Okay, I'm back.

I *think* life has gotten back under control. (Yeah, right - HA HA!)

I am having a SERIOUS issue with motivation lately. I tried to blame it on all the other stuff I have going on right now, but the truth is that I've lost my focus.

I think I'm still a little POed that I'm having to re-lose some weight and re-gain some fitness after having the baby.

The good news is that my mom has decided to start working out, so we have our first workout planned for today. Maybe by helping her, I will re-find that inner warrior that has been sitting around the fire eating smores lately.

VC,

Hang in there...I remember not 2-3weeks ago when I started this, it was a drag! Now, I'm beginning to hit my stride and things are going well...It's hard not to look and back and think, "Wow, I could be so much farther along if..." Well, don't think that. Look at where you're going, not where you've been.

Did my first bike/run brick this afternoon...Marcy, I ate the paste!! I felt more comfortable on the bike this time out, so I tried to ride a little faster, etc. Needless to say, did a little walking on the run portion...35 min bike/35 min run...I think I'm going to take a nap, now!!

Okay, I've got two workouts in a row under my belt. WOO HOO! That sounds SO lame considering a year ago I was doing 2-a-days. Gotta start somewhere, right?

Sounds like everyone had a great weekend.  Welcome back Cere!!  We missed you.  Yeah, that whole eating the paste thing really makes sense doesn't it!

This was a hard weekend for us.  4.5 hr brick yesterday and 1:45 run today.  The biggest problem I am having is that I have no appetite.  I know that on Sat I burned over 3000 calories and about 500 today and I know that over the course of the weekend I did not take in near that much.  It's just that nothing appeals to me.  I have to get over this because the weekends are just going to keep getting tougher.

Luckily, the weather here this weekend was spectacular.  I need the tri gods to smile on us for the next 11 sat's and sun's!

Have a great Sunday all.  Tomorrow is a rest day!  Getting a massage

Hello all. I thoght i'd check-in as I have not been on the computer much the last few weeks. I still matained my work-out but I did lose a little focus, especially in the nutrition. The good news is that tomorrow is another day.

The big news is that I finaly got my new bike this weekend and we even had decet enough weather to give her a bit of a ride. We're still working out a few kincks and im still trying to get used to riding a road bike but it feels great.

I managed to get a hold of a copy of the 2007 Kona race. I found it really  inpiring and a great motovational tool. Two images that really stuck out for me.

The first one is of a girl that looks no more than 15 or so being told that she missed the 5:30PM cut-off to finish the bike by 3 seconds.

The second one is of Rutger Beke finishing 897th. Thing is he finished 4th the year before. This year his body just didn't hold up and he had to walk almost the entire run portion. i've been told that when that happens to the pros most time they just drop out. I like the fact that he finished. He said later that he thought that dropping out when you dont have a medical reason for doing so was an insult to all the age groupers out there.

Pretty cool. Anyway I hope everyone has a good start of the week. Audios.

What to wear? What should I plan on wearing during the swim, bike and run...Do you change, wear the same thing throughout? Is there adequate padding on the tri shorts for cycling? The only stupid questions are the ones you don't ask, right?

Hey Mark!  I am so glad that you got your bike!  I love watching the Kona coverage.  It really broke my heart when that girl was told that she just missed the bike cut off.  BT's own Pirategirl missed the bike cutoff at IMAZ last year by 6 minutes.  If you ever get a chance, read her race report.  Makes me cry every time.  She will get revenge this year though!  I agree that it was really cool for Rutger Beke to stay in the race.  Of course, he could walk te marathon in about the same time as I will run it.  You would never see Norman Statler doing that!

No stupid questions at all Mike...what to wear!

Well, I'll talk about two different scenarios.  Your race in Athens may be a little different based on the temps that day.

Scenario one - warm sunny day.  You will want to swim in the same thing that you will wear throughout the race.  If you have not already gotten a pair of tri shorts, you will want to invest in one.  They have enough padding to make it more comfortable on the bike, but not so much that the chamois will soak up too much water.  I would recommend a tri top also.  They are tight fitting so they will not slow you down in the water.  Leave the water, run to the bike, grab your helmet shoes and socks.  Some people go sockless but I always wear them.  Just try to dry your feet a little otherwise they can be a bear to put on.  After the bike, change to your run shoes (if you are riding clipless) and off you go.  Tri gear is designed to dry quickly.

Scenario two - if it is cold out you will want to put on some dry clothes in transition.  Brin an extra towel so you can dry off and put a long sleeve shirt and maybe a jacket on.  I would put tights or windpants on the legs.  Yes, it will cost you some tme in transition, but if you are cold on the bike, your day will be miserable.

Check out www.trisports.com.  They sometimes have some great clearance stuff!

Hope that helps!

Mike, I'll add my take on the question.  This is Steve, Marcy's husband.  You'll wear whatever shorts you are planning to wear for the entire event, starting with the swim.  It's your choice of how to handle the shirt.  I personally prefer to swim shirtless, and put on the shirt in transition.  Yes it takes me a few extra seconds, but I really could care less, since I will NEVER place.  Don't get me wrong and think that I waste time in transition, but it probably only takes me an extra 6-10 seconds in T1. Even so, i'm still usually in the top 30-50% of my age group in T1.  At least I do somehting fairly fast....transitions.
If you have a tight jersey without pockets or triathlon shirt, thats ok to wear in the water, but a regular bike jersey will be like a parachute.

It's weird, and btw - the appetite came back yesterday.  I guess it was just the high volume workouts over the weekend.  We'll see if it was a one shotthing this weekend I guess!

Marcy and Steve,

Thanks for the input...You know, it would be nice if you just had to worry about the swimming, biking and running...I'm trying to remain calm and trying to remember it's my first time...I've been invited to a trial run in Athens a couple of weeks out from the race by a local club...I think I need to take advantage of that...

Mike, everyone has the pre 1st race jitters.  Just make sure to enjoy the day!  don't worry about being the fastest at anything.  Every time you do a race, you'll learn something.  I know that my 2nd race was my biggest learning experience.  I tried to do everything too fast, and out of order in transition.  I just had to slow down and be deliberate.

I highly recommend checking out the race route.  It'll show you where you need to save your energy, and where you need to spend it.

Just remember Marcy's favorite saying

It all comes down to the run

All that means is to make sure you leave some gas in the tank for the run.

Morning everyone. I had a crappy day traijning yesterday (literially) so I decided to make that one my day off and train today instead.

At lunch i went for my run, it was going to be a time trial too. So i start out from work and head on out down this dirt road into a huge cow field. No trees bushes or anything just a wire fence and cows. About a 1.5-2 miles into it, all of the sudden I had to use the bathroom something fierce. And i'm 2 miles into this cow pasture with no cover or anything. I was cramping to bad to run anymore so i started walking back to work. I didn't get very far at all. I finally found this little bush to do my buisness in. Afetr that i gave up for the day and jogged back to work.

The moral of the story? Before you to head out to your work-out, make sure you go before you go.

Mark,

I know the feeling! You know it's interesting that when it's happening, it ain't funny!!! But, after you get somewhere and can take care of business you can laugh about it...I'm sure the local ranchers appreciate the extra fertilizer!!

No it wasen't funny at all. i was in freaken pain!! The whoe time I was thinking "Why didn't I have to go 10 minutes ago?" Oh-well I guess it happens sometimes.

further testament that the tri-training gods just didn't want me to do good on this time trail; I went out to try again today. Well this morning a front went thru. It was beautiful out but the wind realy picked up. At lunch when I went out I had a solid 25+mph wind at my back gusting to 35+. Which means that comming back it was dead in my face. not glancing to the left or right, no straight on right at me. Some day for a time trial huh? Comming back was the most intense 2 miles of cardio I have ever experienced. I had to keep yelling to myself to GO and to KEEP GOING. My breathing was mixed with a rythmic chant of "In front of the other, In front of the other" as in one foot in... and the last 500 feet or so i have to cross an overpass above the Interstate. Now its headd wind AND up hill. I dont know how I made it thru it but i did. My quads are incredible sore but I never walked.

Whew.

I hope eveyone else had a better trainig day than I did. Actually It wasent a bad train, just an incredibly hard and intense one. I feel great about it now.

good-luck all.

Mark

Yeah, I love me some bike porn!  He (she) is beautiful!  Does he (she) have a name yet?  I know it's corny, but my bike is named Cooper because I am an big CNN geek and love Anderson Cooper.  Steve's Cervello is named Candy because she is red and white like a candy cane.

Sorry about the bad experience on the run yesterday.  There is actually a thread in tri talk ot COJ about going number 2!

And those winds...they are terrible.  I did my brick inside this morning and have a swim tomorrow.  Another long Saturday on the bike.  The temps are supposed to be in the mid 60's I am just really hoping that the winds die down.

My nutrition has been pretty sucky this week.  I also have not been drinking enough water.

Can you all believe that January is over already!

Happy Friday everyone!

Oh my goodness, it's February already! Where does the time go?

After tonight, I'll have my first week under my belt. I still need to work on nutrition - it's much better than it was, but there's still room for improvement. I also need to be consistent with the water. I have days where I get it all in, and then I won't for a couple days.

Having my mom work out with me has been both a blessing and a curse. It's good because it's forcing me to get up there. But, I'm finding that I'm not doing my own workouts. Since I only workout with her 3x per week, I think I'm going to use those other 3 days to do what I need to. It's just too easy to walk on the treadmill and talk rather than run. (Especially when the running isn't fun right now).

Have a great weekend!

Hey All!

Care, I know what you mean about it being difficult to work out woth someone else.  Until a few months ago, Steve and I were at very different levels with our training.  He actually had to yell at me (in a nice way) on many occasions that I needed to do my workout.  By slowing down, or waiting for him to catch up, it was not benefiting me.  Well, not the tables have turned a bit.  On the bike, he is faster than me...i knew the day ws coming and was so happy when it did!

You have to workout for yourself!

Mike...I eould check EBAY or the BT classifieds for a trainer.  Cycleops makes nice ones.

Agree with Marcy re: ebay. I got my cycleops there. I did a best offer and saved about $10 off the buy it now, and it included free shipping.

I have family coming in today - wish me luck. I'll have 9 children between the ages of 4 months and 18 years invading me soon.

I wonder if it would be rude to start drinking now?
