And, I have a funny story that happened at the EXACT moment of the earthquake. My husband was telling me about a chainsaw carving that our neighbor just did. It's a bear sitting on a toilet. Yep! What happens when a bear ***** in the woods? |

Yeah suck it up buttercup, a little RPE never hurt anyone. better yet, maybe you are right, training without the Garmin would be horrible. You have my permission to just hang out and down a few cold ones this weekend. I'm sure it will not affect your race times at all. Have a good weekend! Dirk/Jeff; hope you guys have a great weekend racing together, wish I could join you guys. Haha, you're supposed to feel sorry for me because I'm old and my brain is obviously starting to shut down! Plus I'm sitting here about to start the ride and it's pouring rain. I want to get a ride in the rain though, to get used to this bike if it happens to be raining for a race, so it's all good Don't hate bro - if you're ever in NH you can come to the island anytime. It's really a mini cottage though, not really a house, but it's got a great front yard! Echo your comments on the race. Really want to meet up with more of you. Timberman next year???? |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Plan called for a 4-hour ride today. We've been under a heat advisory, but there were 6 others crazy enough to attempt a long ride today (usually double that many). All of them were good enough riders to do that distance. One guy turned back an hour in. Another left us 1.5 hours in. Then a third guy had to call his wife to pick him up. Two other guys made it back to the shop, but we were only at 3.5 hours. Me and 1 other guy gutted out another half hour and then ran a mile off the bike. I lost 10 lbs in sweat (new record) and am still feeling wasted! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Finally got my first century ride in today yay! It went pretty well I went out with my friend Wynn and we rode out to the eastern most north fork of Long Island, Orient Point. What a beautiful scenic ride. Wynn kept us off a lot of the main rodes so it wasn't all flat but we didn't have to deal with a lot of traffic so that was great plus we got some extra mileage in that way. On the way back about 65 miles into the ride Wynn had a problem with his rear wheel. He wound up with a few broken spokes so he couldn't continue the ride. There was one work zone we passed through twice both east and west on Route 25 which was passable but not very good so that was probably the culprit. So he had his wife come get him and I had to do the rest of the ride solo. It was a little disappointing not to be able to ride back with Wynn. I didn't know the route well enough so I had to pass on a lot of the scenic backroads and take a more direct route back. I also lost out on some of the extra mileage that was built into the route. In any case I did 103 miles in 5:37. I didn't hammer at all today, I used the JRA (just ride along) strategy that I'm planning for IMWI. Wynn is a better rider than I and he was on his tri bike today so there was no way I was going to keep up with him and I didn't even try. He was testing me to see if I'd chase him down but there was no way I was doing that. I used this a prep IM bike ride. He fell back at times and let take the lead as well so he never got to far out of reach. It was also nice to get some hills in as well. We hit a lot of rollers which was great plus we had a lot of headwind both east and west on the route. That made the ride a little more challenging but I think I did well overall averaging over 18 mph with the wind. I definitely could have rode another 9 miles. I also though my nutrition plan was good overall, I got plenty of calories in on this ride I just need to be more consistent when I take them in. Something I need to work on. I also got a 3 mile run off the bike. I felt pretty good after the bike and just wanted to see how I'd feel on the run. Again I kept my pace right at what I think It'll be for the IM and kept my HR down where I feel I need it to be. That all went very well. I actually felt pretty good afterwards and felt like I could have kept running. All promising stuff, even now I don't feel like I rode 100 today. I may not feel that way tomorrow but it is definitely reassuring. I feel like I'm another step closer to being ready to do this. |

I carried everything but we did stop and I refilled two bottles with Gatorade before we headed back. This is what I had total for the bike and the run total time was around 6:15. 4 24 oz bottles of Infinit, 2 24 oz bottles of Gatorade, 2 16 oz bottles of water, 1 1/2 packs of Clif Shot Blocks, 1 Bonk Breaker Bar. I think total calories was 1990. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Obviously there will be a RR coming from this weekend's race but the skinny is that Jeff and I had a great race. We had hoped to go off the TT start together but we got separated before the start, so we didn't have a really good idea where the other was. (Well except that I had some clues that I'll describe in my RR.) I was lucky enough to edge Jeff out at this race but I think I had a couple of things on my side. Home court advantage and a something to create a little more race day aggression. All in all it was a great weekend to finally shake Jeff's hand and put a voice and actual person behind teh legend we've come to know. Great times!!!! |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Junkies- Just a quick check-in for me. I am still training hard, the past 10 days have been a roller coaster.... my 2 year old was sick, ran high fever of 103-105 for 6 days. Doctor's couldn't figure it out, but dosed her up with antibiotics and looks like things are better now, just need to get her strong again. A good friend of mine has asked me to help him manage one of his gym's. The gym needs some TLC and someone with a little passion to bring some members back in. It's an awesome and quiet little gym in town and though the pay cut is significant, my husband and I decided I will do it. I am putting my notice with my current employer and will be taking over the gym in two weeks. Pay cut + loss of fancy shmancy title were the only things holding me back. I am still afraid that it may not be a financially wise decision. Being in the gym coincides with so many of my passions and I know that I can help the gym a lot. I am still training for my first Oly for next weekend. Missed a few workouts the past week, but my goal is to pace myself well in the heat and finish strong.

On my longest rides this year, I have two bottle cages, a full profile design aero bottle up front (44 oz total) and I put 2 bottle in my shirt pockets. At first I worried the shirt pocket bottles would be a problem, but you hardly notice them and I empty them as soon as possible. Sometimes you do have to stop for resupplies though. |

Wow, what fantastic race prep day, both from a physical and mental standpoint. Doing those hills was probably exactly the right thing to do to prepare for IMWI. Rememeber to give those first 6 miles on the run the respect the last 8 deserve! The cake is completely ready - from here on out it's just icing. Stay smart and trust in all the work you've done. |

Wow, glad the fever turned out ok. Those are high numbers. Great decision on the job. Keep us informed how it goes. We spend way too much time at work not to do something we are passionate about, if we are lucky enough to have the chance to have such a job. Money is way over rated in the long run. But it does buy some nice tri bling! ![]() |

![]() | ![]() Ok, here's my unadulterated plea. I just put this on facebook, and I'll beg right here: I'm racing 2 weeks at Timberman for Make-A-Wish. Here I am last year with one of the most special Wish recipients - Meghan Richardson, after picking up the winning relay team's maple syrup prize! Will I have a bottle holder on the frame, a two bottle rear carrier mounted on the frame behind the rear saddle and one front mounted bottle holder on the aero bars. That setup allows me to carry 4 bottles. I also have the aero bottle I can mount between the aero bars but I don't like it that much. I'm actually on the fence on whether to use the aero bottle or go with the front mounted water bottle for IM. If you want to see the setup let me know I'll take a picture of my bike and post it. |

I highly recommend this thing: http://www.amazon.com/Profile-Designs-ACAQUACELL-Design-Aqua/dp/B00... It has been proven to be more aero than not having anything on the bike. There are some drawbacks that can be addressed with some tweaks. I put electrical tape around the lids and made a hard top - they now stay down much better and don't leak out like the sponges. I also tie wrap everything in nice and tight because with the supplied setup it bounced around a little. Another stupid geeky thing is to eliminate the straws sticking up (which believe it or not negate a lot of the other aero advantages) I used a cheap plastic tubing from an aquarium store which flops down rather than sticking up, and I just scoop it up when it's time to drink. I also find having something right in your face helps you drink more frequently, and at the bike aid stations you can get a quick bottle and just dump it in to refill. But nothing new on race day - only use this if you get adequate time to test it out and get used to it before the race!!!! |

I can't remember which one I have I'd have to look. I think it is very convienent to have since I can just conitually refill that easily throughout the bike leg and not have to worry about passing my bottle off. The thing that I hate about it is the fact that it does leak when you hit bumps and sports drink gets all over the bike. I've used the glad plastic cling wrap over the opening and then capped it and that seems to help. You are right I need to take it out on the next long ride and decide on an option. I'm sort of leaning towards using the aero bottle just because it will be easier for me like you said you can just refill it on the go. I'm planning on carrying 3 bottles of infinit and will probably stick a few more in my special needs bag to get me through the bike leg. That stuff is awesome. Othewise I'll try and live off the course for the other stuff and for the run. It's how I've trained. Also good point on having it there in front of you.. I plan on doing something every 15 minutes eat or drink but I will be taking calories at a regular interval on the bike. I will probably set my watch to alarm every 15 minutes as a reminder. |

Another question, at the special needs tent is it about 1/2 and how do you get you bag? Is someone there to hand it o you or do you have to get off your bike and look for it? |
