Dirk - Good luck with the porch my friend! That's a great mothers day gift.

Good luck to those racing this weekend. I'm heading for race three in three weeks tomorrow. I think that's too many. I can recover, but I can't really train between any of them (recovery day or two, then right into not blowing myself up for the next race!). Lesson learned, I'll avoid it in the future.

Having said that, I'm SUPER excited that the first tri of the season is tomorrow. I did have a few questions though...

In doing a short and gentle brick yesterday, I ended up with a MASSIVE side stitch going into the run... It hasn't really happened before, but are there any keys to managing this? Better hydration would be one (I was probably dehydrated going in), but I've also heard you can end up running hunched when you're running off the bike. Is that something I should watch out for?

Also, its going to be around 50 at start time... Should I wear a technical t-shirt (tight) under my wetsuit or add a slightly less tight sleeveless top in T1? Any thoughts?

John

I get side stitches occasionally.  In fact, I started to get one around mile 10 of the half marathon.  I focused on breathing deeply and smoothly and it never developed in to a full blown stitch.  My advice is to breathe deeply when you feel one coming on.  Don't ignore the early niggles because they might take a chunk out of you.

Ah....good to know!!  Thank you!!!  I'll scope out the bike course prior to the race.

We'll be there on Saturday, as well.  My husband might do the Sprint, however, he hasn't been swimming.  He might do the du instead.  Another friend of mine is going to do the du on Saturday.

Where do you guys stay?  Is Elk Grove feasible?

Looking forward to seeing you at the race!

Yes, Elk Grove is a good choice. We stayed at the Fairfield Inn there and it was great. Rates are $107 a night. It was about a 30 minute drive from the park.

There is also a Holiday Inn Express a little closer and rates there are around $96 a night.

Another option is camping at the park. It was $25 a night last year and we did that one weekend when we were volunteering at an event. They don't have a lot of spots though so call well in advance to reserve a site.

Thank you for the suggestions.  I hope your knee feels good enough for you to do the race.

I have a busy day and a busy weekend ahead.  Heck I have a busy week or two ahead.  I have an abbreviated long run this morning followed (I hope) by an abbreviated long ride (probably only 30 miles, 20 less than I'd like) and then purchase material to build a porch over the back of our patio.  Once our girls get out of school we are headed for Ohio for a wedding and then back again Sunday afternoon.

Next week is a short work week for me and then I'll plan on putting on the porch for the back of our house, officially beginning Wednesday but I'll probably start in the evenings so I can get a jump start on it.  I still want to get some training in but next week is race week too so if I don't hit a normal volume for the first of the week it won't kill me.  (I would like to hit the same volume in the first few days of the week but I'm not seeing it because of the traveling and home project.)

This project kind of came out of nowhere really.  Lis and I were looking at something to put out behind our house to allow some good sitting and relaxing time when the weather is warm and cool enough.  We had something before but the wind destroyed it during a storm a year ago and I want something more permanent if we are doing it again.  It's rally going to be a bit of a Mother's Day gift to her, but just a little late.

Anyway, I'll stay in touch a little over the weekend but I may be a little more MIA than usual over this weekend.

That's an awesome Mother's Day gift!

Recovery week - I did swim Tuesday and Thursday - but still having pain in the rt side of my back. Bike is impossible. Running has been ok - ran Wed, easy 30 min with a few strides at the end - tomorrow - plan on an EZ 7 miles, then jump in the car and take my youngest for a soccer tournament weekend.....South Bend, IN here we come....

Today, saw the doctor, and looks like there is hope - yes, I have some degernation in L1,2,3,4,5.....but, nothing serious ..yet.

The pain is from...shingles...and with some really good meds...should be over in a week.

So....I look forward to riding my bikes again, sometime after 5/20.

Hope all the asphalt junkie's have great races this weekend!

I hope you start feeling better soon.

Today I ran for the first time since the half last Sunday.  This has been a crazy week at work with late nights and I've been eating bad, have not slept enough, and haven't made the time to train much.  I felt great running today with my wife and our dog, but I developed an infection in a sensitive area this week, so my heart rate was quite elevated as I'm fighting this thing off.  It's no big deal so no worries.

I'm thinking I'll write this week off for recovery and get after it over the weekend.  We're making our first trip as a family to the lake, so I'm planning a nice ride tomorrow.  Gunstock hill, here I come.

Good luck with that deck Dirk, I feel a little guilty knowing you'll be doing something constructive while I lay on the dock Sunday.  Ok, maybe not.

Good Morning all! I've been reading posts every couple days but still have race reports that I want to catch up on. Just wanted to peek in and say "hi" and let you know I'm still connected. Speaking of that - do any of you have a Facebook account? Some of us from the last group are connected that way too. You can find me at Brenda Hoskinson Worrell if you'd like to be friends.

I've gently eased back into running and so far so good with minimal knee pain. My new bike fit seems to be a key and I've done mostly bike/run workout combos on flat surfaces (thanks for that suggestion, Jeff). I've stayed off the trails since my DNF a couple weeks ago. My first tri of the season is next weekend and it's a trail run so we'll see. I get to see Dirk there and hopefully Allison so no matter, it'll be good.

I spent the week getting my garden in and doing major spring cleaning. My in-laws are flying in Monday from Arizona and will be here until Thursday eve. Prayers appreciated! I love them but you know how it is with family.

As I'm typing this I know those that are racing today are up and getting ready. Good luck! For the rest of you, whether you're relaxing like Warren or working like Dirk may you have a wonderful weekend. For you that are mothers - hope you get pampered by the love from your families and have a happy Mother's Day!

Like Brenda, I have also been reading the posts and checking in. This week has been a bit messier than average. I've had headaches almost every day (but not today YAY). There was some drama at the end of the year at the preschool job I just quit, nothing to do with me, but I've been taking phone calls and trying to get the remainder of my belongings tracked down. Finally, we are having our Mother's over for dinner tonight so we'll be spending most of today preparing for that.

After all the drama and business of the week I have decided not to race tomorrow. My mind is just not in the game so to speak and time is a real issue as my husband reminded me that he has to work graduation on Sunday starting at 11:00. My training friend and I are going to head out for a longer ride this morning at a nice easy pace which sounds pretty good to me!

Best wishes to everyone racing and training this weekend!

Where did the week go? Good luck to everyone racing today, hope all the aches and pain subside, am hoping to finally get on the new bike today because it is supposed to be over 65, I seriously hate the cold.
I am not sure how close anyone is to Arlington Heights in Il. but on may 24 Chrissie Wellington is going to be there for a book signing on her new book it's about an hour and a half for me and I am definetly going!

Congratulations, Matt! 3:05 isn't "extremely slow" - it's a base for which you'll build better times at future ones. You completed your first Oly and should be very proud. Way to go!!

First off I just wanted to wish all the Moms here a very Happy Mother's  Day. I hope you all enjoy the day and I really hope your families take care of you all . You all do so much you deserve to have a day where your family takes care of you for a change. I am looking to do that for my wife today.

I have been busy since Friday but did get some training in there yesterday. Friday night I got an extra workout having to take apart this bed/dresser furniture my son had since we got him some new furniture and it is coming next week. All I can say is that it was a workout taking it apart and getting it out. The peices were very heavy thankfully we got the mission accomplished with no injuries.

I got out on Saturday for a 90 minute ride and it was beautiful out yesterday. It was pretty windy but that seems to be the norm for me. I got a good ride in but I think I was not as hydrated as I should have been before and during the ride so the first loop around the hood I was pushing it pretty well even into the wind. The second loop not as well. I also had to reroute twice because there were two times where there were dogs running loose that I did not want any part of that. All in all it was a good ride and it has been over a week since I got to ride outdoors with the bad weather and all.

I got back home to get a run in and I really wanted to do 8 or 9 miles but I had to settle for 6 miles. When I started the run it was not so bad but miles 2 and 3 were a major struggle. I have not felt that way before doing a bike/run brick. I had to stop as my legs felt like lead, my quads were so sore. I started doing some major hydration and walking for about 5 minutes and then resumed the run. I was able to tough it out and get another 3 miles in and I actually ran well but my legs were so sore. It was kind of good this happened as it will happen eventually and better to get a feel for what you can and can't do when you are hurting. I was happy that I did not quit and that I got in those three miles when I wasn't sure I could. I think hydration was one problem and going out to hard on the bike was the other problem.

I am trying to recoup today, no training as I will be going to watch my son's soccer game today and we will try and take care of my wife today. I hope everybody has a great day and will catch up on the rest of the posts later on today.

Yesterday, I went out for 34 mile ride on the tri bike.  I decided to make it a shake-down ride for the Oly on June 3rd.  I wore my tri suit, favorite running socks, and planned bra.  (I forgot to to laundry, so the only bike shorts I had was my tri suit. Embarassed)  I, also, put one water bottle on the bike.  I did not put the aero drink holder on the handlebars.

I warmed up with my friends for about 25 minutes in the flats and then I left them.  They were cool with it.  Total elevation gain on this ride was more than what I'll be doing in the race.  My HR was perfect!  I could have easily run 10K!

Lessons learned:  DO NOT wear those socks!  My toes went numb!  Back to the old standbys that I know work on the bike.  Put the aero bottle on the bike.  I have to slow down too much to get my bottle out of the cage.

I'll do the same thing (with the tweaks) next weekend.  Anything else I should think about doing to improve upon my test ride?

It sounds like a good test run to me.  You may want to give your transitions a little practice at least once before your race.  I run through the entire gamete of the transitions during my practice sessions: wetsuit on/off, onto the bike without socks, feet into shoes while on the bike, shoes off while riding, shoes on (no socks for the run)..........  It only takes a little bit of time but it can pay big dividends if placement is important to you.

_______________________

Matt, I wanted to give a suggestion to you and everyone else about the foggy goggles you experienced during your race yesterday.  I suggest using a little bit of shampoo on the inside of the lens.  This should be a VERY,VERY little bit, just enough to coat the lens.  I have been doing this for some time and it is pretty successful BUT you have to watch out that you don't get too much shampoo or when water gets in you'll be crying like a school girl because your eyes are burning.  Another option would be to use tearless baby shampoo.   (I use regular shampoo so I don't have to have 2 kinds in my swim bag.)

Thank you.  I think I'm going to try to go without socks.  I go sans socks in sprint races with very few issues.  I'm going to do my runs without socks from now until the race.  Cycling without socks on warmish days is no big deal for me.

I do want to place high, however, I have not done an Olympic for 5 years so I'm not sure how my body is going to respond.  (I know, I know.....I said the same thing about the half marathon.)

I can't even imagine running for 8 hours! Amazing!

There is a Superman drill in the pool too. Helps with awareness of head position I think. Has anyone else ever done this drill in the pool?
