Hey all,

Just wanted to let everyone know that I did the first triathlon I've done in 5 years yesterday!

I'm rapt. It was a mini-sprint distance, 300/7.5km/3km. It took me 53 minutes, which I'm horrified with, but it gives me a great baseline to work from now.

My placings in the field of 117 were 84th on the swim, 34th on the bike and 85th in the run. I knew I'd passed loads of others in the bike leg, but that's a marked difference for me, so I'm guessing we can call me a cyclist!

I came in 68th overall, which was a bit disappointing, but hasn't dampened my delight in actually getting an event done!

I've written  a race report thingy, but not sure if it has loaded correctly.

Hope you're all having a fantastic weekend!

Jac

Way to go Jac.  You have one more triathlons in this year than most of us if not all.

stevebradley - 2011-01-23 4:34 PM ALEX - I was always better at "close" reading than at skimming! Anyhow, was it fun/enjoyable/educational to help with the test? Do you take it as a compliment that you were asked to help? That sounds really grueling how the test used to be when you undertook it. Mercy! At what point does any experience like that become more of a mental challenge than a physycal one; or is it really all too tightly intertwined to differentiate?

Steve - It was a good test.  There were 2 adults and 3 kids testing.  they all did a pretty good job and they all were successful.  I was a complement to be asked to help, I was a bit nervous but scoring was pretty straight forward and they did a good job.  It definitely was a different test than we used to have.  Master Hwang ran my first test and it was more traditional than the current testing.  Which is ok I guess.  By the end of my test I was bruised and battered with a broken bone in my hand.  i think the challenge definitely became mental after a time as you get to a point where you go into survival mode, especially when having to spar against 3 other people.  It was an experience.

Have a question for all.

My PT told me that treadmill running isn't good for my hip.  something about imbalance between my quads and hamstrings.  I am working on that but was thinking that maybe I should try running/walking outside... but what would I have to wear????  It is currently like 10 degree F, and I don't see myself heading out until it is at least above freezing but still wouldn't know what to wear.

Also, has anyone tried snowshoeing as a way to cross train?  Not that this is any different from a clothing perspective than running... still need advice!

Thanks!

stevebradley - 2011-01-23 3:50 PM JEFF - Now, a day later, how does the body feel? Any nagging from groin/thigh/hip? I would take it as a very good sign if it's all feeling okay, giving yesterday's 10km and Tuesday's 5-miler.

Funny stories from the Res Run, too, especially the parts involving the women with the cell phones whom you eventually caught up to and passed. Having a rabbit to catch is always good; having a small pack of them must be even better!

I feel Okay today-as in about normal for the last couple of months. I typicaly feel a "tug" in the groin and still feel real tentative about the prospect of tripping or stumbling. I spent the day working on a mini camper I am building and working with my animals, yard work. So that is lots of climbing, lifting and other maneuvers, as well as stepping around chickens and my constantly under foot puppy-these seem to be a better test than running!

It is rare I have really good "pace booty" so it was fun to have a small pack of them

I've never heard that about treadmills, in fact I've heard the opposite that treadmills are easier on joints.  I'd be careful with the snowshoeing, widespread feet could be rough on a tender hip.

I'm not 1005 sure what the Zoomer world is nowadays, but as of about two years ago there were the two solid colors, red and blue. YOU DO NOT WANT RED! Red ones are for people with a really strong kick to begin with, and the further potential leg power to push themselves even harder. The solid blue ones have traditionally been the ones used by triathletes and swiimers with a less potent kick. These were the first ones I got.

The along came the Z2, I think it is, which is a more advanced form of the blue one. It is structured differently, with channel-type things on the bootom which supposedly help water flow more freely past the fin. These are mostly blue, with some white. I have these, too, but prefer the original blue ones.

Whatever you do -- don't buy red!!!

ALEX -

I agree with Gene, both about treadmills and snowshoeing. As long as 'mills are well-mainatined, there shouldn't be anything at all that makes them conducive to injuries. The only case I can think of might be where the belt is loose and has too much "give", which might make it kind of like running in sand. But if you trust the place where your 'mills are at, then I think you are safe to keep using them.

As for snowshoeing, they are great for cross-training for people who are injury-free. But for hip and groin problems, and sometimes hamstrings*, too, they can be problematic. The newer breed of running snowshoes are quite narrow and, seeing as how they are made out of aluminum, and quite light and aren't as likely to increase the load on your legs and their joints. For now, until the hip is all better, avoid snowshoes, I would think.

I am not the one to talk to about what to wear for winter running, as I get by with as little as possible. I can give you some advice, though, if prowling around the two websites below don't give you some good ideas.
www.runningroom.ca
www.roadrunnersports.com
www.nationalrunningcenter.com

For each, just go to winter apparel and read about what is offered. And if you want to get outside and these sites don't help you, then ask me again, okay?

*The higher the hamstring problem, the greater the aggravation potential from snowshoeing, i think.

Glad I could help!

I could handle the Packers winning, but don't at all like the comeback currently being stafed by the Jets. If the Jets win, though, that would be good for G.B., who I think have the stuff to clean up. If Steelers hold on, however, they're a tougher match for the Pack. My 2 cents.

I know you're hurting right now.......but why the hatred towards Rogers? I thought he showed huge class a few years ago when Favre made the first of his several un-retirements. Hmmm.

Are you a big enough Bears fan that you knew about Caleb Hanie? I sure didn't!

That didn't take too long. I'm relieved, and overall -- good riddance, Jets! But as I just posted to Roger, i think the Steelers pose a big threat to the Packers. We shall see!

Feeling better? Has the resp problem departed? Hope so!

Your keys for decent sleep are sensible, and the fact that I don't observe most of them probably explains in part why I sleep poorly. Funny thing, though, is that the night I wrote that I seldom sleep seven hours --- I slept seven hours! But overall, this past week has been like an exercise in teaching a little kid to count. Since Monday night it's been 4, 5, 3, 7, 4, and 6. Those numbers could also make for a good question about mean, median, and mode! But as indicators of good sleep? Uh-uh!

My weight also fluctuates quite a bit, since Monday a.m. being 173.5, 173.5, 173, 172, 172.5, 173, and 175.

The other parameter that fluctuates is waking heart rate. Since Monday: 45, 41, 41, 43, 45, 45, 41. They're all very low, but I would just like some consistency!

You've got thre bases covered with the exercises you're doing for the shin splints. Such diligence!

I was going to say that you might find the Cumulus more conducive to increased foot speed than the Nimbus, but then I looked at the new RRS catalog and saw that there is only .2oz diff between the two models. Asics must've been working very hard over the past two years to reduce the weight of the Nimbus, which used to be quite heavy. So, the Cumulus won't help all that much in terms of faster cadence!

And just thinking quickly here.........
Shin splints are more commonly a problem for over-pronators than for under-pronators, and the Nimbus/Cumulus branch of the Asics tree is for shoes with no medial support. Have you thought about trying one of their lighter stability shoes, such as the DS Trainer? It has some medial posting, but less than the 2160 or the 1160. But maybe, just maybe, that added stability will help with the MTSS Just a thought!

As for weight, RRS has a women's DS Rainer at 8.5oz, whereas for Nimbus it is 9.8 and Cumulus 9.6. Just another thought!

Sleep well, happy Packers fan!

Hope all you football fans had fun today. We're having an unseasonably warm January so we tivo'd the games and went out for a bike ride. My friend was celebrating a birthday so a last minute picnic at a local winery was planned. The winery was midpoint in our ride so it worked out perfectly! Now we're watching the end of the Jets/Steelers game and I'm ready for bed. Since I've been on my laptop, I know the ending Hope you all had a great weekend!

Congrats to all the Packer's fans.  The better team won.  I hate to admit it but they dominated the Bears.  I am very upset with Culter but not surprised.  A diva QB in Chicago.

Yes, I knew about Hanie.  I just never thought more of him than a back up QB.  I don't think he is a starter.  He is a Colorado St guy and did really well there.  He started a game earlier in the year agains the Giants.  I think the Bears lost that game.

Why do I hate Rodgers?  Because he can pick apart the Bears secondary at will.  Poor Jennings (Bears Cornerback), Rodgers picked on him all day.

Alex,

I don't have any facts to support my opinion but I feel that treadmills cause more injuries.  I am done using treadmills for the year.  There appears to be 2 camps when it comes to treadmills.  I feel a treadmill is great for walking or an easy run but I think they do cause problems when you are training hard on them.  Once again, this is based off what I think and not facts.  Maybe its because I can control the surface I am running on outside.  I have a favorite gravel road that I run on and it's easy on the joints.

Running outside in the cold is all about layering.  I was out in 7 degree weather on Saturday.  The wind made it feel like 0 though.  I wear UA all weather tights on bottom.  They are expensive but they are all I need until it gets under 0 or there is a strong wind.  Then I put a wind protection layer on bottom.  On top, I go with 3 layers when it's under 10.  The outer most layer is a wind jacket.  I have a gator, hat, and cheap gloves.   That is pretty much it.

Congrats to everyone that has done a race so far this year.  I cant wait until my 1st race.  I think me and the wife are going to do a 5k on Feb 5th.
Question for anyone that knows about whey protein.  I have been taking whey protein shakes everyday after my workouts.  But since I have changed up my workouts I wanted to see when I should drink my shake.  Before I would do all my training at the gym but now 3 days a week I will get up in the morning and do my running outside and then rest for about 25min at the house before going to the gym for a quick light strength training.  I have read that the protien should be taken no more than 45 min after a workout.  Should I drink the shake after my run when I'm resting for heading to the gym or should I wait until after the gym to take it.  The shake is really good, I forgot who suggested it but I started taking just the Banana Cream with 1.5 cups skim milk, but someone from the group suggested to put a banana, 5 strawberries and ice and I tell you it really taste good.  Also I dont like most fruits and strawberries are one of those I dont like, but I can handle it in the shake. So thanks to whoever suggested that.  Ok as for my input on treadmills, I dont like them.  My legs feel better after running outside on the street then they do on a treadmill.  Well off to the gym for my strength workout.  Run this morning was really nice.

Thanks
George

George,

Glad you like the shake.  That is what I recommended that you put in your protein shakes.  You can mix up the berries but I like banana and strawberries the best.  Blueberries are really good for recovery though.

I would take the shake after your run.  It will help your legs recover and give you energy for your workout.  You can take the shake after your gym workout but the protein will then aid in the recovery of whatever muscle group you just worked out.  Your legs won't get as much benefit from the protein.
