Veteran 281 | Subject: RE: A truly slow turtle Leston, GREAT to learn more about you! Don't worry about boring anyone with questions because most of us are new I always appreciate learning from the answers to others questions. Please ask away! WOW, going from never doing a Tri to 3 in 3 months - that seems like a lot to me, but I am sure you can do it. My first Sprint is in August so I am anxious to learn some tips from yours in May and June. Please keep us posted on your training and report on your Tri's! The swimming is my concern as well - and as I am finding out, MANY people are concerned about this area! Again, keep us posted on any tips or things that you find out. We all should learn from each other. Bryan, OK, this morning I did my 24 minute run (6 min in zone 3; 3 min in zone 2) and then did 30 minutes of lifting (squats, lunges, chest, back and finished with some jump rope). It is now 1:15 in the afternoon and I am "wiped-out." This was definitely more intense for my body, but I don't think I overdid it. I know I will be sore tomorrow! I will do my best to follow your training plan, but the end of this week might be tough since my wife is having surgery (female stuff) on Wedneday and I will have to get our youngest off to school and do the mom and dad thing for a while (darn life gets in the way of training!). Thanks for all your help. I appreciate the tips. If you or anyone would wants to see what I am doing, I am keeping up my training logs on a daily basis (this is still fun for me and I can't wait to add to my logs - I am sure I will get bored of it after a while, but not right now!). Back to work, Dan |

Veteran 123 Mobile, Alabama | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Hey Dan! You're doing so good! I bet you end up the best swimmer on the team. I'm not sure I'm gonna get bored with this. *chuckle* I'm logging my workouts here too, and I'm having such a blast. I've been keeping track of my workouts since last September (hubby made me an Excel spread sheet), but wow it's way fun posting them here! Hi Lester! Thank you for taking the time to tell us about yourself! I bet you have a wonderful family, wtg you! We raised 3, my hubby and I. I miss them somethin' awful. I guess that's one reason I feel the need to "Tri". Hehe. Wow, you sound busy. How impressive that you are pursuing something that is so healthy. I wish I had started 10 years ago. Awesome! Bryan, super help and advice as usual! Thank you so much! I'm going to follow your advice about the running, even though it feels like I'm going backwards a bit. (Hubby was concerned about my heart rate staying up that high for so long.) I've been trying to keep my treadmill work to 2 miles, including the warm up and cool down. So I figure I'll continue to do the distance and run 2 min., walk 1 like you suggested? And I'm up to increasing the distance by 10%. Should I do that after the first week of working out like this? I want to explain my workout week, too. I go to the gym Mon, Wed and Fri with my mom. We first joined the gym a year ago together so that she could get physical therapy (turned out to be one of the best things that ever happened to me), so those days are kind of locked in. Since I don't have a real bike yet, or a stationary bike or trainer at home, I do the stationary at the gym as well as swim on those 3 days. I had upped my swim workouts to 80 to 90 minutes, but I'll cut those back down to an hour. (Did 40 laps today in 62 minutes, including warm up and cool down.) But I need to do my hour on the bike on those days, too; is that ok? I've slowed my workouts way down to stay in my fat burning zone. I also do a water sculpting class with my mom on those days. Basic calisthenics. Very good for toning. The class lasts 45 minutes. And at least twice a week, I do 3 upper body machines. (The workout is in my log.) On Tues and Thurs, I use my treadmill at home. And as the weather gets nicer, I'm going to run in my neighborhood with my yellow lab (she needs the exercise as much as I do, hehe). I was thinking of adding a Sat run... too much do you think? Along with the 40 minute treadmill/run on Tues and Thurs, I do core exercises at home. All that sound ok? Keep up the good work, folks! Go sTRIve! Edited by juanita_etheridge 2008-01-28 8:33 PM |

Extreme Veteran 1338 | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Good Monday Evening All... I am going to start with Juanita and then hit Leston and Dan... Flipper....I think you are at risk of overtraining. I say this because it seems you are doing a lot, especially M-W-F. But I want to think about this some and will circle back to it. I really like the diversity of your workouts. The balance is marvelous. Leston and Dan... Ah the swim...you know when you think about it we have never really swam. We have played in the water so this is totally new for all of us. Here are a couple of tips: Breathing - focus on the exhale not the inhale. Continuously exhale from the time your face hits the water until you inhale again. Part of the perceived lack of air is actually carbon dioxide build up in your lungs. In other words, you are not exhaling totally. This sounds counter intuitive but also try not gasping on the inhale...in other words inhale a smaller breath. Since you don't believe that try this...on dry land, surrounded by air, count the length of a brief inhale, see how long you can comfortably exhale and keep doing this for several minutes...you will find you don't need all that air that your brain is screaming about at the pool while your face is in the water. Best swim tip ever --- RELAX As far as thinking about training or triathlon all the time....welcome to the club. It is an exciting indepth sport...and let's face it, there's something Type A about wanting to do something wacky like this to begin with..... Dan, clear up this for me...you said you did your 24 min run (6 min in z3 and 3 min in z2) I think I am confused on the math...sorry. BTW, I am sure your legs are trashed...you run a couple of miles and for fun then go do squats and lunges....are you a masochist? How about some focus on core, arms, shoulders, back and neck....your legs are getting a lot with run/bike. Life gets in the way - quite often we must miss a workout....folks, this is art and science...not all science...therefore if you miss one workout or even one week it does not mean you will not finish your race....far from it....you just can't bag all the workouts but missing one every now and then is fine....skip it....forgive yourself and move on...don't try to make it up...skip your workout for that week in your best event and be sure you don't miss one of your weaker events. Logs - I log every workout...I use a separate software program...I love to go back a year ago and look at my heartrates....you will be amazed at the difference in a few months....just like you are amazed at the difference in a few days....or weeks.... Keep up the great work...I am so impressed with all of the headway you are all making. Flipper, I owe you some comments on your workouts and will add those in soon. Have a marvelous evening....be sure you all find at least one and preferably two days of this week....have fun with the family...you really want them to like you when they are yelling at you as you cross the finish line.... Bryan, Don't have much time right now, but here is the math on my run: 6 min in zone 3 = total 6 min 3 min in zone 2 = total 9 min 6 min in zone 3 = total 15 min 3 min in zone 2 = total 18 min 6 min in zone 3 = total 24 min This does not include warm-up or cool down. Will write more later. Dan |

Uxbridge | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Hi to All Leston enjoyed your post. I know that you will conquer the water. The first time I went to the pool I tried to swim without goggles. I am suprised that I ever went back , my eyes were so blood shot and they burned badly. It took me a while, and several pair of goggles before I could swim several laps without stopping. My son was a Division II swimmer in college and he was very helpful in giving me tips. He even gave me his college swim cap(he had a shaved head)! Dan, I enjoy reading your posts... your commitment is so admirable. You inspired me to get off my @** yesterday and workout! ( I had almost convinced myself that I didn't feel like it) Juanita, You are a fish. I like to swim too... but I am impressed. If you keep with your running AND GO SLOW you'll be running the magic 3-4 miles before you know it! Bryan and every one, Thanks for all the info on the HR monitors. I havent bought one yet because I decided to try and run without increasing any speed. I sang my entire run today(I feel for the people on my route). I never let my pace get so fast that I couldn't sing or mouth the words like I was singing. I didn't even feel tired. It was a beautiful day today.. no wind...sunny...and 36 degrees. I ran 8 miles today...This is the longest I have ever run and I am thrilled!!!!!I never thought I could do it!. No more long runs for another 2 weeks though( I am following Jeff Galloways/ Marathon-half marathon). I do use a nike chip which is in my sneaker and attaches to my i-pod. At anytime during my run I can press a button and it tells me my distance and my time. I can pre set it for the length of my run and it tells you when you have completed every mile/ kilometer. It can also be down loaded to your computer to tell you your pace along the way. The best part is that famous runners come on at the end of your workout and congratulate you when you complete your own PR. Lance came on today and congratulated me on my longest run. It scares you the first time they come on!!! Today I was thinking about the reasons NOT to work out 1. Its cold outside 2. I don't feel like it 3. I didn't really loose any weight in the last few weeks despite all this effort 4. My house is dirty 5. Its my day off, I should be shopping/ relaxing 6. I'm not getting faster despite working out 7. I have a long time before my net tri Then I thought about reasons to work out 1. I feel better and I am in better shape than when I was 30 years ago 2. I am a role model to my children/ family 3. Despite no weight loss I am more physically fit 4. I can eat more if I exercise and I dont gain weight! 5. I deal with the stress in my life better 6. I'm saving money because I am not shopping 7. I have a road race in three weeks WHEN YOU RUN YOU HAVE A LOT OF TIME TO THINK. I perhaps should sing louder so I cant think so much. I look forward to all your posts everyday. They to inspire me to get off my butt. THANKS TO YOU ALL Marianne |

Extreme Veteran 1338 | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! By golly I think we are beginning to get IT......I am so proud Flipper You swim amazes me...A 2100 yard workout in 62 minutes....I would be very happy with that time and workout.... Your husband is smart...keep that heartrate low. Run...first week can be increased since you have been at the lower rate for a while. Gym - MWF - stationary bike and a 80-90 min swim. Dropping your swim to about 60 minutes will help you perform better on the bike. Mix up riding first and then swimming and then another time swim first and ride after....Water sculpting also...that is another 45 minutes of work and then some upper body weights....wow...that's a long day. I don't really have much to add...you must be there a few hours.....how long are you riding the stationary bike. TT - run and core should be fine...run first then core. I also would consider taking Tues or Thurs off and adding a Sat or Sun workout....that would break up you two off days...giving you two recovery days. Otherwise...looks good for base training. Dan, Run looks good...just ramp up the 10% per week in the same type of ratio....you might also mix up the 6/3 ratio to 7/3 or 4/1.....excellent plan Marianne, Your reasons rock. I would also add that I have never felt bad after a workout. I always feel great after the workout and that makes it easier when I focus on the feeling at the end. So here are some more reasons to workout 1. My heart won't explode in the next 3 years from high blood pressure. 2. The feeling at the end of the workout 3. Getting to acquire really cool gear 4. Learning about something new...this whole science stuff of working out intrigues me 5. I like to way people react when they hear you have done a triathlon 6. The feeling of accomplishment 7. Realizing I really enjoy working out....and the variety 8. The finish line feeling....which EVERYONE in the world should some day experience and about 99% of them won't even feel the starting line...we are truly blessed. You mentioned the working out excuses...not to do it...I think it all comes down to the first step. Once you take the first one, then it is just left right repeat....smile See you at the finish line (now you know where that came from -- by the way, I want each of you to take a snapshot in your mind at your next finish line and your job is to describe that picture to Team sTRIve), Bryan |

Veteran 123 Mobile, Alabama | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Thank you, Marianne! I'll keep it slow. I really do want to get better. You are such an inspiration to me! Nice running, Dan! And thanks for the advice, Bryan. I'm going to follow it as best I can. I do an hour on the stationary bike, MTW, too. I've kept this work out pretty much the same since last August - one hour swimming, one hour biking, and the class. I upped my swimming last week because I'm participating in an online swimming challenge (and it's MY challenge - Mobile Bay), and I wanted to finish first, LOL. (Me competitive? Naw...) But I can't keep up with the 20something girl that swims in open water races in New Zealand anway (she's awesome), so I'll cut the swimming back down to an hour. I have a twinge in my left shoulder from last week and I'm sure it's because I swam too much. Your advice about swimming has really made me pay attention to my pivot and reach. I'm relaxing more in the water too now that I'm keeping my HR lower. Swimming is pure enjoyment again. sTRIve on, folks! |

Extreme Veteran 553 New Brunswick, Canada | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Hi fellow sTRIvers, Been a while since I posted. We had week 3 of our tri-oriented swim class last night. After a warm up we focussed on several interesting drills. One involved swimming with closed fists - really demonstrated for me how important hand position is. Another drill involved pulling with one arm for a 3 count, then both hands in front for a three count then pulling with the other arm for a 3 count, etc. Another drill was to swim front crawl with head out of the water and another was to swim front crawl and while bringing the arm front back to front we were to have our finger tips skim across the water. Designed to emphasize keeping our elbows up. Also did some kicking only drills and an 8-minute timed swim at the end that nearly killed me. Class runs from 8:30 - 9:30 pm, I got home at 10:00 and was sound asleep at 10:00:01 !!! |

Extreme Veteran 1338 | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Flipper, Take care of that shoulder tweak - all of you remember 48 hours off is better than 48 days off. Don't train through real pain. We all have to build our base and build up our workouts slowly. FBP, Awesome on the swim....how far did you go on the 8 minute timed swim? The first one absolutely puts you down...they all get a lot easier....keep paddling. The closed fist drill also enhances your feel of the water. And you also recognize you can almost swim as fast with your fist closed as open. Try this one, focus and relax your fingers....don't press them together...keep them relaxed and a little room between them. You have not changed the surface area at all from your regular stroke but you have reduced the stress in the muscles in your forearm. Again, all spring it is going to be relax on the swim, relax on the bike and relax while running....is there a theme here???? Tomorrow is Friday....followed by two GREAT training days....long workouts for all.....yippee!!! Bryan |

Extreme Veteran 553 New Brunswick, Canada | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! For my 8 minute swim I believe I covered 300m with a combination of front crawl and breast stroke. I'm in no danger of being invited to join the Canadian Olympic swim team but given that I've only been at it for a month and that it came at the end of our hour long session I guess I shouldn't be too disappointed. Dropped by a local shop on my way home last night to check out a pretty decent deal on a road bike. At present I only have a mtn bike. The shop has a bunch of 2007 model Trek 1000's that they are trying to clear out selling at $650 cdn ($1 us = $1 cdn at the moment). Clip in pedals/shoes would add another $150 or so. Not sure how I slip this one by my darling wife though |

Uxbridge | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Hey, just read your post... wanted to share how I got my bike last year. I went to our local trek dealer and browsed. Then I got fitted for a trek 1000. The cost was more than I wanted to spend so I took the measurements and went home and posted a wanted on craigslist (this is similar to ebay) I dont know if they have this in canada. I ended up getting a 3 year old trek 1000 for $325. It fits me very well as I put ther specifications on my post. My son gave me clipless pedals for my birthday ( Now there is a role reversal). Before my first race I got the bike tuned up and I have had no problems. After this season I will probably buy another bike but I plan to sell my trek on craigslist ( hopefully to another BT!!!!) Good luck in your search Marianne |

Extreme Veteran 1338 | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! FBP 300 in your 8 minute swim is not bad...not bad at all...we are very early here....after an hour workout....fantastic. Keep up the good work! Know that form and technique is very important in the swim. If you feel your technique begin to falter...stop...breathe...and the swim again until your form breaks down....I know a swim of 500 or 750 or 1500 seems like a LONG LONG way right now but you will make it. On the bike, Craigslist or Ebay is a good idea but only after a good fit. Don't buy a bike without a good fit. Marianne gave great advice there. By the way, your mtn bike would be okay for your first tri or two...or borrow a road bike...be sure you are hooked before you plunk down the bucks, cdn or us. Marianne, I totally agree on the bike, used, new, mtn, road, tri -- none of this matters without the fit. Please please please - spend a little money at your LBS (local bike shop) and get fit. You will enjoy the ride about a trillion times more....If you already own a bike they will probably fit it to you and adjust it....if not, it should be part of a new purchase...or you can just pay for the fit and get your measurements. I haven't bought a bike online...I may be too chicken...plus I really tri to support local independent businesses as much as I possibly can....although not at a significant upcharge....there is only so many dollars to go around. Again, excellent ideas and thoughts...go turtles go....sTRIve for greatness.... two excellent training days coming...followed by 5 more....a good training day equals a day that ends in "y"....smile B |

My wife came home from the hospital yesterday and I am still helping as much as I can and our daughter had a basketball game, so when I finally settled in around 3:00 this afternoon I was really ready for an afternoon nap, but knowing I only posted a small workout yesterday, my wife gave permission for me to make it to the gym. If I didn't have to post my workout, I probably would have skipped the workout, but I didn't want to disappoint this group, so I made it to the gym, biked for 30 minutes and ran for 24. It is now about 3 hours later and my legs are mush, but I really feel good!!! Thank you for being here. I appreciate everyone's support and motivation. FBP, 300 meters in 8 minutes!! WOW, I am impressed. I hope to get there soon. Keep up the GREAT work. Will write more later. Dan |

Master 2042 Albany, NY | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Wow Dan, I'm impressed too! And feeling horribly guilty... I have been a complete slacker for a whole week. I definitely used every excuse in the book... My husband had surgery on his foot last week and needless to say, he can't help a lot around the house or taking care of my 1 and 3 year old girls! At first my excuse was that I couldn't leave him with the girls - I tried to get out a bit day #2 after his surgery while the girls were napping figuring that was safe. I ran 45 minutes outside... Came home and they BOTH had woken up way early and the poor guy had to crawl up the stairs and down the hallway to their rooms. I felt so guilty I was afraid to leave him again! So that left my work gym (that at least has a treadmill)... So then Monday afternoon we had a fire at work. Needless to say the gym is out of commission for a while. And then I had a sinus infection... What are the chances of all of this in a week? But today I vowed to come out of my slacker slump and went to spin class (had to bribe the kids to be nice to Daddy). We climbed an awesome "hill" and it felt great (in a "good pain" kind of way). Plan to run tomorrow. Have to get back on track running before my 4 mile race in a month. To everyone - I am just awed by your enthusiasm and dedication! Have a great week everyone! |

Veteran 113 Salt Lake City area | Subject: Winter sports Well, I have to admit that I took the day of training off on Saturday and went skiing. It was so much fun. I started some weight training, which I haven't done in many years, a week and a half ago, and I already was able to tell a difference out of the mountain. I only ski 2 or 3 times a year, but it was such a blast, and I didn't feel as tired or sore afterwards. To start my strength training, I sat down with a personal trainer and shared my goals, etc. Then he put together a series of exercises for me to do. I did that once, and now I just go do my workout - don't need him there (besides, $55 per hour is too much to pay for someone to cause you so much pain :-). I think it was money well spent for me. I would definitely recommend it if you can. Sunday is my off day...but...I sure did a lot of shoveling snow...that's got to count for something, right? We received about 12 inches yesterday and 3 or 4 more overnight. Sheesh! I told my wife to take down that "Let it Snow" flag that she's flying in front of the house. It must be her fault. I'm still working on the swimming technique. Seems slow going. I even had a personal swim lesson setup for Thursday but the instructor didn't show. That's ok, I've got my TI book and DVD, and at least I have that to show me what to work on. My biggest problem is that I'm too impatient - why should it be so hard to learn to swim efficiently? Anyway, I keep telling myself to not worry about it. Baby steps, right...? Keep up the good work everyone. Slow and steady wins. Edited by Leston12 2008-02-04 9:39 AM |

Extreme Veteran 1338 | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! OK...I am pressed for time tonight but will hit a couple of things... First, FBP, I checked out your blog and it is freakin' -8 at your place right now...it was 74 here today....unbelievable...this planet of ours....I am in shorts and a t-shirt....move to Texas man!!! Okay, personal exposure here...when I tell you not to raise your distance/duration by more than 10% a week I MEAN IT....I have an appointment with a sports medicine specialist at 8:30 in the morning to determine if the pain in my left foot is a stress fracture, bruise, or irritation from too tight shoes....dangit...my first half marathon is Feb 17...or at least I hope it is...so take care and build slowly...I have escalated my training in accordance with a training plan...in line with 10% a week and this still happens....I am frustrated and scared right now but will know everything 12 hours from now...hopefully it is minor and two weeks of rest will do it...I ran 14 miles on Saturday with only minor discomfort and went to spin class on Sunday but want to make sure I don't screw up my whole year for a 13 mile race....dangit....please send good karma my way in the morning...yes that is a very selfish request but I want to run.... OK> now back to you... Dan, take care of your wife...that way if you have a broken foot maybe she will take care of you...see above....boo! Rhoda, see message to Dan above...by the way, google "core workouts"...I am sure your husband would appreciate the entertainment of you creating 30 minutes abs while he recuperates....you can do that at home... Jean Claude Killey - aka Leston You downhill giant...OK...here's an embedded swim lesson/drill....amazing how I can weave this...smile...do you ever notice when you are going downhill if you crouch and get in a tuck you are very aerodynamic...presenting a small picture to the wind and therefore you reduce your drag? We that is exactly what you are trying to do in the pool...reduce your picture to the water you are trying to slice through...you attempt to propel your entire elongated vessel through the smallest hole in the water possible....if while crouched skiing you abruptly stand up, you slow down...immediately right? Well, same thing in the water....if your hips drop and your legs sink, you are pushing a less than hydrodynamic vessel through the water....so balance is king and then reducing drag...everything you do in the pool should focus on one of those two basics....balance and/or reducing drag....and I agree it takes forever....here's my thought...it takes about an hour to learn to swim....and the rest of your life to learn to do it well..... FBP, those pics are cool.... Flipper,,,, you are also our TECHNOLOGICAL EXPERT....you are amazing girl!!! We are such a talented group. Once again, for anyone who wants to check it out, my blog is at: www.petermcdrunning.blogspot.com Bryan - I promised in an earlier post not to whine about the weather I must endure to run outdoors from December to March so long as "y'all" don't whine about the heat and humidity in the summertime! Master 2042 Albany, NY | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! FBP - the temp was really -8?! I will never complain about about temps in the 20s and 30s again! My gym at work is open again so I got to run this afternoon on the treadmill. I'd really rather run outside or at the Y on the track but at least it was something. My husband is actually getting around pretty good in his boot cast now so a normal workout routine is getting a little easier to maintain. It's a good thing because I feel like such a blob after taking that time off. Here's a question for those of you that are good at getting strength training/core work into your workouts. How many days a week do you do core work? Do you do if on "off" days? Most days? Compared to a long ride, ab work doesn't take that long and I have no excuses for not fitting it in. I'm just trying to get an idea of how many days to fit it in... Bryan - good luck at the doc! I'm sending positive vibes... |

I will never complain about about temps in the 20s and 30s again!" Bear in mind that most of the temps I cite are in celcius so -8C is around 16F. That said, I have been known to run outside when temps are -20C (-5F). Biggest challenge is not the cold but rather the footing. Greatest invention ever for winter running - Yak Trax. Think of them as tire chains for your shoes. How many had pancakes yesterday for supper given that it was "Shrove Tuesday" ?? (or "Pancake Day" as we used to call it when I was a kid) |

Veteran 123 Mobile, Alabama | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Oh Bryan, no! You work SO hard... Man, I sure hope it's nothing serious. How disappointing for you if you have to slow down.. dang. So yeah ok, I'll be careful. I've been entirely too tired lately and have breathing problems (like a mild chest cold). I think I might be over training, just like you said I might be. *sigh* Hey Rhoda I'm not an expert, but I do core exercises twice a week, and a round of upperbody weights (machines) once a week - no more then that because I swim so much. Not sure if sharing that helps you much, *chuckle*, cuz you are way more experienced and in better shape then me. But I thought I'd mention what I do. Ok, 16 degrees is Ice Age to me. I live on the Gulf Coast (Gulf of Mexico). 50°F outside is cold to me! I'll be shivering all night after reading this. Pete, you are amazing! Hmm, pancakes sound really, really good. But no, don't know of that tradition here. We had "Fat Tuesday" yesterday so Mobile's Mardi Gras celebration is now over. Things can get back to normal here, whew. I'll check for the turtle swimming and running, Bryan. If I can't find him, maybe I can do something in Photoshop. That would be fun. sTRIve on, folks! Extreme Veteran 1338 | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! OK...some great news for me....I am so stoked!! Doc said it was irritation of the tendon running along the top of the first metatarsal (that's the bone that runs from your big toe to your ankle. By the way, it is a very unlikely place to have a stress fracture but doggone it hurt. I am on a steroid ladder to reduce the swelling and I have to relace my shoes in a different pattern. I really hope there is no drug testing or I may be disqualified for steroid use....hahaha...I crack me up! The message here is simple, you can do everything right and according to regularly adopted plans and still get hurt. I want you all to know how bummed I was thinking I wasn't going to get to have the party (run the 1/2 marathon) after all the work. I guess it would be like having your birthday party cancelled when you were 9 years old....the presents really don't matter that much, you want the party and to be the center of attention. I was so pumped all day yesterday and today about the news, you can't even imagine. So, here's your takeaway....easy growth...you all have a lot of time...build slowly and you will be successful. FBP - I appreciate you being iron about the weather...but I never agreed to any such thing. I will complain and moan about the heat...I guarantee it....smile....and you don't know humidity until you have seen (yes seen) Mobile Alabama humidity like Flipper (Juanita) experiences...the humidity there is palpable and the mosquitoes are the size of Volkswagen Bugs. Ro - Core 1 or 2 days a week about 30 minutes - they usually fit well with swims as most of your swim workouts will be shorter or work them in with the shorter runs of the week. FBP - pancake day??? Never heard of it...do you know the history of the celebration? It is on Feb 4? I will remember next year...what an excuse to eat pancakes....please give me advanced notice for cookie day, ice cream day and donut day!!!!!! Flipper - be sure you are drinking plenty of water....when I have a bit of a cold I try to drink more water...I don't know if it shortens the cold but it seems to at least decrease the thickness of the congestion and it makes me feel like I am doing something proactive. Thank you all for your kind thoughts and good vibes about my foot...I owe you. See you at the finish line sTRIve on B |

Extreme Veteran 553 New Brunswick, Canada | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Shrove Tuesday, aka "Pancake Day", is always the day before Ash Wednesday (the first day of Lent in the Christian calendar). Mostly an English thing - y'all probably tossed the tradition into Boston harbour when the Brits/Poms/Limeys pissed you off back in 1776(LOL). It would also be known as "Fat Tuesday" in places where Mardi Gras or Carneval are observed. The German/Austrian equivalent would be "Fasching" with the Tuesday culmination being "Fastnacht". Had week 4 of my swim class last night. We started with 200m to warm up (by which point I was more than warm!) then did "Fun Fifties" which consisted of 12 x various 50m drills. Next was 3 x 75m drills and we finished with 100m at an easy pace. I made it through everything but man was I tired and I feel like I'm getting worse not better! Plan is to get out for a 3-4k easy pace run at lunch today and swim tomorrow at lunch. |
