3000 meters in the pool at Masters this morning, and I felt pretty good.  It is nice to have time to work out at leisure without pesky work getting in the way!

Several of you have posted about saddles.  That makes me curious - are these tri-specific saddles?  What makes them different from standard road saddles?

I'm going to go finish up my night's sleep now.  Everyone, please enjoy your MLKJR Day!

yay! love to run without my phone (when not on call) which I got to do today, 12 miles

Happy MLK. Hope everyone is relaxing.

So I spent a good part of the morning yesterday looking up half iron distance races. Trying to keep the costs down I only looked at local and drivable races. They are all so far out from Tahoe, I'm not sure if it makes sense to do a half this year.

Thoughts or opinions? These are the ones I found -

April 20th Chattahoochee Challenge Half - Columbus, GA

April 20th - TriCharlestonHalf - Mt Pleasant, SC

May 5th - Mountain Madness Half - Carters Lake (Ellijay)

May 5th - Rev3 Knoxville

June 1st - Rock 'n Rollman Half Iron - Macon, GA

I think you should do Eagleman in MD with me and Kelly!

Is it drivable??? I'll look at mapquest.

(Of course we drove to Madison, WI & back from Vineman, so anything is drivable according to my husband. He's now talking crazy and thinking of driving to Tahoe...)

Scott - none of those races are appealing to me, which is why I'm struggling.

That would be great if you could all do it! Jeez maybe even I could.... only thing is I think race is sold out????

Drive-able is a relative term -- I think Atlanta is driveable from CT.

rizer22 - 2013-01-20 6:32 PM So this Saturday, my non profit is putting on 3 hour Spin Class fundraiser. We have 2 awesome instructors with awesome music, trivia, raffles etc. we sold out all 40 bikes and 4 are bringing their own bikes and trainers, including me. Any other suggestions at making this a fun event? We also had bandanas made for everyone to wear with our logo. Will have plenty of water, fruit, power bars and Gatorade Prime. Should be an intense class, and fun at the same time.

I'll also be starting to work on the 2nd annual 3.5 mile road race. Last year I built this as a first time race (with some help from Kelly) and we had over 250 runners. I was ecstatic with that for a first year race. It's September 15th. Is 350 too much of a reach for the second year? We gave away so much stuff last year in the swag bags, more so than any other short race I've participated in. Looking forward to directing again. So much work, but so rewarding seeing it all come together.

Seeing how well your first year went off, I would be more concerned about too many runners rather than too few.

The biggest down fall of a 2nd year race can be not anticipating the growth and not being prepared for it.  When I have races that are growing (e.g. Hogsback, which doubled this year) I usually cap registrations.  This allows me to provide the best possible experience.  For example Hogsback had 160 runners last year, 300 this year.  I'll probably cap at 400 or 450 in 2013  to make sure that I have the logistics to support the number of runners.

Kelly, that is fantastic advice. I have the space for registration etc, should I cap at 350-400? Thanks for that.

Does anyone know of a good site that sells these pro kits at a reasonable price. I love the bike shorts Cav has on in that photo Kelly. I've found some sites, but none of them have any contact info etc, makes me cautious.

I've seen them at www.probikekit.com.  I think most sites are between 2012 and 2013 versions though.

Cap at a level you feel comfortable providing services (shorts, goodie bags, aid stations, awards, post-race food).  If you were at 250 in 2012, I think 400 is about right.

The other thing to realize is that each race has sort of a natural numbers of runners that you'll hit after a few years and then plateau.  The trick is just figuring those things out and its unique to each race.

The ones on the Omega Pharma website are from 2012.  I think you need to wait a little longer for the 2013 versions to be commercially available.

3 x 800 swim test in the books.  Much more consistent times.  I've really been concentrating on early vertical forearms and driving with my hips.  My arms are pooped.  35 minute run later today.  Oh and I have a half mary this weekend. It's supposed to be near freezing at race time.

What's near freezing in Texas - like 45 degrees?

It's 28 here today, I should have gone for a run.

-13 degree w/ windchill here, too.  FREEZING.

I also have to take a kid to the Cleveland Clinic for the flu today (he's coughing up blood).  It should be good times dragging my 2 year old along in the frigid cold.
