Texas77 - 2012-01-17 7:05 PM Almost 3weeks off the smokes! Just did a solo 5k in 28 min.well the treadmill said 28 and my nike+ said 24:10? I recalibrated it. I reluctantly will go w/the treadmill! Getting better, may do a 5k race in acouple of months. Under 25 min. Would be a good first race eh?

Under 25 would be a great race!  Doing a 5k no matter what the time is a good race.

Good swim and run today.  Just an overall great training day (albeit not very far distances).

Elizabeth- "Can we build it?  Yes we can!!!"

Jimmy - congrats on the 3 weeks off the smokes!  Keep going!

Mike - +1 on that!

Had a really good day of training.  Still ramping up the laps in the pool.  1600M @2:05.

Then went and ran 7 miles (indoor track).

Have been using myfitnesspal.com for the last 3 days and have already seen my eating habits change.  I log every calorie I eat and my workouts and am making much more positive choices about what I eat.

Hope you all are well.

Left - thats how I lost about 20lbs.  I tracked my caloric intake and modified my eating to keep to about 2000 calories a day.  One thing I ended up changing was stop factoring in calories burned during exercise.  As usual I was over estimating the calories burned and under estimating the calories coming in.

Okay, all time for another Gary question (for the newbies I like to post general tri questions to get everyones opinion).  Question for today: favorite brand of running socks?  Biking socks?

When I first started this journey in June of 2010 I found myfitness.com and lost 35+ pounds! I used it religously for the first year! Keep up the good work!

Jimmy - Congrats on the three weeks.

My favorite running socks are probably smart wool short running socks. My favorite cycling socks are pearl izumi (I dont know which type) but I've had two pairs since college almost 20 years ago and they're still working and dont have holes. I love good equipment and PI makes some seriously long-lasting socks.

I'm FINALLY back at work today after staying home with a croupy kid for the last three days and am thrilled to be running on the treadmill today at lunch. I've been on the trainer at home all week and have been going bonkers.

Jimmy - big congrats on staying smoke free.  That's a big feat!

The BowFlex should be just fine.  I know a few friends who use them, and if used properly and frequently, you will notice good results.  Resistance strength training will help with tone mostly, but it can add some mass as well.

Preferred sock for run or bike?  I've been using the Hanes low-cut size 11-13.  My wife doesn't appreciate how they smell when I'm done, but they seem to be holding up well for now!

Got a 5k in today at 10min/mi pace.  Legs felt real heavy and fatigued.  The eagerness and excitement of being new to triathlon seems to have worn off from my body and it is breaking down a bit.  Its just time to get mentally tough now and work through it.  I know just how good the body will feel on the other side.

Good question Gary. My dh is training for his first HM and is very interested in hearing what you longer distance runners think.

I don't wear socks on the bike at all. For running I like descante and jox sox. Odd because one is thick and one is thin. The key though is that both stay in place and don't slip down into my shoes or rub blisters.

For cycling this time of the year I've been wearing DeFeet Woolie Boolie socks and love them!

Running year round I wear Nike DriFit Cushion No Show, they fit just right!

For normal running and cycling I love Balega socks.  For cold weather I like Smart Wool socks.

As for me, cycling I usually go without unless its cold then its my Lin socks and maybe a 2nd pair from a race I was in.  If its really cold I will put a plastic bag between the two.  If its below 35 I ride indoor (its Louisiana and doesn't happen that often).

Running I have Thorlos and Balegas which I mainly wear with some New Balance thrown in.

Was out of town in Boston thru mid-week, which does not allow one to stick to the usual training routine.  I'm off to  the Big Sky, Mt. slopes in the morning for a week's worth of skiing - finally getting some more snow.

Brady ... you must have forgotten to chant, "Gary is GREAAATTT" four times and most notably did not buy beer for all in the group   Once that happens, the clouds part, the sun shines thru, angels begin to sing and you are magically in the group

So the wife thinks five years is to quick to get ready for a full ironman. Am i crazy? I think its plenty of time. She saw the distance and tripped! Said "maybe ten years." i know i havent been the most athletic person as of late and dont want to win the darn thing. I just think if i work my way up and learn to train properly ( have no friends to work with) then i dont
see why not. Any comments?

Not having ever done an ironman, my best guess is sure, probably. 5 years seems like plenty of time if you work-out consistently and smartly and dont get hurt (i.e. dont ramp up your mileage too fast and get hurt or burnout).

Dorm - Have a great trip! Have you been to Big Sky? They also have a great nordic/skate skiing track that you should check out. Its been dumping and we're also headed to the mountains for the weekend. Most of my time will be spent on the magic carpet but will still get a few good runs in.

And socks: I forgot to mention when its cold I just go straight for my smartwool ski socks. They're thick and keep my entire lower leg warm.

I wouldn't put a timetable on an IM and I wouldn't get too worried about it.  Train, do a few Tri's and you will start to getting an idea of what it really takes to train for one and when you will be ready.   You may be ready sooner than you think.  I did the Swim/Bike portion of an IM on the end of year two.  If I had not been part of a relay team I had enough time to walk the run portion to finish (but not sure I would have finished).  Just training for the two parts took a lot of time and I trained just enough to finish those (1:32 swim and a 7 hour ride).

Like Gary said, try not to put a time table on it, but you are right, 5 years is plenty of time.  One reason not to put a time table on it is that life happens and so do injuries.  With that said, my time table was 3 years (it's hard not to think about a time table :-)) and was totally doable for me (a non athletic, middle aged guy that learned to swim three years ago and did my first sprint two years ago).  If I hit my time table I would do a full this year.  As of now I've decided to wait until I can get my nutrition for a HIM figured out.  That said, if I nail my nutrition for my HIM in July I might still try to sneak a late season full IM in. (Don't tell my wife :-)).

Subject: Opinions on Hrm strap needed....m

So I ordered my 910xt and it should be here Tuesday or Wednesday. I ordered the one without the hrm strap though, because I can get the premium strap less expensive than the 50 extra dollars they wanted with the monitor. In doing some research though, it seems people have trouble with the new premium soft strap. I wear mostly tech shirts for working out so I'm wondering if I'd be better off ordering the older strap.

Any opinions?

thanks for any help. I can always count on you guys and I appreciate it.

I'm running a 5K to benefit our local Meals on Wheels program at 8am. Temp overnight is going to be 11 with a 10-15mph wind. That will put the wind chill in the single digits. I usually don't run in single digits but I will be making an exception for this good cause. I hope they get a good turnout but with these temps I'm doubting it. Looking forward to a HOT chocolate when I'm done! On the upside my husbands office is directly across from the starting line so no waiting out in the cold for me! When they blow the gun I'll take off running out the office door!
