Jen, do you have access to an indoor (or outdoor) track at the academy or somewhere else? If so, I would just plan on doing a 5K test at a track in order to gage your current level of fitness. Then you could do the trail race if you choose to do it, but for the fun factor without having to worry about your time, or you could skip it like Scott wisely advised so you don't get frustrated, and just do one of the other alternatives you mention are going to be fun.
Yes we do and that was something Scott was suggesting. The indoor track (the one we will be at tomorrow is small). I will have access to it with Scott during lunch time. The problem with a 5k in that is it requires 18.75 laps... That is going to be a mentally draining option but at least I have that option. I may just need to do it. At least it's controlled and no hills! There's also a Super Bowl Sunday 5k here.....might push her into that race instead.

Jen, the laps are not as bad if you take a good music playlist along with you and since it's a controlled environment, it is a good place to measure your progress several times during the year. Chris, great to hear the fox story! That's what makes getting out there exciting, you never know what new things you are going to see/experience! Ernesto, good call on your races (good example for us!) and thanks for the advice on the day before and after my race!

I sounds like you want to do it but you think may not because this and that. I would leave it and do the other things you need/want to do and aim for the 4m or 8m one later in the month. jenputnam - 2012-01-13 10:54 AM chris2533 - 2012-01-12 6:01 PM 10.16 mile run with 12F temp and 18mph winds. wind chill under zero. Picked up pace a little. 8:42 with 142 heart rate. 1:28:20. - Chris, My hats go off to you. Those temps are here but I still don't have the gear to face the weather. The fact that you are out in it is impressive! As for my race. Scott and I have been talking and he was thinking that I shouldn't run it but told me to run it by you all. 1. I want to run a good time to see where I truly am and to get race experience. 2. This 5k is on a trail that is covered in ice up to 15% 3. Recommended shoe attire.. Trail shoes and spikes (I have old running trail shoes but NO spikes) 4. Scott mentioned that if I have a slow performance I will dwell on it and beat myself up over what I should have done different, or what would my time have been with better ground conditions. (I can say I won't but he's right...I will) 5. Scott thinks I should just hold out for another... On the 28th there is a 4M and an 8M race. Either would be cool to do! 6. Tomorrow Scott and I are officiating at a track meet at the Academy. I can go to Boulder on Sat and go through the training (Scott already did) to become a certified official. Otherwise I have to wait until next year, but I still get to go to all the meets here this year and gain the experience. So what do you all think? |

Extreme Veteran 576 | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (third season) - CLOSED My 1st race tomorrow. Very nervous already, feeling confident about the bike and the run but not so sure about the swim. I did a practice run with a few mates in November and hit the water and had a panic attack. Took me 8-9 minutes to do 300m. Went again the next week and managed to control my breathing and not panic as much and did the 300m in 6 min. Tomorrow have to do a 750m swim which I have not done completely in one go as yet so hoping the race adrenalin will carry me the distance. I have no idea on the time of my swim but I did the bike course in 37min this week and the run I'm hoping for about a 23min. Be happy to finish in around 1.20min mark but think it will be more like 1.30. Going to be slight breeze again tomorrow which should keep the temp down but we are expecting the temp in the mid to low 30c's tomorrow so plenty of fluids. Any one else that has a race this week best of luck and as long as you do your best there is not more you can do! there is no use leaving anything out on the track. |

You should actively do things to lower the probability of panicking in the water. 1) Don't worry about a slow swim. The difference between a slow and a fast swim is just a few minutes. 2) Start away from other swimmers on the outside of the pack. Consider starting behind everyone in your wave. 3) Remember you can always breast stroke, back stroke or whatever you want to do. 4) Swim close to the boats. You trained for this. You are well prepared and know how to swim. |

Master 2238 Dallas | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (third season) - CLOSED chris2533 - 2012-01-12 8:52 PM Chris, I'm really wanting to shake the pounds off before March 2nd, when things will start getting easier at work and I'll have more time for training. This coupled with the fact that I'll be enjoying great riding weather, will make for a good start of the season.ernestov - 2012-01-12 4:53 PM After today's run (and yesterday's) I've decided not to race this weekend or next, my body is weak because of the diet I'm doing (calorie restriction, no sugars and no starchy carbs) so I'll pass. I'll keep working on a good base, actually Saturday I'm doing a 70 mile ride with some fast dudes, I need to put work looking at the long term. I love running races but I don't want to run myself down trying to go fast when I don't have it in me. Ernesto, I'm beginning to regret proposing the weight loss contest! Why are you restricting calories as opposed to just carbs? I agree we both needed to lose weight, but we don't need to lose it all in one month. When I proposed the challenge, one option I gave was instead of seeing who lost the most weight, who got closest to a reasonable one month weight loss, like four or five pounds. One thing I cannot do is restrict calories when I'm training heavy, because I run out of juice quickly after the long rides and runs. Actually I quit gaining weight when in the heavy training season, regardless of how much I eat. This way I will not have to worry about my food intake, only quality of foods. My issue after Ironman has been the incredible workload, the lack of training and the vast amount of free meals that I put on the company credit card or that I get invited to. Easy to pig out when you're going to good restaurants every single day for free. Now I'm cooking and bringing lunch to work and everybody looks at me like I'm from another planet; I work for an oil company, those dudes think that BMR stands for Buy More Rations. Swimmers never win races - I have a friend who is a fantastic swimmer and a good runner, but gets left behind every time on the bike. A few extra minutes on the swim won't make any real difference, and if you relax and enjoy it you'll come out feeling fresh for the bike and the run and that's where you can really make a difference. And most importantly - enjoy! |

Ernesto~ Here is the link (above), not sure why the link is not working. If you copy and paste it works. I tried editing 6x with no luck? Hats off to all who work full time jobs, have a family AND juggle training. I had to work yesterday, barely squeezed in 45 m. spin last night (only for challenge!).
Jen~ I agree with the consensus, I wouldn't want you to get discouraged and with those conditions it seems inevitable. Edited by JulDee 2012-01-13 9:12 AM |

If you are not mentally ready for a cold weather race then it is going to be Hell. You can't expect a good race time in that type of race. The conditions alone will cause you to move slower. You don't have the same traction alone is going to kill your time. So, you have to know that your time will be slower and the race is more of an adventure. As for cold weather gear, you probably have what you need already. At 12F you need tights or sweat pants, long underwear, warm socks (I use fall soccer socks), long sleaved tech shirt, fleece and a sweat shirt, gloves and hat. Don't forget the chapstick. After the first mile you are going to be warm. You don't need to buy spikes, I like yaks trax and I have seen a lot of runners put short screws in the bottoms of an old pair of running shoes. Just make sure the screw is shorter that the thickness of the rubber. Personally I enjoy winter races, because they break up the monotiny of winter training, and give me something to look foreward to. |

Horrible doesn't even start to qualify it, I only swam 1,750 yards in 33'24" out of the 3,300 that the group always does and I struggled in the slowest lane of the pool, while drafting. Funny that in May of last year I was in the fastest lane averaging right below 1:30/100yds for the entire set without breaking a sweat. Between now and maybe day 20 you will struggle a bit to get your workout in, the solution is to take it easy especially if you're not used to these volumes. Use the weekend to sleep more, eat well and make sure you back off the pace if you're tired. Thirty minutes does the trick, never forget that. The real benefits of this challenge are yet to be seen for most, they are evident in the last few days. |
