Did a sprint tri on Saturday.

Swim (500m)- 10:27
T1- 1:33
Bike (12.5)- 37.54
T2- :47
Run- 28:02

Everything was going good until the run.  I didn't cramp or anything but I couldn't get my legs loose.  Felt very heavy and winded for the full 5k and probably got passed by 20 people including 4 age groupers in the last mile.

I was happy about a couple things.  For as little swimming I have been doing the open water swim went pretty well.  I felt the bike went really well too.  First time racing the new bike and had no problem staying in aero position.  Almost averaged 20mph.

kylie_gump -Anyone has any ideas on how to mentally get back on the horse?

I've found that it's pretty hard to have inspiration find you.  If you wait to be inspired to train you'll just never get to it. I had a friend tell me once that the hardest part of working out is getting your shoes on.  Once those shoes are on there are no excuses; you're dressed and now you have to hit the road.  Tomorrow morning get dressed and lace up those shoes.  The first few times out the door will be hard but it will only get easier as you create a new routine.

x2!  I find that if I set out all my clothes the night before and have my workout planned (and written down) then I can get up and get dressed and start before my brain is awake enough to protest.  I find it much easier to work out in the morning because I can use this trick.  If I try to work out after work then I have all day to come up with excuses.

today i did a 550 meter swim i washoping to do more but was ailed by cramps my otes actually were cramping and it sucked...but only on freestyle stroke improvised and adapted to the breast stroke so i would 50 breast then 50free...till i finished...instructors always tell me to be conservative to curb injuries....i did just that thats why i stopped....prior to that i spun very very hard..with excellent form and teaching...prior tothat i did group exercise class....so i did a brick workout i liked it....yea....peace out

karl that was awesome! Very impressive times. For your run, I would suggest stretching during t2. you don't have to stop or anything, but while you run your bike to your spot, try going on your tip toes to stretch your calves and pull your leg back when your putting your running shoes on to flex your quads. I had the same problem my first couple of times and I think it is primarily because of the extended use of your bike muscles right before your run.

I didn't do much last week.  On Saturday I was able to go on a 5.5 mile slow run.  At least I wont have a blank week on the training calander.

I did figure out my schedule for the summer-
June 21- Charleston Sprint Triathlon Series - Race #1
July 9- Daniel Island Twilight 5k Series #1
July 12- Charleston Sprint Triathlon Series #2
July 23- Daniel Island Twilight 5k Series #2
Aug. 2- Charleston Sprint Triathlon Series #3
Aug. 6- Daniel Island Twilight 5k Series #3
Aug. 20- Daniel Island Twilight 5k Series #4

My goal this summer is run focused.  I would like to run a tri 5k in the 23's and get a normal 5k into the 22's.

Whoa, Karl, that's some schedule!  Looks like fun.

I had my highest weekly volume ever last week so I took off yesterday and might take it a bit lighter this week.  I feel like I need tons of sleep and I'm not getting enough right now.  I'm still watching my weight and trying to whittle down to the low 200s by the end of the summer.

I went back to that awesome run store Saturday and swapped out the new shoes I got last month for a different pair.  The New Balance's were still rough on my feet so I switched to a Nike shoe and today's run was A-OK.  I'll get a 4 miler in a few days and if my feet survive that I think I'll be good to go.

Got a little bit of bad news.  My race on June 7 switched locations and the knucklehead race directors never notified those of us that already registered.  The original course is super nice and also the site of my first sprint just 9 months ago.  I was really looking forward to seeing how much faster I am now.  The new location isn't as nice and was the site of my 2nd tri, so I guess I'll still have a comparable.   Then it looks like I'll do a sprint in July and August with a buddy of mine down in scenic Biscayne Bay.  I'd like to plan for another oli or maybe even a HIM in Sept, Oct. or Nov.  I know I can do an oli no problem, but I'm not sure I can make the time commitment for a longer distance.

I'm liking the schedule karl, I'm a big runner so that would fit right in to my training program. How is everybody feeling this week?

allenh - How is everybody feeling this week?

Not bad.  Cut back on my volume a bit this week after last week's big effort, but I'm trying to keep the intensity level up.  Still logging food intake and exercise every day in a continuing effort to lose body fat and weight.  Just happy to feel healthy and injury free right now (knock wood).

Oohhh.   You lift UP on the buckle.... (Anyone else like Seinfeld humor?) Here's a funny for you all this morning.  In the midst of whining about my MTB and making poor excuses to ride on the stationary bike at the rec, which is definitely nowhere near the same, I've picked up on the fact that it's good to have FULLY inflated bike tires to maximize on speed and efficiency on the bike.  So.  I bought a new bike pump last summer (portable one since I was riding my bike to work 3x a week and scared of a flat) and I used it for the first time today.  Yep.  I've been riding on flat tires for a YEAR!  Ha!  Needless to say, my 4 mile bike to work this morning was far easier and more pleasurable than it's been in... ever. Ha!  There may be hope for me yet.  I'm looking even more forward to the ride home since it's much more downhill and relaxing.  Even with stoplights I went 8.6 MPH which is still slow, but about a mile per hour faster than I was ever able to do it last year!

It's amazing how little things on the bike help, from tire choice, air pressure, body position, seat hight etc.  Wait 'til you get on a road bike, the difference will be night & day.

I did a fun event today.  The local chapter of Roadrunners put on a fun (and free) swim-run-swim event this AM.  400 yard swim, 4 mile run and 400 yard swim.   The ocean was so beautifully clam and clear this morning I almost lost my mind.  It just might have been the greatest swim of my life.  Aside from the stunning conditions I felt really smooth in the water today and was passing people for once.  I had a fun, if slow, run.  I pull out my orthotics after my last run and when I packed my gear in the dark this morning I missed one of them.  I decided to take it easy so I hung back with my buddy's 15 year old son who's a pretty slow runner and we just cruised along and chatted.  The second swim was so refreshing after working up a sweat running.  Afterwards there was coffee and bagels for everyone so we took a few minutes to grab a nosh and BS with the other participants.  It was a really great start to our day.  Plus we all have a sprint next week so it was good practice.

Hey folks.  Got my 4th tri tomorrow, a sprint distance race on the same course as my second tri lat October.  I'm hoping I can shave a bunch of minutes off my previous effort.  I'm really trying to psyche myself up for the run.  It's the least fun leg for me and I want to be mentally strong so I can run as hard as possible.  HTFU, I guess.

Yeah Pete!  Rock it 'til you dock it!  Good luck.  Just think of how great it will feel to have done it so much faster during the run.  That always gets my legs moving!
