uhcoog - 2013-01-22 8:21 AM3 x 800 swim test in the books.  Much more consistent times.  I've really been concentrating on early vertical forearms and driving with my hips.  My arms are pooped.  35 minute run later today.  Oh and I have a half mary this weekend. It's supposed to be near freezing at race time.
What do you mean by "driving with my hips"?

5 degrees with the windchill this morning and I live in the "South" . I have limits for what I can run in. I can handle it if there was no wind but the wind chill is just a no go for me. Now I have to hope for the wind to die down this evening or it will be a elliptical or water run for me.

In the kinetic chain that drives swimming the movement should initiate from your hips.  It is much like a pitcher getting all their power from the leg drive and hip torque in their delivery.  If you let the core and hips initiate the movement and drive your shoulders/arms through you should save a lot of energy and create more power.

Thanks for that analogy. That fits right up my alley. I will think about this a little more during my next swim. Is there a drill or something you do to work on this?

I snuck in a run over the weekend when it was 43 just before surgery and that felt really cold and I was overdressed.  Since I have not run outside all winter, no need to start now .... plus, the coldest I have ever run is 15 degrees (not sure of windchill).  While I am one that heats up fairly quickly, I don't like the cold ... my jackets make me look like the Michelin man right now!

Sheesh, my kid has the flu or mono.  Strep test was negative.  My house is disgusting....a total petri dish.  We'll see how many others fall this week.  I hope it's not me, because I have to take care of all these sick babies (no sick days for mama!).

Oh yes.  You can start by "swimming" with one arm fully extended (as far as you can stretch out the arm) and hte other arm at your side.  Kick and "swim" -- pretty much on your side for 25 yards then switch arms.  You then progress to switching arms while swimming to get a feel for swimming on youe side and connecting your hips and shoulders.

There are a few decent vids on YouTube on it.  I think from "Effortless Swimming" and "The Swim Club".  Could be wrong about that.  I've spent a lot of time on there looking at swim vids so they all run together.

Just wanted to share with everyone. (For those that do not know, I was diagnosed with metastatic thyroid cancer in 2010. I had surgery and radiation and was doing great until last October when I found out I had cancer in some lymph nodes of my neck. We decided to watch and wait at that time). I just had another ultrasound last week and the news is good - the lymph node only changed by 0.03cm which is negligible. It is considered stable at this point! Yeah!! I have a meeting with my primary cancer doc next month to go over blood work results and discuss the next step of monitoring. Best news ever!!! Eagleman will happen with no interference from cancer!!

And on another front, my husband surprised me and took me to a bike store. He knew I had been researching a new bike and he took me to try it out! I have Kelly's older triathlon bike and it has served me GREAT over the last year and I have mixed emotions about getting a new bike. But I am really interested in upgrading, so my research continues and I don't think it will be long!

Side swimming?! Hate those. Last night I had to do one arm swimming. Not too fun if you don't bilateral breathe too well.

Swimming - what's that?

So I did my 2nd ride on the Adamo saddle, and I've got to say YOWZA!!! From what I've read, there's an adjustment period for the tissue/sit bones. And I know the adjustment period is different for everyone, but what's a ballpark average before I can sit down without screaming? 2 weeks, 2 months? Holy smokes that was painful.

Karen, it has been almost two weeks for me on it and today felt much better. Sunday I was sore after the two hours on the trainer. That was my second 2hr ride on it. I will let you know more after this weekends ride which will be two hours as well.

So last night I thought I would cowboy up and run outside. I hate ellipticals and dreadmills! I tell you what my new cold gear was awesome! I am not sure how cold it was but the tip of the bottle I was carrying kept freezing between sips if that says anything. It was probably my best z1 run since I started training by HR again with my new HR numbers. Maybe I just have to run in below freezing weather all the time haha!

On another note, I paid for three of my fours races yesterday. I am surprised that Setup charges different prices for the same distance race! Oh well, now I have to reserve the hotels and next paycheck I pay for Augusta!!

Are you on a road bike or tri bike? Which saddle?  There is an adjustment period, but shouldn't take too long I dont' think.  If you are on a tri bike, you should feel it as much as on a road bike or sitting up alot.  Other than the sit bones, how did the seat feel?

2 hours on that saddle - WOW! I was dying, thankfully my workout was only 1 hour. But I have to climb back on tomorrow for another workout. Cry

Which saddle did you say you ended up getting?

The other saddle my friend lent me is the Cobb Plus. I want to try that one but think I should stick with the adamo for a couple weeks before swapping again. If I don't like the Cobb I won't know if it's because of the saddle, or residual pain from the adamo.

Yeah Augusta! You will not be disappointed.

And yes running in freezing weather (whatever that may be for where you live) is way better than hot & humid. I love winter running.

I put it on my tri bike, but I was sitting up the entire ride, never in aero. Not sure if that makes a difference. And I'm borrowing the racing saddle, which is more firm than the road & time trial from what I have read.

Other than the sit bones it felt great. First ride was wonderful, last night not so much. But it's definitely only painful in the sit bone area. I'll just have to tough it out.
