I'm just happy to have finally got one going here, but I'm going to stop patting myself on the back until I start to make it soemthing more than one degree snazzier than bare bones. (2) How do you keep consistent weight like that? (3) How you manage to sleep consistently well? I will try to do this sooner than later, but realistically --- you aren't looking at a serious warming trend anytime soon, are you? Any further thoughts on whetehr the HIM will be Door or Racine or Chisago? Are your shin splints anterior (outside) or medial? And what types of exercises are you doing for the condition. (By the way, there is a fancy term for shin splints now -- MTSS, or Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome.) Thanks Steve! My sleep is actually interrupted a couple of times here and there during the 7 hours. The secret is a cool temperature, consistent time to bed each night, no sugar or caffeine after about 6PM, no strenuous exercise after about 7PM (yoga, stretching, and core are fine). Every time I step on the scale lately it reads 120 or 120.5. I have no idea why it has been so stable. I wish I did because I could make a lot of money if I knew the secret! We still haven't decided on the HIM race. Leaning towards Door County but Chisago Lakes is still in the picture as is Steelhead 70.3. I would really prefer a non-Lake Michigan swim. My shin splints were MTSS, medial. I do the following exercises: foot lifts (sit in a chair, feel flat on the ground, raise the front part of your foot towards your shins), alphabets (draw the alphabet using just your bit toe with your foot off the ground and your leg straight in front of you while you are in a seated position), ankle circles (rotate each ankle in a circle both clockwise and counter clockwise with your foot off the ground and your leg straight in front of you while you are in a seated position), and big toe raises (from a seated position, feet flat on the ground, lift just your big toe off the ground). I hope everyone is having a great weekend! Go Pack go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

Veteran 418![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() , Louisiana | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDgdsemiller - 2011-01-20 9:41 AM I have never been a fan of indoor training because to me its easy to stop and go home where as if I'm running outside and I run 2 miles away from the home I cant just quit because I have to go back 2 miles to get home and because my wife will not come and pick me up that early in the morning (She is not a morning person). I really like running outside in the fresh air. I also decided not to take my Ipod on the runs so that way I can get used to mooing at the cows MOOOO and not listening to music since they are not allowed in the races... Ok there are no cows in my subdivision, but the other morning the paper-man (I guess he was a man because a boy cant drive a car). Well he was out on his route and since I was bored I thought to pick up the pace I can act like a dog and chase the paper-man in his car. I tried to bark but I was out of breath so I saved that energy for the run.. Well I hope everyone has a great day. Thanks George George, Great strategy for staying outside and running! I should stop running around the block and do more out and backs, apparently. And you're hilarious with your animal impersonations. I've been perfecting my MOO over the years and can now get the cows to turn their heads. Too bad we don't have too many cows nearby. I'm getting a bit rusty. Keep on chasing the paper man! Sounds like a good interval workout. Kasia |

Well, it depends --- was that five hours round-trip, or five each way? Just kidding! Actually, you are talking to the wrong chowderhead here, because I have done some real wacko drives for races. I could come up with a top-ten list for you, and maybe I will, but for now I'll just mention two: (1) 10 hours EACH way to the southern Delaware shore for a sprint tri (completed in about 1:16) (2) The half-iron in Tennessee, after which I drove STRAIGHT to work; that is, left at 2pm or so, drove with my only sleep being two 20-minute catnaps in the car, and got to work at 8:10. That was an 18-hour drive.......and I spent the rest of the week being a terrible teacher (the kids were happy with so many movies, however!) There ought to be some statistic for a driving/racing ratio that accurately reflects one's mental well-being. The TN adventure was about a 6:1 drive/ratio, while DE was a whopping 19:1 or so. Ack! For you, if it was 5 hours total, that's quite sensible about 9:1. But if it was 10 hours total driving, then that's about 18:1, right? And that would make you about as certifiably daffy as I am! Welcome! ANYHOW, that's a very nifty lottery system, and for a chance to get into a race that matters to you, it all makes eminent sense. When is the second race.....and more importantly, when is the lottery?? And well done with the time for the race; 30 is well within your reach, I would think! How much time do you have between now and the next one, and is that the one you are aiming for at which to go sub-30? Cool beans! |

As it stands now, you are the only respondent to that scenario/discussion point, and seeing as how there were 600 BMP allocated towards it, you may well end up with the whole fortune. See, that's where initiative will get you! I am still searching for that '07 log to see how I actually tackled that 10km-40km-5km duathlon. It can't have gone far, as the logs never-ever leave the house.....so it's just a question of ferreting through xx piles of stuff before it appears. All I know is that form my "master list" of race results I did it in 2:24:14, but that has no details as to splits for each discipline. My feeling is still that I put forth too much on the first run, the 10km, and then suffered some on the second run, the 5km. But I had never done a du in that format before (that is, long run first), and given that it was a race-morning decision to switch the race from oly tri to du, I had no time to work out a strategy. (Or, I was just foolish enough to do the 10km too hard, knowing full well what In was doing!) GO BEARS!!!! |

I understand the committement it takes to drive to those races. I once did the Chicago marathon and then got on a plane to China the next day. I don't recommend it. I haven't done a Du where the long run is first. The only time I have heard of it happening is when they cancel the swim portion of a Tri. I guess a 10K is equal to 1500 meter swim. I would take a run over a swim, any day if given a choice but I am not a swimmer. I use to do off road Du's. They are a blast. The only negative on off road Du's is that the biking can be on single tracks where it is hard to pass but I love the technical aspect of it. Go Bears. (The game of the century) |

The marathon course is not the same is the Ironman marathon course. Steve it is 5 hours each way, but I did get a night away with my husband and I have a son who lives about three hours the other direction who met us there to do the race too so it was a nice quick trip. Champion 10618![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDJOHN - That log book? Still searching.....searching...... My thinking on all this came from trying to equate the idea of "saving legs" for the bike in view of (a) 1500m swimming, and (b) 10km running. As much as my quick thought might be that they are the same, a 1500m swim is 30' for me, while a 10km run on a strong day is 45'-47'. That's a major time diff (whatwould it be, a 50% increase?), especially given how much of the swim is using the arms for that added propulsion. I think I'll find (when I find the log) that I had a good 40km bike off of a good 10km run, and so it makes me wonder t]just how much my legs would be trashed if I had a strong kick (which I do not) and used it for all 1500m of an oly swim. I think the tipping point will be considering the end-run -- the 5km at that particular duathlon, and the 10km at the end of any oly with a 1500m swim and 40km bike. I know, I know --- I'm obsessing about this stupid little fine point. (But with the Pats eliminated......what else is there to obsess about?_ BEARS!!! |

Extreme Veteran 462![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Auckland, NZ | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDHey all, Just wanted to let everyone know that I did the first triathlon I've done in 5 years yesterday! I'm rapt. It was a mini-sprint distance, 300/7.5km/3km. It took me 53 minutes, which I'm horrified with, but it gives me a great baseline to work from now. My placings in the field of 117 were 84th on the swim, 34th on the bike and 85th in the run. I knew I'd passed loads of others in the bike leg, but that's a marked difference for me, so I'm guessing we can call me a cyclist! I came in 68th overall, which was a bit disappointing, but hasn't dampened my delight in actually getting an event done! I've written a race report thingy, but not sure if it has loaded correctly. Hope you're all having a fantastic weekend! Jac |

Champion 10618![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDJAC - Whoa! I GUESS you're a cyclist! That's a realLy, really fine placement -- top 30% or so? Very fine return from "retirement", and all of it will come together as you preogress through.....the season? Is the tri season winding down there, or will in extend into April or May? I have a recollection that you mentioned right at the outset here that you have two triathlons scheduled this year, so does that mean one down and one to go? And if that's the case, plan a winter trip so that you're over here for our summer. This group is geographical diverse, and I'm sure you could spend a few weeks hopping from place-to-place, race-to-race. You're always welcome here! I will go traipsing around trying to find your report. (Any hints on which direction I might point myself to begin with?) (It's kind of embarrasing, but because I'm afraid to veture into the sweet, soft underbelly of BT, I have never posted a "formalized" race report. I always write a report, but where it's postitioned is just in amongst all of the other posts of my most-currently active group. So, the only way I can ever find them if I want to is to go back to the post within four days after the day of the race. I need to overcome my computer fears!!!!!) |

Champion 10618![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDJEFF - Now, a day later, how does the body feel? Any naggings from groin/thigh/hip? I would take it as a very good sign if it's all feeling okay, giving yesterday's 10km and Tuesday's 5-miler. You're pushing some decent distnces there, so be as safe and sensible as possible, which translates roughly into -- listen to your body! With that in mind, you should be fine with the Cupid 5km -- epsecially having your ever-relaible Support System right there with you, step-for-step! I ave to admit to being a bit nervous about the trail half-marathon, but a lot of that is my own fear about creating or even exacerbating injuries by running on sketchy terrain -- which is why I never do it. Yet, JOHANNE and LORI love trails, so there ya go! Funny stories from the Res Run, too, especially the parts involving the women with the cell phones whom you eventually caught up to and passed. Having a rabbit to catch is always good; having a small pack of them must be even better! Finally, excellent job of adjusting your strategies and your pacing, and still coming in under your goal time. It's amazing how many people stick to a non-working strategy just becasue it's the one they formulated. Period. It is always desirable to have a contingency plan, or two, or three, and yet even for people who have those, way too often they will just stay stubborn and suffer with Plan A. ANYHOW, well done on being creative and staying flexible as the race progressed! |
