made my hip hurt even worse AND I twisted my ankle!!! So here I am at home with an icepack on my ankle, being whiny.

I still plan on going on a nice looooong bike ride tomorrow--I like to think positive! I've decided that due to my swimming issues, as I might not know what my actual problem(s) is, or if it will be fixed, I am going to do a duathlon on August 6th rather than the tri I had planned on--its on the same course as the one I did on the 9th. I still plan on doing the Luna Women's Triathlon (sprint again) on Sept. 11, so I figure I can start back at the basics (if necessary) on my swimming and be totally prepared.

--That is, if I quit falling on my butt at work....Undecided

Thanks Sara

Curt - sounds like a great swim

Kate - sorry about the fall. Hope the hip, ankle and back get better soon. Sounds like a good plan for the 6th. Hope you can find out what your swimming issues are and don't have to start back at basics again.

Today a swimming milestone - my first lap with proper breathing - only on the right side (I still suck on the left even when doing the wall set) but I put my head back in the water after each breath.

Next week I should be set to start bike training for the tri I'm looking at. The distance for the mini-tri is 10k which at my current speed should take about 1.5 hours (yes I'm extrememely slow, lol) so I'm using the beginner exercise program to train - basically just works on the "time in the saddle" principle - and then I'll go from there and look at some technique drills after the race. It's a series so I may end up doing more than just 1 event, lol.

Johanne I'm so impressed!!!!  When I started last year, I could not fathom doing a 1/2 IM.  Every time I see one of my fellow forum members tell a story like you did, I start to wonder "why not?".

Congrats on getting the first one under your belt.

Stopped by the Y on the way home.  Normally at 5:30 there's a crowd in the single lap lane.  Tonight I had it all to myself!  Did 1000 yards straight -- fourth workout in a row -- in 27:02.  Splits were 2:40, 2:44, 2:40, 2:40, 2:44, 2:46, 2:45, 2:46, 2:40, 2:31.  Very pleased and excited to hold such a steady pace.

Best news is that I created one of those positive mental pictures Sara told me to focus on.  Several times I felt like stopping and I simply kept breathing and stroking.  4-5 strokes later I was fine.  That's a memory I can and will draw on as I get in to the OWS on the horizon!

When I started last year, I couldn't fathom doing a 1/2 IM either! You can totally do it. I think any distance is quite an accomplishment. Just keep plugging away. I was in the middle of the run and it hit me that I was in the middle of my 6th hour of moving and I kind of cracked up! Who would of ever thought?

Finally went out & ran last night for the first time in a few days.  A 5k which I completed at a 9:08 pace. Note to self: don't go for a run less than an hour after having dinner. A couple of stomach cramps, but nothing too awful.

Race coming up on Saturday. Should be interesting. Race starts at 12:30 PM, and weather will be sunny & 80.  Its on Nantucket, and I've never been there, so I'll be sightseeing as much as anything while out biking & running.
