croixfan - 2011-07-18 10:21 PM Even though it was a rest day, decided to go for a nice easy swim.  My legs were killing me and I figured the water would help them -- good guess / felt great.  Again, went for 1000 yards straight and made it no problem.  First 800 were really easy and relaxed.  Was going super slow, but that was fine as I just wanted to relax.  For last 200 I sped up a bit.  Final 100 splits were:  2:40, 3:08, 3:08, 3:07, 3:16, 3:19, 3:04, 3:08, 2:38, 2:21.  Last one felt like I was pushing a bit, but still had more speed available.  Planning on continuing to do the 1000's and start speeding up sooner and sooner each time (i.e. last 400 faster, last 600 faster, etc.).

Great plan!

Another way to break it up is 10 x 100.  This is a challenge because you have to pace yourself and you get real honest real quick about your speed + endurance abilities!

Curt, for a workout like this you'd warm up 300-500 yards.  Then try 10 x 100 on 3 minutes.  The goal is to be consistent which means you may feel like you're going easy at the beginning, but by the 8th, 9th, and 10th 100 you should feel like it's a little work to stick to the times you swam the first few 100s.  In thise case, decide to do each 100 yards on 2 minutes 40 seconds, that gives you 20 seconds rest for each 100.  Adjust your stroke and speed to hit 2:40 each time.  Then do an easy 200+ yard cool down.

What do you think of this as a workout in the future??

I had to miss my training/class tonight. I managed to slip and fall on the tiger pool at work; luckily, though I slipped on the edge, I did not fall into the pool---it was half full of water--not to mention the tigers had used the pool as a bathroom! GROSS! Unfortunately, when I fell, I managed to land on my butt and jarred my lower back, which made my hip hurt even worse AND I twisted my ankle!!! So here I am at home with an icepack on my ankle, being whiny.

I still plan on going on a nice looooong bike ride tomorrow--I like to think positive! I've decided that due to my swimming issues, as I might not know what my actual problem(s) is, or if it will be fixed, I am going to do a duathlon on August 6th rather than the tri I had planned on--its on the same course as the one I did on the 9th. I still plan on doing the Luna Women's Triathlon (sprint again) on Sept. 11, so I figure I can start back at the basics (if necessary) on my swimming and be totally prepared.

--That is, if I quit falling on my butt at work....Undecided

BUMMER!!! That's too bad you had a slip, but I'm glad a tiget didn't eat you! Smile  I've been looking for more information about athletes that have problems in the water.  Sometimes, yes, it's do to technique and underconditioning, but at our aquatics meeting this week we learned about three genetically-related reasons people drown while swimming.  One relates to a long QT (an EKG can detect this), another is hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (hope I spelled that right!) where the muscles of the heart thicken and the other is a rogue gene and I really can't remember what it's associated with. Sorry!  Either way... definitely check with your doctor that something else isn't going on.  You never know if your body and your brain are trying to tell you something important!

Thanks Sara

Curt - sounds like a great swim

Kate - sorry about the fall. Hope the hip, ankle and back get better soon. Sounds like a good plan for the 6th. Hope you can find out what your swimming issues are and don't have to start back at basics again.

Today a swimming milestone - my first lap with proper breathing - only on the right side (I still suck on the left even when doing the wall set) but I put my head back in the water after each breath.

Next week I should be set to start bike training for the tri I'm looking at. The distance for the mini-tri is 10k which at my current speed should take about 1.5 hours (yes I'm extrememely slow, lol) so I'm using the beginner exercise program to train - basically just works on the "time in the saddle" principle - and then I'll go from there and look at some technique drills after the race. It's a series so I may end up doing more than just 1 event, lol.

Hi Suzanne! Two thoughts:

This week I worked with a woman and she progressed amazingly well when she started swimming with a pull buoy... have you tried this yet??  For some reason she found it WAY easier to breathe!  I also encouraged her to lay her head on her arm when she took a breath.  SO, when she breathed to the right side, her head rested on her left arm (the arm was straight out on the surface of the water) and her left eye was underwater (this keeps your body position in line, on top of the water).

Second... I am a pretty bad cyclist, but I've made huge improvements over the last year because I focused on cadence.  I used to spin my feet around on my pedals 60 times per minute-to a real cyclist, this is painfully slow, but to me it felt fine!!  I caved and started easing up on the tension on my bike so my feet could pedal faster... over time, I've actually increased my speed.  So, when you get on your bike think "happy feet" and keep them moving!  I hope that helps with your bike speed.

Johanne I'm so impressed!!!!  When I started last year, I could not fathom doing a 1/2 IM.  Every time I see one of my fellow forum members tell a story like you did, I start to wonder "why not?".

Congrats on getting the first one under your belt.

If you can follow any of the Ford sponsored stories of athletes competing in an Ironman this year-truly inspiring stuff.  The people who are able to swim/bike/run with various disabilities really inspire all of us.  Last year, I passed a blind athlete and her guide on the bike course and I thought to myself, if THEY can do this then there are NO excuses!  And, at our local triathlon we had a double-below the knee amputee finish the SWIM leg of a relay!!!

Our limitations are in our head. =)  Just gotta have that "Can Do!" attitude. (plus a little common sense, to keep from going overboard, ha!)

If I could turn back the clock, I'd beg my parents to put me in swim lessons!!!!!

Stopped by the Y on the way home.  Normally at 5:30 there's a crowd in the single lap lane.  Tonight I had it all to myself!  Did 1000 yards straight -- fourth workout in a row -- in 27:02.  Splits were 2:40, 2:44, 2:40, 2:40, 2:44, 2:46, 2:45, 2:46, 2:40, 2:31.  Very pleased and excited to hold such a steady pace.

Best news is that I created one of those positive mental pictures Sara told me to focus on.  Several times I felt like stopping and I simply kept breathing and stroking.  4-5 strokes later I was fine.  That's a memory I can and will draw on as I get in to the OWS on the horizon!

FANTASTIC!!!!  What a win:win:win situation!  This is great for you because it's something you find helpful, it's great for me because I recommended it and found out it was helpful, and it's great for people that we interact with in the future who we can share this solution with!

Finally went out & ran last night for the first time in a few days.  A 5k which I completed at a 9:08 pace. Note to self: don't go for a run less than an hour after having dinner. A couple of stomach cramps, but nothing too awful.

Race coming up on Saturday. Should be interesting. Race starts at 12:30 PM, and weather will be sunny & 80.  Its on Nantucket, and I've never been there, so I'll be sightseeing as much as anything while out biking & running.

Mike

Good lesson learned, Mike!  Have a great race!

Curt wins my award for 'most progress in a year'. We were in a mentor group together prior to this one, and he hammered it then, too. Hats off to you!

And +1,000 on the swim lessons for kids. Both my girls (ages 8,11) are swimmers, both on the local town swim team, and they both love it. My wife is a lifelong swimmer. I'm the rookie, at just 1 year in (first swim lesson at age 43!). Wish I'd started sooner.

Visited the doctor today, and the verdict is: 'possible' exercise induced asthma. I told them all the details, and they said that its basically a picture perfect case of it. Then they prescribed an albuterol inhaler to use before exercising.

I have the inhaler, so I will give it a try tonight at training---its OWS followed by running. I hope this works.

Thankfully all the parts that hurt from my fall on Monday are not in pain any longer!Laughing

No I haven't tried the pull-buoy thing yet, I keep running out of money to buy one, lol. Also my form is bad enough that my left arm is too far away when I turn my head to breathe, lol. As to the bike how do I "ease up the tension"?

Anyway after today's ride (took me 41:39 to bike/walk 1.78 miles - walked about half as it's mostly uphill and I can't even handle slight inclines right now) I'm thinking I may do a bit of a "pre-beginner exercise program with it" and do a week or 2 of 10-20 min rides so I can get used to the bike again before I make the plunge in to the full program.

My 11 year old daughter has one of those inhalers for the slight asthma she has. She only uses it rarely, but when she needs it, she swears by it, and it helps quite a bit.

Mike thanks for the "most progress" vote of confidence -- my cardio feels like it, but my speed still sucks!!!  Oh well, I'm getting healthier and that's what matters.

Did an easy ride (40 minutes) on my MTB with my wife last evening.  Turned it in to a brick with a run afterwards.  Have to say that mixing in the rest days / taking it a bit easier some days is paying off.  Time was not great, but body felt really good / feel like I am adding distance easier these days.

Hope everyone has a happy Thursday.

My swim went SO well last night! Was I fast? No; I also did have to stop occasionally to catch my breath, but it wasn't because I was having trouble breathing, it was because I was exerting myself! I think the inhaler is totally helping (Of course it just might be a placebo effect, but either way, I swam AND ran SOOOO much better, so I don't care, I'll take it!!!Laughing). We did run about 1.75 miles after the swim, and I performed better in that as well, with a sub 12:00 per mile run.

All in all, I am very pleased with how things went. Yay!

Tonight, I plan on doing a 12 mile bike ride; I'm looking forward to it--of course, I do love to bike! First, its off to work! Hopefully no falls or other silly injuries today!Undecided

Great job Kate! It's nice that such a simple fix can make you feel so much better. Are you guys hot over there? We've been in the 90's this week. I know that's nothing for some of you that have humidity too but it's hot for California!

Its going to be near (or at) 100 the next 3 days here in Boston. And humid as well.  I have a race on Saturday, and it starts at 12:30 PM. Should be an interesting day. The only saving grace is that its on Nantucket, and the high temp there will be low 80's. The run course is totally exposed, however, so I hope they have LOTS of water & ice ready. At least the beer at the bars by the wharf will be cold

RD just sent a note to all participants to be sure to hydrate thoroughly Friday night/ Saturday AM.

I don't see the weather being a problem since I'll finish so fast, the heat won't have time to catch up to me
