Master 4452 | Subject: RE: Yanti & Salty MAD MANATEES Part 2 -- Full Pod rrrunner - 2012-06-11 9:27 AM I'm still struggling mentally/emotionally with my performance Saturday. I read this RR from a man who did the Xterra sport. I thought I'd share some excerpts from his report. I had to do two laps of the run he describes. Now, I know it sounds hyperbolic, but honestly the 5k run seemed to be continuous uphill, in sand. It can’t be possible, because the run starts and ends in the same place. Logically there has to be some downhill. Trust me, it doesn’t feel like it. At one point I thought to myself “the only reason we biked another trail is because this would be too technical for mountain biking!”. At times, it was very frustrating. Just like on the ride, all I wanted to do was stretch out and break into my stride. Instead, if I wasn’t slogging sand I was jumping up rocks or turning sharp turns. But isn’t that the point of mountain biking and trail running? The trail was beautiful, at times passing along a wooded creek and at other times running along cactus flora. The last bit of the trail was, admittedly, just a long slog along the gravel bank of Ken’s Lake, with a heavy wind, but even then the views of the ramparts surrounding the Moab Valley made up for it. My only complaint is that the water stations were few and infrequent. For the ride, I was smart enough to wear my Camelback. Second, realize that you are taking all that lactic acid from the ride into the run. Nothing new, right – that’s what triathlon is about. But it’s an entirely new level here! I just kept telling myself “lean forward and keep your arms moving”. There were a lot of sandy hills where I was keeping up around 80 steps a minute, but total travel for each step might have been 3”. SeriouslyIt’s hot, it’s sandy, it’s difficult and it is long. And then all of that is followed up by a hot, windy run along the reservoir. By that point, I had stopped sweating and I knew I was in trouble TJ, you started with your head and finished with your heart. When we are doing something that is physically so taxing, our logical left brain tells us that we can't do this, we should just quit, it is too hard. When you don't listen, when you push on despite the conditions, that is digging deep within yourself. That is a testament to all the work that you have done to that point. You absolutely deserve that finisher's medal--you finished!! You can be very proud of yourself. I am proud of you! |

Master 6595 Rio Rancho, NM | Subject: RE: Yanti & Salty MAD MANATEES Part 2 -- Full Pod I really appreciate all of the supportive cOmments. It means a lot coming from other triathletes. My DH and son are encouraging but they don't understand.I am soooo glad I joined this group! In the last couple days I've gone from giving up triathlon to setting my next "A" race. Thanks all.On a less self centered note: nice job Reese and Claire! |

Seattle | Subject: RE: Yanti & Salty MAD MANATEES Part 2 -- Full Pod Well, I had a pretty wild weekend. Ran lots, worked a local 5K with PowerBar, biked some and we got our project funded on kickstarter. We raised 18K in a month! I just need a final push to get me through the next week and a half and then I am on vacation, followed by marathon taper. Phew. Thank goodness. |

Elite 4435 | Subject: RE: Yanti & Salty MAD MANATEES Part 2 -- Full Pod Okay since HIM Cairns I've been so lazy - hardly moved my fat backside at all! so today I need to get back onto it. aim to do a 30-40mins run at lunchtime today, then a 45mins trainer ride tonight. Squad on Wednesday night. Thursday having my hair straightened which means no exercise until Sunday the first day I can get it wet. I think I shall endeavour to go out on the road on my bike. I've mapped out a ride along Beach Road (where all the cyclists ride) - I mapped out a 15km which doesn't encounter too much traffic or stop lights. Then turnaround and come back. That's a nice 30km ride. If i feel good I can do it twice! i would like to do 60km every weekend to keep that in my legs. The trainer I'll use for strength and hills, and cadence training. Running - whenever i do this long bike I aim to run 5km off the bike. New training routine (with no specific event within the next 20weeks) Monday - swim squad Oh and new to Friday lunchtimes, Pilates! Let's do this. |

Extreme Veteran 536 | Subject: RE: Yanti & Salty MAD MANATEES Part 2 -- Full Pod Oh, and I forgot to add to my weekend adventures - fell off my bike from a near stand still! I was coming to an intersection and thought I could see it was clear, then realized there was a rise that a car could be coming over that I couldn't see, so at the last minute my brian said DON'T GO but didn't relay the message to my foot to UNCLIP. Fell over sideways, minor road rash on the leg and a bruise on the heel of my hand. I knew the first fall would happen sooner or later, just very glad I didn't get hurt and I was with a group of other cyclists so I wasn't just lying in the road alone. And surprisingly no one laughed at me, because I think it probably was funny just watching me keel over. |

Just went for a swim--felt comfortable for the first time in a few weeks. Breathing was ok. Most interesting--I felt more balanced, even on my 'bad' side, then I think I ever have. Didn't feel like I was sinking. Of course it all makes perfect sense now. How can anything be right if your spine is fubar? I guess I was hoping that it would just work itself out since I haven't had a problem in pretty close to a year. I'm hoping my bike ride later will be as successful! |
