Running a half mary after work today after I swam 3000 yards yesterday. How I feel tomorrow should be interesting!

Has anyone ever shipped or had a company send there bike down to an IM or 70.3 race? If so, what company would they recommend?

Hi seitz1124,

On the bike course.
http://www.floridahalfironman.com/bike.html

The profile shows a bunch of 100-120 foot climbs, its this correct or a software issue.

Another question to anyone...Which brand of products will they be passing out on course during the race (ie. gels, sport drink, bars) ?
I'm always reading that we should check the event website to find this out so we can at least try the products in training, but I can't find any info.
Thanks,
T.J.

Gatorade for sport drink (one flavor during the bike and another one during the run) and water; as for gels, I can't remember, maybe GUs? They also have flat pepsi on the run course...

I am not sure that's the same course as it has changed over the past 2 years and this year they mentioned at ST they did some changes. There are a few 'hills' during the ride but nothing I would consider major (I am used to riding on rolling terrain)

This is going to be my first HIM and 2nd tri ever. The first race I did the swim was in a pool. I have not trained in open water and will not have the ability to do so before the race. I've worked on sighting, but I know you can't simulate open water. Is this something to be concerned with or will the moment take over and allow me to swim comfortably? I'm not worried with the distance as I've covered longer in training, but still, know it's not the same. Thanks for the feedback in advance.

somethings you could try:

definitely swim with flipturns, it will simulate constant swimming a lot better. Practice sightseeing; place a bottle or something on the far end of the pool and every few laps practice the gator sightseeing. Finally, try to swim with your eyes closed for a half a lenght so you learn which side you tend to drift while swimming so you can correct it.

I think they were Power Gels.  GE was on the bike course.  Don't forget the pretzels on the run...Mmmmm...

I heard there was a special prize if you ate a whole bag of pretzels and whistled without drinking water.

I didn't see those; but then again I was in so much pain during the run (cuz of my leg) that everything is just one big blur!

The past few weeks my training took a bit of a dive due to sickness and a minor leg injury but I think I am alsmot nback to normla and hoping I can post solid training for the next 4 weeks!

I've been getting shin splints.

I have to say I don't really care for them.

So far if I run on the treadmill and warm up slowly I'm ok, but tonight I ran with my after work running pals and I was in big pain.

On the bright side, swimming is going good.
Riding is getting better.

I need to run, its starting to play with my head.

Good luck to everyone.

Can anyone give feedback about the bike course?  I know it's mainly flat but when should we expect headwind and tailwind on the course and is there anything specific to be aware of?

I've also heard that part of the run is on the trails.  I run in Newtons and was advised I probably shouldn't wear them on this course.  Advice?  Thanks!

Bump,
Training update:

Going through my 2 harder weeks. Had a test swim today, left plenty in the tank (after a bad sprint race swim) and managed 33:15 for 2000yd felt great and that will be my swim pace for the race.

I have a big weekend (for me) with 12 hours scheduled.

What has everyone else been doing?

I had a real "come to Jesus" yesterday here in GA. Ran 11 miles starting at 5 p.m. It was warm compared to recent weather, maybe in the high 70's or so, and certainly warmer than it has been for my run days.

Running over the winter makes it easy to forget how big a factor the heat / humidity can play. I struggled and was a good 5-6 minutes slower than the exact same 11 mile run last week. Needless to say, I am hoping for more warm training weather to better acclimate and a cloudy day on May 18th.

Well after 2 months of sucky mono I am back to where I was before mono - which sucks because that is not where I wanted to be at this point in the season! I decided to go ahead an do the race (my brother in law & husband are doing it too so I might as well) but I'm not going to be able to race it. Just another training day for me, my recovery times from hard workouts are long so I don't want to risk missing out on good training time for IMKY.
4 hour ride in the 80 degree sunshine today!! YAY!

Yesterday I had a 22 mile bike after work, and it was so nice, 75 degrees out, I ripped it 1:12, with stop lights/signs and etc, not bad for me.

This weekend,
Sat: 50+ mile bike with a 3 mile run off,
Sun: 90 minute run.

Looks like the weather will be nice.

Might have to over dress for the run, to try to simulate FLA in May.

Just did the majority of the bike course for the race on the 18th. It was good, pretty windy, but nice. We went out at noon, thinking we'll ride in the afternoon so on race day it won't feel as hot. I think we got in about 50. It was tough riding through Disney since they block some of the roads on race day. We did our best trying to get out to 192.

Hope everyone is doing well!

Just spent the weekend in Wind Lake Wisconsin for the Baptism of my Godson so the only thing I could do was run.  Did two runs on Saturday, skipped Sunday, and ran again on Monday.  Just have to say that the people in Wisconsin are so friendly to runners compared to Florida.  Not one person yelled or even came close to me while running on the road (no sidewalks or trails at some points)  Most cars even went into the other lane when possible to avoid coming close.  So nice.

too bad I rambled upon this site so late.... we were actually riding in Wind Lake over the weekend. We could have tried to meet up for one of the runs. Have you run this race before? This is my first race longer than a sprint, and I am not a strong swimmer (well, not really strong ANYTHING, but the swimming part definitely worries me the most).

Guess I should be a little more formal with dropping in late..... my wife and I, as well as brother-in-law and sister-in-law are all going to do this race. Training in Wisconsin is not nearly the same as training in FL, and not sure what to expect..... Did finally get in a 58.5 mile bike over the weekend, but also had almost 4000 feet of climb, which I am thinking is a little more than what will be in FL. But the heat/humidity isn't up here, so not sure which is worse.... I have been able to swim 3000 in the pool, but don't do flip-turns 'cause when I try them, I end up scraping my back on the bottom of the pool (yes, I realize I'm not doing them right)... running I usually do o.k., and I still have the option of walking.. I am just hoping to survive/finish this race, learn from it, and hopefully improve for the next one - if I don't freak out on the swim..

That would have been nice to run with another BT'er since I have not met another one yet.  This is my first 70.3 and i'm pretty excited about it.  Although the way the weather has been warming up it looks like it's going to be what the repeat racers have been saying...hot and humid.  Look forward to seeing everyone down there.  Just over 25 more days.
