mav - 2010-02-02 5:04 PM Well today was a VERY good day. I ran 4 miles PAIN FREE!!!! It felt great, albeit a little slow. I was cleared by my doctor to return to work....which I need to do ASAP. Perhaps I will not spend as much time in the pool this month.LOL

Great news - congrats Mav!!  I think I was starting to smell the chlorine from here
I have a question for everyone -
I broke down and bought a new pair of running shoes today after only 7 weeks in the other pair.  I've had 3 pair of the Brooks Adrenaline GTS shoes prior to changing in Dec.  I originally bought the Brooks at the recommendation of my local running store because I overpronated.  Liked them and never had any problems, but in December they put me back on the treadmill in-store and said that I didnt overpronate as much (maybe 2 yrs in the Brooks partially corrected it) and put me in a more neutral shoe - the Nike Lunarglide.  Very squishy, soft shoe!!  Its very comfortable, but after 5 miles I experience some discomfort on the inside of my ankle.  I iced it, rested it, etc and every time I run the same thing happens!!  Anyone  have experience changing running shoes and experiencing similiar problems??>  Could this be the cause??

One way to test it would be take a few days off and go back to the Brooks. If its all good, try the nikes again. If the pain re occurs I would bet it is the Nikes!!!

Have you increased your volume? Changed your route( doing more hills?)?

I definately have au-de-chlorine!!!!!

Havent changed my route/no hills and have slowly increased volume over the last 8 weeks - only change in my running has been changing shoes.  The Nikes also have a VERY cushioned sole - its been difficult for me to adapt to them as I feel like the shoes have forced me to alter my normal stride.  I ran this 5.8 miles this morning and felt pretty good - no discomfort.
Have a good day all

Good to hear Mike. Your feet are probably taking some time to get used to the new shoe. I would keep the mileage on the low side until you're full comfortable.

However, my one concern would be... how long do they expect these ultra-cushy shoes to last? Being that soft, I would think they'd wear out in a big hurry. Just my opinion tho'... never seen these shoes, I can't form a proper opinion.

Good run Mike... have a great day.

Hmmmm.........interesting Mike. I always figured pronation was just the way some people ran. I honestly have never heard of a shoe "correcting" this. A motion control shoe or an orthotic can correct WHILST you are wearing them, but its not a cure per se. I would err on the side of caution here.I say if it ain't broke do not fix it. Why change a shoe that does not give you any issues??But i am glad that you are feeling ok now!

Mav- so glad to hear you are pain free.
Kevin- I just went through that 2 weeks ago with my son.  For him it was about a 12 hour thing.  Hopefully your son is better soon and nobody else gets it.
Mike-  Thanks for the shoe post.  I was thinking about switching brands, I don't think I will now.  I agree if it works why switch.  I'm hoping for a color change this year.  I'm tired of blue shoes.
Helen- nice job on hitting the slopes.  I was able to get in some snowboarding last night and will be going Friday for a quick girls only trip.  Yea!!!

I had a good 1500 yd swim this morning.  Flip turns are finally becoming more natural feeling.  I think I will go ahead and use them in the indoor tri next weekend.

still trying to catch up on posts - won't make it tonight. very sleepy. But, as far as training goes, I finally got a 4 mile run in tonight....and....Everybody showed, Buster, Headwind, & tailwind Splits of 9:13, 9:16, 8:56, 8:54. Goal was 9:00 mm. almost. Love running in the country. No traffic, no noise (except my heaving breathing and the dog running around) Was thinking tonight - boy - if a coyote were to attack me - I'd never see him coming. (no lights) Thank God no wolves/bears/mountain lions etc around me! I would say this is my best "distance" run in a while. No "wogging" which I was happy about, but I would have liked to have seen a better pace. tomorrow is officially a rest day and Friday is to be 3 miles with Sat. 6. Sat I am doing a 5 K race - which reminds me...Friday we are supposed to get 3-5 inches of snow. this could be fun.good night party people Hope to catch up on posts later

I dont believe the shoes completely corrected my overpronation, but I guess the thought was that after 1800 miles+ on the same motion control shoes (3 pair) that perhaps I improved my running gate slightly.  You could definately see the difference when they filmed my stride on the treadmill, and they thought I would be more comfortable in a neutral shoe - bad idea.
BTW - yesterdays run was in the new shoes, not the Nikes.  Felt much better.  I'll retire the Nikes to yardwork duty
Have a good day all-
